What I Need to Know

When you are reading, it is important to be able to distinguish between facts and

opinions.

Written materials such as articles, website information, biographies, and newspapers

often contain facts and opinions. Being able to tell them apart will judge the validity of a

writer’s ideas. Learning to discern what is true from what is false is a critical life skill.

This module is done for you to help distinguish between facts and opinions.

a. Define facts and opinion; and

b. Differentiate facts from opinion.

What I Know

Directions: Look at the images/pictures and read the statements. Write F if it is a fact and

write O if it is an opinion. Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

Dogs are better than cats. Christmas is on December 25th.

Pandas are the cutest animals.

Apples are sweeter than

bananas.

Lesson

1 DIFFERENCE BETWEEN

FACTS AND OPINIONS

An important part of reading comprehension is determining what a fact is and what an

opinion is. In education, children as young as kindergarten engage in conversation about facts

and opinions.

Instructing young children on the terms and concepts of fact and opinion is a little like

their emerging math skills - begin with the basics and allow for more information to come as

they mature. Fact and opinion as reading and analytic skills necessary for understanding and

mentally processing text. Knowing the difference between fact and opinion helps readers

make sense of information.

What’s In

Directions: Read the short selection and tell which sentences tell fact or opinion. Write your

answer on a separate sheet of paper.

__________ 1. Teodoro Valencia was the park Commissioner In-Charge of Rizal Park.

__________ 2. Rizal Park is the most beautiful park in the world.

__________ 3. It has a spacious playground, smooth-skating rinks, and inviting bicycle

lanes.

__________ 4. Families enjoy a picnic on the clean and thick grass area.

__________ 5. Teenagers watch carps swimming in circular ponds and stroll around on

paths lined with hedges.

__________ 6. The sunset looks pretty in summer when the sun paints the clouds in

gorgeous colors.

__________ 7. Every Sunday afternoon, a concert is presented by a military band.

__________ 8. Sentimental kundimans heard over the sound system of the park.

__________ 9. In summer, people sleep outdoors in the park.

__________ 10. People congratulated Theodoro Valencia for making the park beautiful

and a peaceful place to go to.

He was Theodoro F. Valencia, the park commissioner himself. He was in charge

of Rizal Park and it was he who managed to make the park one of the most beautiful

parks of its kind in the world. He wanted to make children happy. That is why Rizal

Park has playground for children, a skating rink and a bicycle lane. Families have

picnics on the grass under flowering trees and palms. Teenagers sit on the benches or

stroll around the fountains and along the flowering hedges or watch the carp and

goldfish swim gaily in the ponds. A planetarium stands beside a library rich in

magazines and books for young and old. Every Sunday Afternoon a concert is presented

by military bands. You can also hear sentimental kundimans over the sound system of

the park.

What Is It

Fact is verifiable. It is a statement that may be proven to be true because it exists. We can

determine whether it is true by researching the evidence. This may involve numbers, dates,

testimony, etc.

Example:

Coronavirus (COVID 19) is an illness caused by virus that can be spread from person to

person. The virus that causes COVID 19 is a new coronavirus that has spread throughout the

world. As of December 9, 2020 Philippines, has 444,164 cases.

-worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/Philippines

Opinion is a statement that tells what the writer thinks, believes, or feels about a subject. It

cannot be proved true or false. The writer may use words that appeal to the readers emotions.

Example:

Washing hands properly with soap and water remain to be simplest and most consistent way

of preventing the spread of getting infected by the virus.

Remember that a fact is not the opposite of an opinion. They are simply types of statement. If

a fact is untrue or false, it does not turn into an opinion. By the same logic, if an opinion is

believed by everyone, it does not turn into a fact. Opinion cannot be proved; however, they

can be supported with facts and other knowledgeable opinions. Facts can be proved with

evidence, statistics, records, photographs, data and etc. Perhaps most important, facts are not

better than opinions, or vice versa there is no hierarchy. They are simply types of statement,

even though an opinion cannot be proved, opinions are every bit as important as facts.

We Are the World

Song Writers/Composers: Michael

Jackson and Lionel Richie

There comes a time

When we heed a certain call

When the world must come together as

one

There are people dying

Oh, and it’s time to lend a hand to life

The greatest gift of all

We can’t go on

Pretending day by day

That someone, somewhere soon make a

change

We are all a part of God’s great big

family

And the truth, you know, love is all we

need

We are the world

We are the children

We are the ones who make a brighter

day, so let’s start giving

There’s a choice we’re making

We’re saving our own lives

It’s true we’ll make a better day, just

you and me.

Oh, send them your heart

So they know that someone cares

And their lives will be stronger and free

As God has shown us by turning stones

to bread

And so we all must lend a helping hand

We are the world

We are the…

What I Can Do

parts are fact and what parts are opinion. Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

Choose or pick 5 Facts statements and 5 Opinion statements from the letter you have read.

Fact:

Fact:

Marco got a letter from his Uncle Ben, the airplane pilot. Uncle Ben has traveled all over

the world.

Dear Marco,

This is my third time visiting Paris, and I think it is one of the most beautiful cities

in the world. Paris, as I’m sure you know, is the capital of France. Today I walked along

the Avenue des Champs-Elysees, which is the most famous street in Paris. I think it may

be the most famous street in the world. It is lined with beautiful trees, fountains and

flowers. There are shops, theaters and restaurants and many sidewalks cafes.

I had a wonderful lunch at one of the sidewalk cafes. The pastry I had for dessert

was especially delicious. Paris is known for its fine French cooking. I noticed on the café

menu that they serve one of the most popular French dishes which is escargot, snails in

other words! I don’t think I’ll be trying that while I am here, though.

When you think of Paris, you probably think of the Eiffel Tower. Anyone visiting

Paris has to see the Eiffel Tower. You can see the top of the Eiffel Tower from anywhere

in the city. It is almost 1,000 feet tall. When it was built, it was the tallest building in the

world. You can walk up the stairs to the top, or you can take an elevator. From the top you

can look out across all the Paris. It is an amazing sight!

Tomorrow I am going to the Louvre Museum. It is one of the largest museums in

the world. Once it was the French King’s palace. Now, it is home to some of the most

famous artworks in the world. I look forward to seeing the “Mona Lisa” painting. Have

you seen pictures of it? It was painted over 500 years ago! There have been many poems

and songs written about this painting. The woman in the painting has a little half-smile. To

me, what makes it seem like she has a secret that isn’t going to tell.

Yours truly,

Uncle Ben

South Africa

The Republic of South Africa is a country located at the southern tip of the

continent of Africa. It has a very long coast along both the Atlantic and Indian oceans.

The Cape of Good Hope, at the southernmost point of South Africa, has been an

important place in sailing history. It has a long history that includes many challenges.

About 50 million people live in South Africa today. It is 79.5% Black, 9.2%

White, 8.9% coloured, and 2.5% Asian. Coloured is a term used formally in South

Africa for mixed race. It is spelled with a u because that is how the people in England

spell it, and it was England that labeled these groups. Race has been a very important

part of its history. For many years, Black and coloured South Africans had few rights.

Today, the situation is much better.

The problems for South Africa probably got started about 150 years ago. That

was when gold and diamonds were discovered in inland South Africa. Many people

moved to the country, to work in the mines and to own them. There were two groups of

Europeans in the country: people from Holland and people from England. They fought

for control of this land.

The trouble continued. The native peoples had a very difficult time. The Natives'

Land Act of 1913 severely restricted the ownership of land by 'Blacks' to the small

percentage of 7%. In 1948, the National Party was elected and intensified the

implementation of the program of racial segregation that had begun with European

settlers, and subsequently continued by the South African governments. The Nationalist

Government set up a system of segregationist laws, which meant that only whites could

own most property and that Blacks and coloured people had very few rights. That

terrible system became known as apartheid.

People struggled to end apartheid. It was so very unfair. Their fight went on for

years. One great leader, Nelson Mandela, was put into prison in 1964 and kept there for

27 years. Even though he was in prison, he still was a great leader. His writings helped

inspire others.

Other nations recognized the injustice of apartheid and argued against it. Those

good countries were protesting this ongoing situation. But the government of South

Africa did not change for many years. It took a long time and an international boycott,

but finally there was progress. A boycott is when a group refuses to do business with

another group.

In 1990, the old government allowed Nelson Mandela’s political party, the

African National Congress, to have a voice. Finally, it released this persistent hero from

prison. The first multi-racial elections were held in 1994, and Nelson Mandela’s party

won. He became the President and served as president until 1999. In 1993 he won the

Nobel Peace Prize. That is an international prize given each year to someone who helps

the world have more peace.

10

Many people believe there would have been more progress if South Africa’s

government had freed Nelson Mandela much sooner. But Nelson Mandela does not

believe in looking back at problems. He wants people to look forward, to work together

to plan and make progress. He is a very great leader for Africa. He is a leader for the

whole world.
