Atresia

Meconium Ileus

Atresia

• Atresia – congenital obstruction due to complete occlusion

• Stenosis – partial intraluminal occlusion

•Due to mesenteric vascular occlusion

•Single or multiple

Meconium Ileus

Abnormal intestinal secretions

Thick and viscid forming pellets causing obstruction of ileum

Simple or complicated

Clinical features

• Bilious vomiting

• Gross abdominal distention with visible bowel loops

• Failure to pass meconium

Investigations• Erect X ray abdomen

Plain X ray abdomen

Atresia : Grossly dilated bowel Multiple airfluid levels

Meconium Ileus : Soap bubble appearance

Complicated MI : Calcification

Barium enema

Treatment

• Correct fluid & electrolyte imbalance first

• Surgery-• Laparotomy • Resection & anastomosis

Complications

• Prolonged ileus • Short bowel syndrome
