Nathan Professor of Civil Engineering University of British Columbia Vancouver, British Columbia Canada ' t has been found that the usual methods of handling slenderness in reinforced concrete columns do not apply directly to prestressed concrete members because of differences in the moment-curvature characteristics. The PCI Committee on Prestressed Con- crete Columns has been studying the question for some time, and the present paper is a review of the slenderness problem from that viewpoint. First, the behavior of reinforced and prestressed concrete columns is reviewed, and the application of various code approaches is discussed. Then, attempts to develop methods specif- ically for prestressed concrete columns are described.
