    NOV. 29

by Marty HarrisShoppers are invited to kick off the holiday sea-

son by patronizing the many small businesses in theWebster Groves and Kirkwood area on Small Busi-ness Saturday on Nov. 29. With the diversity of thelocal shops, shoppers are sure to nd that special gift

for even the most nicky on the list.

I think Small Business Saturday is an opportuni-ty for the community to celebrate the holiday seasonand to show their support for their local business-es, said Donna Poe, executive director of DowntownKirkwood Special Business District. Its really grat-

ifying for businesses owners to have all the peoplecome in and be supportive on this particular day. Itsvery energizing for them.

People are just really excited for it this year, Poesaid. It turned into a pretty big day.

On Saturday, take the time to meet shop ownersand take advantage of the days promotions.

    Old Orchard

Small Business Saturday is such a great way forus to say thanks to our loyal customers, said JessicaKester, owner of Verde Kids and a member of the citycommission for the Old Orchard Taxing District inWebster Groves. Small Business Saturday is alwaysone of her favorite days.

We are able to do a few little things to say thanksto people for making the effort to shop small, but we

also hear from a lot of customers about how muchthey love Verde Kids and how special they think theshop is, Kester said. We will have fun activities

for the kids and little treats. We will also offer buymore, save more specials for our customers.

Other shops in Old Orchard will also offer specialpromotions on Saturday. Just over 50 businesses

make up the Old Orchard Taxing District. Boundar-ies are Big Bend at Lockwood to Big Bend at Dale

    Avenue.

Other shops in the neighborhood, like The Clo-ver and Naturally Pure Salon, will offer gifts withpurchase, Kester said. Garland Wines will have anew collection of French wines and great wine-relat-

ed gifts. The newest shop in Old Orchard, The Novel

Neighbor, will have two local authorson hand to help customers pick greatbooks for everyone on their list, sheadded.

Old WebsterIn Old Webster, 70 businesses make

up the Old Webster Trade Association, according to Stacie Swederska, ownerof Paisley Boutique and vice presidentof the trade association. Swederska,a big advocate for Small BusinessSaturday, said its all about gettinginto your community and supportinglocal businesses.

In addition to the specials and dealsthroughout Old Webster on Nov. 29,the association is sponsoring a pass-port which features 10 participatingbusinesses: Pinots Palette, PaisleyBoutique, Kind Soap, Yucandu, Roll-ing Ridge Nursery, Massage Envy,

Initial Design, Leopard, Great FrameUP & Relish and Euclid Records.

Readers can pick up a passport atany participating location or printone off by joining the Old WebsterSmall Business Saturday event onFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/events/988343901195256/, according

to Joshua Dehne, owner of Pinots Pal-ette and a member of the Old WebsterTrade Association.

If they stop by all 10 stores on Sat-urday between noon and 4 p.m. for astamp, they can be entered to win oneof four Old Webster gift baskets valued

at over $50 each, Dehne said.According to Dehne, Small Business

Saturday is an important event as itkeeps money in the community.

For example, Pinots Palette Web-ster Groves invites our guests to joinus for an unforgettable evening offun, friends and ne art, where our

local artist guides groups step-by-stepthrough their featured painting, hesaid. When customers support a localbusiness like Pinots Palette, we areable to hire local artist to lead sessions, create more revenue for other localbusinesses, as well as taxes for the lo-cal government, and give back to thecommunity better in ways such as our

Painting it Forward program, wherethe prots from classes are donated to

    local organizations.

    Downtown Kirkwood

Special promotions can also be foundon Saturday in Downtown Kirkwood. For participating merchants, visit thewebsite, downtownkirkwood.com.

the west and Taylor on the east.Poe said Downtown Kirkwood signed

up to be a neighborhood championwith American Express, the sponsor ofSmall Business Saturday. That meansweve got stuff, Poe said, noting thatstores have bags and other promotionalitems.

Check out some of the days high-lights in Kirkwood: Stop by KirkwoodTrain Station from 10 a.m. to noon fora cup of coffee courtesy of the Kirkwood

    3/8

    November 28 - December 4, 2014 Webster-Kirkwood Times 15-A

With Small Business Saturday, small businesses now have a day oftheir own during the critical holidayseason.

Small Business Saturday is held an-nually on the Saturday after Thanks-giving. This year it falls on Nov. 29.It is a day for everyone from thebusiness owners who create jobs to thecustomers who buy locally to sup-port small businesses that invigorate

    the economy and keep communitiesthriving.

American Express initiated SmallBusiness Saturday in 2010 to helpsmall businesses get more exposureduring one of the biggest shopping

weekends of the year.In 2012, government ofcials in all

50 states and Washington, D.C., of-cially recognized Small Business Sat-urday including President Obamaand the U.S. Senate.

In 2013, U.S. consumers who wereaware of Small Business Saturday areestimated to have spent a reportedtotal of $5.7 billion with independentmerchants.

    The 3/50 Project

The 3/50 Project was started in2009 by Minneapolis-based retail con-sultant Cinda Baxter. It began with ablog post and has quickly taken off.

Baxters idea was simple: if half ofthe employed U.S. population chose

three locally owned independent busi-nesses they would hate to lose, andthen spent a combined total of $50 amonth with them, it would have a ma-

jor impact generating an estimated$42.6 billion of revenue annually.

For every $100 spent in locallyowned independent stores, $68 re-turns to the community through tax-es, payroll and other expenditures. If that money is spent at a nationalchain, only $43 stays in the communi-ty. Spend it online and nothing comeshome.

New this year is the LookLocal freeapp for smartphones. Download theapp and nd small businesses near you.

The business owners in Webstercontribute to many of the neighbor-hood events from the Jazz Festival tothe Holiday Open House, along withthe Street Dance, Cookie Walk, GirlsNight Out and many other neighbor-hood events, she said. Most (busi-

ness owners) live in Webster, so itgoes without saying that they havean equitable stake in the health andprosperity of their own local businesscommunity associates.

    Theres also an economic compo-nent.

The Downtown Kirkwood SpecialBusiness District contributes to thesales tax revenue to the city of Kirk-wood, Poe said. The combined con-tribution of businesses in DowntownKirkwood is signicant to the city.

Businesses and property ownerscontribute funding to the special busi-ness district which is reinvested in thecommunity in the form of plantings, benches, streetlights and the city issupportive of all this, Poe said. With-out the contribution from small busi-

nesses, some of these things peoplelike would not happen.

    Upcoming Holiday Events

After Saturday, plan to return toDowntown Kirkwood, Old Websterand Old Orchard for their upcomingholiday festivities.

In Downtown Kirkwood Bring acamera to take a free photo with Santaat the historic Kirkwood Train Stationon Thursdays, Dec 4 and 11 from 5 to 7p.m. Visit with a live reindeer on Dec.

    11. (Arrive by 6:30 p.m. The averagewait time for photos with Santa is 30minutes or longer.

Visit Santa during the day on Fri-day, Dec. 12 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

In Webster Groves, the WebsterCookie Walk is coming up on Satur-

day, Dec. 13, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Shopswill have cookie samples and recipecards for customers to collect. Look forCookie Walk posters in the windows ofparticipating shops.

    I believe people choose

to live in Webster Grovesbecause of the great

    schools and charmingneighborhoods where

they can grab a greatmeal and look through

    the shops.
