L E T T E R F R O M T H E S T A F F
Spring is now officially upon us.
working on this issue, I had no idea that our city has so many
international cuisines. And I don’t want to spoil anything for
you, but they are all DELICIOUS! Yep, we got to eat at all of
these places this month and I must say that my palate has
never before tasted such a wide range of amazing flavors.
Please try each one of the restaurants we featured in this issue
and we guarantee you will have fun!
The last thing I would like to say
is thank you. Thank you, OKC, for
so devoutly picking up So6ix each
month and letting us entertain you
with our hard work. We have been
very happy and very humbled
by all the support and love that
we are flooded with each day at
So6ix. We will continue to do our
best each month to share with
you all the great things we find in
Oklahoma City!
Not only do April showers bring May flowers, but spring also
opens up so many things to do in our great state. We can
finally say goodbye to white grass and naked trees and watch
as our whole state blooms with color and life again for the new
season. I’ve already snuck in a few rounds of golf in 2016, but
I can’t wait to finally step out on green grass and get some sun
for the first time this year.
I’m also looking forward to several more things this month. If
you have never participated in Redbud, you’re really missing
out on a fantastic annual event. Redbud is now in its 34th
year and it seems to get better every year. Well over 5,000
participants walk, run or bike through Nichols Hills all in the
name of raising money for local nonprofits. This year the
beneficiary will be Peppers Ranch, an incredible organization
focused on foster care. Redbud is a two-day event that takes
place this year on April 9th and 10th.
If you love to run, you also don’t want to miss this year’s OKC
Memorial Marathon, which will take place on April 24th. This
huge event remembers the victims and families of the April
19th, 1995 bombing, while also raising money to support the
memorial for the future generations.
In our April issue, we are particularly excited to showcase a
world tour of cuisine all right here in OKC! Until we started
Vertical VegetablesWHAT YOU NEED:• Hanging pocket shoe organizer
• Hooks
• Good quality/moisture-holding compost
• Plants & seeds: mixed-leaf salad, herbs, peas, mini tomatoes
• Trough planter to catch drips
• 2” x 2” piece of wood
HOW TO:1. Find a spot to hang your shoe organizer where
the plants will get the right amount of sunlight.
Drill or seal the hooks appropriately. This works
best on the back of a swinging door or a fence.
2. Drill the 2x2 into the middle area of where the
shoe organizer will hang. This will keep the shoe
organizer from laying flush against the wall and
ruining moisture or temperature.
3. Fill each pocket with compost, approximately 1”
below the rim.
4. Place the trough planter at the base to catch
excess dirt and water runoff if you are worried
about getting the area messy.
5. Add seeds, plants and water according to pack-
age instructions. Watch your garden grow!
GARDENING TIME IS ALREADY UPON US, YAY!
We have found some really innovational ways to create a garden. Not that any-thing is wrong with conventional gardening, but sometimes it’s fun to think outside the box. Whether you’re a longtime gardener and want to try something new, you’ve never gardened and want to give it a go, or you’re looking for a new way to make veggies and flowers fit into the space you’re given, unconventional gar-dening can be exciting! Try something new – you never know how it’s going to turn out until you try.

Succulent Clay Pot SphereWHAT YOU NEED:• Small clay pots
• Artificial moss
• Hot glue
• Soil
• Succulents
HOW TO:1. Using hot glue or strong craft glue, start gluing the
sides of the pots to one another in a sphere pat-
tern. Don’t worry too much about the look of the
hot glue, but try to be as tidy as possible.
2. Once dry, fill the empty cracks and spaces with ar-
tificial moss. You can find this at local craft stores.
3. Fill select pots with dirt and plant succulents.

Eggshell StartersWHAT YOU NEED:• Empty eggshells
• Starter moisture-holding soil
• Seeds
HOW TO:1. Be sure to save up eggshells after making breakfast.
Simply rinse them out well and let dry completely.
2. Use a needle to poke a small hole in the bottom
of the eggshell, and peel off the top of the egg to
leave a space for the soil and seed.
3. Fill the shells almost to the top with soil, placing the
seed 3/4 of the way up.
4. Using a marker, label the shells accordingly. Water
and allow to get adequate sunlight. Once sprout-
ed, you can plant in the ground, eggshell and all!
The eggshell is a great way to give your seedlings
an extra boost of calcium.
Hanging Colander PlanterWHAT YOU NEED:1. Colander (an old one works fine)
2. Flowers
3. Potting soil
4. Landscape fabric
5. Jute string
6. Hooks with drywall hangers
HOW TO: 1. Cut a circle of landscape fabric to put in the colander
(filling the entire colander) so dirt won’t pop out the
bottom or the sides. Trim as needed.
2. Fill the colander with flowers and dirt, filling it up to
about an inch from the top.
3. Cut a piece of jute string to tie on a corner of the han-
dle and wrap around the handle to completely cover it.
Knot again. Repeat on the other colander handle. Cut a
long piece (as long as you want your plant to hang) and
knot on each handle of the colander, creating two rope
handles to hang from. (Did we lose you?)
4. Put hooks into the ceiling and hang your new planter!

Hanging Mason JarsWHAT YOU NEED:• Wood squares
• Drill
• Metal rod
• Washers & bolts
• Plants
• Rocks
• Mason jars
HOW TO:1. Cut six equal-sized squares of wood. Jig or punch out large
holes in the center for the mason jars to fit in. (You’ll need to
find jars that are wider at the top than in the middle.)
2. Drill two holes on either side of where the mason jar sits.
This is for your rod.
3. Feed the rods (with washer and bolts) through each of the wood
pieces, making sure to twist the bolts to the desired locations.
4. Line each jar 1/4 of the way up with small rocks, to give the
roots enough space to breathe in lieu of drainage holes.
5. Position the plants inside the jars with the metal lid rim fas-
tened on top and rest them into place on each wood panel.
6. Find a spot to hang and enjoy!
Buried Pot Garden
WHAT YOU NEED:• Various sizes of planting pots
• Soil
• Flowers or vegetables
• Shovel
• Mulch
HOW TO:1. Using the shovel, dig holes in various sizes and various spots
around the garden bed area. You can haul off the dirt you dug
up or place it evenly around the rest of the garden area.
2. Place the pots all the way inside the holes you dug until only
the lip sits on top of the ground.
3. Fill the pots up with dirt, planting your veggies or plants in
each individual pot.
4. Mulch in the flower bed around it. Water adequately.

You might be surprised to learn there is more to Oklahoma cuisine than burgers and French
fries or chicken fingers (not hating, just saying). We set out to show you just how big of a melt-
ing pot our great state is. We have dozens of wonderful cultural cuisines that we can dig into
without having to travel thousands of miles. Stepping out of your comfort zone and being ad-
venturous can be extremely beneficial and in this case, extremely delicious. We challenge you
to broaden your horizons and try something new! All of these spots are one of a kind.

We are so proud to welcome this rocking spot into our ever-growing food scene and into our bellies! (Sorry for the pun,
I’ll probably use it at least 32 times.) Five best friends bound together by their love of food and concert rock brought
Rock & Brews to life. Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley from the infamous band KISS are two of the partners in on this
joint. If you haven’t been to check it out yet, don’t make assumptions: this place is much, much, MUCH more than just
a bar. This cool eatery is whipping up delicious handcrafted food like artisan pizza, authentic giant Bavarian pretzels
and more. Their fare is extremely fresh and flavorful and couldn’t be any further from typical “bar food.” They have a
beautiful patio with giant doors opening to the inside on nice Oklahoma days as well as a kid play area. Oh yeah, this
place is kid-friendly, and pet-friendly too! You read that right – they treat pets as part of the family, offering a creative
doggie menu with things like an unseasoned Bow-Wow Burger or Barkin’ Bacon: four strips of crispy delicious bacon.
Have a food allergy? Rock & Brews has many gluten-free options, even pizza! Rejoice! With a plethora of TV screens,
it’s a great spot to watch an old music video from back in the day or the current sports game. Consider yourself a beer
connoisseur? They have over 60 beers on tap, including many local brews, which we love. As you can see, this is a spot
for literally EVERYONE, from kiddos to pets, from a date night to watching the game with friends. Come try this rocking
eatery soon, and you’ll find you can’t get enough of Rock & Brews either.

beers, wines and spirits. The Barrel’s warm and inviting
atmosphere makes it great for any occasion. Stop by after a

on the weekend, bring your loved one by for a date night or
plan a special event. Now that the weather is turning warmer,
you’ll want to take advantage of their great covered patio.

BLU MEDITERRANEAN GRILL 2142 W. Interstate 240 Service Rd.,

Blu is a great spot just south of downtown that’s serving up
a wide range of homemade Mediterranean favorites and
specialties. They’re using only the freshest ingredients and
incorporating signature spices that will captivate your taste
buds. You’ll find the traditional Mediterranean menu items
like hummus and kabobs as well as weekly and daily chef
specialties that will have you planning your week around
them. If you’re into falafel (the good kind), we recommend
their Falafel Sandwich: delicious homemade patties tucked
into warm pita and topped with veggies and homemade
sauces. We highly recommend their Zaatar and Cheese
Pies. No, it’s not pie as we usually think of it, but these
delicious bread-like treats are of the highest quality and are
great as a snack or even as a meal.
We could talk about pizza all day, and Empire Slice would
certainly come up in the conversation. Empire Slice House sits
in the trendy and popular Plaza District. They’re whipping up
creative homemade pizzas in all kinds of variations. Sure, you
can still get your typical pepperoni or cheese, but the glory
in Empire Slice is that they’ve come up with some wacky
creations that’ll make you think, “Where has this been my
whole life?” This is a New York-style pie, so expect thin crust
and massive slices. You can buy by the slice or get an entire
pizza, depending on how hungry you are. We recommend the
Foghorn Leghorn if you’re into spicy: Asiago, chicken, bacon,
jalapeño, sweet marinara and Sriracha drizzle. You really can’t
go wrong with any of the choices; you can never have too
much pizza, right?
POWER HOUSE1228 S.W. 2nd St.,
OKC, OK 73108405.702.0699 • powerhouseokc.com
Tucked away in the historic downtown Farmers Public Market,
Power House is a great spot for drinks and eats. It was
remodeled from a very weathered building and turned into
a great place for people to gather and enjoy specialty menu
items and handcrafted cocktails as well as coffees. Their
ever-growing menu features delicious homemade creations
like Hawaiian Pig Biscuits with house-made habanero jam or
the Roasted Hatch Chile Especial, stuffed with jack cheese
and Lovera’s smoked sausage and topped with verde sauce.
Join them for brunch on Saturdays from noon to three, when
they offer from-scratch items and drink specials. This quaint,
locally owned spot is great for private events, parties or just
getting together to enjoy a drink with friends.

SHABU SHABUCOOKING WITH CHEF MINH NGUYEN
PREPARATION
1. Slice the ribeye very thin. This step is sometimes easier if the ribeye is slightly frozen
(but not completely frozen, or you won’t be able to slice it). Slice veggies as well – the
thinner the better for tougher vegetables like carrots.
2. Mix broth and water together. Pour into Japanese lined paper and heat until boiling. If you don’t
have an open flame and Japanese paper, you can just do this in a regular pot on the stove.
3. Dip veggies into broth and gently move around for 4-5 minutes or until done.
4. Bring broth back to a second boil and dip ribeye in. The cooking time for the ribeye
varies depending on the thickness of the meat and how done you want it. Generally
it is about 8-10 seconds for rare.
5. Dip into sesame or ponzu sauce and enjoy.
• 4 oz ribeye
• Assorted vegetables (mushrooms,
carrots, block of tofu, etc.)
• 1 cup chicken or beef broth
• 1 cup water
• Sesame sauce
• Ponzu sauce
• Lined Japanese paper
INGREDIENTS CHEF MINH NGUYEN
Chef Minh, born in Vietnam, has been a
chef for the last 23 years. He got his start
in Canada and moved to Oklahoma in
2000, and soon started working at Western
Concepts. His favorite thing about being a
chef is that he can continue learning new
things every day and working with people.
Chef Minh loves to be creative in the kitchen.

but this cutie has a big personality: it’s affectionate,
cheerful, smart and playful. Otterhounds specialize in
