Refrigerants Inc. & Smartcool

• Smartcool is a global clean technology company helping some of the world’s largest organizations enhance their profitability, while lowering their carbon footprint.

• Smartcool delivers cutting edge energy efficiency and cost reduction solutions for customers around the world.

• Smartcool’s technology reduces the electricity usage (kWh) and demand (KW) of air conditioning, refrigeration and heat pump systems by improving compressor efficiency.

• Refrigerants Inc. has been Premier Regional Distributor of the Smartcool ECO3 since 2014.

• ECO3s have been successfully deployed on a large number of Refrigerants Inc. projects across the country.

• In that time the Smartcool ECO3 has grown to become an important part of the RI Green Products catalog of energy conservation measures and has augmented the value of the Refrigerants Inc. solution.

• The Refrigerants Inc. team provides superb sales and technical support for the ECO3 with backup support available from Smartcool.

ECO3 ApplicationsThe ECO3 can be installed on any air conditioning, refrigeration or heat pump system with one or two stages of control.

These compressors are controlled by the ECO3 , which is wired in directly downstream of the controller output for the compressor.

During a save period, the ECO3 either turns off the compressor(s) or delays them from starting, in order to shed compressor capacity and save energy.

Greater energy efficiency is achieved without impacting temperature or humidity in the conditioned space.

Installation

• Typical electrician’s tool kit• 24 VAC Power Supply (can be 24 VDC)• Fuse (24V/1A) between supply and ECO3

• In-Line fuse per channel: 240V/5A • The ECO3 unit (with user manual, back

plate and quick reference sticker)• An enclosure may be necessary for an

outside installation

Installing the ECO3 typically takes about one hour for a certified installer with no interruption to business operation.

The Operation of Conventional Cooling Systems• When there is a call for air

conditioning (A/C) or refrigeration, the thermostat simply switches the compressor on to run continuously until the temperature set point is reached. There is no energy management working on system performance.

• When the A/C starts, suction pressure is high, head pressure is low, the evaporator is warm, and the condenser is cold. These are ideal conditions for the compressor to efficiently pump large volumes of cooling refrigerant. Initially, cooling performance is up to 50% above rated system capacity. After a short period, conditions reverse and cooling capacity declines to minimum rated value.

Page 8: Smartcool ECO3 Presentation - Refrigerants Inc - BOMA Denver - May 14 2015

Smartcool Solution to Enhance Cooling System Performance

What It Does•The A/C starts with a thermostat call, but instead of the inefficiency of a conventional cooling cycle, Smartcool software and microprocessor continuously monitors and evaluates real-time demand trends. Then, employing sophisticated energy management strategies, the cooling system is cycled, within manufacturer specifications, to maintain near maximum capacity. Performance is maintained up to a 50% increase over rated capacity typically resulting in 10-20% and up to 30% reduced system run-time, all the while maintaining temperature requirements.

How It Does It•Smartcool does not allow system performance to erode to rated capacity. Before that can occur, Smartcool, using its predictive algorithms, shuts off and “rests” the compressor for typically 6 to 12 minutes each control period. Upon each restart, the cooling system naturally resumes high capacity mode until the thermostat is satisfied.

Savings Calculations

• Savings percentage achieved can be calculated using information available on the ECO3 display screen. Number of save hours as a percentage of total hours indicates savings:

Save Hours ÷ (Run Hours + Save Hours + Automatic Override Hours)

• Unit load factors can be calculated using information available on the ECO3 display screen and the total logging period hours:

(Run Hours + Save Hours + Manual Bypass Hours + Automatic Override Hours) ÷ Elapsed Time

• Seasonal Adjustment Factor can be calculated using historical cooling degree day (CDD) & heating degree day (HDD) data for the test location. The annual savings calculations for A/C can be seasonally adjusted by multiplying the savings percentage (calculated above) by the historical A/C load factor for the test period divided by the historical avg. annual load factor for the test location:

Historical Load Factor for test period / Historical Avg. Annual Load Factor for test location

• Annual kWh savings can be calculated by multiplying the savings percentage (calculated above) times the rated kW consumption (collected in site survey) of the compressor times unit load factor (calculated above) times seasonal adjustment factor (calculated above):

Savings Percentage * Compressor Rated KW * Unit Load Factor * Seasonal Adjustment

Page 17: Smartcool ECO3 Presentation - Refrigerants Inc - BOMA Denver - May 14 2015

• Savings can be shown by entering screen data into on-line savings calculator http://www.smartcooleco3.com/the-eco3/savings-calculator with your smart phone (via QR code)

• There is also a ‘how to’ video.
