Manage your process operations – safely and reliablyAdvances in renewable resource processing technologies, growing market demand and a receptive investment climate have combined to result in a tremendous growth of ethanol and biodiesel production facilities worldwide. Innovation means constantly optimizing processes while reducing production costs. Industrial biotechnology is providing new methods of conversion at decreasing cost. Not only are yields increasing from traditional feedstocks such as sugar, rapeseed, palm oil, corn and soybeans, but the conversion of agricultural wastes and alternative crops is now economically feasible. Billions of tons of non-food-related renewable organic resources can be used as feedstocks for fuels, energy and products.
With its products and services, Endress+Hauser supports the entire biofuel industry around the world, such as in the production of bioethanol, biodiesel, biogas, btl (biomass to liquid) and even biopolymer production.
Endress+Hauser works closely with research centers, process engineers and pilot projects. The company invests a significant portion of revenue each year in the development and manufacture of innovative measurement solutions. In 2007, this resulted in 182 patent applications for developments.
Endress+Hauser is a Swiss family-owned company employing over 8,000 employees who serve our customers in 98 countries. As a provider of process automation solutions, Endress+Hauser has been a trusted name in many industry sectors for over 50 years.
Biodiesel must meet the accept-ance criteria as set out in the DIN EN 14214 standard. The members of AGQM (www.AGQM-biodiesel.de) rise to this challenging task. This mark tells the customer that only quality-assured goods are produced.
The “e” mark and the “stylized e” are registered service marks of the Ethanol and Information Council.

Ethanol – the path to sustainabilityWhen we talk about the development of new resources for fuels, the generation of ethanol is right at the top of our list. The fermentation process for the creation of ethanol was discovered in ancient times for the production of alcoholic drinks, but it was only in the 20th century that the process was refined and optimized to such an extent that sustainable raw materials containing sugar and starch could be converted to ethanol in large quantities. With the growing demand for ethanol as a fuel, the systems have become bigger and more efficient with plants being built today with a production capacity of up to 600,000 t/a.
The increasing scarcity of raw materials on the world market is causing a hike in the price of these materials for ethanol and food. The resulting debate on the competition between ethanol and foodstuffs has had scientists exploring ways to resolve this conflict for the future.
The new innovative second generation processes where lignocellulose is used as the raw material to produce ethanol are currently in the testing and optimization phase. In a short time, we will be able to witness the first large-scale plant. Being able to produce a fuel from the cellulose part of plants is a very exciting prospect since the industry will no longer compete with the food chain and producers can draw on an abundance of raw materials.
Endress+Hauser has been at the forefront of ethanol processes for many years, with a large installed base and extensive technical knowledge. Ask about our global industry expertise.

Measuring solutions for the production of ethanolThe production of ethanol is primarily based on the alcoholic fermentation of substances containing sugar and starch, but the end products that differ from region to region and the process-engineering specifics are what define the production plants. The efficiency of an ethanol plant depends to a large extent on the energy efficiency of production, so optimizing the processes after startup is a primary focus. All the steps from the delivery of raw material and production to the provision of the final product depend on process automation to varying degrees. Whatever cannot be measured can also
not be controlled or optimized. Measuring technology and automation are the core competencies of Endress+Hauser. We have the widest range of process measuring technology solutions on the market today, making us one of the leading providers of field instrumentation in the world.

Reduce the down time
Deltabar – differential pressure transmitter for level applicationsThe flush-mounted, ceramic measuring diaphragm ensures utmost precision and stability in the process. Versatile use in ethanol production, such as the distillation or fermentation process. Functions such as density correction or self-diagnosis save time and cost during commissioning.
Reduce operating costs
Memosens – digital pH measurementPrecise pH value monitoring is critical to optimum fermentation processes. Memosens makes every sensor a digital sensor with an integrated data memory. As a result, sensor-specific and process-related data can be saved directly in the sensor. With Memosens, measuring point downtime is reduced to the time between fault detection and sensor replacement. Sensor regeneration and calibration are fully automated with Topcal S or are performed in the laboratory or workshop. The result is reliable pH measurement with low maintenance costs.
Quick retrofit – smart capability
Temperature sensors and temperature transmittersThe wide range of use of Endress+Hauser’s temperature measuring devices will perfectly match the requirements of new or existing plants. Head transmitters that have the smart instrumentation capabilities needed can be retrofitted in all common terminal heads for resistance thermometers or thermocouples. DIN top-hat rail transmitters can be integrated into cabinets. Highly accurate, two sensor input transmitters are available for the most demanding applications and where condition monitoring is needed.
Versatility – solids and liquids
Levelflex – level measurement with guided radar When feedstock is conveyed to the silo, dust is often produced. This dust can cause some measuring principles to measure incorrectly. However, the guided radar is not affected by these conditions. Levelflex is a maintenance-free, reliable solution both for liquids and for managing the inventories of cereal/corn silos in ethanol production.
Decrease enzyme usage
Promass A – Coriolis mass flowmeterReliable flowmeters are critical to high system availability for safe and reliable production at optimum cost. Promass offers maximum measuring accuracy and measured value stability in the event of very low or very high flow rates, even under extreme process conditions. Mass measurement in the plant – particularly where mash is being blended assures the exact molecular count is made in the mixture. Proper mass balance provides for efficient fermentation.
7 Biofuels
Biodiesel – a fuel for the futureEven in ancient times, products from oil-bearing plants and animal fats, in the form of food or lamp oil, were regarded as important sources of power. With the art of soap-making, additional processes were developed from the 14th century on to produce valuable products from diverse oils or fats. The large-scale production of soap began in the 19th century. With the introduction of oil chemistry in the 20th century, the fatty acids became the raw material source for the most diverse range of products. Even back then, the process for the transesterification from fatty acids to fatty acid methyl ester was discovered and advanced, but biodiesel did not yet enter the discussion.
In recent years, tremendous development has been witnessed in biodiesel – hundreds of production plants have been set up worldwide and it will not be possible to disregard its use as a fuel in the future. Even though the biodiesel industry must first consolidate the huge growth of recent years, biodiesel will continue to play an important role in reducing greenhouse gases.

Efficient and sustainable operation of biodiesel plants
Typical process for the production of biodiesel
The sustainable cost-effectiveness of biodiesel plants in an increasingly diffi cult environment is an enormous challenge for every plant operator – be it the feedstock market forcing plant operators to shift to alternatives and prepare their plants for new oils and thus new parameters, or be it pricing pressure where margins are dwindling on account of new legislation. With Endress+Hauser’s metrology solutions, you can better control your process parameters and adapt them to
new conditions and realities. Only a well-controlled biodiesel process makes the effi cient use of resources possible and delivers a top-quality product.

Single-source top-quality instrumentation
Vortex flowmeters are extremely robust. These versatile devices have long been in use for metering liquids, gases and steam. They are frequently used in conjunction with a flow computer and with pressure and/or temperature sensors for energy and heat metering.
Multivariable Coriolis flowmeters measure density, mass flow, temperature, volume flow and viscosity. High zero stability and accurate measured values are provided without any special mounting measures, regardless of piping and flow implementations. Plant vibration or pipe tension do not impact measurement.
Used to measure all conductive liquids – with or without solids: water, wastewater, chemicals, wet distillers grains, sludge, etc. Predictive maintenance is enabled through detection of corrosion or faulting of the electrodes. Test impulses are sent out while the decay time, or reaction, is measured. Deviation from a reference time is an indicator for preventative maintenance action.
