Abstract
In today’s world we see that most of the families consist of mainly the
parents and children. When a baby is born in a family there has to be
someone to look after the baby. Some parents have to do a double task of
keeping a check on the baby as well as do the household work. Keeping a
nanny could be an option but not all can afford nannies and also it is always
difficult for parents to rely on some strangers to look after their baby. So to
help such parents we have decided to come up with a smart cradle gear
which will help a mother or a father have a track of their child and do some
household work simultaneously. The idea is to design a smart cradle
alarming system that will signal the parents of the baby’s activities. The gear will be such that it will fit most of the common cradles or cribs. The
system will comprise of sensors, which will detect the baby’s activities and alarm their parents.

IoT has truly change the way of everyday living of the people ensuring safety, security, new
technological innovations where several devices are connected over the network and data is
exchanged from device to device. IoT has various applications over various fields such as
healthcare, automotive, monitoring devices, home automation, security devices using
alarming systems etc. Combining IoT with cloud and distributed computing, data science has
contributed greatly towards the new smart innovations.
II. BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
Chau-Kai-Hsieh developed a system which includes an amplifier circuit for amplifying a
sound signal that is received. For this sound signal generated as output ,a pulse signal
having zero crossings which is generated by a pulse generator which are aligned with zero
crossings of the amplified sound signal. The pulse signal is the input to a signal
recognition circuit. An output signal is generated by signal recognition circuit indicating
whether a baby was crying or not.
Amritha Ebenezer proposed to design a baby cradle equipped with cry analyzing system
that detects baby cry. According to the intensity of sound the cradle swings. It has wet
sensor to indicate the wetting of baby. Whenever the baby wets, resistance would change
thus sending a signal. Other sensors include temperature sensor to display baby
temperature. GSM modem via RS232 has been used to send message to parents in case
baby does not stop crying with in a particular instant of time.
III. OVERVIEW & PLANNING
3.1 Proposed System Architecture Overview
The overview of the gear consists of an Arduino board to which all the three sensors are
connected. These serve as the inputs to the Arduino as they feed the Arduino with analog
data which it manipulates according to the sketch provided to the Arduino. Bluetooth
Module has been used for transmitting the data to mobile device. According to the data,
parents can take the action they want to, depending upon the situation.

Whenever the baby will cry in the cradle, the noise will detected by the electret microphone
and will be amplified, the changes in the readings are then used as input for manipulating
the code and the readings are sent to the mobile app.The 5V battery powers the Arduino and
all the sensors will be properly soldered so there is no error in the readings.
3.1.2 Architecture Specification
The architecture consists of Arduino board and 3 sensors namely Water Sensor YL-83,
Electret Microphone and CZL601 Load Cell (40kg) with HX711.
The serial transfer of data from serial monitor is communicated by Bluetooth module
to an android application.

IV. SYSTEM DESIGN

V. ALGORITHM DESCRIPTION
Nowadays most of the parents are working parents or single parents who are working and
have a busy schedule throughout the day so there is heavy dependency on the security
electronic devices to monitor the safety of the baby, which is of the utmost importance. The
dependence on the technology has also increased due to the increase in number of criminal
cases reported when the baby is alone with the guardian or nanny. Here we propose an
application of IoT (Internet of Things) based on the sensor devices that record the real-time
reading and send it to mobile and if necessary create an alert so that immediate action is
taken and baby can be rescued accordingly. The most important aspect of this algorithm is
that the data recorded must be accurate so that there are no false alarms. To ensure this, we
did excessive testing to make the gear error free.

The gear comprises of three sensors namely the water sensor, load cell and electret
microphone; all connected to Arduino board through analog and digital pins. Load cell
comes with an amplifier module attached to it, which amplifies the signals of load cell. The
load cell measures the stress value and the change in stress value can be manipulated
according to our need. The water sensor has thin lines on its surface which gets connected as
the water droplet falls on it. Electret Microphone detects the signals in form of sound and
converts it to electrical signals, which needs to be modulated using an amplifying circuit.
Clapping circuit is used as an amplifying circuit .Buzzer can also be added as an alarming
mechanism. On receiving the data from the sensors during the testing phase ,readings were
noted and code can be manipulated accordingly to get the desired update on the mobile app
which can be seen in the screenshots(Figure. 8 & Figure 9) Electret microphone will also
give the readings of the noise disturbances so to avoid the errors , we could set a certain
threshold according to the pitch and the noise of the baby , only if that threshold is crossed,
the sensor will give the reading as “Baby is crying”.In the last phase of the algorithm, all the data is sent to mobile app triggers an alarming system that would immediately rescue the
baby. The flowchart of our algorithm is as shown in Figure. 6. It depicts the exact algorithm
as explained here used to detect fallacy and sharp changes,. It shows the step by step how
the devices work and on what condition the message will be sent to mobile device.

VI. RESULT
Here the baby was put into the cradle and the readings were taken by sensors. Initially the
baby started crying so it was sent to the app that baby is crying. When the baby was picked
up from the cradle and simultaneously little water was put on the bed-sheet of the cradle, it
showed the result as baby is wet and baby is out of cradle in serial monitor and the same
reading is being sent to mobile application in real-time. Figure. 6 & Figure. 7 show the
screenshots of serial monitor and mobile application.

VII. ADVANTAGES
1. The gear is cheap and easy to install in any cradle, stroller, or small bed of the baby.
This is entirely dependent on user’s choice. 2. Usage of three sensors make sure that the baby is overall secured unlike other smart
cradle which focuses on one of the functionality not ensuring full security.
3. Apart from having a Buzzer and alarm system, the gear is also connected to mobile
device which is an excellent application of IoT that will help in increasing the
connectivity of parents with their baby, so that they can peacefully carry on with their
work even from far places.
VIII. CONCLUSION & FUTURE SCOPE
The above proposed IoT based algorithm is designed to connect the parents to the baby
through a device in order to keep the parents informed about the security of baby when they
are not close to their baby. The sensors used ensure that the major aspects of security are
covered. Parents can keep a check on their baby very easily through a mobile device. The
algorithm fits best for the working parents or those who travel a lot especially for business
purpose. There is also large amount of opportunity that opens up in order to modify the
system further to extend the level of security using other different sensors, using cloud
computing technique and machine learning to extend the further research. The IoT has
transformed our everyday lives at a significant exponential rate. The idea of connecting the
information recorded from surroundings using complex sensors and sending it to mobile
device shows the vast possibilities of how IoT can influence the lives of people through
smart devices - what they are called these days. We have already seen the reach of IOT in
medical, security, environmental and many other fields. For example – The Running hand or
wrist gear that measures all the vital statistics of the body and sends it to your device in real-
time and you can easily monitor your performance.
To enhance the security of the baby apart from the basic requirement more modules can
be added like PIR sensor to detect the motion, camera to see the surroundings or the
person who has been around the baby.
To extend the range of the signals we can implement the same circuit with help of GSM
module and Wifi module. Using GSM module, the message can be send to parent even in
different city, country so parents can monitor their baby even on business trips for
companies.
One of the most important feature that can be added to this device is that a trigger can be
added in such a way that if the parents are very far away in different city or they could
not reach to their baby than through the app they should be able to trigger an emergency
help with nearest police station. For this GPS services can also be included. This ensures
expert level safety for the child.
More sensors to record statistics of body like body temperature, heartbeats, sleeping
pattern can be observed and using data science technology more information about the
baby can be known.

The data received from the sensors can be stored in the database and using data analytics
a pattern can be recorded when the baby cries or at what time of the day the baby wets
the bed the most. This would increase the credibility of the gear using the machine
learning techniques, prediction & modeling.
The mobile app we used for the prototype model is the built-in app for Bluetooth module.
Depending upon the requirement, android or ios app can be made which increases the
scope of project in app development framework. Additional functionalities like triggering
emergency from app, tracking the baby from app using GPS can also be added.
This cradle gear opens up the enormous opportunities in fields of cloud computing, data
science, algorithms, security, statistics & databases. As a result, we conclude our algorithm
by developing a prototype gear, which can be fitted into any baby cradle to ensure the safety
of the baby. The sensors used in the project will send the data to the serial port which is send
to the android app of the android phone of the parents and they get alerted that their baby
might be in danger and need some urgent help. We have also included a buzzer that can alert
the parents at home directly.
