The biggest contributors to leaky gut include lectin-loaded foods, inhibited intestinal motility (usually due to chronic stress), and a microbiome imbalance. Combined, these factors compromise the protective barrier of the intestine in a few ways: By eroding its mucosal lining; by disrupting the production of a new lining; and by loosening the seal between intestinal lining cells. Once the intestinal lining is compromised, foreign proteins — lectins and other plant and animal proteins not yet broken down by normal digestion — are able to “leak” across the barrier into the bloodstream in high concentrations. So what is leaky gut, and how does it affect your gut and overall health?

Your level of sensitivity to a particular food protein can span from mild to severe; it can alsochange with time, and the number of food sensitivities often grows.

The most common food sensitivities aggravated by leaky gut include: wheat, dairy, corn,nuts, yeast, tomatoes, eggs, soy, beans, potatoes, pork, and beef.
