About the Yearbook and the Yearbook Staff

The vision for this book is based off the concept of the yearbook, popular in United States secondary schools. A yearbook is a book that documents different parts of the schooling experience and celebrates the year - 2018! The aim for the book is to discuss different aspects of school, culture, and people, while improving English language use. In addition, yearbooks commonly have a theme for their design. If you can’t tell, our theme is Instagram. This yearbook is all about using photos and stories to bring people together, just as Instagram does. The yearbook was produced by five Form five students, with assistance of their ETA, Kelly Leatherman. They worked from July until October to produce this book. By writing stories, assisting with design, and envisioning the creative theme, they led the creation and development of the book. Meet the yearbook staff below!

Everybody wants to succeed in education. They have determination in achieving their dreams, but some may assume that the only success is to get a great job in any company, without realizing that the realsuccess is when they graduate with a PhD. PhD is the highest level of study, but before that, there are some steps you have to get through.

Education begins when you are born. You have learned to recognize your parents, siblings, and other people in your young life. Then, you officially start your education when you study in the kindergarten. Once you have learned all the basics of studies, you step into another chapter of education: primary school. On the sixth year of primary school, you sit for an examination called Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (or UPSR), which determines your next step: secondary school.

In secondary school, you will sit for two important examinations. These include the Pentaksiran Tingkatan 3 (or PT3) and Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (or SPM). SPM is the most important examination, as it is the only way to determine your future and whether you will continue your studies or not.

If you pass the examination, you can choose whether you want to continue in matriculation, diploma, or Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (or STPM). All these paths will lead you to another chapter in education called your degree. If you pass in degree, you can choose whether you still want to continue furthering your education or work.

If you choose to further your education, then you can continue to your Masters. Then only can you reach a PhD and get a “Dr.” title in front of your name.

Don’t ever think that your education stops after you graduate with a PhD. Always remember that you will only finish your education when your soul is not in your body anymore.

Education will always be there with you as long as you live. Do you think it’s impossible for you to achieve it? If you think you can’t, then you have to change your mindset. If other people can do it, why can’t you?

SPM: How to prepare

Page 5

By Irna

Imagine, you are in Form five. How do you prepare for SPM? Hear from a student on how she gets ready for this big exam. SPM is around the corner! I can’t believe that I’ll be one of the candidates for the biggest and most important exam in my life. SPM is vital as it determines my future. Therefore, I prepare myself by having my own way of studying.

At this moment, I can’t let my quality time pass. Here is the day in the life of a student preparing for the SPM:

4:00 a.m. – 5:30 a.m. I wake up and start studying for at least one hour before school starts.

7:05 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. I go to class during this time and attend school.

7:00 p.m. – 11:30 p.m. After being home, I usually study during this time. I often feel like I don’t have enough time to study. I know it is quite difficult to stay up from 4 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., but it is important to remember that nobody can change my future except for myself. I wish you all the best for your studies, especially for the 2018 SPM candidate.

Jess, a Form five student, spends quality time preparing for the SPM.

Page 12: SMK Baru Bintulu - Yearbook - WordPress.com

The SPM stands for Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia, and it is the most important

examination taken as a secondary school student in Form five.

Subjects on the SPM can include: Additional Mathematics and Modern

Mathematics, Malay Language, English Language, Chinese Language,

Arabic Language, Iban Language, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Computer

Science, Principles of Accounting, Innovation Studies, History,

Geography, Moral Values Education, and Art.

Students do not take examinations on all of these subjects; rather, each

class takes a different combination of subjects. Students are placed into

classes after taking their Form three examination, and are arranged

according to those results. These main separation is between the science

and art streams, and the streams dictate if you take art or science based

exams.

The SPM is an incredibly important part of schooling, as it determines what

college you may attend and what you may study in Malaysia. If you fail, you

cannot continue your education.

What is the SPM? What subjects are on the SPM? Why is it important for students?

Nurin, a Form five student, studies Additional Mathematics to prepare for the exam.

Something that is universal for each country is the act of playing sports. Whatever language you speak, you can connect with one another by playing sports. In Malaysia though, school sports are very different than sports in other countries. In order to play sports for a school, you have to compete in a school-wide competition. Called “Sports Day”, this competition involves students competing against one another to determine who will represent the school in each sport. For a whole week, students represent different teams, and fight to the finish. It is exhilarating to watch the students compete for the spot to represent their school. Read the next page for an account of what it is like to be an athlete at SMK Baru.

SportsBy Daphine

Students also play sports through P.J. class (the equivalent to P.E. class)

These sports include:

softball, archery, chess, volleyball, netball, football, track,

ping pong, sepak takraw (Malaysian game),

badminton, basketball, and cross country.

At SMK Baru, there are twelve different sports to

choose from.

Page 14: SMK Baru Bintulu - Yearbook - WordPress.com

We all have passion and purpose in our lives. I want to be a successful woman in my own career. My passion in sports is so deep. I became interested in sports when I was 12. My first event was high jump. I won the gold medal and represented Bintulu for the next event.

My journey in sports continued in high school. I have changed my event from high jump to triple jump and hurdles. Once again, I represented Bintulu. In sports, I have learned to discipline myself and not to give up easily. Afzanizam, a student in Form 5, also has grown through sports. “Participating in sports can relieve my stress and strengthen my mental health,” said Afzanizam.

Since I want to focus on the SPM, I am going to stop in sports, but plan to continue after finishing my education in high school.

What is your favorite memory playing sports?

“My favorite memory was when I represented Sarawak in sports when I was 15. I beat my friends from another school in the hurdles event. I achieved my target because I focused when I was training. I am very

grateful for what I have achieved.” - Afanizam, Form 5 student and track athlete

One of the teams during the Sports Day Competition in February.

“The most unforgettable memory was when I was training with my teammates in softball. Mr. Adam, my coach, gave me motivation and

strength. He was the best coach for me. Even if you have all the talent in the world, it won’t take you anywhere without your coach and teammates.

Believe it. - Azmin, Form 5 student and softball athlete

Page 15: SMK Baru Bintulu - Yearbook - WordPress.com

I still can recall the most exhilarating part of the competition. My teacher, Madame Loh, gave me a solo. I had to shout. At first, I was embarrassed. When I tried the solo, some of my peers even laughed at me. However, I didn’t get mad. Instead, I trained myself to shout everyday in front of my mirror. I even asked some of my friends to assist, shouting with them everyday before the practice started. Some of the students passing by our practice area may have thought I was crazy. But, I was not bothered by it, for the sake of the competition.

Competition is a part of life that every human being in this world does. Even when we don’t admit it, we all try our hardest to rise above everyone. At school, many students join competitions. They hope to achieve high marks for the co-curricular, while gaining the most precious memories you can experience. Out of all the competitions I have ever joined, the most memorable is the Choral Speaking competition in 2017.

Throughout this competition, I had many positive experiences. This included making many new friends, even though we only met during practice. Sometimes we would recite the script, and relate the songs to other songs we listened to. Then, spontaneously, we would all sing together. We laughed a lot during the practice, making jokes and bonding with each other.

However, being in completion does involve conflicts, misunderstandings, and sacrifice. We are required to memorize all of the actions, scripts, and precisely pronounce each word. If one of us made a mistake, the team’s synchronization was impacted. We also had intense practice for the competition, rehearsing from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Our legs hurt. We sweated profusely. Our throats were dry. But, we continued because we believed that every sacrifice will be rewarded.

After months of long practice, our efforts paid off. I successfully performed my shouting solo, and the SMK Baru Bintulu team won the Choral Speaking competition. It was the third year in a row SMK Baru won, gaining a new rolling trophy. It was the pride of our school. But, we felt the most pride in our unity, strength, and teamwork. For you cannot win a competition without teamwork, and that is what makes competition so special. You learn more about teamwork, while learning the most about yourself.

Making History: SMK Baru’s First Gallery WalkBy Aneelia

On August 11, 2018, the History Gallery Walk started. The main objective of the History Gallery Walk is to make the students of SMK Baru Bintulu love history. History is one of the subjects that all students must pass for SPM in order to get into universities. If students do not pass the History subject, it will be difficult for them to continue their studies, especially at a higher level.

All of the Form five students, especially in the Science stream, must be involved in the History Walk groups. The students must complete the projects based on assigned chapters, and then explain the project clearly to other students and the judges.

In the Form five history book, there are 19 chapters, so there were 19 groups in the History Gallery Walk. All groups had done their best, putting a lot of effort and team spirit for the project. The students stayed at the school, nearly every day until 5 p.m. in order to complete the project.

After the walk finished, the students were satisfied with the projects. The history teachers guided and gave the students encouragement throughout the process of the project. This is the first time the History Gallery Walk has been organized in Bintulu, and was a great success thanks to Mr. Mohan, the organizer. Hopefully this will continue into the future.

Here are all of the participants in the History Gallery Walk.

Music is an important part of my life. It is a form of expression, has no boundaries, and follows no guidelines. For me, music is like air. It has no true definition, yet we need it in our life. Imagine a world without music. All you are left with is dust because music itself is life.

As a student, my schedule begins with the ringing of the alarm clock. The ringtone itself can be considered as music. I have to listen to music every morning before I start my day.

When I am happy, sad, angry, and other types of emotions, it is very common for me to listen to the music genre that is suitable for whatever I felt. Actually, music and emotions are deeply connected. Music itself has the ability to convey messages. When I was in primary school, I used to have a friend that loved music so much. She is a very good pianist, and had taken piano lessons since she was seven years old. Her passion toward music pulled her into a deep love with piano, perhaps as deep as the love to her parents.

Nowadays, popular music genres that catch teenagers’ hearts are love songs. The singers that are famous currently are Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Greyson Chance, and many more. Most of these singers are also teens. That’s why it is so easy to catch the teenagers’ attention to the song.

“Everything is Sound” by Jason Mraz portrays that music will continue to revolutionize and will never die. Music holds memories. Music can spark any emotion, and it can tell us stories. No, you can’t touch music; but, music can and will continue to touch us all.

Television ShowsBy Irna

Do you watch any T.V. shows? If you say “no”, then you have to admit to being a liar. Most people even have a favorite T.V. show, such as romantic dramas, comedies, action, or even cartoons. Plus, a variety of people watch T.V., from children, teenagers, and adults.

There are also a wide variety of T.V. show watchers. This is good, as teenagers may like to watch romantic shows, while other teenagers may want to watch other shows. Now, imagine that there are only romantic dramas on the television. What do you think the people who hate romantic dramas would do? They wouldn’t have any shows to watch.

T.V. shows are useful, especially during the leisure time. When you and your family watch a family movie together, it could tighten up your family bond. You can’t deny it. So, what are you waiting for? Go and watch your favorite T.V. show now.

Traditional CuisineBy Daphine

The Iban tribe are from Sarawak, Borneo. Our traditional foods are called Ayam Pansuh, which simply means the cooking of food in a bamboo stem. The food such as fish, meat, or even rice can also be put into the bamboo stem. The bamboo stem is very unique, and when you cook it, there is a special aroma and texture of the food.

“I like to eat Ayam Pansuh very much. The food can be prepared and very delicious,” said Christine, an SMK Baru student.

Generally, Iban people also love Tuak when they have any special occasion and festivals. This is especially true during the Gawai celebration. Tuak is rice wine, and it is a special drink that is made out of fermented rice with yeast and sugar. It is normally served as a welcoming drink to the guests.

Every year, the Dayak of Borneo, Sarawak celebrates the Gawai Festival. Gawai means a ritual or festival on June 1 every year. Gawai festival is both a religious and social occasion, where the Dayaks

normally visit. This is known as “ngabang” to friends and family.

Gawai Dayak is a rice harvest

festival for the Dayak people of Sarawak, Malaysia. Dayak people can

Traveling through SarawakBy Andrea

Sarawak is a beautiful, diverse state with a lot of wonderful and interesting places to visit. Below are a few important spots you should check out if you visit!

Kuching

Bako National Park, Kuching This is a national park with a rocky coastline. Here are a few more facts: - It is the smallest national park in Sarawak, but one of the most interesting parks. - There are fine beaches, including Telok Sibur, Telok Pandan Besar, and Telok Pandan Kecil. - Bako Sea Stack is a beautiful rock formation jutting out of the sea, and you need to hire a boat to access it!

Sarawak Cultural Village, Kuching This is a living museum where you can encounter all of the ethnic groups of Sarawak in one place and experience their culture, traditions, dance, and homes. The longhouse is a very interesting part. While the cultural show is a bit touristy, you will still enjoy yourself. You may even be invited on stage to join the dance or try a blow pipe.

Darul Hana Bridge, Kuching This is the only pedestrian bridge that connects the North and South of Kuching. Ithas a unique “S” shape design. It opened in 2017 and is Kuching’s latest and most unique landmark. At night, the bridge is a lovely scene with colorful LED lights animating the shape of the bridge which crossed the wide Sarawak river.

The Borneo International Kite Festival is a beautiful draw to Bintulu and Sarawak.

Gunung Mulu National Park This is the largest national park in Sarawak. Experienced climbers can enjoy challenging caving expeditions while other visitors can simply enjoy the park’s exotic surrounding beauty. If you dislike creepy crawlies and flocks of bats, you can stick to the show cave for your adventure. You can also choose from introductory, intermediate, or advanced tours.

Borneo International Kite Festival, Bintulu This kite festival is a special celebration that occurs annually in Malaysia. It is a beautiful array of kites, large and small. There are also several different booths, where you can shop for clothing or try delicious local food. This includes laksa, the most famous of Sarawak dishes. It is a soup based with coconut milk, special spices, and noodles.

Traditional CostumeBy Agneta

Clothes are the thing that we need to cover up our body. I love to wear different clothes and shirts every day. The most interesting and exciting clothes that I wear are the traditional costume of Iban, which is called the Ngepan Iban. It can come in a variety of different colors and styles. Clothes have their own attraction, even though they can sometimes be quite tough to walk in. The other traditional cosutmes in Malaysia include the Cheongsam for the Chinese, Baju Kebaya for Malays, and Sari for Indians.

When the day of the History Gallery Walk began in our school, all of us wore our own clothes according to our topics. One of my friends, Afif, wore something unique that was different from the others. At first, I thought he was a robot - but, he was actually the Hulagu Khan. The Hulagu Khan costume was based off the warrior who conquered much of West Asia. In Malaysia, there is a lot of cultural and racial diversity, and one of the greatest ways to express that is through costumes.

Mr. HisyabuddinMr. Hisyabuddin, or Mr. B, is one of the afternoon session teachers. He also teaches history, and his so friendly. Additionally, he will never forget his students. He can remember faces years after having students in his class.

Mr. PuvaMr. Puva is one of the most dedicated teachers. He is so smart. He teaches us additional mathematics. It is the hardest subject for many students, but he always makes it easier to understand. Sometimes, he even acts like a robot, calculating

math inside his head. When he holds extra classes on Saturday, it shows his dedication. It is very rare to find a teacher who wants to sacrifice his or her

weekends for teaching.

Mr. Adam MohanrajThis is a history teacher. I am never bored in his class, as he likes to make funny jokes. He is like a reference book (even better than Google). He knows everything about history. If you don’t believe this, go to the staffroom during recess time and see him. Just ask him anything you want, and he will answer it.

Mr. MarkMr. Mark teaches English. He is a funny person, and one thing that is noticeable about Mark is his patience. He never gets bored by mundane tasks, such as answering all of the students’ questions, even the questions that don’t

make sense. On first glance, you may assume that he is a “strict” person. But, you are wrong. He is a very friendly and supportive teacher.

Form One Student Features: Siti Nurzana Ellin Chaya BT Rosmadi @ Madi and Amylia Sabrina BT Suhaimi

While Ellin and Sabrina may have different ambitions, interests, and hobbies, there is something they share: their kindness. These Form one students, both in the same class, have a wonderful sense of calm and patience when you talk with them. As you get to know them more though, you see that there is much more past the surface. Both of these students have interesting ambitions: Ellin hopes to be a pilot someday. “I really would love to fly to Australia,” she says. While Ellin will be up in the sky, Sabrina will be on ground, trying to become a baker. However, she also wants to travel one day. “I want to travel to Korea and walk around the city,” Sabrina says. Like many students, Ellin and Sabrina both enjoy K-pop and Korean movies. Whereas Ellin likes to go outside and go jungle trekking, Sabrina enjoys to stay inside and play fun games on her computer. Both also enjoy to watch movies in their free time, and just hang out and relax. Ellin moved to Bintulu about two years ago, previously living in Kota Kinabalu in Sabah. Sabrina, on the other hand, has always lived in Bintulu. Both enjoy going to SMK Baru and seem to have formed a good friendship, as they are in the same class. A fun fact about Ellin is in her past: she used to be a childhood model! However, Sabrina doesn’t share that history. “My sister always wanted me to be a model, but I didn’t want,” says Sabrina. Whether it be laughing about the past, or talking about their futures, these friends have wonderful things ahead for them. Page 28

Form Two Student Feature: Dayang Fatin Nabila Binti Awang Taib

There is something you can always expect when you see Fatin: a smile. Fatin, a form two student, is a stand-out among the students at SMK Baru. Her can-do attitude, reliability, and enthusiasm for school shines brightly in and out of the classroom. However, there is much more about Fatin outside of SMK Baru.

Though she is originally from Bintulu, she has big dreams to travel. She is very interested in Japan, and also enjoys music from Korea (that being K-pop, of course). “I really like K-pop, especially BTS and Winner. My bias is for Jimmi from BTS and Mino from Winner,” said Fatin. In fact, the appreciation for K-pop even extends to her study time. She says she listens to this music when she studies to make her feel calm. When she is not studying, Fatin gets outside through the sport softball. SMK Baru has one of the only softball teams in Bintulu, and Fatin has played since 2015. “I played to meet new friends,” says Fatin. She also likes to jog and exercise in her free time. As she gets older, Fatin dreams of being a baker and opening up her own bakery. Perhaps her first customers can be her family, where she has an older brother, older sister, and younger sister. Though her dream hasn’t been achieved yet, Fatin’s wonderful attitude, friendly demeanor, and excitement for life will certainly bring great things for her in the future.

Form Three Student Feature: Mohd Firdaus Bin Din

If you believe it, you can achieve it. That is the life motto Firdaus lives by, and his hard work and passion is surely evidence of this. Firdaus, a Form 3 student, has lived in Bintulu his whole life; however, his drive and passion to continually do better has inspired him to one day become an engineer.

Besides engineering, Firdaus shows off his work ethic through his hobbies, which include singing, drawing, and dancing. In fact, he even started his own dance crew with students. This dance crew, called the Glorious Crew, was started with the goal of winning the school talent show. With his friend, Slesly, Firdaus and his dance squad successfully won after many hours of practice, practice, and more practice. But, what is most memorable about Firdaus, is the passion and excitement for how he lives his life. This can be seen in his love for motivational quotes. “A fun fact about me is that I love quotes,” says Firdaus. He uses these to inspire him, keep him working, and push through the stress that students can feel.

Though he hasn’t yet achieved all of his hopes and dreams, his belief and hard work will surely carry him far.

Form Four Student Feature: Nurmala Bintin Mohd AminEach time Mala walks into a room, she is bold, kind, and personable. Mala is a Form 4 student at SMK Baru. Though she is very comfortable and confident at school, she hasn’t always felt that way. Mala recently moved to Bintulu, coming from SMK Tatau in Tatau, Sarawak. “It was very hard to adapt to new surroundings when I first moved here, but then I managed to get used to it because of the support that I received from my family and friends,” says Mala.

As for her family, Mala has six siblings - all girls! She is the fifth daughter in the family, and one of the only daughters still in school. Her younger sister, who is in Form two, also attends SMK Baru. Spending time with her family is one of Mala’s hobbies, as they can play “Billionaire” together, work on the Rubik’s Cube, watch T.V., and enjoy each other’s company.

As for a fun fact, Mala says the she is “super scared of lizards, even though many people say that I look tough from the outside.” Though she does have a tough exterior, she is an extremely kind and warm person. In fact, she hopes to use that warmth one day as a teacher. Mala’s ambition is to be an English teacher. She has a special love for the language, and she hopes that it can be a way to connect with one another. “I think teaching is one of the ways for me to socialize with people from different backgrounds,” says Mala. Undoubtedly, Mala will continue to bring a positive impact wherever she goes. Whether it be as a future teacher or friend, she will be a strong and welcoming presence.

Form Five Student Feature: Mohamad Nor Aiman Bin Mohamad Khalidie

This feature is written by Agneta, also a Form five student: A friend can mean so much. True friends are hard to come by, and they love each other through thick and thin. They share with and care for each other. The bond between true friends is so strong that it lasts through our life. Having a true friend is a real gift. It is very valuable, like a precious jewel. The friendship between true friends is always treasured and cherished. However, if jewels are lost, they can be replicat-ed; but a true friend cannot be cloned. I have a vey special friend. Do you want to now who it is? If you want to know, please read until the end. He is taller than me, of course. He also has a nice smile, and is always smiling. Sometimes, he may ignore you, or treat you like you’re invisible. But, that is because he is focusing on his own interest. My friend is very good in photography. He loves to take pictures and the results are superb. He is also good in editing pictures. He started to love photography since he was 15 years old. He is also good in drawing. If you want him to draw anything, just go and tell him. Due to his interest, he is the school photographer. He became interested in photography because he loves cameras. Plus, he was always searching for art and the perfect photos, which made him even more interested in photography. Do you know who is behind the camera? It is Aiman! A form five student at SMK Baru, and a good friend.

Memoria By Felicia Kenneth Phang

Class 2A

Under the sun alone,

I tried to close my eyes, So always and feel forever,

I felt warm come back to me.

No matter how sad, No matter how much tears shed, The moment that felt melancholy,

Will be engraved in heart.

Shine, laugh, and smile, Going around beyond time,

The wind blows, Gone with the tears.

Memoria

Although it’s just a fleeting memory, Memoria

I wake up from a dream, I should prove to the world,

I can become stronger, In the blue sky,

I’m going to fly like a phoenix. Page 35

Rafi’s Rap

By Muhammad Rafi, Class 5S2

Try to put 16 dots on a paperNow fill it with K.Dot’s words, now you’re a rapper

Make it, funny, maybe like Adam SandlerIf those words are hot, that means you need a bigger wrapper

Take it easy no need to speed it up, just keep it up, sipping cup

And line up those punchlines up and your mind upIt’s all about flows and lyrics like logics and science fictions

Kinda make me sick, but we can’t just abort the mission

Rapping is not as hard as it seemsIf we could work it out, then we could work on Martin’s dreams

Sounds impossible because it isMixing words on the table like an alchemist

Sounds corny? Fear none

Once done, give it another run, like a homerunWith no bat, use your head, with no help

It’s all on you, on yourselfStanding up alone, comedian, Dave Chapelle

Rafi’s Rap, continued

Release yourself out of the worst listBe a supernova and rolling over these novices and notice

The change you tamed is getting clearerLook at a mirror, can you hear her?

What do you see, an empty sea or a winner?

Hip Hop is beautiful, it could chill your spineMake your English better, fine and shine, combineBut I’m sure this is going to be the worst guideline

So I apologize if I sound like I’m lying

Don’t let laziness consume you, acting like it’s hopelessI would rather die than drag my family to be homeless

Everytime in class, don’t ever zone out, need to focus

Given chances to go back early, they aren’t the bonuses

If you want to make a track, make sure you get it killAnd go back to study to strengthen up your skillIf you are falling off, find a way to maintain still

Or keep falling off then, because you probably will.

The Dance of the Eight

By Roland Ayong Win, Class 4D

The dance of the eight was a tradition in Rosemary Village. Only the chosen dancers can perform this unique dance. But there’s a dark power who thirsts for blood. The dancers had to stay guard when they were performing this dance even though they were in the middle of dancing. Until, one day, a dancer went missing and was nowhere to be found. The dancers couldn’t perform the dance and their village was being attacked by evil forces. Three years later, a young lady named Mary attempted to solve the mystery behind the dancers.Mary was a young adventurer from the Sun Village. She was a well-known person because of her bravery. Mary began her journey as the day turned to scorching day and the sun climbed towards its zenith. It took four days to arrive at Rosemary Village. On her journey, Mary faced a lot of dangerous situations. When Mary faced her music, Mary heard one soft voice say that she was one of the new chosen dancers. But Mary didn’t care about it. She kept on walking. Suddenly, thunder came marching from far away with increasing threat. A bolt of lightning tore across the sky and thunder followed. The sky above Mary was full of tumultuous, dark, and ragged clouds. Mary could not believe her eyes when she saw a curtain of rain beat down from the heavens.Mary closed her eyes as the rain touched her little hand. But when Mary opened her eyes again, she was still dry! How is that possible?

“Hey there, I’m Dianna, the second dancer,” said Dianna. “And you must be the first right?” she asked. Mary answered yes and asked her about the other dancers. Dianna told her that both of them must find the third dancer so that they have a clue about the others.

“Let’s go find a shelter and I’ll tell you everything about this,” said Dianna. Mary nodded and followed Dianna. They found a small cave. “Let’s rest here for today, we’ll continue our journey tomorrow,” said Dianna. Mary nodded again and they rested until the heavy rain stopped.

The next day, both of them continued their journey. Dianna told her that the third probably lived at a nearby village called Star Dust. (continued)

Page 45: SMK Baru Bintulu - Yearbook - WordPress.com

“Hey, how do you do that trick yesterday?” asked Mary. “Trick? You mean the shield that protected you from the heavy rain?” questioned Dianna.

“Yes,” said Mary.

“Well, I was born with strange super power. I can create things I want,” Dianna explained.

“I think we’re closed to the village by now,” said Mary.

Two hours later, they arrived at the Star Dust Village. But the village seemed as if no one lived there. It was a quiet and peaceful place. Suddenly, Dianna and Mary heard one weird voice call for help. They followed the voice and there was nothing in front of them. But when they turned around, they heard a voice yell “BOO!”. Both of them were shocked when they saw an old lady wearing a white dress and a red scarf around her neck. “I am the third,” said the old lady.

“But, you’re just an old lady, how could you be the third?” asked Mary.

“I was cursed by evil forces to keep me away from dancing,” said the old lady. “I am Deborah, the third.”

“How can we help you Deborah?” asked Dianna.

“You have to bring all of the dancers to the top of Mount Verron and we must perform our dance there,” answered Deborah.

“We don’t have much time Mary,” said Dianna. “Let’s start our journey tonight.”

Mary nodded as she agreed. The sunsets have been glorious lately, all rosy and salmon-pink. Mary and Dianna leave Deborah and began their journey again.

The moon was abnormally large and it bathed the earth with its luminous glow. Their path was so bright as the moonlight had a luminous glow. They walked for about a few hours. (continued)

“Help me!” Mary shouted as she stepped on a quicksand. Dianna tried to pull her out but the quicksand was far stronger than her. Dianna tried to use her super power by creating one huge plank and letting Mary hold it. Dianna pulled her out but it wasn’t going well. Dianna shouted for more help.

“Be gone before your creator!” A soft voice ordered the quicksand to disappear. Slowly the quicksand vanished and Mary climbed up with the dirt.

“Are you okay? I’m Lydia the fourth and this is my- Layla? Layla?” asked Lydia.

“I’m up here sister!” shouted Layla. “That is my sister, Layla the fifth. And both of you must be the third and the second...am I right?” asked Lydia.

“No, I’m the first and Dianna is the second,” said Mary.

“Then who’s the third?”

She’s on her way to mount Verron as she has been cursed by evil forces to keep her away from dancing,” replied Mary. “Let’s find the others…we don’t have much time,” said Mary.

The next morning, it was a lovely walk with the sun setting behind the mountain in a sea of liquid gold. The dancers continued their journey until they heard noises came from the bushes behind them.

“Who’s there?” asked Lydia. Lydia took out her red gold flute. She started to play the flute and suddenly the dancers saw musical notes come out from her flute and the knots fly toward the bushes. As it entered the bushes, they heard a loud voice of a woman shout: “I am Natalia! The sixth! Release me!”

Lydia stopped playing the flute and started to free the woman away. “I’m sorry, I thought you was a bad person,” said Lydia. Natalia apologized as she was making some noises and scared them away. “We’re have to find two more and our mission will be completed,” said Layla. After a few minutes talking, the clouds above them, turned ominous and black while drifting over the mountain. (continued) Page 40

The Dance of the Eight, continued:

Page 47: SMK Baru Bintulu - Yearbook - WordPress.com

They nearly jumped out of their skin when they saw a huge pile of shadow fly away from them. “It must be the evil forces that cursed Deborah from dancing,” said Natalia. “Don’t be afraid dancers! We have to continue our journey and save our fellow dancers, Deborah!” said Mary with a loud voice.

The next day was cold and wet with a brisk wind sweeping the freezing night across the land. And now they have arrived at Mount Verron. “We’re here, but I don’t see anyone here,” said Dianna.

“Hey! We’re here!” They heard someone calling them from the top of the mountain.

“It’s Deborah and the two dancers!” said Mary.

But there was something that made Mary feel weird. Where did the shadow go? The dancers walked to the top of the mountain where Deborah lives. As they arrived they saw a huge pavilion with three people sitting beside. “It must be them!” Dianna shouted. But when they got close to the people, it was just a stick and stone. “We’re tricked!” said Lydia.

“It’s them…” said Mary. Suddenly, a huge shadow appeared before their eyesight and they saw Deborah and the two dancers inside the shadow! They seemed unconscious! “We have to help them!” screamed the group. “Dancers! Show your skills and use them to save our friends!” said Mary. Lydia took her flute out and start to played it. Dianna created a huge shield to protect Lydia while she was playing it. Mary and Layla ran toward the shadow and pulled out Deborah and the two dancers. Luckily, they managed to get them out from the shadow. Deborah and the two dancers awoke as they felt the trembling from the shadow. “This is Tiara the seventh and that is Tiana the eighth,” said Deborah. “Now, to erase this evil force, we must perform the dance of the eight!” said Deborah.

The dancers gathered around the pavilion and Dianna created a huge protective shield to protect them from the evil shadow. The dancers faced a dangerous situation but it didn’t stop them from dancing. The dance started from Mary because she was the first chosen dancer. (continued)

Page 41

The Dance of the Eight, continued:

Page 48: SMK Baru Bintulu - Yearbook - WordPress.com

They danced in a circle but the evil forces didn’t vanish yet. Deborah remembered about the legends rumor: they must dance with a peaceful mind and let their body move itself. The dancers started to relax their mind and let their bodies move itself. Again, they started to dance but in a different way. They started from the eighth until the first. The evil forces started to vanish away slowly as the dancers danced. They continued dancing and suddenly Deborah’s body started to change as the curse has been dispelled! Roses were gathering around the dancers, the wind was sighing, and the tree tops stopped thrashing. The evil forces slowly vanished away from their eyesight. They stopped dancing as they saw the evil shadow fade forever. The dancers cheered and hugged each other for their bravery to erase the evil forces. Deborah thanked Mary as she managed to bring all of the dancers and perform the dance of the eight. Now the village is free from evil forces and they can live in harmony and peace. The dancers continued their duty to protect the village from evil forces by performing the dance of the eight.
