Coupled with a bad diet and a nearly non-existent exercise regimen, Dr. Tan was putting his health at great risk.Seeking refuge in the world of herbal medicine, Dr. Tan tried the Ampalaya capsules or bitter gourd but was disappointed with the results. One day, while at one pharmacy here in Davao City, Dr. Tan chanced upon a box of MX3 natural pure xanthone capsules from the fruit of Garcinia mangostana on the counter and thought that he could give the supplements a try. With nothing to lose, Dr. Tan bought a box of MX3 capsules as his food supplement to aid the medications that he took for his diabetes.'From then on, I never looked back. With MX3 as my food supplement together with the maintenance medicines, all my organs are normally functioning based on the laboratory results of my recent check up," Dr. Tan said. But also, realized that more than ever, am now able to sleep more soundly at night and feel refreshed the next day, the whole day to be exact.During his frst testimony about MX3 and the benefts he reaped from the food supplement, Dr. Tan has been strongly criticized by some of his peers.'Many condemned me for what I believed in. Supplementing my medications with fruit product as a supplement was not a welcome thought for them. But I stand hrm with my regimen as it is effective for me and my condition," Dr. Tan said adding that at the end of the day, he lives by the mantra 'to each his own."While the effects of MX3 may be perceived by some as psychological, Dr. Tan asserts that other herbal products with equally extensive scientifc research were not able to produce the same results as MX3 did for him.Feeling tired at the middle of the day took Dr. Steve Tan away from his work and family, including the time to play with his ten year old son. Even when he gets to sleep an average of 8 hours at night, Dr. Tan usually feels tired after noon and would eventually skip the day to rest instead.- DR. Christmas carols play ad innitum on the local airwaves, and in the shopping malls, the halls are pretty much decked. And were talking the works actual frosted window panes, tinsel, holly and all the things you dont actually see in the Philippines. So if youre not quite ready for the holiday madness, it may be a good idea to take a trip somewhere. For a few days, you can volunteer to help them with their crops in idyllic green peace (page 55). Or closer to home, you can commune with the outdoors in the shadow of Albays majestic Mayon Volcano (page 44). Or why not seek the distraction of extraordinary culinary experiences? Read all about it in Quirky Cuisine (page 68) and start planning your trip. You might also want to make a dent in that Christmas shopping list. Literally, thats seven-ve-three, lucky numbers that are considered signicant in a Japanese childs life. The traditional festival sees parents bringing their children girls aged three and seven, and boys aged three and ve to shrines all over Japan to celebrate this milestone and pray for their kids good health and growth. In Osaka, youll be delightedly exclaiming Aww and How cute! at every local shrine and the more popular Mitami Shrine and the Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine (one of the oldest in the country). There, all the little girls and boys make their way in ceremonial kimonos and haori jackets. Right here, four factors that ensure youre on the right track courtesy of Red Rosales, division head of the real estate developer Vista Residences.1 Its in a prime locationIs the property close to public transportation hubs, main avenues and thoroughfares, business, commercial and entertainment centers, hospitals and schools? If the answer is yes, youve got a winner. Vista Residences Makati condos are in truly choice locales: Mosaic is in Greenbelt, KL Mosaic is in Legaspi Village and The Gallery is in Salcedo.2 Its built by a reliable developerHow long has the company been around and how is their track record? Rosales recommends that you do research, ask questions and exhaust all your concerns. Its only when you are satised by what the developer has to say that you should sign on the dotted line.3 It is managed professionallyAsk residents in the property youre keen to buy into how they like the upkeep of their building. Is it kept clean and regularly renovated? If the condo is already built, look around. Dirty carpets, cigarette burns in the couch or elevator breakdowns say a lot.4 It makes you feel goodHow do you feel as you pull up in front of the building, or when you walk through the door? The bottom line is that you should feel good. We design every condo so that it looks like a sanctuary that beckons and someones special corner of the world, says Rosales. Ultimately, buying your condo unit is not just a decision of the mind, but one of the heart. When you strike a balance between both, thats a sign youre not far from coming home. Hamm was 36 when he nally landed the breakthrough gig as ad man Don Draper. Now tasting sweet success, Hamm has the TV series, and also stars as FBI agent Adam Frawley in The Town (Ben Afecks latest directorial effort). He took GQs International Man Award in September and has three high-prole lms due out next year. No wonder hes in great spirits, as he gamely chats with us at the Toronto Film Festival. Did you think youd ever get that break?None of us would be in this business if we didnt have thick skin. Starting off as an actor, you get rejected more often than you get accepted, and my road here was probably a lot longer and a little more twisted than some. Im sure everyone has a story about walking into an audition room and failing horribly. Im certainly no exception. How did you land the Don Draper role? I was on the bottom of everyones list. I really, really wanted to do it and really responded to the character. I knew it was an enormous risk for the network to put all their chips on certainly no celebrity of any kind. No name to promote. By the time I got the part, it had gone on for so long and Id been so deluded as I had to prepare for virtually every scene in the pilot. [Writer] Matt Weiner told me, Just walk around here like you own the place, because you are getting this part! I was like, well see.Are you surprised by the shows popularity, given your characters questionable morals? Its a curious phenomenon. People are thrilled to watch other people doing this, relieved they dont have to deal with the consequences. Dons life fell apart in this season of Mad Men. What was that like? Its always difcult to try to bring real, deep emotion. You have to be real in that moment. Part of it was being as comfortable as I am with Elizabeth Moss. Part of it was being as emotionally close to the character, four seasons in, and a big part of it was the relationship Don has with Anna [a character from Dons past, played by Melinda Page Hamilton]. We have this history, and it becomes very real. Any interest in writing or directing?I cant write. I nd it terrifying. My girlfriend of 13 years is a writer, producer and accomplished actress whos preparing to direct her rst feature, but I just dont have the focus to do all that. I have the attention span of a hopped-up squirrel. Believe it or not...09LKH SmileSer 4DID YOU KNOW the yoyo was invented by Filipinos to be used as a weapon? Of course you didnt. We Filipinos have many accomplishments that have not been publicized because of the jealous countries that want to take the credit. Most of these achievements are unveriable (hence the lack of publicity), but I have no doubt in my heart that they are true. The most entertaining Filipino invention that is often much too loud is the Sing Along System, otherwise known as the karaoke. Dont believe the rumor that the Japanese invented it. In fact, it was a Filipino musical genius named Roberto del Rosario who did. It was the Pinoy singers working in Japan that brought in cassette tapes recorded without the vocal tracks, or Minus-ones as they used to call them, so they could cut costs on band equipment and performers. The Japanese took a liking to it, and started singing along out of tune to their co-workers delight. The word karaoke comes from two Filipino words: kara, meaning face and oke meaning okay. In short, when the Japanese sing, their faces look okay. The trafc light is another Filipino innovation. It was Teodoro Cruz who came up with the idea when he noticed during Christmas time how his fellow Filipinos would always stop their cars as they enjoyed the different colors of the Christmas lanterns along the roads. He then created the trafc light system using the colors of the Philippine ag. The Americans changed the blue into green, even though colorblind people cant distinguish between red and green. Research the roots of trafc lights;the Philippines is not mentioned. The moon buggy, a space innovation, was invented by Eduardo San Juan, a graduate of MIT (Mapua Institute of Technology). Take a look at the lunar rover and how it resembles the jeepney, the source of inspiration of the creator. Now, these are just the tip of the iceberg. Many more accomplishments can be mentioned but Im afraid this magazine doesnt have enough space for that. So the next time you marvel at an amazing invention, design, or discovery, chances are a Filipino had a hand in it. 042 Laugh Trip.indd 42 10/16/10 9:30 AM09LKH S10Ser 1Phinma.indd 1 9/14/10 11:24:21 AM44 {}Nothing beats a view of majestic Mayon Volcano from a chopper ying 8,000ft up in the air. Why some may be reluctant to explore it may be its moody resident re-mountain, which has erupted almost 50 times since 1616, most recently last year. For the Albayanon, its just part of life. No, we dont mean a boring road trip in any old car. Were talking about an off-road romp in an All Terrain Vehicle (ATV). Like its name suggests, this crate goes where other cars cannot, its 4x4 wheels treading with impunity over rocks, mud and sand (and just about anything else). Licenses arent required for this easy-to-drive vehicle; you ride it like a motorbike: saddle seat, handlebars and all. Then zoom off into the countryside at 40-plus kph. The Legazpi City branch of G1 ATV (tel: +63 (905) 455 7594, www.g1atv.com) runs daily tours, the usual routes passing through pyroclastic highways formed by past eruptions of Mayon. With a carriage like this, one easily turns into a gas-powered adrenaline junkie. Ignore the brakes theyre just an accessory. A ip of the switch feeds the 150cc motor, taking you over a boulder-strewn landscape of black volcanic turf. You cross gullies and streams and pass smiling locals and cud-chewing cows. This is one totally rocky ride; and by the end of it youll be caked with dirt and splattered with mud. But youll want to do it all over again. G1 ATV jock Cyril notes that their vehicles arent just suited for joyrides. During last years eruption alert, TV camera crews kept asking to rent their ATVs so they could enter the danger zone an evacuated area spanning 8km around the smoldering crater. Thankfully today there are few restrictions, and one can even drive up to a fearsome reminder of Mayon Volcanos power: an impossibly high rock wall, the remains of a lava ow from a 2006 eruption.46 {}Get behind an All Terrain Vehicle and embark on a wild off-road adventure through lava beds and river crossings. Thankfully, one doesnt need to take the grueling, 10-hour trek up the Mayon mountainside to enjoy the slower pace. Away from the volcanos shadow, other adventures await. One of these is a walk through Vera Falls, about an hours drive north of Legazpi. A 1km-long downward trek from a nearby village leads to this hidden ravine, which features a 25m-high cascade over a crystalline pool. Campers will appreciate the solitude offered by this little-known spot. Here youll luxuriate in soothing winds blowing through unfettered forest, and civilization will feel like a world away. You can also make a different kind of descent. Outside the town of Camalig lies the Calabidongan Cave, a network of natural tunnels that reach deep into the earth. Bring a ashlight and your cojones if you wish to enter this realm; from the rock entrance, would-be spelunkers wade into the darkness, through a chest-high river that opens into a cathedral-like chamber. To reach this breathtaking formation is enough accomplishment for most newbie cavers. On the other hand, more experienced souls often choose to plunge further into the depths below.49 {}Get ready to hike 1,200m through thick vegetation to get to the falls!Vera Falls, an hours drive north of Legazpi, features a 25m-high waterfallthat cascades into a clear pool of water. There are no long-winded pre-ight rituals on this trip. You just get on the aircraft, warm up the engine and go. From the helipad at Legazpi, your pilot heads to the volcanos base and then up the mountain, till your face to face with Lady Mayon herself. The couple made a bold move. They left Osaka and moved to the countryside where life promised to be simpler. They moved to a small village, a train ride and then a bus ride away, totalling a two-hour journey. In their landscape, Osakas gray concrete environs have given way to lushly mesmerizing green vistas. In the slower-paced milieu of the small farming town, it is easy to see why a city-ed couple chose to make as drastic a change as Koji and Mari did. Ayabe is a sleepy town nestled in the mountains of Kyoto prefecture. But Koji and Maris home is deeper still, further into the rural countryside. There are no businessmen in suits and no icker of neon lights here. There are just the hours between dawn and dusk, and people tilling the land. In the car, on the way to the village, Mari talks about her past life, and her 16-month-old son Yuuki listens as though he understands perfectly. My husband was a postal worker in Osaka, while I worked at the help desk of a company, she shares. The life in a Japanese city is so hectic, and Koji and I wanted a slower pace of life. So we decided to come here. Here is a tiny village called Ichishi. There are only 20 houses, and several of these stand empty. The roads near their home are even narrower as steep-sided mountains start to close in, so you cant get a signal for your mobile phone. Here we are, home, Mari says, pulling up the car in front of their house. You know, my son was the rst baby in 40 years to be born in this village? The house, made mainly of wood, is the couples own design, and it is so much more spacious than the average Japanese city dwelling. Several standing fans blow fresh country air through the rooms, and there isnt a single air-conditioner in sight.Koji is waiting in the driveway. The family welcomes guests with cups of Mari and Koji Satono and baby Yuuki have lived in the sleepy village of Ichishi for the past three years. Hes obviously content with his lot, and who wouldnt be, when the ve-minute walk to work is enhanced by lush nature scenes and fresh air? What weve done is to borrow the farmland for free and then we grow rice and vegetables, which we sell mostly to friends back in Osaka, Mari explains. They also joined World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF), an organization that puts host farmers in touch with volunteers. The WWOOF was established in the United Kingdom in 1971 and now has more than 6,000 hosts in 88 countries. WWOOFers, as these volunteers are called, are usually people who would like to spend time working on an organic farm while learning about the basics of green living. In return, the hosts offer accommodations, meals, information about living eco-consciously and even basic Japanese language lessons if the WWOOFers desire. At the moment, Mari and Koji have three WWOOFers at home, students from overseas who are keen for cultural exchange. Interestingly, WWOOFers dont have to be students. They can be tourists from out of town, or they can even be city dwellers from big cities like Osaka or Tokyo, people who are eager to experience rural living. Anyone can World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF) can provide you with a different kind of vacation. Since Koji and Mari wanted to spread the word about organic farming and country living, so far theyve hosted about 80 WWOOFers from around the world. Some stay for ve days, others for even as long as two months. The volunteers at the Satonos work from 7am10am. Since noon is the hottest time of the day, thats designated as rest time. They resume their farm duties at around 3pm and toil until 6pm. We try to provide volunteers six hours of work a day, says Koji. However, snow in winter makes farming impossible. Whats more, the bitter cold makes it imperative for him to chop wood for the stove to heat their home. Shortly before 3pm, the WWOOFers wake up. Alef, 18, and Adrian, 19, are from Sweden, and Kana, 29, is from Kyoto. They walk down the hill to the farm, amid the chorus of singing cicadas and crickets. On the way, Adrian talks about why he and Alef are WWOOFing. We thought it was a great way to spend some time with a Japanese family, learn more about the culture, and improve our language skills. They also happen to be big fans of Japanese pop culture. But knowing they wont nd any signs of Ayumi Hamasaki out here in Ichishi, they have arranged some time at the end of their trip to indulge their pop music passion back in the city.Adrian loves the simple life. Its interesting to experience a side of Japan we dont hear so much about, he says. While being uent in Japanese is not required of WWOOFers in Japan, knowledge of a few phrases will make the experience more rewarding. Today, the volunteers must tidy up a small eld so that a new crop of fuki (butterbur) can grow freely. Ive never spent much time in the countryside and I wanted to see it for myself, says Kana as she gets her hands dirty in the soil. Koji points out a little frog amid the weeds. Its a long way from home, says Adrian as the river is some distance away. Just like you then, quips Kana. After several hours, the eld is neat as a pin, and WWOOFers whistle as they nish work.
