Weapons Small hand guns.

These are Turkish soldiers. They usually used a cannon type of gun, that shoots fire.

This is a small gun, that was typically carried by a solider.

Softening Up

A girl, burning, runs naked north of Saigonand screams into eternity.

A mother bathingher forever-daughter is infinitely tender in Minamata.

A woman/soldier, pointing to men’s genitals,gives a thumb’s up.

This woman is lookingdown on a leashed dog

This woman is smilingbeside her boyfriend, behind a mound of bodies.

A girl, really, she is fresh from Kentucky,a chicken-processing factory.

She’s trailer trash.She’s no one’s princess.She’s not even Jessica Lynch.

She’s having some fun.She’s following orders.She’s softening them up.

Now from this soldier’sessential/constructedwoman’s body, a son.

She’s a mother.My heart shattersinto a thousand rubies.

The poem does go off topic. It talks about how the girl is screaming and running and then talks about Kentucky and a chicken factory.

6. Sound and Rhythm There’s not really sound or rhythm because the poem goes off topic a lot and is weird.

It talks about how a mother has to watch her daughter go through horrible things and can’t do anything about it.

They don’t really.

The Lewis Gun was the first true light machine gun that could in theory be operated by one man, though in practice the bulky ammo pans required an entire section of men to keep the gun operating. This is not the typical gun a solider would carry, but since it could be used by just one man, it made an exception for small guns.
