Bear are mammals of the family Rushdie. Bears are classified as conforms, or dog like carnivores, with the panpipes being their closest living relatives. Although there are only eight living species of bear, they are widespread, appearing in a wide varietyof habitats throughout the Northern hemisphere and partially in the Southern Hemisphere. That which pertains to bears is called ursine. Bears are found in the continents of North America, SouthAmerica, Europe, and Asia.

Common characteristics of modern bears include a large body with stocky legs, a snout, shaggy hair, plant grade paws with five nonrestrictive claws, and a short tail. While the polar bear is mostly carnivorous and the giant panda feeds almost entirely on bamboo, the remaining six species are omnivorous, with largely varied diets including both plants and animals.

With the exceptions of courting individuals and mothers with their young, bears are typically solitary animals. They are sometimes diurnal, but are usually active during the night (nocturnal) or twilight (crepuscular). Bears are aided by an excellent sense of smell, and despite their heavy build and awkward gait, they can run quickly and are adept climbers and swimmers. In autumn, some bear species forage large amounts of fermented fruits, which affects their behavior. Bears use shelters such as caves and burrows as their dens, which are occupied by most species during the winter for a long period of sleep similar to hibernations.

Prambanan is the largest Hindu temple compound in Central Java inIndonesia, located approximately 18 km east of Yogyakarta.

The temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the largest Hindu temples in south-east Asia. It is characterised by its tall and pointed architecture, typical of Hindu temple architecture, and by the 47m high central building inside a largecomplex of individual temples.

It was built around 850 CE by either Rakai Pikatan, king of the second Mataram dynasty, or Balitung Maha Sambu, during the Sanjaya Dynasty. Not long after its construction, the temple was abandoned and began to deteriorate. Reconstruction of the compound began in 1918. The main building was completed in around1953. Much of the original stonework has been stolen and reused at remote construction sites. A temple will only be rebuilt if atleast 75% of the original stones are available, and therefore only the foundation walls of most of the smaller shrines are now visible and with no plans for their reconstruction.

The temple was damaged during the earthquake in Java in 2006. Early photos suggest that although the complex appears to be structurally intact, damage is significant. Large pieces of debris, including carvings, were scattered over the ground. The temple has been closed to the public until damage can be fully assessed. The head of Yogyakarta Archaeological Conservation Agency stated that: “it will take months to identify the precise damage”. However, some weeks later in 2006 the site re-opened forvisitors. The immediate surroundings of the Hindu temples remain off-limits for safety reasons.

THE LEGEND OF BATURADEN

One evening, Suta  walked  around or bathing place called Taman Sari. Suddenly he surprised by the sound of women screaming. Sutaseek the voice.Finally, he arrived near a large tree. He see dukegirls and a very large snake .

Suta  itself actually very afraid to see these snakes. But to seethe princess pale fear that, arising his brave to kill the snake.He hit serpent’s head many times and  snakes are  not moving. Since that event, the Prince close to Suta. Both the human relationship of love that, eventually known to the duke, the dukebecame angry. “He was just a servant!  You should not marry him!”said the duke. Hear the words of his father, the daughter is verysad heart. Especially when hearing news that Suta entered prison under the ground.

In prison, Suta is not eating and drinking, and even space his jail waist-deep water be drowned. As a result Suta fever disease.Suta hear news circumstances, the girls determined to liberate the dear. “Bellyband, I should be able to free kang Suta. Poor him, before he helped me. I have been indebted to him for mercy. Help me, bellyband.” said the daughter to servant.

Finally, he succeeded to free the hapless young man and brought to a place. There, the girls have been waiting with a horse. Thenthey  rode with a horse, leave Kadipaten. They rested for a moment to remove the tired. The princess looked after Suta . Thanks to the patience ,a few days later the young man eventuallyrecovered. They decided to settle there. The place became known by the name Baturaden, which means Batur and Raden.

ANDY ON GUARD

Andy had just decided to go back into the pantry, when a whisper of cold air brushed his face and the scent of – of the sea? – seemed to waft into the room. Was there an outside door open? Would grandpa be right outside watching? He was pretty brave.

He crawled cautiously from the kitchen and peered round the end of the hall.

Lights! Through the open doorway at the end of the side hallway, he could see the long reaching beams of the searchlights, with the roundish figure of his grandfather silhouetted against them.

He glanced behind. His mother would be terribly angry if she found out. But what if this was the only good air-raid of the whole war and he missed it?

He licked his lips. It probably would not be too dangerous now. The bomber had gone past and was still moving away ; and he couldnot hear any more coming, even though the siren was still sounding.

He looked back towards the pantry once more, then crawled quicklydown the short hallway and squatted just behind his grandfather’slegs. Leaning to the side, he could see the great beams from the searchlights probing the dark night sky, beams even stronger thanthose from a lighthouse. They swept back and forth like swords oflight; swords slashing the night in search of enemy aircraft for the gunners on the ground.

I hope they find one, thought Andy. He had seen the small round puffs of shell-bursts from the guns during the day. They popped from the sky around Port Phillip Bay when the gunners at Albert Park and Williamstown practiced firing.

Now he wanted to see one burst in the night sky, or even better, see it burst and explode an aircraft ; but there were no new sounds of engines, and the one that had gone over the house sounded too far away now.

“Do you reckon they’ll get one, Grandpa?” he asked, forgetting hewas not supposed to be there.

“What th’ devil-“ Grandpa began angrily, then chuckled and felt with a hand till it rested on Andy’s head. “A man can’t hide himself away when there’s some action, can he?”

Teachers of English generally make three basic level distinction : beginners, intermediate and advanced (though exactly what these terms mean often depends where you work and

what the textbook (if any) you are using). Broadly, however, beginners are those who don’t know any English and advanced students are those whose level of English is competent, allowing them to read unsimplified fact and fiction and communicate fluently with native speakers. Between these two extremes, intermediate suggests a basic competence in speaking and writing and an ability to comprehend fairly straightforward listening andreading.

Between these levels, other descriptive terms are used too. A distinction is made between beginners and false beginners to reflect the fact that some adults start a beginners’ course having heard virtually no English, whereas many others can’t really use any English but actually know quite a lot which can bequickly activated; they’re not real beginners. Elementary students are no longer beginners and are able to communicate in abasic way. They can string some sentences together, construct a simple story or take part in predictable spoken interactions. However, they have not yet achieved intermediate competence whichinvolves greater fluency and general comprehension of some general authentic  : there are still areas of knowledge –tense structure, noun phrase construction, vocabulary use etc. –which elementary students have not come across. Upper intermediate students, on the other hand, have the competence of intermediate students, on the other hand, have the competence of intermediate students plus an extended knowledge of grammatical construction and skill use. However, they may not have achieved the accuracy or depth of knowledge which their advanced colleagues have acquired.

EUGENE O’NEILL

Universally acclaimed as America’s greatest playwright, Eugene O’Neill was born in 1888 in the heart of the theater district in New York City. As the son of an actor he had early exposure to the world of the theater. He attended Princeton University briefly  in 1906, but returned to New York to work in a variety of jobs before joining the crew of a freighter as a seaman. Upon returning from voyages to South Africa and South America, he was hospitalized for six months to recuperate from tuberculosis. While  he was recovering, he determined to write a play about hisadventures on the sea.

He went to Harvard, where he wrote the one-act Bound east for Cardiff. It was produced in 1916 on Cape Cod by the Provincetown Players, an experimental theater group that was later to settle in the famous Greenwich Village theater district in New York City. The Players produced several more of his one-acts in the years between 1916-1920. With the full-length play Beyond the Horizon, produced on Broadway in 1920, O’Neill success was assured. The play won the Pulitzer Prize for the best play for the year. O’Neill was to be awarded the prize again in 1922,1928,and 1957 for Anna Christie, Strange Interlude, and LongDay’s Journey into Night. Although he did not receive the Pulitzer Prize for it, Mourning Becomes Electra, produced in 1931, is arguably his most lasting contribution to the American theater. In 1936, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature.

O’Neill plays, forty-five in all, cover a wide range of dramatic subjects, but several themes emerge, including the ambivalence of

family relationship, the struggle between the sexes, the conflictbetween spiritual and material desires , and the vision of modernman as a victim of uncontrollable circumstances. Most of O’Neill ‘s character are seeking meaning in their lives. According to hisbiographers , most of the characters were portraits of himself and his family. In a sense, his work chronicled his life.

Awamrigurr – The strangers

For many years there were only Aboriginal people living here. They hunted for food and meat for their families. Sometimes they went to the river to spear fish or other creatures.

One day, the men went down to the river to spear the fish. As they came to the river, they saw a boat with some strange men in it. The Aboriginal men were frightened so they hid themselves in the bush, waiting for the boat to come. They were standing on thesand and talking and they went into the bush.

One of the Aboriginal men went to the top of a hill and stayed there watching the white men come closer and closer. He told his men that the strange men were coming, and one by one they took their spears to the very top of the hill. Then two of the Aboriginals rolled some big rocks down the hill towards the whitemen. But they saw the rocks coming and hid themselves in a corner. The rocks rolled past them. The Aboriginal men thought

that the strange men were killed, but they were hiding behind a big rock. Then the white men saw a black man and fired a gun. TheAboriginals ran away and hid themselves again.

When the white men were finished exploring, they started back fortheir ship but as they went past, the Aboriginal men began  to throw their spears. The strange men ran and dodged so that the spears would not hit them. They jumped on board and sailed away from the land, and they never came back again.

When they were sailing away, the Aboriginal men were standing on the sand watching them. After they disappeared, the men did a wild dance until it was dark.

A Visit to Dracula’s Castle

I heard a heavy step approaching behind the great door, and saw through the chinks the gleam of a coming light. Then there was the sound of rattling chains and the clanking of massive bolts drawn back. A key was turned with a loud grating noise, and the great door swung back.

Within stood a tall old man, clean-shaven but for a long, white moustache, and dressed in black from head to foot, without a single speck of colour about him anywhere. He held in his hand anold, silver lamp in which the flame burned without a chimney or glass of any kind, throwing long quivering shadows as it flickered in the draught of the open door. The old man motioned me in with his right hand with a courtly gesture, saying in excellent English but with a strange accent ,’Welcome to my house! Enter freely and of your own will!’

He did not step forward to meet me, but stood like a statue, as though he were turned into stone. The instant however that I stepped forward and, holding out his hand, grasped mine with a strength which made me wince. His hand felt as cold as ice – morelike the hand of a dead man than a living one.

Again he said,’ Welcome to my house. I am Dracula and I bid you enter. Come in, Mr. Harker, the night air is chill and you must eat and rest.’

Deinonychus

The model of Deinonychus, a dinosaur from the Cretaceous period can be found in the Museum of  Natural Science.

Deinonychus is small by dinosaur standards. It is about 2.5 metres in length and stands about one metre high at the shoulder.

This reptile has a long tail, spindly legs and slender neck. The head is large and the jaws are lined with sharp teeth.

The tail, approximately 3 metres in length, has vertebrae surrounded by bundles of boy rods so the whole tail can be held stiff.

The toes of  Deinonychus are unusual. The first toe is small and point backwards. The second toe has a huge sickle-shaped claw andis raised. The third and fourth toes are in the normal position.

Beautiful Vistas Aplenty

Buleleng regency has unique social and cultural characteristics that set it apart from the rest of Bali. Stretching across almostthe whole of northern Bali, its 144-kilometer coastline beckoned many foreign ships to drop anchor in bygone days.

Old Buddhist temples, such as Kalibukbuk Buddhist temple, and Mongolian relics can be found in Buleleng.

On the way to Lovina for a dolphin viewing tour, domestic tourists often stop in Singaraja to savor the local fare. Lovina,located nine kilometers from Singaraja, the capital of Buleleng regency, is a long stretch of beach ideal for swimming, snorkeling and watching beautiful sunrises. And, of course, for dolphin viewing tours. Tours costs Rp 60,000 per person, start at6 a.m. and last for three hours.

Buleleng also has an ecotourism village, Desa Wisata Pemuteran, located in Gerokgak district. Here the community manages the environment at Pemuteran Bay. The bay was once severely damaged by local fishermen using explosive materials, such as potassium cyanide, to catch fish.

Today, the bay is environmentally friendly as water guards monitor the area and the fishermen. Bio rock technology is being developed to allow the coral reefs to grow.

Canada, like Australia is a very big country. Part of the continent of North America, it stretches from the Pacific Ocean on the west to the Atlantic on the east.

It is possible to travel across Canada by train, experiencing almost every type of scenery you can imagine. In the western provinces are majestic mountains, in the central provinces, the plain lands of the prairies and in the east, the rugged coastlineof the maritime provinces.

Vancouver Island is a beautiful spot about an hour’s ferry ride west of Vancouver. Huge, vehicular ferries offer luxury travel.

Victoria, the capital of Vancouver Island, has many elegant old buildings dating from colonial time. Fringing the beautiful harbor are Parliament House, the Museum and the Empress Hotel.

The Butchart Gardens are a popular tourist attraction in Victoria. Converted from a quarry, they are beautiful in any season. At their best in summer, they are a blaze of colour, but in spring when the leaves are bursting out on the bare trees and the bulbs are coming into bloom, they are also a delight.

Travelling from west to east, you cross three mountain ranges before reaching the Rockies. These are indeed mighty mountains. Towering into the sky and covered in snow, they are truly awesome.

Banff and Lake Louise are popular ski resorts in the Rockies. In winter, surrounded by rugged, snow-covered mountains, frozen lakes and pine forests dripping with snow, they are picture-perfect. The historic Banff Springs Hotel and Chateau Lake Louise, built by Canadian Pacific Railways in the 1800s, are likefairy-tale castles.

In the eastern provinces of Ontario and Quebec are the Great Lakes and the mighty Lawrence River. The fascinating cities of Toronto, Montreal and Quebec, rich in the history of British and French settlement, are also found in the east. The maritime provinces of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia have a special beauty,

with kilometers of scenic coastline and a rich history connected with the sea.

Like Australia, Canada has much to offer tourists and residents. French, as well as English, is an official language, as many of its original settlers were French. Thus many English and French-speaking tourists visit this country of stunning beauty and friendly people every year.

ANDY ON GUARD

Andy had just decided to go back into the pantry, when a whisper of cold air brushed his face and the scent of – of the sea? – seemed to waft into the room. Was there an outside door open? Would grandpa be right outside watching? He was pretty brave.

He crawled cautiously from the kitchen and peered round the end of the hall.

Lights! Through the open doorway at the end of the side hallway, he could see the long reaching beams of the searchlights, with the roundish figure of his grandfather silhouetted against them.

He glanced behind. His mother would be terribly angry if she found out. But what if this was the only good air-raid of the whole war and he missed it?

He licked his lips. It probably would not be too dangerous now. The bomber had gone past and was still moving away ; and he couldnot hear any more coming, even though the siren was still sounding.

He looked back towards the pantry once more, then crawled quicklydown the short hallway and squatted just behind his grandfather’slegs. Leaning to the side, he could see the great beams from the searchlights probing the dark night sky, beams even stronger thanthose from a lighthouse. They swept back and forth like swords oflight; swords slashing the night in search of enemy aircraft for the gunners on the ground.

I hope they find one, thought Andy. He had seen the small round puffs of shell-bursts from the guns during the day. They popped from the sky around Port Phillip Bay when the gunners at Albert Park and Williamstown practiced firing.

Now he wanted to see one burst in the night sky, or even better, see it burst and explode an aircraft ; but there were no new sounds of engines, and the one that had gone over the house sounded too far away now.

“Do you reckon they’ll get one, Grandpa?” he asked, forgetting hewas not supposed to be there.

“What th’ devil-“ Grandpa began angrily, then chuckled and felt with a hand till it rested on Andy’s head. “A man can’t hide himself away when there’s some action, can he?”

“I thought I should come and see if you needed any help,” Andy said.

NARRATIVE :

What is a narrative?

–          A narrative constructs a pattern of events

–          It contains a problematic or unexpected outcome

–          It is designed to entertain and instruct the listener

–          A narrative models desirable patterns of behaviours

How is narrative written?

–          A narrative begins with the introduction or orientation which identifies the ’who’ , ‘what’ , ‘when’ and ‘where’

–          Following this is the complication where the normal pattern of events is altered to create a crisis

–          In the resolution, an attempt is made to resolve the complication

–          The experience of the complication changes the main character in some way

–          The coda, which rounds off the story, is optional

Which features of grammar are often found in a narrative?

Past tense : A verb is written in the past tense to show an action happened in the past

Example :        Emily cooked the meal.

Proper noun : names a particular person, place, events or thing. Days of the week and months of the year are also proper nouns. A proper noun begins with capital letter.

Example          : Hoi-yee and Madeleine visited the gallery.

Time connective or conjunction : A word that joins words, phrasesor clauses together . The most common conjunctions are ‘and’ , ‘but’ , and ‘or’.

Example          : Lisa and Gino went to Sydney.
