• SMART Notebook is Smart’s interactive whiteboard software.

• Notebook software is similar to a paper notebook. You can use it to immediately capture notes and drawings.

• It has an advantage over a paper notebook because images and Macromedia flash file can be easily inserted in to a notebook file.

• You can use it in the classroom to create engaging and interactive lesson activities.

• To launch Notebook software, double-click the SMART Notebook icon on the desktop.

• You could also launch the software clicking on the start menu, then all programs, then SMART Board Software, and then Notebook Software.

• When you open notebook the first time you will see a Welcome notebook screen.

• This screen can be turned off by un-checking the box in the bottom left hand corner.

• When you click New Notebook File, a new file will open.

• Each new SMART Notebook file contains a work area that can be filled with objects.

• The work area is similar to a paper notebook.

• You can use it to – capture notes and drawings and– insert images and flash files– You can also add as many pages as you

need to capture or display information.

• The menu bar in SMART Notebook is similar to the SMART Notebook software toolbar.

• They both provide access to many of the same features:– File– Edit– View– Insert– Format– Draw and – Help

• The SMART notebook software toolbar provides access to many tools to help you work with your notebook file.

• The toolbar always appears at the top of the notebook page but it can be moved.

• To do this, click the double-ended, vertical arrow on the far right of the toolbar.

• Other toolbar buttons offer more options for creating Smart notebook objects.– Pen tool– Line tool– Shape tool– Creative pen tool– Text tool– Eraser tool

• There are four tabs on the side of the notebook interface.

• They are located on the right hand side of the work area but can be moved to the left hand side.

• To do this you click the double ended horizontal arrow.

• You can also hide the side tabs from view when you have finished working with them by selecting the auto-hide check box.

• Each side tab plays a special role in how you create your presentation.

• Let’s look at the page sorter tab first.

• Click the Page sorter tab to see thumbnail images of all the pages in the SMART notebook file.

• You can add blank pages to the file 3 different ways– Use the insert drop down menu– Use the Notebook toolbar button or– Use The button on the side tab

• Write numbers on each new page

• You can navigate through the pages by – using the arrow buttons on the notebook toolbar – clicking a page in the page sorter tab – or using the page back/ ahead icons in the page

sorter

• The active page is indicated by a second border around the thumbnail that contains a drop down menu.

• To change the page order, drag and drop the thumbnail of the page to its new location.

• When you change the order, the numbers change automatically.

• Clicking the drop down menu on the active page presents you with 8 options. – Delete page– Clear page– Insert blank page– Clone page– Rename page– Screen shade

• You can also resize the page sorter tab by clicking and dragging the double ended arrow.

• When the auto hide feature is activated the page sorter goes out of view when you click inside the work area.

• This makes the viewable work area larger.• The auto hide box must be checked to

enable this feature.• If the auto hide box is left unchecked the

page sorter will remain in view.

• Let’s review some key points.

• There are three ways to create pages– Use the insert drop down menu– Use the Notebook toolbar button or– Use The button on the side tab

• There are 3 ways to navigate pages – using the arrow buttons on the notebook

toolbar – clicking a page in the page sorter tab – or using the page back/ ahead icons in the

page sorter

• You can modify the active page using the options in the drop down menu.

• Here are some examples of

– Writing– Text– Pictures– Shapes and Lines

All of these items are objects

• The Notebook software gallery is a collection of resources filled with many different types of objects.

• You can increase the visible gallery area by using the resize handle.

• You can also launch the onscreen keyboard by clicking the icon to the left of the search field.

• The gallery contains thousands of – images– pages – videos– flash files – and SMART Notebook files.

• You can use these objects to give visual context to your presentations.

• Everything in the gallery is organized into searchable collections.

• There are two ways to find content in the gallery.

• There is a search field at the top that allows you to search by using keywords, like you would if you were using an internet search engine.– Click inside the search field– Type a keyword (animals)– Click the search button to display your results.– Select the thumbnail you want to use and drag it in to

the work area.

• Another way to search the gallery is to browse the collections by selecting a folder.

•The gallery also contains pages. •You can recognize a page in the gallery by the folded top-right corner. •Pages in the gallery are not like other objects. •To insert a page, drag the thumbnail from the gallery to the work area.•This will create a page with a background that cannot be moved.

• You cannot select or unlock the page background image.

• The only way to remove a page or background is to delete the page.

• If you press the page sorter tab you will notice that the new page was inserted directly after the last active notebook page.

• Objects can be moved from page to page by dragging and dropping to any other page in the sorter.

• Let’s return to the gallery and take a closer look at the different headings.

• One of the headings in the Gallery’s display area is interactive and Multimedia.

• This area contains – Flash video files– Flash created objects and– Objects with attached audio

• Items from this folder are used to add rich media content to a lesson.

• Flash files have the flash icon on the top left corner of the thumbnail image.

• Video files have a filmstrip border around the thumbnail image.

• Sound files have a speaker icon in the bottom left corner of the thumbnail image.

• To insert a flash, video, or sound file, drag the thumbnail from the gallery into the work area.

• After you insert a flash file just follow the on screen instructions to interact with it.

• To display a video use the toolbar buttons to play, pause, stop and so on.

• You can add sound to an object by– Inserting an object into the work area– Select the object– Use the drop down object menu and select

sound– Browse to find a sound file and select it. – Click ok in the dialog box.– Click the icon in the corner to play the sound.

• The My Content Area is a special gallery collection reserved specifically for objects you have imported.

• It is a good place to store objects that you will use in multiple presentations.

• You can add an item to the my content area by dragging it from the work area to the my content area.

• You can also add to the my content folder by clicking the icon to the right of the search button.

• Choose one of the options from the menu.

• Once we have created folders in My Content, we can share these folders with others by exporting them as collection files.

• Select a folder in the gallery• Select the drop down area• Select export as collection file to launch

the save as dialog box.• Send your file to a colleague and when he

or she double clicks the collection file it will be added to his or her gallery.

• Online Essential for Educators accesses a list of internet links that allow you to search for lesson activities, curriculum standards, classroom resources, or additional gallery content.

• Instead of interrupting the flow of your presentation by leaving notebook software, you can seamlessly launch a web page with supporting content while delivering your material.

• You must have an active internet connection and web browser to use the online resources.

• Use the attachments tab to attach files, shortcuts to files and links to websites and open them easily during your presentations.

• The attachments tab gives you easy access to the information you want to display.

• There are different types of attachments.• I already have some added to the presentation. • You can also insert a hyperlink by using the

insert button and choosing Insert hyperlink.• Type in the url under hyperlink.• Type the name you want displayed. • Click on the link to open the web page.

• The properties tab is a quick way to alter the appearance of objects.

• Click on the properties tab.

• Create some objects.– Shape– Line– Text– Creative pen object

The properties of each object can be changed.
