What We Know… Government funded scientific research has an essential

role in addressing pressing issues of our time; Recent Pew research confirms the public’s lack of

scientific knowledge is an issue; Choosing careers in science, math and engineering has

fallen behind; For the first time, national laboratories are at the front

lines of promoting their own efforts; Federal laboratories have limited funding to publicize

their own science in ways that engage the general public;

Publicly approved information and media about national laboratory science is already available;

Page 10: SMILE Science US - LLNL/NIF PAO

What We Believe… Media in all forms has the ability to pique the

imagination and enhance the awareness of science in our everyday world;

New communication tools can be applied to current national lab outreach, education and public affairs activities to tell science stories & engage the public;

Producing new media and repackaging / promoting existing national lab media will enhance public interest in a science-based dialog;

There is a role for youth and the general public; This is an extraordinary moment in time…

(WORKING DRAFT)

SMILE Science U.S. stimulates general public and youth interest in science by developing, producing, and distributing the best informal media that captures forward-looking research in our National Laboratories in the area of energy, and its potential positive impact on the environment.

President Obama speech to Congress and nation Feb ‘09

“We are a nation that has seen promise amid peril, and claimed opportunity from ordeal. Now we must be that nation again. That is why, even as it cuts back on the programs we don’t need, the budget I submit will invest in the three areas that are absolutely critical to our economic future: energy, healthcare, and education.

It begins with energy. We know the country that harnesses the power of clean, renewable energy will lead the 21st century…”
