Blessed with cool, slightly overcast weather, our Racing Team took advantage of these excellent running conditions to post some very fast times and one very impressive PR at this year’s Downtown Anaheim 5K.
Spencer Knight joined the Club and Race Team last month, and in his debut race as a Snailer nailed a smoking 15:12, good for 3rd place overall and first in his age group. Just a few steps behind Spencer was John Gardiner, 4th OA, 1st AG, with Evae Silva, 8th OA, 1st AG and Luis Palacios 9th OA, 1st AG also making it into the top ten.
On the women’s side Leilani Rios had won this race back in 2010 in 18:43, and bettered her time in 2011 to 17:27, 2nd OA. This year she took top honors again in a dramatic fashion by overtaking the lead female during the last 100 yards, clocking an amazing 17:06 PR! Our women’s team, not be outdone by the men’s team, also placed four in the top ten, led my Leilani, then Donna Mills, 4th OA, 1st AG, Sue Zihlmann, 5th OA, 1st AG and Christian Faring 9th OA.
Next Club race is Pride of the Valley 5k, Baldwin Park on August 4th. Look for the Club canopy, bring your lawn chair, and be patriotic by wearing your Club uniform!

The weather was nice and the Snailspace had a good turnout. In addition to running clubs, there were quite a few other groups, including school and youth groups. There were lots of kids running the 5K and a few folks with baby joggers. Overall they had about 1200 runners. Here are the details:
Parking: There was a parking garage with no fee designated for the race. It filled up about 30 minutes before the race started, so folks who came late had to find street parking.
Packet pickup: Crowded, but manageable. They could have used a few volunteers helping organize the lines.
Expo: Surprisingly good amount of vendors and free swag considering this was a smallish 5K. The Disney Travel company gave out free lanyards similar to the ones they sell at Disneyland for $10 each.
T-shirt: Cotton, unisex and nothing special.
Medals: Winners and age-group only, regular participants did not get medals.
Course: Flat with a few 90 degree turns. No special scenery.
Support: Two water stations. Adequate port-a-pots. Good traffic control.
Price: Excellent – they gave us a discount! $17 per person was worth the drive to Anaheim.
VASHON ISLAND, WA. 50K: Why would anyone want to fly to Seattle, rent a car, and catch a ferry boat to this little (about 15x8 miles) island in Puget Sound? Maybe because this someone grew up on this little hunk of rock. I went to grade school from 1947 to 1951 here, and have been back many times over the years with my family. My last time here was in 2004. When I discovered this race in "UltraRunning" magazine last year I knew that I had to run it. Not being ready in 2011, I started training seriously for 2012 in March. My training went well, with lots of support from my "Blazing Snails" teammates of Bobby Porter, Leisa Gac and Paul Shanley on many of my long runs.

Nice trail thru' the woods
Tougher trail
I thought that by walking early and often on the uphills and running the downhills i could average about 13 minutes a mile for a finishing time of 6:43:00. The course record for age 70 and over is 6:43:55, which is held by my old friend and ultra-mentor Kent Holder. Kent was active in our club for years until he retired and moved to Fox Island, near Vashon.

Race day weather was perfect for running; about 60 degrees and mostly cloudy. The race started in a light mist which felt good. The sun would break through once in a while to warm things up a little and then duck back behind the clouds.
The course consisted of a one-mile loop, followed by a ten-mile loop that was repeated three times. About 75% was on single track or narrow dirt trails through the woods. It was beautiful and I loved it. Lots of trees and ferns. The good news: I followed my strategy of walk/run as planned. Bad news: my pace was about 2:30 a mile slower than planned.
Oh well. The course was much harder than expected. The little uphills were much steeper than they looked on the elevation chart, and the downhills were also pretty steep. The trail was also pretty technical with lots of rocks and roots.
Even though the hills were not long, it was hard to get a nice stride going on the downhills due to the steepness and the many twists and turns, so I was unable to make up much time on them. Most of the time, I was running solo and didn't see anyone except the course volunteers and aid station personnel (who were all great) for long stretches of time. It was really fun being out in the woods alone. Somewhere between 15 and 20 miles the first 12 runners lapped me, so I saw them. I thought I was in last place until finally passing a guy at about 17 miles who said he might drop out because he had hurt his ankle.

Just as I started on my last 10-mile lap it started to rain. It was a gentle rain and felt good, but I was concerned that the trails might get muddy and slippery if it rained hard. However, it only lasted about 15-20 minutes. At between 25 and 27 miles, I caught a woman and we "leap-frogged" for awhile. She was wearing a skirt (not a "skort") that came to her knees.
When I told her that my friend (Bobby) would never let me live it down if I got beat by a woman wearing a dress, she let me go ahead. At least she said she let me go. I realized early that I was not going to break seven hours, so I went to plan B: have fun. And I did, finishing in 7:59:21. I was 53rd out of 55 finishers, 10 minutes ahead of the lady in the skirt and about 50 minutes before the guy with the bad ankle. I think there were about 10 non-finishers. (Kent Holder finished in 6:49:30). Would I do it all again? YOU BETCHA!
Only 2 miles to go

Finished!
Two more things: I got to stay at the race director's mother-in-law's beautiful home on the Island and I also got to hang out with a man I've known for 70 years. We went to grade school together and he still lives on the Island. WHAT FUN!
