Coach David Bacani enters his 5th year as the Eagles Head Coach for the 2014 baseball season. Prior to joining Santa Margarita, Dave began honing his coaching skills during the off season peri-ods of his successful playing career. For seven seasons, beginning in 2003, Coach Bacani was a valued coach for Blue Wave Base-ball, JSerra High School, Orange Lutheran High School, Concor-dia University and the Orange County Flyers of the professional independent league. Dave then joined the Eagles as head coach in 2010. Each year under Coach Bacani’s leadership the Eagle program has shown significant improvement in both its Trinity League and overall record, leading up to last season’s CIF playoff run to the Division I Quarter Finals.
Coach Bacani’s philosophy for success is focused on player development in both athletics and academics, with an empha-sis on team, individual character and hard work. In addition to the Eagles success at the high school level, nearly 60% of all Eagle players during Coach Bacani’s tenure have gone on to play college ball. This includes 13 graduating seniors from last year’s class, all of whom will be attending college, with 10 playing for their respective college teams.
Coach Bacani attended Los Alamitos High School where he was a standout football and baseball player for the Griffins. As a senior at Los Al, on the football field he was named All-CIF, All-County, and was Sunset League Defensive Player of the Year. On the diamond, he was an All-League selection.
Coach Bacani was a 4 year starter at Cal State Fullerton from 1998-2001. While at Fullerton, Coach Bacani was a 4-time 1st Team All Big West conference selection, the only player in Big West Baseball history to do so. He was a 2-time All American as well and made 2 College World Series appearances, making the All Col-lege World Series Team in ‘01. Coach Bacani holds school records for the most Hit By Pitches, Runs Scored, and Walks at Fullerton. In 2001, Baseball America created the “David Bacani Award” to be annually awarded to the best college player under 5’10”.
In 2001, Coach Bacani was selected in the 22nd round of the major league baseball draft by the New York Mets. In 2003, Coach Bacani was the only player in the Mets organization to have more walks than strike-outs in his plate appearances. In 2004 Coach Bacani was awarded the Fan Favorite award from the Double A Binghamton Mets. He was a part of two championship teams (Brooklyn Cyclones/St. Lucie Mets) and was selected to two all star teams while with the Mets. Following the 2005 season, Coach Bacani was selected in the Rule 5 draft by the Boston Red Sox. Coach Bacani won the Double A championship with the Portland Sea Dogs, Red Sox affiliate, in 2006. In six plus years in affiliated professional baseball, Coach Bacani is proud to say he won three championships and went to the playoffs every year.
In 2007 following an injury, Coach Bacani was released by the Red Sox and signed a contract with the inde-pendent professional club Orange County Flyers. Coach Bacani was a player for the Flyers in 2007 and 2008, winning a Golden League Championship in ‘08, and was a player/coach in 2009. Coach Bacani was selected to two All Star teams while with the Flyers.
In his time away from the field, Coach Bacani enjoys golfing, watching movies, and spending time with his family and friends. Coach Bacani currently lives in Ladera Ranch with his beautiful and supportive wife, Jamie, their 3 year old daughter Maison and baby Madden, born November 4th.
