My initial experience at SMSU

Face-lift, schmace-lift – we’re talking full-body makeover on the SMSU

campus. Construction and improvements totaling more than $130 million have been

completed over the past few years. Let us count the ways: a new student center, our

renovated library with a bird’s-eye view of campus, the new Regional Event Center, home

of the Mustang football and soccer teams, an awesome new fitness facility, new science

labs, and the newly renovated Culinology® and Hospitality Laboratories. Relax in the

Alumni Plaza, an outdoor, green gathering place. Utilize our computer labs or jump on

our campus–wide wireless Internet. Then chill in the new and renovated residence halls

Learning and Living Communities are co-residential communities

that share an academic or a special interest – one part learning and three parts

fun. For example, students in the Culinology® House have in common their

interest in the art of cooking. Those in the Academic Success Community are

first-generation college students. The Mustang Traditions group energizes the

student spirit club, Mustang Maniacs.

and small classes (average number: 21), you’ll know

your professors. When you need recommendations for

grad school or referrals for jobs, you’ll have plenty of

professors to ask!

Here’s a telling story about our faculty

from a student named Meagan: “I told the professor of my biomechanics class

that I wasn’t sure what to major in, but I knew what I wanted to do. He said,

‘Give me a couple of days and then come back,’ and so I did.”

“When I returned to his office,” Meagan continues, “he told me, ‘Here’s what you

could major in to achieve your goal.’ That kind of personal attention is how I know

I’m getting a quality education.”

In the spring, you’ll attend a one-day registration to help

select your fall classes. In August during Mustang Gold Rush Days, you’ll make

friends instantly and experience college.

During your first semester, you’ll be assigned a faculty or academic advisor

depending on your choice of major. They’ll help you select courses you

need to map out the road to completing your degree.

Faculty and advisors are not the only ones on your side at Southwest.

Staff members at the Academic Commons offer resources for improving

time management, note-taking, and study skills. The SMSU Writing

Center and Math Center provide assistance with assignments. Academic

and Diversity Resources staff helps students improve reading, reasoning,

and study skills. Who needs Facebook when you have friends like these!?

Our Global Studies Cluster courses are designed

for freshmen and sophomores, giving them the opportunity to

take small classes, study intriguing topics, and gain valuable skills

through focused study and research. You’ll take four courses

together – three that satisfy Liberal Arts Core (LAC) requirements,

plus a team-taught Seminar focusing on the location. Then…

travel time! The trip is usually two to three weeks in May.

Students who participate in the Global Studies Clusters develop

deep friendships. After all, when you have learned to pronounce

“Ou es les toilettes?” together, you’re bonded for life.

Liberal Arts Core (LAC) courses provide students

with a solid foundation in key academic areas of reading comprehension, critical

thinking, reasoning, writing, and speaking. A comprehensive, diverse group of

classes focuses on these skills early in your college career.

You won’t believe the amazing

Undergraduate Research Conference that has become an annual

signature event at Southwest, giving students a chance to

showcase their research and other projects. With keynote

speakers, student presentations to large crowds of 300+, and

research posters and student artwork displayed in every nook

and cranny – you’ll never see so many SMSU students dressed

up at once! This celebration of our students’ intellectual

achievements continues to grow every year.

In all classes, we emphasize experiential and active learning instead of

memorization and long periods of sitting in a seat. Don’t get us wrong, our

professors can lecture with the best – but when they do lecture, you’ll be

inspired, not bored.

Active learning includes projects like surveying Southwest students for a

Business Statistics class and comparing the results with students’ responses

from overseas. You can mix your own radio show for a Broadcasting class, or

assess regional water quality to create a presentation on rain gardens for

your Environmental Studies class.

Over 45 undergraduate degrees

and a trio of master’s programs draw students

from all over the state, country, and world.

Commonly selected majors include the

speech communication, sciences, psychology, education,

finance, management, and justice administration.

You’ll flourish as an Honors student by studying with a

group of motivated, like-minded peers. In place of the Liberal Arts Core (LAC)

requirements, Honors students design their own course of study in the liberal arts.

Each student’s program must include three courses from a selected list of

Honors courses and a senior-level interdisciplinary seminar. Students may

also elect to enroll in an Honors project designed by the student and

his/her major advisor. All students are required to complete an hour-long

senior dialogue with selected faculty members.

3,689 fans attended Southwest’s NCAAmen’s basketball regional championship victory inMarch ’09!

SMSU athletic teams have had tremendous success

competing not only in conference and regional play, but on a national level as well.

During the 2009-10 academic year, three Mustang teams qualified for the postseason

national tournaments , while two other teams advanced to the championship game

of the conference tournament. Over the past two seasons, 13 teams have qualified

for regional or national tournaments. Impressed?

SMSU student-athletes not only succeed on the field of play, but thrive off the

field as well. Mustang student-athletes compiled a cumulative 2.9 grade point

average during the academic year and also provided several community service

projects. Some of our athletes enjoy reading to local elementary students while

others volunteer to rake leaves for elderly citizens in the Marshall community.

The NCAA has also honored SMSU athletics in the past three years, producing

the top civic engagement program in the NSIC. The annual Ag Bowl was created

to bring together agriculture, higher education and the community of southwest

Minnesota. SMSU is proud that it is located in southwest Minnesota, a region

where agriculture provides the foundation for the economy.

Students and parents should anticipateadditional costs per year

(personal expenses averaging $2,748, and books & supplies

approximately $1,000). These costs will be calculated into your

financial aid budget for purposes of determining aid.

SMSU offers its students banded tuition. Thistuition allows

students to take between 12 and 18 credits per term and pay one

flat tuition rate. The Banded Tuition option fits well with the

philosophy of the University relative tooffering students every

opportunity to finish their degree in afour-year period.

Second, banded tuition allows you to take 18 credit hours at a

12-credit price. Because of this great bargain, many students are able to add

an extra major, minor, or coaching certification. Third, A whopping 86% of

our students receive an average financial aid package of $9,500 in the form

of grants, scholarships, work study, and loans.

Also, Minnesota's public colleges and universities have established

a state-wide plan to help students transfer in their general

education courses. Completion of the Minnesota Transfer

Curriculum (MTC) at one institution enables a student to earn

SMSU’s general education (called Liberal Arts Core at Southwest).

SMSU alumni work in companies and agencies

like US Bancorp, The Schwan Food Company, UniPro Foodservice,

Best Buy Corporation, Daktronics, Mayo Clinic, and Cargill.

Several young SMSU alums sat around a conference table

on campus recently to reminisce. One said, “I was involved in SIFE (Students in

Free Enterprise) and it just made my whole college experience.” Another recalled,

“I loved the way the small classes helped me get to know my professors.”

These alums now work for several

corporations as a credit-risk assessor, a leadership developer, a

manager of talent and community development, and as a marketer.

They all agreed that SMSU prepared them to meet their employers’

needs for great verbal and communication skills, a strong work ethic,

teamwork skills, motivation and initiative, and interpersonal skills.

They all value their continuing friendships with other alums.

ABOUT SMSUSouthwest Minnesota State University, founded

in 1963, is a four-year public university offering

HISTORYSMSU is the newest of the four-year institutions

within the Minnesota State Colleges and

Universities system. Over 45 undergraduate

degrees and several master’s programs draw

LOCATIONWe’re located in Marshall, Minnesota, a friendly,

growing community of 13,000. Marshall, named

FACULTYOver 200 full and part-time faculty teach all

classes at Southwest – no teaching assistants.

The student-faculty ratio is 18:1. Seventy six

percent of classes have less than 30 students;

97% of classes have fewer than 50 students.

MUSTANG ATHLETICSOur NCAA Division II teams are members of theNorthern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Men’sprograms include football, basketball, wrestling,and baseball. Women’s programs includevolleyball, basketball, soccer, softball, tennis,and golf. Numerous intramural programs areoffered for men’s, women’s, and co-ed sports.

CAMPUSThe 216-acre campus includes a nature centeron the western edge. Our 12 new and renovatedbuildings are interconnected, allowing most ofthe campus to be a constant temperature of 72degrees. SMSU is a national leader inaccessibility!

FACILITIESOver $130 million has been invested in facilitiesrecently, including the Student Center,Conference Center, the renovated SMSU library,the Regional Event Center, the FoundationResidence Apartments, a new 252-bed residencehall, among other enhancements.
