Skis are now two-thirds shorter since all-mountain skis were introduced and as a result, far easier to turn. But that’s only the tip of the iceberg.

Skis aren’t only shorter, they’re wider too, preventing them from sinking in deep snow... hence the ‘all-mountain’ potential. They’re also more ‘waisted’ for easier carving on-piste and steering off-piste... where the full value of the all-mountain skiing skills, snow and mountain knowledge comes into play.

Since my week with Snoworks, I now make ‘curves’ instead of turns, focus on pushing and edging (and twisting!) skills, rather than worrying about the angle of the slope, the snow conditions and whether I’m doing the right thing!

At last, I am on my way to being able to ski how I’ve always wanted to... moving faster, more controlled and believe it or not, more relaxed too!

I have never skied so much of the mountain in my life – and this was a Piste Performance course...

Despite nearly ten years since the short carving skis revolution, many skiers are still using out-dated skiing techniques designed for the old, long ‘pencil’ skis era – techniques from skiing’s equivalent ‘dark ages’ – before we knew what we were really supposed to be doing.

These past techniques are fine if you’re content skiing (ever busier) marked pistes, from one mountain restaurant to another. ‘LESS CARBON MORE SNOW, TRAIN’Snoworks is a ski course operator and not a dedicated package tour operator, so we are not contracted to any specific method of transport, leaving our clients with a range of travel options to choose from (except ADV Courses).

Snoworks would like to raise the profile of alternative methods of

transport other than flying, in an effort to promote lower carbon transport.

According to www.snowcarbon.co.uk taking the Ski Train to Courchevel, for example, uses 11.48kg of CO2 per person compared to 82.06kg flying, or 220.14kg driving (per car).

The Ski Train runs between December and April with prices starting from £149.00.

Emma retired from international ski racing in 2004 following a successful career competing in numerous World Cups, 6 World Championships and 4 Olympic Games.

Before retirement, she met Snoworks’ founding Director, Phil Smith, creating a formidable partnership, leading to their marriage in 2004.

Emma’s international ski racing experience and enthusiasm has been immensely beneficial to all Snoworks’ course programmes, particularly PRO.

Her recent appointment as Instructor-Trainer for the British Association of Snowsport Instructors further raises the profile of Snoworks.

Off the mountain, Emma can often be seen and heard commentating for Eurosport and was the BBC’s leading female commentator at the Winter Olympics in 2006.
