Volcanoes and Earthquakes

- The Philippines is within what is called ³f ier y circle´ or seismic belt, that it is, it lies on the path of 

earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

- 50 Volcanoes, 10 are considered active.

- i.e. Mayon, Taal, Banahaw, Bulusan, etc. 

- Mt. Pinatubo eruption ± is now considered as the 

world¶s worst volcanic eruption in 20th centur y.

- There are over 100 seismic faults in the Philippines.

- The main Philippine faults runs northwest to

southeast f r om Lingayen Gulf acr oss north centr al 

Luzon.

-  A belt which par allels the main Philippine fault, is 

mar ked by mountains and active volcanoes.

Climate

-has a humid tr opical climate. There are two distinct

seasons: the dr y season and war m season.

Gener ally, typhoons become part of the Filipino way of lif e.

Dading (1964) , Meding(1980) Ruping (1990)

Natur al Resources

- The Philippines is endowed by nature with f ertile

soil and rich natur al resources.

- The main agricultur al cr ops are rice, coconuts, cor n,

abaca, sugar and tobacco.- Other  far m pr oducts: bananas, pineapples,

mangoes, beans and sweet potatoes.

- Mining pr oducts: gold, silver, zinc, nickel, chr omium,

manganese, and lead.

- Non metallic miner als: gr avel, salt, clay, coal,

sulphur, limestone and marble are found in the

Philippines.

- There are two species of f ish in the Philippines. The

50 f t. or  more whole shar k is found in the

Philippines.- So is the ³pandaka pygmea´ (9.66mm), the smallest

f ish in the world.

- There are 10,000 species of  shells in the

Philippines.

Natur al Wonders and Scenic Spots

- The If ugao Rice Terr aces in Banawe, Norther n

Luzon, i s considered as the ³eight wonder  of  the

world´. (built more than 2,000 yrs. ago)

- MayonV

olcano in Albay pr ovince is famous for itsalmost per f ect cone. Taal Volcano at the center  of 

Lake Taal is regar ded as the smallest volcano in the

world.

- i.e. Chocolate Hills, Hundred Islands, Mt. Banahaw,

etc.

- The peacef ul char acter  of  the Filipino could be

treaties of f riendship, the pledges of  cooper ationmade between Filipino and foreigners in our histor y

as a people.

Religiosity

- Filipinos are deeply spiritual and religiously

devoted.- One of  the best indicators of Filipinos deep-seated

religiosity can now be seen thr ough the regular 

attendance of  the multitude of devotees in El

Shaddai, (a Catholic charismatic gr oup).

- Religious Pr actices (Quiapo Devotion, Pasyon,)

-Filipinos are loyal and gr atef ul to f riends who are

good and ever reliable in both good times and inadversity.

-The phr ase ³mabuting kaibigan, masamang kaaway´

seems to be typical Filipino in ter ms with their 

relationship with others.

- Filipinos can integr ate in any culture and can cope in

any climate

Close Family Ties

- The Filipino gener ally has an extended family

structure; it consists of gr andparents, parents,children, and children¶s children.

Regionalistic

-  As an extension of  clannishness, the Filipinos tend

to be regionalistic.

- This regionalistic f eeling is clearly manif ested in thevarsitarian gr oups (Samahang Ilocano, Mekeni,

Bicol, etc.in colleges and universities.

- This str ong regionalistic sentiment among Filipinos

more of ten resulted to one regional gr oup pitting

itself against each other.

-  An ethnic gr oup, which is perceived as inf erior is

usually the object of laughter in barbershop jokes.

Respect for Elders

-  A char acter tr ait has remained a customar y law

among Filipinos is respect for elders.

- The wor ds po, ho, opo, oho in our languagedef initely show respect for elders. (i.e. Kissing the

hands of elders, pagmamano)

- ³Papunta ka palang, pauwi na ako´ ; Mar ami ka

pang kakaining bigas´ ; ³may gatas ka pa sa labi´.
