WORKINPROGRESS

Our president, Harmon Ward, openedthemeetingwithannouncementsandmadesurethecomputer(mountedinfront of him) was working correctly forthewebportionofthemeeting.

It was our second in-person SMAmeetingattheRedCrossBuildingaswellasanon-linecomputermeeting–sobothwere conducted. I have hopes that thenext in-person meeting will have moremembersbringingintheirmodels.Atthis

meeting, wealsohadasurpriseasSeanFallesenbroughtinalargescratchbuildVasamodel with plans and other wood given to him by one of the plasticmodelers. HedonatedittoanyonewhodesireditatthemeetingandJPwashappytotakeithomeandworkmoreonit(seethewrite-upbelow).

DonDressel–HMSRoebuck Don brought in his continuingslow progress on theHMS roebuck, the44-gun fifth-rate frigate of the RoyalNavy. Duetohealthconsiderationsandother things, work is very slow butcontinuing. The work on the quartergalleries is slowly progressing withmorethoughtalongthelinesofthenextstep. Work on the poop deck isprogressingwithinstallationofthebitts

Research is also being donewith the realization that there is no “belaying plan”suppliedwith the ships plans byHahn. It is a very interesting period for Britishshipsasfarastheriggingisconcerned–theyarejuststartingtousebelayingpins.Research has shown that there is no belaying pin diagramof this ship (thanks toDougTolbert)butagoodsubstituteisprovidedbyusingtheAnatomyoftheShipseries book The 24-Gun FrigatePandora of 1779 by JohnMcKay& Ron Coleman(thanksforthesuggestionbyMagnusMcCloud).SincethisisinthesameperiodastheRoebuck, it is a frigate (apparently the smaller frigateswere transformed firstbefore the larger1st and2nd rates of theRoyalNavy), I hope that the rigging andbelayingplansaremoreaccurate.ReferencewasalsomadetoTheRiggingofShipsInTheDaysofTheSpritsailTopmastbyR.C.Anderson,buthisbookonlygoes toabout1720,whichistooearlyfortheRoebuck. TOM WOLF REPORT FOR ENDEAVOUR GROUP S&T OCTOBER 2, 2021 In July 2018, I attended the Port Macquarie Expo. Both Richard Keyes and Kevin Hudson also attended and Richard exhibited his wonderful pagodas. Whilst there, Richard put up for sale his part-built model of HMS Pegasus (an Amati-Victory Models kit of “HMS Fly” – renamed).

It was at about this time that Richard retreated from some modelling due to health issues. The hull was mostly complete and the masts were ready to set with the shrouds already placed. I had to install the deadeyes and

Page 10: SMA Newsletter October

10

chains into the rails and finish off the rails, install the deadeyes and various blocks on the shrouds and the standing gear and finish off the model in its standing gear state.

Along the way, the euphroes and crows- feet were installed Next it was time to coil some deck ropes for the guns to finish off the decking, but the gun barrels are not fixed, nor are the other guns barrels along the gundeck below the fore and quarter deck (and the gun-ports) as these are too delicate with the model still needing a lot of handling This is what the

model looks like at the moment. Due to
