1. Outline of Water Tank Construction
Water and air are indispensable to human life. This manual details the process of assembling a tank
that stores this valuable resource. The most important issue in assembling or installing a water
tank is the prevention of water leakage in the completed tank. Precisely following the directions in
this manual at the time of assembly and construction of the tank will ensure a leak-proof tank.
Please observe the following during the tank assembly process.
1) As the tank stores drinking water, ensure a clean workspace and assembly process.
2) This water tank is very durable under normal conditions; be familiar with this manual to ensure a
perfect assembly process.
3) Handle the various parts carefully so as not to damage the surface.
4) Assemblers must observe safety rules at all times during the assembly process.
2. Safety Rules for the Assembler
While working with and installing the SMC Water Tank of Doha Industry Co., Ltd., the following
regulations must be observed to ensure the safety and sanitation. The assembler must follow these
regulations and the owner of the construction is responsible for them.
1) All workers must absolutely wear safety shoes and hard hats during the process.
2) All workers must wear shirts that button at the sleeves and clean working clothes.
3) When climbing on the inside or on the ceiling panel, wear non-slip, clean sports shoes (without
dust or other foreign substances).
4) In order to prevent safety accidents, parts weighing 25Kg or more must be team lifted.
5) When a task is being performed by two workers or more, a signal must be used.
6) When a task is being performed in a high area, use scaffolding with safety equipment to prevent
people or items from slipping or falling.
7) Check the safety condition of the work place and bottom of slab, and remove any potential hazards
in advance.
8) When using a rope to hoist panels or parts of the tank to a high area, the higher worker must
wear a safety belt, and the worker below must stand clear.
9) When working on the ceiling of the tank, use extreme caution to not slip or fall.
10) Do not come in contact with the cable or iron bar at the construction site (danger of electric
shock); removal must be done by the site engineer of the construction owner.
11) When using electric tools, do a prior check for electrical leaks such as power, outlet, plug,
transformer, etc.
12) Working on a wet surface or on a rainy day creates a dangerous condition for risk of electric
shock. Do not work under these conditions.
13) To protect eyes from the strong sunlight during outdoor work, wear light-colored sunglasses.
- 4 -
14) Do not smoke inside the tank. Smoking must be done in a designated area.
15) Inflammables must not be stored inside the tank, but in an isolated warehouse, and checked
regularly.
16) When working on the rooftop of a high building, keep in mind that wind speed is faster than on
the ground surface, and be extremely careful that panels do not fly off, causing damage to materials
or people.
17) When partial lighting is needed in the work place, use a flashlight or a working lamp; do not
use inflammables that use a flame as a light source.
18) Lodging is not permitted in the materials warehouse. If the site requires guarding, after
getting approval from the site manager, an independent, temporary building separately located from
the materials warehouse should be built for lodging.
※Note: While handling the panels such as bringing in, carrying, and assembling, if the surface is
scratched or the corners are cut, it may cause water leakage. Handle the panels with the utmost care,
and become familiar with the causes of leakage, in order to thoroughly observe any leaks during
construction.
3. Responsibility and Duty of Supervisor
1. The supervisor must verify that construction is being done in accordance with this manual.
2. The supervisor is responsible for periodically checking the safety of construction, and have
workers repeat “the Outline of Water Tank Construction” and “the Safety Rules” prior to work
every day.
3. The construction of a water tank differs from other construction methods; once assembly has been
done in accordance with the order, partial assembly becomes impossible. The supervisor must verify
that construction is being done correctly at every stage of assembly.
4. If a defect is found in any part during construction, stop work and report to the technical
department of the factory to receive direction. The supervisor is responsible for supervising
whether other defect-free parts are being used. Do not conduct arbitrarily without permission.
5. Once construction is completed, fill the tank with water. The owner, constructor and supervisor
must conduct jointly a test for leakage, receive confirmation and report to the related department.
4. Construction Preparation and Pre-check Issues
Before using the water tank, in order to enhance effectiveness of assembly on site and the quality
of the tank, it is essential to establish an efficient and economical assembly schedule by a pre-
survey of installing position.
Although sites will vary, the following must be checked.
- 5 -
(1) Check and plan for which route and gate the SMC PANEL and various other materials will be
carried through and what kind of equipment will be used to convey them to the installation site.
(2) If the tank will be installed on the rooftop of a building or an elevated site, plan the safety
of the equipment with all workers being aware of the direction and speed of wind.
(3) Create a power supply plan by receiving approval for the power source.
(4) Check the foundation and the work space.
5. Acceptance, Handling and Storage of Material
5-1 Acceptance of Material (SMC PANEL and Subsidiary Material)
Once the water tank materials arrive at the construction site or the agency, the person responsible
must receive the packing list or invoice and immediately verify all materials have been received.
If there is any discrepancy between the packing list and the materials received, file a report with
the forwarding department of the factory within 24 hours.
5-2 Handling and Storage of Material
(1) When unloading heavy materials, use a forklift and handle carefully to avoid impact or damage.
Be particularly careful that the corners of panels are not damaged. (Damaged corners are a potential
leak site).
(2) When loading SMC panels, load the panels of the same type straightly to avoid deformity or
damage.
(3) Materials must be stored in a separate warehouse to avoid the risk of theft; the sealing tape in
particular must be stored in a dry place.

7. What to know before Starting Construction
1. The surface at which each panel comes into contact with the other and the surface at which the
corner frame is assembled must be attached length-wise with sealing tape.
2. Surfaces on which the sealing tape is to be applied must be thoroughly cleaned without any
foreign matter or debris.
(Do not use a cloth that has been saturated with
either oil or water)
3. Joins and ends of sealing tape must overlap by at
least 50mm.
4. The protective paper on the sealing tape must be
removed prior to assembling the flange section
of the panel.
5. When fastening bolts, use a washer. Do not fasten with only a nut.
6. When fastening bolts, fix the head and fasten the nut.
7. If the bolt holes in various panels and parts do not connect properly, do not force. Forcing may
cause water leakage.
8. Do not strike the panels with a metal tool.
9. The inner surfaces of the crossing panels
must not be assembled unevenly.
10. Bolt fastenings bolt must be, in general,
turn 3~5 times alternately following the order
of the figure shown. The order of assembly must
start with the first bolt. (Fastening bolts all
at once may cause cracking, one cause of water
leakage.)
11. All holes for assembling the piping material
and parts must be made prior to assembling the
panel.
12. As the panel grade differs according to
height, verify the grade indicated at the panel
flange section, and apply following the
Attachment 1, 2. If it is applied incorrectly, the
tank may break due to water pressure.

1. Confirm Foundation
1. An adequate foundation is the responsibility of the building owner.
2. Once the capacity of the water tank is decided, provide the owner with the specifications
(drawing) for a concrete foundation corresponding to the tank capacity (tonnage). The owner is
responsible for constructing a foundation in accordance with the specifications (considering the
ground strength of the installation site) as drawn up by an architectural design office.
3. Prior to installing the t, confirm the foundation construction and establish an installation plan.
4. Anchor Bolts must be thoroughly fixed by the constructor.
5. The maximum gap of the foundation construction must be within 1m; The base frame (Channel) joint
section must be safely set on the base pad.
Base Frame ℓW
H
W = 400
l = Within 1000mm
H = A min. space of 600mm is needed (including base frame)
※ Upper surface of base pad must ensure a smoothness of 1/500mm or less.
6. In order to ensure adequate work space during tank installation and for maintenance after
installation, at least 600mm is needed as in Fig, 1-b. The width of the base pad must be 300mm or
wider.
The upper surface of base pad must be kept horizontal.

1-3. Assembly Process
1. Arrange the parts of foundation frame in order.
(The bolt hole located on the inner side of panel should be on
the top, as shown in the reference diagram.)
2. Other attached parts, bolts and nuts, also, should be in order.
3. Roughly assemble them with hands, without using tools.
(The length of diagonal line L1 should be equal with that of L2.)
4. Assemble the bolt while checking the length of diagonal line
(L1=L2) with a tape measure. The bolt used for the assembly of outer
outer frame needs to remain as roughly assembled
5. After putting together the bolts, adjust the frame to the horizon
referring to the following adjustment method.
6. Attach the anchor bracket corresponding to the location of anchor
bolt (Detail D).
7. Keep the foundation frame assembly as level as possible (the level difference should be less

Laser level equalizer is one of the most convenient and accurate tools, but if you have no such
equipment, use a transparent hose as follows (the optimal diameter of the hose is about 10mm).
1) The setting of the reference point: Set two parallel corners first, like A and B or A and C.
Carefully consider that the reference point should be higher than any other connected point.
2) Based on this basic point, adjust the level of two other corners.
3) After leveling the outer frame, adjust the level of point G and H.
- All outer connected points are leveled first, and then the level of inner frame can be adjusted.
4) After tying a thread at point K and L, parallel the frame with the thread by putting the pre-described
steel plate under the bottom of the frame.
5) Other frames (including frame M-N, E-I-F) can be leveled by following the measure described in
number 4.
6) If you complete the leveling process to the final frame, check all the level again.
★ This process should be carried out very carefully, because it determines the life
span and construction quality of the whole tank.

4. Sealing Tape Adhesion
4-1. Precautions for Adhering Sealing Tape
1. Clean the panel to be adhered; pay close attention to cleaning the surface to be adhered.
2. Do not use oily or waxed cloth.
3. Make sure the surface is completely dry before adhering.
4. Clean the Bolt Hole and ensure it is free of any dirt or debris.
5. Remove the protective paper from the Sealing Tape just prior to assembling.
4-2. How to adhere the Sealing Tape
1. Adhere the Sealing Tape to the entire surface area to be assembled.
2. The position on which the Sealing Tape is to be adhered is as the following figure.
3. The end section to which the Sealing Tape was adhered must overlap by 50mm.(see figure)
4. Connecting sections of the Sealing Tape must overlap by 50mm.
4-3. Sections on which Sealing Tape is used
1. Bolt-assembly surface of various SMC Panels
(Panel-assembly surfaces as in Fig. 4-a~d)
2. Surfaces joining the SMC Panel of a Corner Frame
(See Fig. 4-e)
3. Regarding the section that joins the corner frame, first adhere tape by completely wrapping each

3. Divide and assemble the large tank as in A, B, and C of Fig. 5-d, and put on the base frame.
Assemble the border surface of A, B, and C under the bottom pane.
The assembly and upside-down placement of too many panels at once will create a hazard and the
assembled panels will also be unsafe. The number of panels must be 4 or less per worker after
considering the number of workers.
.
5-2. Precautions for Assembling the Bottom Panels
1. The crossing section of a panel must be a plane surface without any differences at the 4 ends of
the Panel Flange (Fig. 5-f); the order of bolt fastening must be Fig. 5-e.
2. Bolts must not be fastened completely at once but rather slowly in two stages, and the order of
fastening is as Fig. 5-e.
3. Fastening bolt all at once can cause cracking, which in turn may cause leaks when the tank is
filled fully with water.
4. An overlapping of Sealing Tape must be positioned at the cross section.
5. If the bolt hole is not fitted properly, adjust with a ratchet as in Fig. 5-g, and fasten as in
Fig. 5-f. (Plane of Flange must be adjusted with a ratchet.)
6. Check the position on which the drain panel will be assembled among the bottom panels in
advance; be aware that the assembly must be done in the correct position.
6. Side Panel Temporary Assembly
6-1.Assembly of Side Panel
1. Remove the protective paper from the Sealing Tape.
2. Check the position of the bolt holes on the side panel and the grade (thickness) of panels of
each position, and assemble the panels.
4. Assemble each panel and the flange-stiffening bar simultaneously.
5. Do not fasten the bolts completely, but fasten the nuts as weakly as just no moving.
6. Do not assemble the side panels completely, but assemble them in a‘ㄷ’ shape as in Fig. 6-c and
insert the inner STAY and Bracket (STS), finally assembling the remaining wall panels.
7. Check the position of the fitting to be mounted to the side down panel, and assemble the panel
- 17 -
for fitting (0.5*1.0) in the right position.
(2.5Mh-5Mh)
8. When bolting the side panel, disregard any differences at the end of the flange, but bolt the
plane surface of the inside so as to be horizontal. (Fig. 6-a)
(May cause leaks)
7. Processing the Assembly Hole of Each Panel
7-1. Need for Hole Processing
1) Hole processing for assembling a cross-stiffening panel when assembling the side panel (See the

7-2. How to process a hole
1) Draw a center “+”line at the bracket using a tool.
2) Mark the position of the hole by coinciding the cross lines of the side panels with a tool (WBR-
1717S).
3) Make a hole using a 15 drill Φ (M14).
4) As the position and gap of the cross hole determines the straightness of the rubber cap bolt to be
assembled here, a great amount of care must be taken to ensure proper assembly. (If the position and
gap of the cross hole does not fit, it may cause water leaks at the rubber cap bolt.)

1. General precautions for assembly are same as for the bottom pane.
2. When assembling the panels upside down, be careful that the surface is not damaged; when
installing on-site, make sure the panel will not be caught by the wind.
3. Assemble the ventilator prior to assembling the panel.
4. Regularly install one ventilator for every 30 panels dividing the ceiling panel into the same
area to facilitate air ventilation inside tank.
(Disproportionate installation will cause inadequate ventilation.)
5. The position of the ceiling support should follow the guidelines as presented in accordance with
the TANK Size.

11-1.Order of Assembly of Bolt & Washer Nut
The panels or interior stiffening element have not
been completely fastened yet. From now on, the
bolts must be completely fastened. Fastening
without following the prescribed order may cause a
crack which in turn will cause leaks. Carefully
observe the following order.
1. Assemble first the cross part Ⓐ of panels. At
this time, one worker must enter inside and
assemble the bolt in tandem with the outside worker.
2. Fasten Ⓑ part and assemble Ⓒ part.
3. The number of completely assembled bolts for
parts Ⓐ Ⓑ Ⓒmust be 2 pieces for each.
4. After the assembly of sections Ⓐ Ⓑ Ⓒis finished, assemble A→C,
A→B, A→A, and the remaining 3 sides must be assembled using the
same method.
5. When assembling the above side panel, observe Items 9 and 10 of
“What to Know before Assembly”
6. When assembly of the flange section of the side panel is finished,
assemble the side panel and the bottom panel.
Bolt the“T" part carefully: the additional use of 10cm of sealing
tape is effective in blocking any water leakage.
7. Then, complete the fastening of the bolts at the side panel
and ceiling panel following the same method as the bottom
panel.
8. The last assembly is the corner frame and side panel of the
corner section. As seen in Fig. 58, assemble equally both sides

15. Watertight Test
15-1. How to do watertight test
1. In case the piping work is done by the building
facility side, close the Drain Valve and the Outlet
Valve, and fill with water.
2. At this time, fill the water level of tank to
250~300mm from the ceiling flange surface as in
the Figure.
3. Wipe clean the outside of the tank to ensure
there is no trace of wetness.
4. Carefully survey the flange, panel surface, bottom
surface, and corner.
5. Fill fully with water; the leakage test must be done during the day in full sun.
Avoid rainy or snowy days for testing.
6. In a basement or a building, lighting will be needed to see any water leaks.
7. Mark any leaking areas with a red pencil, determine the cause of the leak and take the
appropriate action.
15-2. Action for Water Leakage
1. If there is a leak, determine the cause, and take one of the following actions
Cause Action to be taken Remark
1. Poor
fastening of
Bolt, Nut
1. Check the fastening status of nut at the leaking section,
fasten completely with a ratchet.
2. If a weak bolt has been broken during assembly by the
fastening nut, it may cause leakage; change the bolt.
See Fig. 16-b
2. Entry of
foreign matter
into Sealing
part
1. Bolting where the washer or foreign matter enters the gap
of the flange sealing tape may cause leakage. If water is
leaking extensively, dismantling and reassembly will be
necessary.
2. If for minor leaks, treat with silicon caulk.
Silicon must be applied when the tank is completely dry.
When working with
silicon, curing time
is needed; fill water
after 24 hours of
curing.
3. Leakage at
crack of Panel
and Pin Hole
