In 1773 George Leila a slave, was the first AfricanAmerican Baptist to be licensed by the Baptist topreach in Georgia. Leila played a part in thefounding of the Savannah Church by convertingsome of his first members. Initially he was licensedto preach to the slaves on plantations and alongthe Savannah River, In Georgia and South Carolina.Leila’s master freed him before the RevolutionaryWar.

After the Revolutionary War started in 1778 Leilaconnected with the British that occupied Savannahto secure his safety behind British lines. The Britishoffered safety to slaves that escaped from theirmasters. After the British occupied Savannah, thePatriot master of David George and his followersfled to another area. All the members of the SilverBluff church went to the city to go behind Britishlines for freedom. They joined with some of Leila’sgroup. Others were converted by Leila’s preaching, including Andrew Bryan and his wife Hannah in1782. Bryan became a preacher and leader in thecongregation.

In 1782 hundreds of blacks were evacuated fromSavannah by the British, who transported many toNova Scotia and other colonies, and some toLondon. Leila and his family sailed with the Britishfor freedom to Jamaica. David George and hisfamily went with Loyalists to Nova Scotia. Bothfounded Baptist congregations in their newlocations. Later George and his family migrated toSierra Leone where he planted another Baptistchurch.

Bryan, who had purchased his and his wife'sfreedom, was the only one of the three early blackBaptist preachers in the colonies to stay inSavannah and the new United States. He continuedto preach and organize other slaves in theSavannah area despite persecution from localEpiscopal authorities. He called people together asthe church's first pastor.

Bryan led the First African Baptist Church to officialrecognition with 67 members on January 20, 1788,at their regular meeting place of Brampton's barn, approximately three miles west of Savannah. Theywere recognized by Rev. Abraham Marshall (aEuropean-American minister) and his free blackassistant Jesse Peter (who took the name JesseGalphin). Galphin was also one of the founders ofthe Silver Bluff Baptist Church. Marshall examinedand baptized members that day.

The efforts of Haiti to secure its independencefrom colonial rule beginning in 1791 areremarkable for the fact that what began as a slaverevolt was to ultimately succeed in prevailing over

the resources of the French Empire and to form a government of Western

Hemisphere Africans. Haiti, much smaller in population than theUnited States, was attacked by armies as large In 1794 thecongregation built a frame structure on land Bryan had purchasedthe year before. They called the church Bryan Street AfricanBaptist Church. Bryan lived to see the church grow to over 400members. His brother Sampson, who assisted him, remained aslave. In 1800 the congregation had grown to 700. By 1802, BryanStreet renamed itself First African Baptist Church, and two otherblack congregations were founded: Second African Baptist Churchand the Ogeechee (Third) Baptist Church.

In 1815, Andrew C. Marshall, Bryan's nephew, became pastor ofFirst African Baptist. In 1822, the First Colored Baptist Churchand the Second Colored Baptist Church recombined and becamethe First African Baptist Church. The church organized the firstSunday school for African Americans (endorsed by the

Independent Presbyterian Church) on July 26, 1826.

By 1830 under Marshall, the congregation of First African BaptistChurch had grown to 2,417 members. In 1832, the congregationhad a serious split over doctrinal issues that took years to resolve. Some members felt that Marshall was too taken by the new ideasof Rev Alexander. Marshall and more than 2,600 members left tofound a congregation that kept the name of First African Baptist. They purchased a building at Franklin Square that had belongedto the First Baptist Church. In the 1850s, they constructed asanctuary facility on Franklin Square, which has been continuouslyoccupied by First African Baptist.

The congregation at Bryan Street, numbering fewer than 200,kept the facility built under Andrew Bryan and took the name ThirdBaptist Church. Later they renamed it First Bryan Baptist Church.

As the Georgia Baptist association grew, there was competitionamong congregations to claim lines to founding core membersand be declared the first church in the state. In 1888 at theGeorgia Convention, claims were examined as to primacy of FirstAfrican Baptist of Savannah and the First Bryan Baptist Church. The convention declared that First African Baptist of Savannahwas the banner church, due largely to Marshall's leadership duringthe difficult years of the 1830s, which held his congregationtogether under the name of the original church.

once the money is recouped, keep in mind you area commodity and it is a standard 90% to your 10%.Now this can still be a whole lot of money in thebank, but when you look at 10% of 100% whichone would you prefer? Once mainstream artistlearned the business, they started becomingindependent left and right. Does that sound funnyor what?

Another thing about the record labels they don’twork like the days of Motown, they want to seehow many records you can sell before they talk toyou, now give that some thought! Artist if you trulywant to learn the game, we live in an informationsociety, there are honest consultants that can helpyou and there are some shady people out therealso. The key word is do your research, whoeveryou are considering to consult for you, start bychecking their credentials before you pay anymoney out your pocket. Artists please take the timeto think about your career whether it is a label orchoosing the right strategies for your career. Inclosing I would like to stress that I don’t have anyproblems with record labels it may be good movefor you, just find out what’s entailed.

Be sure to check out our website atmedia.slaminfatbeatzradio.com and don’tforget to check the show time schedules.

There has neverbeen a time inhistory wherethe Independentartist could callhis own shots. It’s no longer upto the recordcompanies tohold the trumpc a r d .Technology haschanged thefuture for thei n d e p e n d e n t

artist. On any given day, an artist can go intohis/her own studio and put a track together, creatively and in one’s own time. Artist can keep100% of their earnings if they stop waiting for alabel to discover or validate them. This is yourdream, it is your job and it should be treated assuch. With the proper training an artist can succeed.

An artist should not be in the industry if he doesnot understand business. It is called the musicbusiness because it is a business, point blank. Inthis industry it is based on 90% business and 10%talent. Have you ever wondered why recordcompanies take 90% of artist earnings? The artist’slooks at the glamour, fame, and wardrobe thejewelry and let’s not forget the groupies.

I am not trying to drag a gray cloud around, however; think about this, a record company mayspend 80,000 to 800, 000 on an artist, now thismoney has to produce something. The recordcompany is not spending it because you look orsound good it used for airplay, tours, fashion, themodeling agencies, studio time, and the list goeson. You may receive some nice gifts as incentives, but now you have to make this money back and
