Respiratory Therapy

Respiratory therapists do many different things for patients inside and out of hospitals.

They deliver respiratory care to patients. They perform breathing treatments on patients. They

are responsible for evaluating the respiratory function of their patients and reporting it to the

patients attending physician. They can perform diagnostic pulmonary tests on patients, according

to the orders of their physician in charge.

In order to work in this exciting and fast expanding occupation one has to attain at least

an associate’s degree in sciences. Some programs also offer bachelor’s degrees as well. Some

classes that are required in order to become a respiratory therapist are human anatomy, human

physiology, physics and mircrobiology. They will also learn about therapeutic and diagnostic,

patient assessment, and medical recording and reimbursement.

As a respiratory therapist in a clinical setting gains experience he or she can move from

providing general care to caring for critically ill patients. Those with advanced degrees may

become supervisors. Those in health care agencies may become branch managers. Some

respiratory therapists eventually teach.

Respiratory therapy is an exciting and new branch of providing health care to pulmonary

patients. Mrs. Trump made it sound really cool. I liked how she pointed out the differences

between respiratory therapy and nursing. I also liked how we got to intubate a fake body and

draw blood from a fake artery.
