Activity 4.0John, a deployed TERT team member, comes to you and states that last night he was directed by the supervisor of his shift, to do a lot of data entry in his “down time”. The volume of in-coming and out-going calls has decreased and the supervisor has assigned him to the data entry. This involves typing in call and response information for periods when the 911 system was being upgraded. This is a considerable amount of data entry, John doesn’t object to helping when there is nothing else to do, but the on-site personnel have not been assigned this additional responsibility. His concern is that everyone should be doing this, not just him and that this task is not within the scope of the deployment.

Characteristics of a Good AAR Avoids giving a critique or lecture Facilitate discussing by asking leading questions Let participants describe what happened in their own

words Discuss how it happened, why it happened, and how it

could be done better Focus the discussion so important tactical lessons are

made explicit Relates tactical events to subsequent results Avoids detailed examination of events not directly

related to major training objectives Cuts off excuses by participants for inappropriate

tactical actions29
