PSO Soccer Devotions SPRING 2019

Season Theme: RESPECTFUL KIDS

Strong leaders who are never too proud to honor others and do the right things

Dear Coaches and Devotions Leaders. One of the great privileges of participating in the PSO Soccer league is the opportunity we have to build the physical and spiritual lives of the boys and girls on our teams.

To help you intentionally speak truth into the lives of our kids and build their ideals and character, we put together this devotional packet. There are lessons for each week: 8 regular and two playoff games.

Each lesson has a picture for a visual aid and an outline for your devotion. Before each game, print out the two pages for that week and paste them together. The picture is for the teams to see and get their attention. The outline is there for you to use to organize your thoughts. Feel free to make any changes so that the words and message come from you and are tailored for the needs of your teams.

We recommend that the home team devotional leader call both teams to the center of the field to “take a knee” together as a sign of unity and sportsmanship. Home teams are responsible for bringing the devotion. Away team be prepared to do the devotions, just in case.

Please be intentional about doing these devotions. Each week’s lesson builds on the previous ones and are meant to inspire our KIDS to strive to live RESPECTFUL lives.

Thank you all for your commitment to our kids. May God Bless you and your words to our teams.

Week 1 – RESPECTFUL KIDS: Strong leaders who are never too proud to honor others and do the right things

Hello kids, this season we’re going to focus on becoming Respectful Kids by looking at one letter each week. Respect is when you don’t let your pride get the better of you so you can honor others and do the right things. Respectful means you’re Full of Respect. So full that it spills out in everything you do. A Respectful Kid is one of the best things a kid can be. This week we’re going to talk about R. Respectful Kids “ROCK” THE RULES. What is one common thing about most sports? They have RULES! Are rules good things or bad things? Rules are GREAT things! Without them we couldn’t have a fair game. The same thing is true in life. God has given us rules to help us have a fair and good life. He has put leaders in our cities and states and countries to make rules so everyone can live and work together fairly. A Respectful Kid always obeys and supports the rules. He does that so everyone has a fair chance to live well. Here’s what the Bible says. “For the Lord’s sake, obey every law of your government: those of the head of the state and those of his officers, for he has sent them to punish all who do wrong, and to honor those who do right . . . Show respect for everyone. Love Christians everywhere. Fear God and honor the government.” (1 Peter 2:13, 14, 17 NLT) The Bible calls us to show respect for laws and rules and to show respect for everyone we meet. Respectful KIDS ROCK THE RULES Let’s pray. Dear Lord, thank you for all our leaders. Help us to always respect them and the rules they make. Help us to show respect to everyone. Please bless us and our game today. AMEN.

Week 2 – RESPECTFUL KIDS: Strong leaders who are never too proud to honor others and do the right things

Hello KIDS, what are we focusing on this season? Becoming Respectful Kids. Respect is when you don’t let your pride get the better of you so you can honor others and do the right things. Respectful means you’re Full of Respect. So full that it spills out in everything you do. A Respectful Kid is one of the best things a Kid can be. Last week we looked at R. What did it stand for? “ROCK” THE RULES - Respectful KIDS obey the rules and support those who make them. This week we’re going to talk about E. Respectful KIDS EARN ESTEEM. Esteem is when you get or give respect. It means you raise up and praise and cheer on. Just like this player who just won his game. His teammates raise him up and give him cheers. He is getting esteem. The Bible says that people who give respect get respect. When you show respect you earn respect in return! A Respectful Kid Earns Esteem by showing respect. Here’s what the Bible says. “Whoever ignores instruction will pay for it, but whoever respects a command is rewarded.” (Proverbs 13:3) The Bible calls us to show respect, and when we do – we get respect in return. Respectful Kids EARN ESTEEM. Let’s pray. Dear Lord, thank you for your promise to bless those who show respect. Help us to always respect and care for everyone. Please bless us and our game today. AMEN.

Week 3 – RESPECTFUL KIDS: Strong leaders who are never too proud to honor others and do the right things

Last week we looked at E. What did it stand for? EARN ESTEEM - By being Respectful Kids and respecting others – we actually earn respect for ourselves. This week we’re going to talk about S. Respectful Kids SERVE WITH SINCERITY. Sincerity means with your whole heart. Not being fake. Not pretending to be good, just to get something good in return. Look at these two hearts. Which heart is the good one? Respectful Kids serve with their whole hearts. They do their best even if the work isn’t fun or if the work doesn’t benefit themselves. They work hard every time as if they were working for God himself. A Respectful Kid always serves with his whole heart and does his best. Respectful Kids SERVE WITH SINCERITY. Here’s what the Bible says: “. . . Obey your earthly leaders with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. . . Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.” (Ephesians 6:5 and Colossians 3:23 ) The Bible calls us to show respect for the things we do and to work with our whole hearts.. Respectful Kids SERVE WITH SINCERITY. Let’s pray. Dear Lord, thank you for giving us the opportunity to serve. Help us to serve with our whole hearts all the time. Help always to show respect to everyone. Please bless us and our game today. AMEN.

Week 4 – RESPECTFUL KIDS: Strong leaders who are never too proud to honor others and do the right things

Last week we looked at S. What did it stand for? SERVE WITH SINCERITY - Respectful Kids serve God and serve others with their whole hearts – and don’t pretend to serve just to get what they want. This week we’re going to talk about P. Respectful Kids PUT OTHERS FIRST. When you’re in the car and you see this sign. What does it mean? It means let others go first! It means that others are more important and can go before you. Yielding helps keep our roads safe. Yielding can also make our lives better. When we think of and serve others first (versus just trying to please ourselves) we honor others and we honor God. Here’s what the Bible says: “Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves . . . Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” (Romans 12:10 and Philippians 2:3-4) Respectful Kids don’t let their pride get the better of them so they can serve others and do the right things. Respectful Kids PUT OTHERS FIRST. Let’s pray. Dear Lord, thank you for thinking of us first by sending your Son . He yielded to you so we could all live and love better. Help us to yield for others and put them first. Please bless us and bless our game. AMEN.

Week 5 – RESPECTFUL KIDS: Strong leaders who are never too proud to honor others and do the right things

Last week we looked at P. What did it stand for? PUT OTHERS FIRST - Respectful Kids care about and take care of others before they care about themselves. This week we’re going to talk about E. Respectful Kids ELEVATE THEIR ELDERS. When you elevate something you put it above something else. When you help your parents or other leaders you elevate them above yourself. Respectful Kids are always looking for ways to help out their elders – those who are responsible for taking care of them. That means helping them in their work around the house, serving them when they need something, even telling them how much you appreciate all they do for you. Here’s what the Bible says: “You who are younger, respect your elders. Each one of you show humility toward one another, for ‘God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble’ . . . The elders who rule well -- give them double honor.” (1 Timothy 5:17 and 1 Peter 5:5 ESV) The Bible says Respectful Kids lift up their elders and look for ways to help them when they need it. Respectful kids Elevate Their Elders. Let’s Pray. Dear Lord. Thank you for giving us loved ones who take care of us and look out for us. Please help us to always look for ways to help them and serve them. Please bless us and our game today. AMEN.

Week 6 – RESPECTFUL KIDS: Strong leaders who are never too proud to honor others and do the right things

Last week we looked at E. What did it stand for? ELEVATE THEIR ELDERS - Respectful Kids give honor to older people like your parents, your friends parents, your coaches, your teachers and principals, your pastors. This week we’re going to talk about C. Respectful Kids CRUSH CONFLICT. Has anyone here ever gotten mad and lost their temper? Yes. We all have. But when we lose our temper and lash out at others we show disrespect to them. Keeping our tempers in check and not blowing up helps cool down the situation and helps us stop a disagreement from turning into a fight. Respectful Kids CRUSH CONFLICT by keeping their tempers under control. Here’s what the Bible says: “It is to one’s honor to avoid strife, but every fool is quick to quarrel . . . Let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger -- for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. (Proverbs 20:3 and James 1:19) The Bible says Respectful Kids listen first then take their time before they speak. They don’t lash out or lose their cool. By doing this Respectful Kids CRUSH CONFLICT by keeping their tempers in check. Let’s pray. Dear Lord God, thank you for giving us the ability to keep our tempers in control and CRUSH CONFLICT before it gets out of control. Please bless us and our game today. AMEN.

Last week we looked at C. What did it stand for? CRUSH CONFLICT - Respectful Kids control their anger and don’t rush into fights. This week we’re going to talk about T. Respectful Kids TREASURE THE TRUTH. What is a treasure? Something that is worth a whole lot. A treasure is something we hold on to and keep safe. Like gold and jewels. We can also treasure other things -- like our favorite baseball glove, or favorite people – like our parents or friends. Did you know we can even treasure words? When we choose to tell the truth -- even when it hurts -- we treasure those words. A Respectful Kid always says and supports the truth. Here’s what the Bible says. “Lord. . . Who may enter your presence . . .? Those who lead blameless lives and do what is right, speaking the truth from sincere hearts. Those who refuse to gossip . . . or speak evil of their friends. Those who . . . keep their promises even when it hurts . . . and who cannot be bribed to lie about the innocent. Such people will stand firm forever.” (Psalm 15 - NLT) The Bible says the Lord honors those who tell the truth and support it. They don’t lie or say bad things about others. They keep their promises even when it hurts. Respectful Kids TREASURE THE TRUTH. Let’s pray. Dear Lord, Help us to always honor the truth, to speak only good things and keep our promises. Rock the Rules 1 Peter 2:13-17 ESV Be subject for the Lord's sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, or to governors as sent by him to punish

those who do evil and to praise those who do good. For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. Live as

people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the

emperor

Earn Esteem Proverbs 13:3 Whoever scorns instruction will pay for it, but whoever respects a command is rewarded.

Serve with Sincerity Eph 6:5 Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ.

Col 3:23 Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are

serving the Lord Christ.

Put others first Rom 12:10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.

Philippians 2:3 Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves

Philippians 2:4 ESV Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

Galatians 5:13-14 ESV For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.

For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

Elevate Elders 1 Timothy 5:17 ESV Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching.

1 Peter 5:5 ESV Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud

but gives grace to the humble.”

Crush Conflict Pvb 20:3 It is to one’s honor to avoid strife, but every fool is quick to quarrel.

Jam 1:19 19 Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; 20 for the anger of man does not produce the

righteousness of God.

Treasure Truth Psalm 15 New Living Translation (NLT)

1 Who may worship in your sanctuary, Lord?

Who may enter your presence on your holy hill?

2 Those who lead blameless lives and do what is right,

speaking the truth from sincere hearts.

3 Those who refuse to gossip

or harm their neighbors

or speak evil of their friends.

4 Those who despise flagrant sinners,

and honor the faithful followers of the Lord,

and keep their promises even when it hurts.

5 Those who lend money without charging interest,

and who cannot be bribed to lie about the innocent.

Such people will stand firm forever.

Favor Family Ex 20:12 “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.

Uplift the Unloved Proverbs 19:17 ESV Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed.

Proverbs 22:9 ESV Whoever has a bountiful eye will be blessed, for he shares his bread with the poor.

Proverbs 14:31 ESV Whoever oppresses a poor Kid insults his Maker, but he who is generous to the needy honors him.

Proverbs 28:27 ESV Whoever gives to the poor will not want, but he who hides his eyes will get many a curse.

Love the Lord 1 Sam 2:3 Those who honor me I will honor, but those who despise me will be disdained.

Matthew 6:3 3 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
