Page 2: SMCDS Annual Report

Dear St. Michael’s Community Members,

We are blessed at St. Michael’s with an amazing array of support from trustees, parents, grandparents, and alumni families in our community. As I look through the pages of this Annual Report, I am so impressed that so many people give so much time and joyful energy to so many community activities. From Parent Association participation to lunchroom volunteers, from alumni giving to trustee leadership, from student service projects to faculty recognitions, the St. Michael’s family clearly sends our students a message of warmth, generosity, and community engagement.

I am honored to follow in the footsteps of my predecessor, Whitney Slade. His legacy is nowhere more visible than in his Commencement remarks about each and every graduate shared in this Annual Report. Children

are important people in this school community and I am proud to further this legacy of Whitney. Students in the graduating classes of 2015 and beyond will continue to be celebrated for their unique character and spirit.

Thanks to your financial generosity, we have been able to fund a variety of projects and critical requests from our outstanding faculty and staff including renovation of the Mason House Library, entryway, hallways, and offices; establishment of the Whitney C. Slade Scholarship; continued expansion of our endowment funds for financial aid; and recognition for faculty who have demonstrated teaching excellence and a commitment to professional development. Additionally, we have laid the foundations for future excellence at St. Michael’s through planned giving bequests.

I would especially like to recognize our 14th Neighborhoods of Newport House Tour Co-Chairs, Clare Craig and Roselle McConnell, our loyal House Tour sponsor, John Peixinho from Franklin & Company Design Associates, and the legion of parent/faculty volunteers that made this event possible. There is an unmistakable strength of community that draws from a project of this scope and magnitude.

We teach our children at a very young age that generosity is a meaningful, lifelong experience. Thank you all for the ways you model success for our children. Thank you all for your generosity!

Sincerely,John H. ZurnHead of School

The St. Michael’s Country Day School class of 2014 was honored June 11 at the school’s 76th Commencement ceremony. Head of School Whitney C. Slade welcomed the graduates and special guests in attendance. Kristin and Chris Basso, parents of Ryan ’05, Colin ’07, and Kerrin ’14, delivered the opening remarks followed by the singing of “America, the Beautiful” by all assembled under the tent. Whitney C. Slade was the commencement speaker. Following a brief personal tribute to each graduate by Mr. Slade, Board President Bethany Di Napoli handed out the diplomas.

Four of the graduates were honored for their contributions to the school. The William F. Whitehouse Cup, awarded annually to the student who has maintained the highest academic scholarship for the year, went to Camden Baer Johnson. The James Green Memorial Cup, for the Middle School boy who best exemplifies the spirit and ideals of the school, went to Michael Frederick Ashby. Hannah Noel Brennan was the recipient of the Stanley C. Hughes Memorial Medal, awarded to the Middle School girl who best exemplifies the spirit and ideals of the school. The Alan F. Flynn, Jr. Flag, which is awarded to the student who, in the opinion of the Head of School, has assumed a position of responsibility and trust within the school and carried out those responsibilities while maintaining a commitment to academic achievement, was presented to Julia Lucille Ludwig.A new award at Commencement was established this year honoring Whitney C. Slade and his dedication to the arts at St. Michael’s. The

Whitney C. Slade Excellence in the Arts Award was presented to both Camden Baer Johnson and Hannah Noel Brennan.

Four individuals were also recognized for their efforts made on behalf of St. Michael’s. Clare Craig of Newport received the Clarissa Palmer Volunteer Service Award, which recognizes those who give selflessly of time and talent to St. Michael’s, moving the school in a positive direction. Mary LoPresti of North Kingstown received the Andrew Christensen Award, presented to the individual who has given to the school selflessly and wholeheartedly. Karen Andrade and Tami Holden were awarded the Canepari Summer Faculty Scholar Fund honoring excellence in teaching and a commitment to professional development.

The Eighth Grade graduation speaker this year was Tina Richards. Middle School history teacher Tim McMahon delivered the closing remarks, and the ceremony concluded with the singing of the school song.

CHRISTOPHER R. ADAMChris your time at SMS has been relatively short, and you have made a tremendous positive impression. Most obvious is your prowess on the athletic field, but your sportsmanship is even more impressive. Chris, you led by example, and you always put team before self. You were a steady, upbeat influence within your class. You brought this positive attitude to your kindergarten buddy relationship with Avery. You are a guy that distills ideas and comes up with some real gems. Chris you have solidified your academic profile. You have the brain to match the brawn. Chris you are a scholar, gentleman and maybe someday a Div. 1 hockey player.

MICHAEL FREDERICK ASHBY James Green Memorial CupMichael, you are the gentleman of the group. Often soft spoken, kind, and sensitive, your demeanor covers a burning desire to compete on the sports field. You are a talented athlete and a stalwart on many SMS athletic teams. I have had the pleasure of coaching you for many seasons. In theatre tech, you were the ‘stealth’ behind the scenes stage crew - always dependable, always there. You quietly gained confidence in your academic game this year, putting together honors grades and receiving honors recognition on the national Spanish exam. Michael, your dignified presence will be missed around our halls, but your big heart will carry you far.

KERRIN ELIZABETH MORIARTY BASSOAs the third child in the Basso line following two brothers, many of us have seen you grow up here at SMS with Mr. T tossing you in the air. Now you are a mature, young woman. Kerrin, you have a creative streak that runs through everything you do. Mr. McMahon said you always create a project with some special artistic twist. Your bridge won the most weight held contest in physics class. Ms. Keohane said your monster tower was fantastic. She said you always think through your artwork. You have a real flair and dedication for computer graphics like your brothers. Kerrin, what a portfolio you have created while at SMS!

HANNAH NOEL BRENNAN Stanley C. Hughes Memorial MedalWhitney C. Slade Excellence in the Arts AwardHannah, you are a singer, dancer, actress, and public speaker. Add ambassador to the list. Mr. McMahon was so impressed by the way you reached out to the Rocky Hill kids on the Quebec trip. Hannah, you are queen of the SMS stage. Your versatility, dedication and passion for the theatre make you a treat to watch. I have sat rapt by your stage presence and countless roles, including a captivating Portia in last summer’s Merchant of Venice, Max (the timeless dog) in The Grinch, and a vicious Guy of Gisborne in Robin Hood. You were no slouch in the classroom. Mrs. Holden said you were deeply engaged in every book. Hannah, you have talent and a supreme humanity about you that may lead to the world stage.

THEODORA M. DELGIUDICETia, it has been quite a year for you! I saw you as a reluctant leader who stepped up this year to demonstrate your natural leadership skills. Mrs. Holden called you the “queen of figurative language.” Mr. McMahon said you have spent time on great causes, such as helping African women in the City of Joy and your prize-winning essay in the Gandhi essay contest. You know something about the connection between peace and conflict. You are a force in the classroom, developing a confidence that is impressive. You won 2nd place in Rhode Island and earned a silver medal nationally on the National Spanish exam. Tia, I know you will continue to grow into all of your talents.

CAMDEN BAER JOHNSON Whitney C. Slade Excellence in the Arts AwardWilliam F. Whitehouse CupCamden, there is not an academic accolade that you do not deserve! You have a great work ethic. You are the owner of the greatest number of chairs (10) in Mr. Hileman’s class. Mrs. Hileman sang your praises as a ‘techie extraordinaire’ who was always at the ready to make the back stage experience the best. I saw you take a leadership role on the lacrosse team this spring. You led by example - always hustling and always encouraging teammates with your great attitude. Cam, you are a huge success at SMS. I have no doubt that you will be a huge success wherever you go.

8 SMS/ANNUAL REPORT

JULIA LUCILLE LUDWIG Alan F. Flynn, Jr. FlagMr. McMahon said it the best, “Julia is like bottled enthusiasm on the stage and the sports field, in her art work, and in the Gandhi essay contest. She is ready to bring the house down.” Julia, there really isn’t one corner of this campus that your positive influence has not graced. You brought an enthusiasm and dedication to the classroom that is unrivaled. For example, Mr. Drayton said you designed a boat in physics class that held five times the minimum amount required of at least 50 pennies or 32 grams, and yours held 516 grams. You won the Coaches award in soccer and, Julia, I am still scared of you as the wicked, ruthless Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood.

LILLIAN MAE MOLINARILilly, you immediately embraced your new school, and it embraced you back. I remember your poignant personal story in public speaking class about what it is like to be the new kid multiple times. It did not faze you. Lilly, you are a quick learner. Your teachers were impressed with your ability to advocate for yourself. Your personal monologue that you read in front of the entire middle school about your crush was the ‘crown jewel’. Mr. McMahon said, “That takes guts.” A tennis player of some renown, you braved the lacrosse field for the first time this fall. Lilly, you have reaped many successes, and we are better for your being with us just one year.

KARLA MARIE NORTONKarla, we had some great advisee/advisor talks. You have much to be proud of during your time with us. Mrs. Keohane loved your monster tower with the great saying, “Look beyond the evil and find the good within.” Señora Ashby said your teachers next year will be impressed by how well you write in Spanish. Your writing in English class was also very strong. You are a caring individual, Karla, always quick with a hug and quick to speak your mind. I admire your pluck. Karla, I have no doubt you will be a huge success next year.

TINA RICHARDSTina, it has been a privilege to watch you grow and mature into the fine young woman standing here today. You are poised and passionate. Your personality is vibrant. Tina, you wrote beautifully about your personal story and your deep love for living near the water. You are a caring, empathetic girl. You are a fantastic sister to Eva and best buddy to Serenity in kindergarten. You bring a smile to everyone’s face. Tina, you exude confidence that is infectious. You have mastered SMS and certainly we will miss you, but we cannot help feeling confident that you will master high school with the same grace and character.

NIKOLAS E. SCHOOLSNik, what a fabulous addition you have been to this class. Your quick and very dry wit endeared you to your teachers and classmates. It is not easy to break into a class that has been together for many years. Nik, you did it with style and diplomacy. I applaud your willingness to play basketball and improve as you did. I really applaud your willingness to play lacrosse for the first time. You made the right side of the defense your own. Mr. Drayton said your boat was the most creative in physics class and probably a metaphor for your fun loving personality. Nik, please continue your class act next year in high school.

BRIANNA NICOLE SEGERSONBrianna, you used to hang outside my door waiting for the next vocabulary word when you were in Lower School. Today, you are never at a loss for words. Your impish grin always suggests there is a lot going on inside that marvelous brain of yours. Mrs. Hileman applauded your versatility in tech and dubbed you the ultimate wardrobe mistress. Mrs. Keohane marveled at your meticulous creative approach in studio art. Your zest for fun has not interfered with being a solid student. You seemed to have struck the right balance. Brianna, your outlook is that the world awaits you, and you are going to embrace it with gusto.

GRACE AVA SIWICKIGrace you are last but certainly not least. Your ability to grasp inferences is unrivaled. Your writing is strong and nuanced as evidence by your recognition in the URI Gandhi essay contest. Mr. McMahon loved how you were always creative in making your points in history class. Grace, you were an assassin on the lacrosse field. It was poetry in motion watching you run away from the opponent and nail another goal. Your abilities in sailing and horseback riding outside of school may make it difficult to decide which sport to pursue in the future! We know your high school is going to be very fortunate to see the full array of your skills. Grace, we have seen only the tip of your talent iceberg this year.

Early Childhood Graduation

The Cottage Year End Ceremony was held on June 9 in the Hill House. The preschool, prekindergarten and kindergarten children all took part in this annual tradition. The ceremony began with a procession of the children. They then sang “Big Rock Candy Mountain”, “Feelin’ Groovy” and “The Teddy Bear’s Picnic”. The kindergarten children also sang two songs they learned in French class. Mrs. Abraham announced the names of the prekindergarten students. Each kindergartener was called to the microphone where he/she shared a favorite memory of kindergarten and was then presented with a certificate by Mr. Slade. The ceremony ended with all the children singing the St. Michael’s School song. Following the ceremony the children, their families and teachers gathered at Brenton Point State Park for a picnic. It was a great day and and exciting milestone on these children’s educational journey.

‘Tran-si-tion:’ a change from one state or condition to another…

The 2013 – 2014 year began with planning for transition. Preparing for a change in school leadership after sixteen years would be a tremendous challenge. Change does not always come easily. It is not always embraced, but to not embrace change is to not embrace opportunity.

After sixteen years, St. Michael’s began the school year meeting candidates from across the country as part of an exhaustive and inclusive process to select our new Head of School. The process began last year and successfully concluded in October with the announcement that John Zurn would be St. Michael’s 14th Head of School. The Search Committee made a profound commitment to this months-long process. They did so because they care about St. Michael’s - its future, its success, its culture and its community. They made this commitment on behalf of our students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni and future constituents of St. Michael’s. It was the most important strategic decision our school would face for the next several years. I extend my deepest gratitude to the Search Committee for their diligence and professionalism. I was equally proud of our school community. Faculty, staff and parents welcomed candidates warmly and demonstrated interest in participating in the process. You made the candidates want to be part of our school community and for that I thank you!

With the search process complete, the Board turned its attention to other issues that impact our school’s future - facilities, finances and enrollment. Regarding facilities, we engaged in a major renovation project in the Mason House this year. The Mason House Improvement Project was undertaken to improve the condition of the common areas that needed extensive repair and restoration. Thanks to the generous support of an anonymous donor and Stephen and Harriet DiCicco, we were able to make significant improvements to the aesthetic appearance of the Mason House and, most notably, the careful restoration of the original library. We now tour visitors with pride. Furthermore, the Mason House is a significant architectural treasure as it is one of the few Irving Gill designed homes on the East Coast. We need to remain committed to preserving its integrity by making further improvements to ensure the Mason House continues to meet the needs of our school community while, at the same time, honoring the historic nature of this treasured building. As part of the budget planning process for the ’14 – ’15 school year, the Board made the decision to contain tuition increases to 3% which is the lowest increase in four years and well below the regional average. The Board is having conversations about the long-term affordability of our school and will be investigating ways to keep tuition affordable for our families. An in-depth analysis of our enrollment management program was conducted by an outside consulting firm to analyze local demographics, the school’s marketing materials and website, and our tuition model. We will use this report to improve how we attract new families to SMS and build enrollment and revenue.

A Message from the Chair of the Board of Trustees

Page 17: SMCDS Annual Report

Furthermore, the Board is very excited to have acquired Newport Montessori this past spring. Adding valuable resources, educational materials, and early childhood learning expertise will enhance our quality program and enrich the experience of our youngest learners. We welcome those families who will be transitioning from Newport Montessori to St. Michael’s and look forward to having them join our school community.

As the academic year entered its final days, our school community came together at the end of May for a fantastic celebration in honor of Whitney Slade. It was an evening filled with laughter, warmth and tears followed eleven days later by our moving Commencement exercises. Whitney delivered the Commencement address comparing his ‘transition’ to that of the graduating class. We pay our deepest respect and appreciation to Whitney for his dedication and service to St. Michael’s for the past sixteen years. We wish him every success and much happiness at Rumson Country Day School and also hope that he remains a loyal Red Sox fan.

We now look forward to welcoming John Zurn to our St. Michael’s family and introducing him to the larger Newport community. We continue on our path of transition remembering to embrace change, as it is necessary for growth and opportunity.

The Mason House Improvement Project

Page 23: SMCDS Annual Report

232013-2014

The historic Mason House has been home to St. Michael’s Country Day School since 1943. Built in 1902 for sisters Ellen and Ida Mason, the home was designed by renowned architect, Irving Gill. The Mason House is one of three Irving Gill designed homes on Aquidneck Island but the only distinct Mission Revival style home with its stucco exterior, Spanish style roof, arched windows and ornamental ironwork. The interior of the home, with its original dark woodwork and distinctive Arts and Crafts fixtures is one of the earliest examples of Irving Gill’s signature architectural voice emerging.

St. Michael’s is now the steward of this architectural treasure and thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor and Stephen and Harriet DiCicco, we were able to completely restore the original library; repair and paint all the walls and trim in the main entrance, hallways and restrooms; replace the ceiling above the main stairwell; provide new classroom doors fitted with windows and locking hardware; refinish the main stairwell handrail and balusters; provide new electrical fixtures and outfit the hallway walls with cork display boards.

In a relatively short amount of time, the Mason House received a makeover that has dramatically improved its aesthetic appeal and functionality and has lifted the spirits of all who occupy its gentle embrace. We are grateful to those who contributed to the success of this project and hope all members of our school community feel proud of our Mason House home.

Nurturing Our Young EntrepreneursImagination. Passion. Opportunity.

“Almost every employer, in every occupation, prefers workers who know how to problem-solve, be creative, work collaboratively, and communicate well,” says Steven Paine, Ed.D., Educational Innovation Leader at BrightBytes.

Our third graders practiced all these skills this spring when they participated in a design workshop with Bobbi Jarvis, a freelance product designer and inventor for Hasbro, Fisher-Price, and Nike. She led the children through an eight-week design process to create a toddler’s push or pull toy based on a children’s book. At the conclusion of the workshop, our students presented 16 innovative prototypes, including stacking, nesting, noisy, and illuminated toys, to Bobbi, Brian Jarvis and Steve Linker of Hasbro, and Leslie Keohane.

Bobbi commented, “The kids’ ideas were as strong as those of high school students but with the charm and inhibition of a 9 year old. The students were wonderful, wacky and really great thinkers.” A third grader added, “The judges gave us great feedback. The process we used to design our toys is the same process we can use to create anything else we can imagine.”

292013-2014

Commencing the second year of its two-year term, the Executive Board welcomed Laura Dukat as the new treasurer, and she quickly established herself as the face of fiscal wellness, working tirelessly to ensure that the PA finances were always in order.

The first several months of the school’s transition year found Mary LoPresti called upon to serve as the parent representative to the Head of School Search Committee, redirecting her focus toward reviewing candidate files, participating in interviews in person and via Skype, and deliberating with the committee as a whole. As the voice of the parent community, Mary encouraged our families to participate in the open forums with the candidates to assess their qualifications and fit with our community. She is confident that John Zurn will support the PA’s continued mission to nurture a vibrant sense of community within our school and beyond the walls of Memorial Boulevard.

The fiscal year for the PA began on July 1, 2013, and the executive board met regularly throughout the summer. With the primary goal of bringing together new and returning families, the PA hosted Welcome Back Day with refreshments, essential information packets, spirit wear for sale, and a sampling of the hot lunch menu. On the second full weekend of September most of our families took advantage of the glorious late summer weather to enjoy Family Fall Frenzy, a complementary event complete with pony rides,

giant inflatables, a dunk tank with a continuous waiting line, and DJ music. Popcorn, apples, and ice cream from the ever-popular Brickley’s of Narragansett kept most of the children returning for seconds! Once again, spirit wear was available for sale for new students to stock up.

Let the fundraising begin! In early October the PA offered the chance to purchase candles, wrapping paper, and other assorted gift items prior to the holidays with the Yankee Candle Fundraiser and netted $1,083. Shortly thereafter, the Haunted Happenings Halloween Party, whose dual purpose was to fun-raise and fundraise, was held on a Saturday evening with games, music, a photo booth, a very lively DJ, and our second annual Cake Walk with a horribly creative cake decorating contest as its co-event. The $1,092 profit was added to our growing income. Once again, our parent and student volunteers joined forces to make all of our first-quarter events ones of which we could be proud!

November’s main event was the annual Thanksgiving Bake Sale, held on the Tuesday prior to the holiday. Thanks to delectable parent creations, we raised $587 and continued this tasty holiday tradition. Additional programs that ran concurrently were Box Tops for Education ($377), Stop & Shop’s Cash 4 Causes ($2,875), Stop & Shop A+ Program ($524) and Spirit Wear ($568), which all either met or modestly exceeded their goals.

(Parents Association Executive Board cont.)The blustery winter did not chill our spirits but was instead dedicated to hosting a Valentine’s Day Bake Sale, raising $410 that we proudly donated to the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Foundation and Child and Family Service’s Groovy Girls Program in memory of a parent volunteer who left us with a legacy of joy. In early March we continued the late-winter tradition of hosting the Family Skating Party at the St. George’s School ice rink, courtesy of the neighboring school. While we were delighted with the robust $4,081 we netted, we were even more gratified by the energy and enthusiasm displayed by our school community through our corps of volunteers, families in attendance, and creative twists on some old favorites, including the new “Spin to Win” game that guaranteed everyone to walk away a winner! The abundant and varied raffle theme baskets generated tremendous interest, especially the adventure basket that contained a Go Pro camera!

The Lunch Program, thanks to the daily parent volunteers who assisted with the cutting and serving of complementary fruit for all students, and Aquidneck Pizza, which supplied the meals, raised $7,040. International Lunch Week, offered one week each semester, was catered by Your Kitchen Companion, and raised an additional $1,165 toward our lunch program goal.

Wrapping up a full year that kept all members of the executive board working continuously, the long-awaited Neighborhoods of Newport House Tour, which had been in the planning phase since the fall, helped us to truly welcome spring with an ideal day for walking and viewing the seven spectacular homes that generously opened their doors for our visitors. The PA’s major fundraiser generated $31,596, of which $3,500 was shared with the Martin Luther King, Jr., Community Center. The PA and our school community were privileged to participate in this gesture of support and would like to openly express our heartfelt thanks to our co-chairs Roselle McConnell and Clare Craig for their commitment and energy.

The final full month of the academic year found our parent volunteers still eager to step forward to show their gratitude during Faculty and Staff Appreciation Week, which included a brunch, gourmet chocolate buffet, an abundance of fresh spring flowers, a day of chair massages, a catered luncheon, and Barnes & Noble gift cards.

The PA provided a representative to the Whitney Slade Sendoff Celebration Committee that planned the Toasts and Roasts evening of fun under the tent and in the Hill House to honor our former Head of School at the end of May. Those in attendance were treated to music supplied by Art Manchester and a fabulously talented group of alumni musicians. Many guests were amazed at the transformation of the Hill House for this unique occasion!

Additional final expenses for the year included funding the colorful and splashy Arts Fest t-shirts worn by our students, faculty, and administrators ($2,833) and the tasty frozen treats from Pete’s Ice Cream Truck ($289) as part of the St. Michael’s Day festivities. The total paid from the 2012-2013 Teacher Wish List was $11,057, with newly acquired items that included a tricycle for The Cottage, Apple TV’s for several classrooms, and new lacrosse nets for the physical education program, among others.

The outgoing board is indebted to those parents who have consistently availed themselves of the opportunities to share their time, talent, and treasure with the desire to make St. Michael’s a truly great school! We also appreciate the gestures of support to our community partners such as Child & Family Service and the MLK Center. It has been our honor and pleasure to serve in this capacity!

We are delighted to introduce the newly initiated PA Executive Board for 2014-2015, made up of President Sheila Powell, Vice President Amy Gallagher, Treasurer Laura Dukat, Secretary Catie Benzak, and Lunch Coordinators Patricia Carrellas and Stephan Boneu! Laura, Pat, and

Page 31: SMCDS Annual Report

312013-2014

Stephan have very graciously offered to serve a bit longer to assist with the transition for the new board. The board will inherit a healthy ending balance of $63,726, a portion of which will be placed in reserve for the lunch program expenses,

Annual Report of Donors 2013-14 ~ Thank you!We thank the generous donors listed below who supported our school with gifts to the Annual Fund, a special project, the endowment, and/or a scholarship fund, between July 1, 2013 and June 30, 2014.

Donors contributed over $329,000 in support of our school, including $194,415 to the unrestricted Annual Fund, and $25,173 toward the establishment of the new Whitney C. Slade Scholarship.

Thanks to the generosity and vision of an anonymous donor and Stephen & Harriet DiCicco, we were able to complete a restoration of the Mason House library and the common areas on the first and second floors. This grand building now more truly reflects the distinguished history of our school.

We surpassed NAIS medians for Annual Fund participation at K-12 independent day schools in 4 out of 5 constituent categories. Notably, alumni/ae annual giving has reached its highest level in recent years. Our full-time faculty and staff achieved 100% participation for the third year in a row, and grandparents remain one of our most loyal donor groups.

Our donors enable St. Michael’s Country Day School to maintain the highest standard of excellence in education. Thank you.

The Legacy of Excellence Society at St. Michael’s Country Day School

The Legacy of Excellence Society honors those supporters who have designated a portion of their assets in their will or through their estate planning to benefit St. Michael’s Country Day School. Gifts from bequests and trusts ensure the future of our remarkable school, support our mission, and help establish a lasting legacy of excellence at SMS for today’s students and for generations to come. Individuals who include the school in their estate plans become members of the St. Michael’s Legacy of Excellence Society. All names are recognized in our Annual Report and by a special luncheon with our Head of School and Board Chair.

Your bequest can be a specific dollar amount or a certain percentage of the balance remaining in your estate or trust after paying all debts, costs and other prior legacies. Whichever form you prefer, you can direct that your bequest be unrestricted for the general support of our mission or for a specific purpose you designate (be sure to check with us to make sure your gift can be used as intended). Your assets remain in your control during your lifetime. You can modify your gift to address changing circumstances. The Legacy of Excellence Society is open to anyone to join and gifts of all sizes are accepted.

Whatever your objectives, we will be happy to work with you in planning a bequest that will be satisfying, economical and effective in carrying out your wishes. Please contact us so that we can assist you through every step of the process or if you have already included St. Michael’s in your estate planning. We would like to add your name to our roster of distinguished legacy supporters.

Please contact Leslie Grosvenor in the Development Office at 401-849-5970 or [email protected] for further information.

Good-byes

RebeccaBertaBecky Berta (aka: BB or, simply, Berta) is a Master Multitasker. As Director of Community Relations, Becky filled a variety of roles that continued to evolve during her three years as a member of our Admin

team. Her plate was more than full at SMS.

She was the smiling face at the Front Desk and the competent voice answering the phone. She was the afternoon pickup/ESD scribe, deliverer of late arriving lunches and forgotten home work, photographer, keeper of the school photo library, author of our Facebook page posts and school news stories on the web, advertising coordinator, press release writer, Blood Drive organizer, coach, and so much more. Essentially, she was the go-to person for the answers to a million questions, including the one most often posed: “Have you seen Whitney? Do you know where he is?”

Personally, Becky was a valued co-worker, sounding board, and friend. I had the pleasure of working with her on many projects and always found her to be professional, upbeat, and reliable. Becky followed through just as sure as the sun would rise in the morning. She was grace under fire.

~ Leslie Grosvenor, Director of Institutional Advancement

SamanthaBradshawSam Bradshaw was our Swiss Army knife. Sam raised the art of versatility to new heights at 180 Rhode Island Avenue. She was able to adapt to environments in both the lower and middle schools and bring her resourceful

skill set to each position and curriculum area. She didn’t stop there, either. In perhaps her most valuable role, Sam served as our Director of Student Services for five years where she became a vital guiding resource for students, teachers, and parents in both school divisions. It would be a major understatement to say that Sam was missed in that position when she returned to the classroom these last two years.

The record will read that Sam Bradshaw’s teaching of history at St. Michael’s spanned eighteen years, but Sam’s roots go back much farther to a time before Mason was Mason, before there was a VBB or a Hill House, before arts programs and festivals. Sam’s “Academy” origins trace to a simpler time when the driveway was a dirt path, 125 students fit in one building, and a seventh grade girl sat in the classroom of a young math teacher launching his St. Michael’s career. As I reflect back from a great distance upon that time with Sammie McIntyre Bradshaw, I swear it seems like only yesterday.

~ Bob Tavares, Head of the Middle School/Mathematics

Sally CaseySally Casey is a consummate professional. You could describe her as organized, strategic, and collegial. During Sally’s six years in our admission office she established a warm and

welcoming environment. Sally knew she had sealed the deal with a prospective parent when the meeting was concluded with a hug. The hug was a sign that our school was a good fit for the family. Another hallmark of Sally’s tenure was the marathon tour. Families often had to be rescued as the walkabout seemed to go on forever. Sally took great pride in her role and her school. Her legacy will be that St. Michael’s became a more accessible place. She championed our role as a contributing community member realizing that the walls surrounding our school needed to become permeable rather than impermeable.

~ Whitney C. Slade, Head of School

TimMcMahonTim McMahon’s time came and went in a heartbeat, it seems. After spending 4 years teaching in Munich, 3 in Bangladesh, 2 in Ottawa, 4 in Alexandria, Virginia, and 2 in Bulgaria, Tim can now

tack on 5 years spent at our cozy, little academy to his resume. You may not know that Tim speaks 5 foreign languages: Bulgarian, Russian, French, Italian, and German. As Ken Hileman noted in his humorous farewell salute to Tim at our luncheon, unfortunately, he never learned “Rhode Island.” The purveyor of a dynamic, interactive curriculum replete with field trips, movies, videos, cutting-edge technology, guest speakers, debates, and spring festivals, Tim’s riveting programs always placed the students in the center of the action. Tim never made himself the focus. He was the ultimate adventurer, refusing to play it safe in the traditional classroom sense. Our students consistently reaped the benefits of his vibrant approach to facing history. To paraphrase a quote from Sheryl Sandberg, Chief Operating Officer at Facebook, “If you’re offered a seat in a Tim McMahon history class, don’t ask what seat, just sit down.” With a nod to Kevin Arnold of Wonder Years fame I’d add, “Five years, and the thing is, after these five years, I look back in wonder” at the man who made Room 7 on Level II the place where knowledge was king and every student voice could be heard. Tim McMahon was our Renaissance man.

Lynne VietriLynne Vietri believes it’s really all about the children. Whether tying a shoe, imparting a word of wisdom, settling a dispute about whose dinosaur it is, or reminding everyone to treat each other with

kindness and respect, Lynne always directed her full attention to the kids at Extended School Day (ESD). Our youngest students pleaded with their parents to let them stay with her after school; our graduating 8th graders and alumni often reminisce about their special afternoons with Mrs. Vietri.

Lynne took pride in creating a comforting and caring after school program. Delicious aromas of baking cinnamon buns and freshly popped popcorn drew admirers from all corners of the campus. ESD rooms often overflowed with happy noise from fun and creative activities. Other times, she provided a quiet space for a child to relax with a picture book or art supplies. Lynne always seemed to know what a child needed most.

For over 25 years in our St. Michael’s community, Lynne has spread her message of joy, warmth, and inclusion. Thank you, Mrs. Vietri. You made sure that every child entrusted to your care at ESD felt special.

~ Gail Ruggieri, former Lower School teacher

Joann WeinerJoann Weiner came to us by way of St. Andrew’s School in Barrington where she taught fifth grade for five years. We needed a warm, nurturing and experienced teacher in the fourth grade while

Mrs. Hyland took a year off after the birth of her son. Joann fit the bill.

She came to us with a great knowledge of Responsive Classroom and ways to differentiate instruction. In her brief time at St. Michael’s, she made wonderful connections with her students, colleagues, and parents. She is a very hard worker who was often here after school preparing for the next day’s lessons. Her dedication and willingness to learn and grow are noteworthy. Joann was only with us for one year, but she has certainly left her mark at St. Michael’s. We will miss her and wish her all the best as she moves on to her next home. Joann will always be a member of our St. Michael’s family.

You may wonder how your child will benefit when you make a charitable gift to St. Michael’s. Our school is well known for academic excellence and a warm, nurturing atmosphere. Both are supported not only by your tuition dollars but also by many charitable contributions from our families and friends. Our small classes, talented teachers, reading and math resources, cutting edge technology, and many exceptional offerings in the arts and athletics are all enhanced by contributions from donors like you.

Your gift to the Annual Fund - the school’s most important fundraising priority each year - is necessary because tuition alone does not cover the cost of educating your child. In fact, tuition covers approximately 80% of the cost at most private day schools. That’s why independent schools need endowments, supplementary revenue from activities such as summer camps, and, yes, fundraising. Since our school is a relatively small community, as compared to a university or hospital, we have many fewer supporters. Several families make our school their philanthropic priority for just this reason. The Annual Fund, capital campaigns for special projects, endowment funds in support of the facility, financial aid and the faculty, gifts of securities, planned giving in the form of bequests etc., gifts of real estate, and gifts in kind are just some of the ways you can help advance the mission of St. Michael’s.

and Annual Giving took over paying the bills.
