There is a discussion going around on Facebook: is it proper for Macy’s to open on Thanksgiving? Most of my Facebook friends who have posted on the matter seem to be opposed. This column is not about the right or wrong of Macy’s deci-sion. It’s about Thanksgiving in general, traditions and changes.

The argument against stores opening on Thanksgiving is that it’s a family time and people shouldn’t have to be away from their families to work on this holiday. It’s a sound argument. My mother worked for years at Macy’s and I doubt that she would have wanted to work on Thanksgiv-ing. However, Macy’s employees in New York have worked for years to bring us the Thanksgiving Day parade that they spon-sor. Watching it on Thanksgiving morning is a part of my own tradition.

My father, on the other hand, worked for Eastern Air Lines. Planes fly on Thanks-giving; it’s a big travel day and for many years he worked at the Atlanta airport on the holiday. Sometimes he was home for the traditional dinner and sometimes he wasn’t.

Airline employees aren’t the only ones working on the holiday. The list is long of those who make a difference on Thanksgiving so the rest of us can have a safe, comfortable day: policemen, firemen, EMT’s, nurses, doctors, other medical per-sonnel, and our military keep us safe and healthy on Thanksgiving; and the clerks who keep gas stations/convenience stores and grocery stores open, and restaurant workers who provide food for those who prefer to eat out on Thanksgiving. There are also football players and others who provide the day’s entertainment, television and radio news reporters, as well as our delivery persons who make sure we have the newspapers with all the Black Friday inserts.

Traditions: for some it is a day of lei-sure and family and for some a day of work. As a married couple, Allan and I worked hard to make Thanksgiving a family day, creating our own traditions. The first year we were married, we invited our two fami-lies for Thanksgiving dinner. My family was early; his was late, the turkey was dry, but we were all together and we survived

the first test – after the wedding – of family united.

We’ve learned to go with the flow as the saying goes; maintaining traditions when they work and letting go when nec-essary. Thanksgiving 2001 found our son Peter an American student studying at the University of Ulster in Colerine, Northern Ireland. An original plan for the Ameri-can students to have a joint dinner did not materialize and Peter found himself alone, cooking a frozen turkey dinner. Back home, we enjoyed a family dinner, miss-ing our son on Thanksgiving for the first since his birth. Now that both of our chil-dren have grown up, married and moved away, we have alternated Thanksgiving and Christmas with their in-laws.

As one who doesn’t even like to shop on Black Friday, I don’t plan to head for the mall on Thanksgiving Day. But I am grateful to those who work on Thanksgiv-ing to provide necessary services to protect and make our lives safer and better.

TURNING A BABY By Dr. Derek Conte

I had an interesting Sunday a couple of weeks ago.

One of my long-term patients suc-cumbed to cancer at 80. An extraordinary woman of great beauty, charisma and will, I was to attend her memorial ser-vice that afternoon and say a few words. I took care of her for 10 years.

Earlier that morning I got a call from another patient whose wife, also a patient and in her 9th month of pregnancy, was on orders of strict bed rest at home due to her water having broken a few weeks before.

He explained the situation was tenu-ous and she was due to enter the hospital the next day to be closely monitored until her delivery. But the situation was exacer-bated because the baby was in breech posi-tion and a Caesarian section seemed certain as the baby was unlikely to turn by itself in the absence of amniotic fluid.

The husband asked if I did house-calls, if I could come there and perform a tech-nique at their home which can turn the baby head-down. It’s called Webster’s technique and it involves using gentle pelvic adjust-ments to the rear, at the sacrum, and spe-cific pressure points to the ligaments in the lower abdomen. I told him I would come.

When I arrived at their home I tried to manage their expectations because the technique recommends that the procedure be repeated every other day for two weeks. I told them the likelihood of success was limited by time and the fact that the lack of amniotic fluid would inhibit movement of the baby. With that, I proceeded. After the assessment, I carefully located the pelvic

ligaments and applied a gentle pressure in several locations until the straining liga-ments became compliant. It took about 10 minutes and she was able to rise easily for the first time from the bed without the dis-comfort she’d been experiencing.

I refused payment; it was Sunday; I was on my way to a memorial service. They warmly thanked me for coming; I thanked them for their confidence, and asked them to keep me informed. I went on to the memorial ser-vice and celebrated the life of an extraordinary woman whom I had the privilege of caring for and came to know well.

It was unusual to have a day of such extremes. A great sense of quiet followed me that day; very strange and very fulfilling.

The next day, the same husband and father-to-be called my office from the hos-pital. He told me that when they examined his wife that morning they found the baby had indeed turned, head-down, and a Cae-sarian would be avoided. A healthy baby boy was born to them a few days later. I told my staff the story and they were over-joyed.

I was so pleased to have been useful and a part of their lives and am blessed to have this work. This is the way it goes in the healthcare profession; doctors the world over are doing the same, and bigger things, with their patients every day. Many take great personal risks to do so.

Robert Meyring

By Robert S. MeyringMy Dad forgets my name now, some-

times. He usually remembers who I am when he sees me, but I can see that he’s often searching to recall my name. Then, like catching a thread, he’ll remember that the last time he played tennis, he played against me, and he lost. As a testament to how athletic my father was, the last time he played was actually the only time I ever beat my Dad in tennis and he was in his late 70s then.

I would like to think that by staying active I can prolong the inevitable effects of time on my mind and body. From my family history, it appears that dementia, cognitive disorder; Alzheim-er’s and Parkinson’s disease are lurking on my distant horizon. My grandfather worked as a lawyer over 50 years and was of sound mind when he died of a stroke. When I was a teen, we took care of my grandmother who was physically healthy but with Alzheimer’s disease was mentally gone, fast. Their child, my father, retired over 20 years ago, stayed fairly active, and in the last five years has declined mentally, similar to his mother.

My brother whose life was nearly cut short in a severe accident a few years ago has a lawyer who is in his mid-90s who has been practicing law for over 70 years. This man told me a story about when he had cancer, which was operable, and he had retired at the same time because he was in his late 70s. The doctor said he could not work for at least six months. The old lawyer told me that during the six months he could feel his brain deteriorating every single day. As soon as he was medically released, he came out of retirement, went back to work because he said it’s what he enjoys doing; it’s what he does. As I

spent an hour with my brother’s attorney I learned a lot - or I just heard a lot of what I already knew.

It is my long-term goal to be a long-practicing elder attorney that has the power to mentor younger law-yers as I have been mentored. My daily goals are to enjoy my law practice and practice in a manner that makes my attorney grand-father and my father proud. My lifetime goals include remaining physically and mentally healthy enough to enjoy and remember the times I have with my son as long as I can.

To relieve overcrowded conditions at a school that continues to grow in popular-ity and enrollment, King Springs Elemen-tary School in Smyrna will provide a dual campus arrangement for its students begin-ning with the 2015-2016 school year.

King Springs’ special needs pre-school, kindergarten and first grade stu-dents will relocate to the former Brown Elementary School located at 3265 Brown Road, approximately two miles from King Springs’ current campus. This location will be known as the King Springs Primary School and will house approximately 310 students.

Brown Elementary School closed fol-lowing the 2012-2013 school year and its student population now attends the new Smyrna Elementary School that opened in 2013.

RESCUE PETMy name is Pringle and I’m looking for someone to adopt me. I am a Chihuahua and Dachshund mix that was used as a breeder dog and then tossed aside. I am about 9-10 years old, housebroken, and in good health. I get along well with other dogs and I enjoy walks and cuddling. If you would like to adopt me please contact [email protected].

By Peter Witkiewicz, CSASome years ago, I wrote an article which

was printed in an issue of the Bright Side newspaper about a wonderful-but-little-known Veterans’ benefit called Aid & Atten-dance. With this benefit, qualified veterans and their spouses with health issues can get a substantial amount of money each month to pay for assistance with such personal care needs like bathing, toileting and dressing. How much? Up to $2,085 per month for a married veteran with a spouse, up to $1,758 per month for a single veteran, up to $1,381 for the spouse of a living veteran, and up to $1,130 per month for the surviving spouse of a veteran. That’s a lot of money, and it buys a lot of help.

I am writing about it again because with each passing year there are ever so many more veterans who need this benefit to live more comfortably, more fully, and more hap-pily. If you are a veteran in need of this kind of help or if you are a veteran’s spouse who would benefit from Aid & Attendance, you may contact the Veterans Administration directly, or you can contact Comfort Keepers at 678-354-0102. Calls from family members are welcome, too. If you call Comfort Keep-ers, we can answer many of your questions. We can also connect you with folks who are trained to assist you in filling out the benefit application accurately and completely. This help is provided at no charge to the veteran or the veteran’s spouse, and it often minimizes the waiting time for benefit approval. And for many veterans and their spouses, the quicker they get this benefit, the better.

Interested in learning more? Call.Peter Witkiewicz is the owner and opera-

tor of Comfort Keepers, a local company that provides in-home care to the adults of Cobb County. For more information call 678-354-0102.

NOTES & NOTICES

FIVE WISHES OFFERS ADVANCE DIRECTIVEBy Paula Sanders

It’s important to talk about and docu-ment your healthcare wishes before a healthcare crisis arises. Almost half of Americans say they would rely on family or friends to carry out their wishes about end-of-life care, but most have never expressed those wishes.

Five Wishes (www.agingwithdignity.org) helps people express how they want to be treated if they are seriously ill and unable to speak for themselves. It addresses all aspects of people’s needs, including: medi-cal, personal, emotional and spiritual.

Five Wishes lets your family and doc-tors know:

• Who you want to make health care decisions for you when you can’t make them.

• The kind of medical treatment you want or don’t want.

• How comfortable you want to be.• How you want people to treat you.• What you want your loved ones to

know.

There are two types advance directives: a health care power of attorney, where a person designates someone to make medi-cal decisions on their behalf if they are unable to do so; a living will which out-lines a person’s end of life wishes, includ-ing the type of medical treatment they want or don’t want.

Additionally, hospice is an end-of-life care option that focuses on the patient, not the disease, and is tailored to the needs of each patient and family. It includes expert pain management by treating physical symptoms, while providing emotional and spiritual support. Hospice is about choice – giving people the ability to decide where they want to die, and to do so with dignity and comfort.

Understanding your end-of-life care options is vital to preserve your quality of life at the end of life. For more information about advance directives or hospice care, call VITAS Innovative Hospice Care of Atlanta Metro at (404) 843-6500, or visit www.VITAS.com.

Heather Donahue

By Heather DonahueBoth my ex and I received inheri-

tances while still married. His inheritance went towards the down payment of our house, and my inheritance went towards bills. When we divorced, our inheritances essentially can-celed each other out and neither one of us pursued reimbursement.

But, that’s not always the case.

Typically, an inheritance received during the course of a marriage is considered the non-marital property of the recipient. But not always.

Similarly, student loans are typically considered the sole debt of the person who obtained them. However, you may have put your spouse through school and there-for want long-term compensation. To get this compensation, you may be responsible for some of your spouse’s student loans.

Some things to consider regarding

marital and non-marital assets and debts:Generally, assets obtained and debts

incurred during the course of a marriage are considered marital and subject to equitable division.

Premarital assets and debts are those brought into a mar-riage. Typically, any increase or decrease of these assets and debts that occurs during the course of the marriage is considered marital.

Comingling of non-marital or premarital assets can lead to these assets being considered marital in a divorce (and thus subject to equi-

table division).Consider a prenuptial agreement

before marrying, or a postnuptial agree-ment if already married, to protect yourself and your assets.

Be sure you’re protecting what’s yours! Call Heather at The Merritt Firm, LLC, at 770-433-9345 today for your family law needs.

Atlanta-based TM Restaurant Group today announced that it will open its newest Taco Mac location in Cobb County’s grow-ing Cumberland community.

Opening November 10, the new res-taurant is in the Parkway Pointe shopping center, at the northeast corner of Cobb Parkway and Cumberland Boulevard, just a few blocks away from the site of the new Atlanta Braves stadium.

The Cumberland location will show-case a fresh and exciting look, including the use of the restaurant’s longtime nick-name, T.MAC, while providing loyal Taco Mac fans with the authentic food and craft beer they have grown to love over the last 35 years. The contemporary design of the restaurant is inspired by the cornerstone of the T.MAC experience – genuine food, craft beer on draft and sports on HDTVs.

An expansive bar area, featuring a 58-foot solid wood bar top crowned with 10 overhead aluminum beer conduits housing 96 beer lines, provides a visual connec-tion to the constantly flowing selection of 96 beers on draft including a special focus on Georgia and the Southeast’s grow-ing number of craft breweries. As a more subtle nod to the T.MAC beer experience, two high-top communal table tops contain remnants of beer bottle glass.

In keeping with T.MAC’s tradition of being a great, neighborhood gathering spot to watch sports and drink craft beer, the new

location will offer 64 large screen HDTVs to provide optimal sports viewing all day, every day. Other design highlights include a rich palette of millwork, masonry, warm colors and energy-efficient LED lighting.

Jason Everett, TM Restaurants Regional Manager comments: “There’s been demand for another neighborhood Taco Mac in Cobb for some time, but we hadn’t found the right place until now. We can’t wait to finally serve the Cumberland area and be a part of the growth and energy that’s happening there. We look forward to bringing what we do best to the commu-nity – genuine food, craft beer and a love of sports.”

Emory-Adventist Hospital at Smyrna has served the community since June 1974, offering quality healthcare and serving by its mission “Extending the Healing Min-istry of Christ” to the sick. Now, even as the doors of EAH will close in October, after forty years of service, their legacy of healing will continue. The hospital’s Foun-dation, in place for over thirty years, has raised funds to purchase needed medical equipment and make hospital improve-ments so EAH could fulfill its mission. Throughout the years, The Foundation of Emory-Adventist Hospital at Smyrna has raised money to purchase needed items like Digital Mammography equipment, state of the art hospital beds, OR equipment, ED supplies and more.

The Foundation of Emory-Adventist Hospital at Smyrna felt it was important to continue the hospital’s mission by gift-ing the remainder of its funds to charitable organizations that strive to care for the needy in our community and beyond – A Legacy Gift.

Among the Public Safety officials honored by the Vinings Business Association in October are, from left, Officer Jackie Piper, Officer B.R. Jackson, Captain Hawk Hagebak and Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Milton Beck.

With opening day for the new Braves stadium some two years away, planning for public safety and traffic is on the minds of Cobb officials.

Director of Public Safety Sam Heaton said that while much of the work will be handled by Braves security, Cobb Police, Fire, EMS and the Sheriff’s Office are working with the Braves to coordinate a plan for fan safety and traffic.

Capt. Hawk Hagebak, commander of Precinct 3 on Cumberland Boulevard, is helping lead the planning, using his spe-cialized background.

Captain Hagebak served as Com-mander of the Traffic Services Unit, plan-ning and executing hundreds of special events, authored articles about planning presidential motorcades, and served as an Assistant Critical Incident Commander.

“It’s not as large as the current stadium but it will have quadruple the number of entrances and exits,” he said. “We will get you in and out of their easily. It will not be just a stadium, but a destination.”

The Braves handle security well,” said Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Milton Beck. “We will all be working together.”

The upcoming SPLOST will add Fire Station 29 in the Cumberland area.

“We’ve got two years to work on it and were training officers in traffic and crowd management. You will be surprised how well traffic is handled,” Beck said.

Beck and Hagebak made their remarks as The Vinings Business Association (VBA) recognized all Cobb Public Safety departments during its monthly luncheon in October.

Representatives from all Cobb Public Safety in the Vinings area including Police,

Fire, Sheriff’s Office, EMT and Animal Control were invited to attend and each department got an opportunity to be intro-duced and speak about their contributions and importance to the safety and welfare of the Vinings community.

Cobb Police Precinct 3 officers hon-ored included Capt. Hagebak, and Officers B.R. Jackson and Jackie Piper. Also rec-ognized were Cobb EMS Services EMT Hallie Teague and Paramedic Drew Aiken; Cobb Sheriffs Office Chief Deputy Sheriff Milton Beck and Sgt. Daryl Wilson. Vin-ings Fire Station 5 firefighters Terrance Roy and Alvin Ashurst, also were honored but were called to an alarm during lunch.

VBA President Todd Ash, Branch Manager of the Fidelity Bank Vinings, said, “We are extremely grateful and proud to have Cobb County public safety offi-cials recognized for their hard work in making Vinings one of the safest areas in Cobb, this is a small token of our apprecia-tion for their overall hard work and amaz-ingly fast-response times to the needs of the community.”

By Joan Armstrong DavisSmyrna’s Jonquil Garden Club was

well represented among the Flower Show entries in both horticulture and design cat-egories at the 82nd Annual North Georgia State Fair at Jim Miller Park, Marietta. Several members won prizes in some very competitive categories.

Faith Iskiyan won a Red Ribbon in the first show with her design of ‘Old Blue Eyes’ and a White Ribbon in design for ‘Carte Blanche.’ Last year Faith took a First in this category and won several other awards as well. Vy Shinn submitted a very creative design in the ‘Purple People Eater’ category and won a Second.

First time entrant, Shirley Priest, was stunned when she won a Blue Ribbon for her horticulture entry. “I decided at the eleventh hour to enter… what a shame I hadn’t been watering during this drought!,” she said.

Congratulations to Meg Perry’s stun-ning celosia (pictured) which took First in Flowering Annual, the Award of Merit, and Best in Show.

In the past, JGC members have volun-teered in many areas of the Flower Show. This year’s team included Marilynn Parker, Vy Shinn, Carol Miller, Lenora Clark, Peggy Woods, and Faith Iskiyan.
