Principal’s Message— Mr. B. White O ur Founders Day Concert was a wonderful event bringing the school community together to celebrate with music the founding of our school. This year, our celebration included the first ever performance of the Mass of Saint Michael the Archangel by renowned composer, Paul Halley, commis- sioned by Cardinal Collins. It was wonderful to hear the sound of the entire student body singing together at the conclusion of the concert. For those families new to our school, it powerfully conveyed a sense of community achieved through music. With students from Grade 3 to Grade 12, the school‘s mission, ‗to educate boys to become men through the service of sa- cred music‘, was evident for all to see and hear. Principal’s Message— Mr. B. White
O ur Founders Day Concert was a wonderful event bringing the school
community together to celebrate with music the founding of our school.
This year, our celebration included the first ever performance of the Mass of
Saint Michael the Archangel by renowned composer, Paul Halley, commis-
sioned by Cardinal Collins. It was wonderful to hear the sound of the entire
student body singing together at the conclusion of the concert. For those
families new to our school, it powerfully conveyed a sense of community
achieved through music. With students from Grade 3 to Grade 12, the
school‘s mission, ‗to educate boys to become men through the service of sa-
cred music‘, was evident for all to see and hear.
Our second annual Alumni Homecoming event was a success. It was great to hear from the for-
mally constituted Alumni Association and to connect with past students and staff at the reception
that followed the mass.
Our Strategic Renewal continued in October as Arthur Haberman held several sessions, meeting
with teachers, with alumni and with parents. If you haven‘t had a chance to participate yet, Arthur
will be holding another open forum on the evening of Tuesday November 19th.
In the pages that follow, you can see how busy our students and staff have been over the past
month, both in and beyond the classroom. We head into November looking forward to progress
reports, parent interviews, Remembrance Day, in addition to all of the various extra-curricular ac-
tivities as we gear up for Massey Hall with rehearsals, ticket sales and run-out concerts. We look
forward to seeing many of you as we gather for our multi-cultural pot-luck dinner on Friday,
November 8th!
WELCOME!!!!!!!
W e are pleased to welcome Mr S. Rubacha who has assumed
the position of teacher for our Grade 7 and 8 English
classes, taking over from Mr. Lewis who has gone to the board to
help in-service teachers on the use of technology. Mr Rubacha joins
our team bringing with him experience at the intermediate level,
experience and interest in the use of technology in the classroom,
experience with coaching and with student leadership initiatives. He
has been in communication with Mr Lewis in order to provide conti-
nuity for our intermediate students. We are pleased to have Mr
Rubacha join our teaching team and I know that you will welcome
him into our school community when you have the opportunity to
W ith the school year well underway, the CSAC Executive would like to provide an update of a
few of our fundraising activities:
CSAC Family Fee – thank you for your support of our Family Fee program. The initial response has
been excellent – thank you again! For those who haven’t yet participated in the program, we hope to
count on your contribution and thank you in advance for your support. We have extended the dead-
line for submission of the fee to Thursday November 14th , 2013
Fall Lunch Program – The SMCS Lunch Program has had a very strong start to the year. With over 170 staff and students registered, and the introduction of Mr. Greek and Subway lunches, it continues to be a Friday favourite. We would like to thank all of the volunteers who make this program a suc-cess. Without this very dedicated group, the Lunch Program would not exist. If you are interested in volunteering for the lunch program, or if you have any questions, please contact Pina Povolo at [email protected]
As we look forward to this year’s budget planning process, we will have a quick review of recurring
expenditures from past years which includes library support, sports programs, classroom support,
leadership programs, student council, and the speaker series, among others. As well, periodically the
parent community through CSAC supports one-time expenditures, intended to improve facilities and
equipment for extra-curricular activities for our boys to help round-out the experience here at the
School. In previous years, these have included weight room equipment, a scoreboard for the gym, spot
lights for the auditorium, musical instruments, and microwaves for the lunchroom.
Multicultural Pot Luck – St. Michael’s Choir School CSAC would like to invite you to our Annual Multi-
cultural Potluck Night. The potluck will be held on Friday, November 8th, 2013 in the school gymnasium
from 6:30 to 9:00pm. This is a wonderful event that celebrates the diversity of St. Michael Choir School,
allowing parents from all grades to break bread together in an informal gathering. Please confirm your at-
tendance with your class captains.
We look forward to your continued support for all the events that fill out the CSAC calendar through-
out the year. As you can see, your efforts go a long way and together we can do more and do better to
support our boys and enrich their lives here at St. Michael’s Choir School.
