Slums are defined as building or areas that are deteriorated, hazardous, unsanitary, or lacking in standard condition.
History• As the population grew, jobs were hard to find. • Incomes decreased dramatically.• The slums in Manila are the result of informal entrepreneurs, poor economy, and the lack of government assistance.
Location & Population • Many slums are
built… • Slums are located wherever there is space and opportunity• There are 526 communities of slums in all cities around Metro Manila• 80,000 people occupy a square kilometer of a slum.• Located in vacant lands that are both private & government owned
along rivers
near garbage dumps
along railroads tracksUnder bridges
Living Conditions • Many slums lack…• People who live in slums are families or individuals whose income or combined household falls below the poverty threshold

Housing & Employment
Conditions
Social• The number of children to
worry about became a problem
Political• The government created the
MMDA(Metropolitan Manila Development Authority) to do the following things:•Development Planning•Transport & Traffic Management•Solid Waste Disposal•Flood Control & Sewage management•Urban renewal, Zoning, Land Use Planning, and Shelter Services•Health & Sanitation, Urban Protection, and Pollution Control
• Part of the government accepts the fact that there are slums, but are ignorant towards it.
Statistic
•2/3 population are unemployed or too young to work.• Land values increased by 11% in selected locations in Metro Manila in 1995.
So…if people can’t pay where they live, they have to move to slums.
•Manila has an approximate population of 11,553,427 with 35% of the population live in urban slums.• That’s more than 4,000,000 people.
Suggestions• The government should actually care about the people and try to provide better living conditions, such as: food and clean water, and organize a party to clean rivers for sanitation.• Don’t have too many children especially if you’re not financially stable, or a single parent.• For people in the slums to make a difference in their life and look for jobs that does not require education.
