SMITIS Newsletter: Volume 2, Edition 17 1 SMITIS Newsletter 1 November, 2013 Star Mountains Institute of Technology International School Our purpose is to develop internationally-minded and life-long learners who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect, and strive to be: inquirers; knowledgeable; thinkers; communicators; principled; open-minded; caring; risk-takers; balanced; and reflective. The new crossing, as mentioned in the last newsletter, enhances the safety of students crossing the road near the school. For those students and their parents who have to cross the road near the school, there are two crossings to use: the one adjacent to main entrance on Newman Road or the crossing adjacent to the Year 1 classroom in Sogolmik Rd. Unfortunately some parents and students are avoiding either marked crossing zone and crossing Sogolmik Road at the stop signs. It is crucial that parents are positive role models for their children and setting a good example by using the designated crossings. Some representatives from Divine Word University visited the school last week, at the request of OTML, in relation to the future management of the school. OTML has been advised that another managing agency is not the preferred option at the school. Rather, the school should be set up as an independent entity, as it is a self-funding and self-managing school. With OTML buying the SMIT share, preferably the school would retain its current name, so that there is no impact on uniforms and school registration. It is important that the school continues with the IB programs (PYP and MYP) and the expansion of the secondary school. One of our priorities at SMITIS this year is to be a Lighthouse School for other local and district schools. Over the next few weeks, teachers will be visiting SMITIS for lesson obervations. Today, we are hosting a library training session for library assistants. On 14 November, we are organising a Tabubil district schools’ sports day that will target students who are 11-14 years. On this day, boys will be involved in indoor cricket, soccer and touch footy while the girls will be playing volleyball, basketball and tball. The involvement of district school principals in this project will enable us to provide assistance, collaboration and mentoring in an attempt to make a difference in school education and improving student educational outcomes. Star Mountains Institute of Technology International SchoolOur purpose is to develop internationally-minded and life-long learners who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect, and strive to be: inquirers; knowledgeable; thinkers; communicators; principled; open-minded; caring; risk-takers; balanced; and reflective.

One of our priorities at SMITIS this year is to be a

Lighthouse School for other local and district schools. Over the next few weeks, teachers will be visiting SMITIS for lesson obervations. Today, we are hosting a library training session for library assistants. On 14 November, we are organising a Tabubil district schools’ sports day that will target students who are 11-14 years. On this day, boys will be involved in indoor cricket, soccer and touch footy while the girls will be playing volleyball, basketball and tball. attitude.!

This year has been interesting and learning was quite challenging but I enjoyed every bit of it. One of the things that made learning fun was that all things we learnt in a unit were linked to a particular transdisciplinary theme. I learnt that people’s lives are enriched by imaginative minds” which I believe is very true. By Mary NOU

Last week we started working on the new unit of inquiry: “Sharing the planet”. I think this unit is going to be an interesting one because we had fun sharing about our rights and responsibilities and we are going to be learning about why people have conflicts and how they come to an agreement. “… I want to learn for a better and successful future”, Maybellina. “I learn to socialize with others”, Leah. “… there are many interesting things for me to learn and to read books because there are no books at home to read”, Jamielah. “I want to become a geologist”, Venus. “I want to learn new things”, Yekim “I want my little brothers and sisters to see me as a role model”, Joelyn. “I want to get educated …” Dinah. “I want to get good education…” Shantany “ I believe that learning is fun,” Lana. “I want to get educated for a better job,” Celine. “… this school has supplies good education and I don’t want to waste my chance,” Johnny. “I come to school to be creative …” Emma

I learnt a lot of interesting things this year, but one of the things that stands clear in my mind is how natural disasters affect people, here in PNG and in other parts of the world. Some of the videos we watched in class made me feel sorry for the people being affected. I wish I were a millionaire to help the people who are affected by any form of natural disaster. By Venus DOMKI

At the beginning of this year, under the transdiscilinary theme “Who We Are”, we learnt about particular people who were good role models in the world. These role models taught me ‘RESPECT’. I learnt that if I respect myself, others will respect me. I did a lot of good things in this unit and my work went on the wall of fame. I am proud of my achievement..
