Congratulations to the following Coaches for their hard work. Each Coach of the Week will receive a gift card from Press’d Sandwiches and Exist Cycle. Nominated By: Sunita Age Group of the Team: U4 - Team 19 (Marler) Please explain why you feel this Coach should be awarded the Coach of the Week: I would like to nominate Coach Craig and Ethan Marler. They have been a wonderful team for our little kickers group. They promote engagement of both parents and kids, they are always upbeat and strive for positives from all the kids even when the kids aren't super interested. I see how the years of playing soccer have molded Ethan into a great coach and his skill as a player to make it fun for the little ones. Craig is always upbeat and getting the kids involved, being a parent on the sideline as well I feel he sees how parent
involvement helps get the shy kids to join in. I feel very lucky that my son got these 2 as coaches as I see how much more excited he is to go to soccer and actually participate. Nominated By: Becky Galbraith Age Group of the Team: U10 Girls - Team 4 (Marshall) Please explain why you feel this Coach should be awarded the Coach of the Week: Coach Devon
Marshall and assistant coach Mark Eggli have an unbelievable dedication to this team. They come out with organized drills and an enthusiasm than never diminishes. They are so positive and encouraging, especially to our girls who have never played before and have set this tone for each and every game and practice. This positive attitude and approach to soccer has pulled our team together and made them try their hardest every time they go on the field. Our team has such a wide range of skill and experience levels, that getting these girls to be and play as a team couldn't have been easy. Coaches Marshall and
Eggli have brought out the maturity in my daughter and taught her not only how to be a better player, but also how to be a leader on and off the field. They have both gone above and beyond--in good weather and bad--and put an amazing effort into my daughter's team. They definitely deserve to be recognized.
Nominated By: Daniell Dentinger Age Group of the Team: U5 Boys - Team 07 (Matthews)
Please explain why you feel this Coach should be awarded the Coach of the Week: Coach Bill Matthews of the U5 Silver Surfers has been so amazing! He's so great with the kids but I really can't get over how amazing he's been with our son! Our little Lex doesn't speak a ton of english and he has a lot of anxiety so starting soccer for the first time was really overwhelming for him. From the very first day Coach Bill was so welcome and inclusive! He is so encouraging to all the kids and made Lex feel comfortable with him right away. He makes every kid feel special! Our son is so excited to go play soccer and whenever it seems like it's too much for him Coach Bill takes his hand and plays with him. Because of him our son is learning a love of the game and I couldn't be more grateful!
Nominated By: Eric Ritchie Age Group of the Team: U12 Boys - Team 06 (Swain)
Please explain why you feel this Coach should be awarded the Coach of the Week: I think my U12 community coach Jason Swain should be the coach of the week because he helped me out during a game last week. I am color blind and our team is a dark green jersey and I have trouble when we play against another dark jersey team because then all the jerseys look the same to me on the field. When I told my coach this he went and bought neon yellow tape and taped a yellow stripe around each player on my teams shin pad and sock so that I could tell who was on my team on the field. Thank you Coach Jason for helping me out and making soccer so much fun!
In recognition for the outstanding contributions of our Coaches

The SPDSA is proud to announce a partnership deal with “Wild Wing” in Sherwood Park.
If you are with the SPDSA and dining-in or taking-out, simply mention to your server that you are a member of
Sherwood Park Soccer.
Your bill will then be entered into a special “Members Section” and the total amount will be added to the SPDSA
Account.
Periodically this amount will be cleared by Wild Wing, with 10% of the total spend being donated to the SPDSA.
This funding will be used by the SPDSA across our programs in order to benefit our members.
So head down to Wild Wing, and you’ll not only be getting great food, but you’ll be helping out the SPDSA.
During the outdoor season the SPDSA, in conjunction with Alberta Soccer hosted
a Fundamentals soccer festival.
These festivals take place throughout the province and introduce our coaches
and players to new and different training techniques that align with Canada
Soccer and FIFA’s preferred training methods.
This year, the Canadian Women’s National team and All-State insurance
partnered up to bring something special to a team in each district that hosted a
Fundamentals Festival.
Ryley Speers was the lucky SPDSA coach who was selected at the festival to have
Canadian National player Rhian Wilkinson join and lead his team through a
session this outdoor season.
Wilkinson has made 177 appearances (147 starts) for the Canadian National
team, debuting on April 26, 2003 against the USA. Wilkinson has scored 7 goals
and contributed with 23 assists throughout her National career, generally playing
as a right fullback. During her time with the National program, Rhian has won a
bronze medal at the 2007 Pan American Games, a gold medal at the 2011 Pan
American Games and a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics. She will
once again be representing Canada at this years Rio Olympics.
Rhian Wilkinson joins SPDSA for a Day

The SPDSA hosted the 2nd annual K-Days
Kickoff Tournament July 15 - 17. The
tournament consisted of 60 teams from
U10-U16 in Tier I - III divisions.
Sherwood Park Phoenix entered a
tournament high 24 teams with 6 Clubs
entering 3 or more teams. In total 18 clubs
were represented at the tournament,
including teams from Coaldale, Calgary and
5 teams from Yellowknife, NWT.
A big thank you to our tournament sponsor
Above & Beyond, who supplied all
tournament medals.
A big thank you to the U14 Boys Phoenix
(Sandle) parents and players who worked
hard throughout the weekend to provide a
fantastic concession.
A last thank you to all the referees who took
on multiple games this weekend
U10 - U12 Divisions
Following the Long-Term Player
Development model set out by CSA, the K-
Days Kickoff did not keep stats or standings

development of the players, rather than the
end result. Teams followed this model well
throughout the tournament, showing great
sportsmanship and providing a great
weekend of learning for the players
involved.

TOSH FARRELL DISCUSSES DEVELOPING YOUTH PLAYERS
Tosh Farrell is a Coach that should be taken seriously
when in comes to developing youth players in the game
of soccer and has been praised by many people.
Credentials and Experience
His credentials and past experience are very impressive,
holding a UEFA ‘A’ License and the English FA Coach
Educator Level 1 license. He spent 14 seasons as
Technical Coordinator of Everton FC’s youth academy.
Tosh was instrumental in the development of numerous
players, including Wayne Rooney, who have represented
Everton, other English Clubs and National Sides.
In an interview with GoalNation, Farrell spoke about his
experiences and beliefs about training and his goals for
the future.
Praises and Referrals
Bill Beswick, former Manchester United sports
psychologist says Farrell’s focus “is exclusively on the
process of development - he knows if he gets this right
the score will take care of itself.” Simon Clifford, founder
of Brazilian Futebol de Salao schools in England has said
that Farrell is “light years ahead of anyone else” in terms
of developing youth players and former Irish FA Chief
Executive Howard Wells has called him “one of the most
inspirational coaches of young players [that he has ever
seen].”
Coaching Wayne Rooney and Everton Youth
When asked about what it was like developing Wayne
Rooney as a youth player, Tosh pointed out at the time
“you don’t know it is Wayne Rooney” and that as a youth
coach, you just know that you have a talented player in
front of you and treating them the same, you won’t have
any problems. But Rooney must have been special right
Tosh? “Wayne was a talented player...there was no
guarantee that he was going to achieve what he has,”
states Farrell on Wayne Rooney, “you have to be careful
not to throw your eggs in one basket. Some players are
late bloomers, so you have to be flexible.” Tosh goes on
to say that the difference between Wayne and others was
self-practice - and that Wayne would listen and apply
everything that he learned, and on a daily basis wanted to
better himself.
On Developing Youth in North America
“The game ratio in [North America] is out of balance. We
need to practice more and play less.” Farrell notes that
players want to play in the games, but practice is most
important because “during a soccer game, a player will
have the ball for two minutes max,” and he questions
how this is beneficial for development.
“...For Everton—you would look at a player and ask if
they had the potential to be in the program for a
sustained period of time and where they could go.” Tosh
goes on to comment about how the set-up is very
different in North America, “[here we recruit players] and
now you have ended up with eye catchers...why have a
development program at all if you are going to replace
your players every year with tryouts? There is a lack of
emphasis on investing in players—really developing
players, which takes time.”

Strive For Excellence Coach discusses his time coaching Wayne Rooney and how he sees development in N. America
Changes bring more technical guidance, especially at the “Golden Stage” of learning
The SPDSA Technical team has introduced new Technical Lead roles starting for the 2016-2017 Indoor Season that will be able to
bring more technical assistance in order to enhance the development of our Coaches and Players.
Active Start Technical Lead: The Active Start technical lead will be responsible, with the assistance of the Grassroots Coordinator
in leading the new U4-U6 program (see below for details).
FUNdamentals Technical Lead: The Fundamentals technical lead will be responsible for the U7-U8 program in the SPDSA and will
be out to various games and team training sessions throughout the season. They will also house Coach Development sessions
during the season.
Learn to Train Technical Lead: Our big change comes with the introduction of 4 separate Learn to Train Technical Leads to assist
players and coaches in the “Golden Age of Learning” stage for our SPDSA players. The 4 different categories split the boys and girls,
and U9/U10 and U11/U12. These Technical Leads will take a lead role with our Phoenix teams and also provide support to the
equivalent community program in the form of Coach Development, Game play analysis and team training.
Goalkeeping Technical Lead: The introduction of a specialized Goalkeeping lead will help in developing proper technical,
fundamental and physical techniques of our goalkeepers. The technical lead will be responsible for Phoenix and Community
programs through specialized programs.
SPDSA Introduces New Program for U4-U6 Players
New program aligns with Canada Soccer and FIFA preferred training methods
When you head to Millennium Place Saturday mornings this
Indoor season, you will be witnessing something very differ-
ent than in past seasons. Our U4 - U6 program has gone
through changes this season that may take time for parents
and players to get used to, but the SPDSA has changed the
program in order to follow CSA’s and FIFA’s preferred training
methods.
The program has shifted into a station based session that will
incorporate 4 activities that the players move around at regu-
lar intervals. The four stations focus on, Fundamental Move-
ment/Coordination, Soccer Technique, 1v1-2v2 games, and
Small Sided Games. Using these methods will help develop
well-rounded young players with a foundation in physical
literacy, solid soccer skills, and ideally, an enduring love for
the game.
Each week the sessions will be led by a Master Coach from
the SPDSA Technical Department, with the assistance of 2
Mentor coaches and volunteer coaches.
If you have any questions or are interested in being a volun-
teer coach please contact the office.
