Figurative Language

0Figurative language is creative language that is used to create an effect or a feeling. It is not always meant to be taken literally, but it is used to make our writing more engaging or creative. 

Simile

0Simile: a simile is a comparison of two unlike things using either the word “like” or the word “as” 

Example:  I am as quick as a cricket. He's as sly as a fox.

Metaphor

0 Metaphor: a metaphor is a comparison like a simile, but it doesn't use the words like or as.  Often poetry has extended metaphors, which is when an entire poem compares something to something else, such as comparing a journey to life.

Examples: 0 She was a breath of fresh air in

the classroom.0  John is a beast when it comes to

football.

Hyperbole

0Hyperbole: An exaggeration that creates a comic effect.

Examples: 0The limousine is as long

as a football field.  0There were a billion

people at the concert.

Personification

0Personification: gives human-like characteristics to objects or animals.

0Examples: 0The ocean danced in the

moonlight.0The blizzard swallowed

the town.

Alliteration

0Alliteration: occurs when a series of words in a row (or close to a row) have the same first consonant sound

0Examples:0Mike’s microphone

made much music.0Sara’s seven sisters slept

soundly in sand.

Allusion

0Allusion: A reference to something or someone, usually a literary character.

Example:  0Mr. Jones got the

neighborhood kids to do his yard work- just as Tom Sawyer got the kids to paint the fence

Onomatopoeia

0Onomatopoeia: when a word’s pronunciation imitates its sound. (Think of comic books: Boom!, Splat! Pop! These are all sounds.)

Examples: 0The race car zoomed past

the finish line. 0The dishes fell to the floor

with a clatter

0 Say:  The author is using a simile.0Mean: The simile is comparing the way the woman

moves across the room to a cool summer breeze.  This means that the woman moves "care free" and gently across the room.

0Matter: This piece of figurative language is important because it helps to illustrate how the woman moved across the room  It also helps to create imagery.
