4 MOPANI HERALD Friday February 14, 2014VALENTINE

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, South Africans are facing a stark reality, they are love-starved.

According to a just-released survey, more than 32% of single adults admit to feeling depressed and anxious about not fi nding love.

The national poll, which was conducted by a generic pharmaceutical specialising in medication for the treatment of depression and anxiety, Pharma Dynamics turned up some interesting results.

Three in ten of the 529 single adults polled nationally, said being single makes them feel lonely, while 12% said they felt less attractive and 36% blamed themselves for their loveless situation.

The majority however (89%) still fi rmly believes in true love and 76% said that fi nding that special someone would contribute greatly to their overall state of happiness.

Mariska van Aswegen, spokesperson for Pharma Dynamics says today’s generation of young people are fi nding it harder than ever to fi nd fulfi lling long-term relationships.

“There are a number of factors that contribute to making fi nding Mr or Mrs Right so much more diffi cult in the 21st century.

Globally, rates of loneliness are increasing as social structures disintegrate. Back in the 80s, the General Social Survey (GSS) collected

the fi rst nationally representative data on the number of confi dants (friends, family, soul-mates) that Americans had in their lives, and the most common response was three. In 2004, when the survey was done again, the most common response was zero. This marks an important change in our social structure and inevitably impacts on match-making,” she says.

According to Pharma Dynamics’ poll, the gym, book and/or dance club seemed to be the most popular hangouts for single South Africans to fi nd love, voted for by 56% of participants. More than 35% of respondents said they are confi dent about fi nding their match online, while 26% cited the workplace, 23% the supermarket, 22% the park and 16% still relied on the local pub to produce their perfect mate.

Van Aswegen notes there are many pros to online dating, but that one should be careful not to lean on the online dating crutch too much.

“Online dating may in the long-run discourage men from pursuing their partners more aggressively, leading to a more passive approach. Instead of walking up to a woman at a café or party after she’s made it clear that she’s interested, a man might not know how to respond and be more inclined to open his

laptop and send a message to several single women about how much he likes their profi le, while a genuine, real-life opportunity passes by.

“On the other hand, women who rely too heavily on cyber-dating too can become far less outgoing and less enthusiastic about starting conversations with men in public. Limiting the use of online dating sites might just force you to take more action in person. If you make yourself a little more available and assertive, and you don’t block out the world around you when you are out, you might just be surprised.”

More than 20% of the respondents have fi xed ideas about how quickly one should, ought to, have to and must fi nd love and 36% admitted to having long checklists about their potential partners. Fifty fi ve percent also said they fi nd themselves withdrawing from dating opportunities and pre-emptively rejecting suitors based on past experiences and preconceived ideas.

Van Aswegen says the trouble with checklists is that they are based on superfi cial attributes such as hobbies, interests and looks.

“In reality successful long-term relationships are rarely based on these. It is shared values and chemistry that are essential.

You can work through differences in hobbies and interests and even get past looks. Those who have rigid attitudes about romantic love are also the most likely to develop depression.

“It’s easy to get down about being single even when you have an otherwise good life, but it’s important not to dwell on the negative. Although negative thoughts alone are not enough to cause depression, but the combination of cognitive vulnerability and a mildly depressed mood can lead to a downward spiral that can eventually lead to major depression.

To beat the blues this Valentine’s Day, Van Aswegen suggests the following:

*Realise that being without a partner isn’t a character fl aw and that there is absolutely nothing wrong with being single.

*Get on with your life and the activities that you enjoy, and stay involved.

*Learn to be patient and relax a little. *Forget about love at fi rst sight and give

love at fi fth site a chance. *Take your time, stop worrying about

whether your current date is your best choice and just enjoy the process of getting to know somebody, even if they don’t tick all your boxes right away.

Traditional surgeons in the province have until month end to submit their applications to conduct initiation schools during school winter school holidays.

According to the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, initiation schools in the province will commence from June 20 to July 18.

The departmental spokesperson, Motupa Selomo said after the February 28 closing date, the House of Traditional Leaders will conduct a workshop on March 18, for all those who qualify for initiation school permits.

The purpose of the workshop is to brief and prepare the initiation schools stakeholders on precautionary measures to be followed in order to have a smooth process during the initiation period.

“We also call upon parents to verify the legitimacy of initiation schools they intend to send their children to with their respective traditional authorities. There will be zero tolerance for people who want to take chances by running initiation schools without permits,” said Selomo.

Required documents to accompany applications include: A letter from the traditional council of the area at which the

initiation schools will take place, supporting the application; A certifi cate of fi tness of the traditional surgeon issued by a medical doctor; An environmental report compiled by an environmental practitioner for the area at which the initiation school will take place; A copy of proclamation or title deed confi rming authority and or jurisdiction over the area at which the initiation school is to be conducted; and an undertaking signed by a senior traditional leader regarding acceptance of accountability for the initiation school.

Selomo further said that traditional nurse or any other person will be allowed to look after initiates in an initiation school without a certifi cate of attendance of training, initiates below the age of 12 cannot be admitted to an initiation school, no initiate shall be admitted to an initiation school more than fi ve days after the commencement of the school and no one will be allowed to abduct another for the purpose of taking the abducted person to an initiation school.

“In an effort to prevent the unnecessary loss of lives, we request parents to send their children to approved initiation schools,” Selomo added.

Aces, Classic through to the semi-finals

Two semi-fi nal spots of the annual KLG Top 8 Soccer Challenge were booked by Golden Aces and Leswika Classic after hotly-contested matches last weekend.

Defending champions, Golden Aces beat Mapantsula 4-3 after a gruelling penalty shoot-out on Saturday, while Leswika Classic disposed of Long Valley after a 4-1 scoreline was registered on Sunday.

The match between Leswika Classic and Long Valley at Mapantsula ground was highly technical ad entertaining. Just as spectators thought they would get to interval with a goalless scorecard, Louis Mngomezulu gave Leswika Classic a lead. The second stanza started with a blistering pace which gave the Long Valley side the opportunity to create chances. Trilly Mogoboya equalised for Long Valley in the 49th minute.

The systematic playing outfi t of Leswika Classic re-energised after the pep talk by their inspirational mentor, Junior Maake, to throw the game back to the opponents. In

what later seemed to be a rather one-sided affair, Terrence “Nyomber” Ralepelle, Aubrey “Charley” Letsoalo and Mogale “Fix” Maake scored a goal each to complete the demolition work and book Leswika Classic a place in the semi-fi nals.

The next competition matches will see Manamela Naughty Boys facing Mogoboya Junior Chiefs on Saturday while Real Madrid will entertain Lebaleng Shining Stars on Sunday.

Meanwhile, all the teams set to participate in the KLG Soccer League this season have until February 28 to affi liate for either the KLG Premier league or the KLG Super league. The two league divisions will kick off on 15 March 2014.
