The Uplogix Local Management platform utilizes the reliability of the Inmarsat satellite network to provide out-of-band ( OOB ) connectivity to managed remote networks. With Inmarsat's high-speed data services, Uplogix can automate management of network infrastructure, including the ability to provide a secure connection for administrators to remote gear.

A crucial aspect of managing devices locally is the need for OOB connectivity. In the event of a problem that disrupts the remote site's primary connection, like a hung router or VSAT modem, or even an antenna failure, the Uplogix appliance "dials-out" over Inmarsat to establish a management connection.

Over this two-way connection, administrators in the NOC are alerted of the specific device with a problem. Then they can monitor automated actions taken by Uplogix, or issue their own commands over the OOB connection. To maximize data efficiency and minimize cost, Uplogix appliances can be configured to only send information about changes in device state, and timeout automatically by disconnecting a session after a set time or data volume.

VSAT is a two-way satellite ground station with a dish antenna that is generally smaller than 3 metres. VSAT is essential for departments that deploy personnel in remote locations that may require temporary or short-term network access for voice, high speed data and video Internet communications. Additionally, it can be used for operations in remote areas and offshore installations that are not serviced by more conventional terrestrial communications services. Typical data rates range from 64 Kbps up to 4 Mbps.

VSAT's are most commonly used to transmit narrowband data or broadband data ( for the provision of satellite internet access to remote locations, VoIP or video ). VSAT's can be used for transportable, on-the-move applications ( utilising phased array antennas ) or for mobile maritime communications. VSAT can also support Interactive Distance Learning ( IDL ). Typically, VSAT's access satellites in geosynchronous orbit to relay data from small remote earth stations ( terminals ) to other terminals ( in mesh configurations ) or master earth station "hubs" ( in star configurations ).

Most VSAT networks are able to be configured in the following topologies :

A star topology, using a central uplink site, such as a network operations center ( NOC ), to transport data back and forth to each VSAT terminal via satellite.

A mesh topology, where each VSAT terminal relays data via satellite to another terminal by acting as a hub, minimizing the need for a centralized uplink site.

A combination of both star and mesh topologies. Some VSAT networks are configured by having several centralized uplink sites ( and VSAT terminals stemming from it ) connected in a multi-star topology with each star ( and each terminal in each star ) connected to each other in a mesh topology. Others configured in only a single star topology sometimes will have each terminal connected to each other as well, resulting in each terminal acting as a central hub. These configurations are utilized to minimize the overall cost of the network, and to alleviate the amount of data that has to be relayed through a central uplink site ( or sites ) of a star or multi-star network.

The 2406 Antenna is a 60 cm Ku-Band maritime VSAT antenna for SCPC, broadband, or hybrid networks. This antenna system complies with the FCC's 04-286, WRC-03 resolution 902 and ETSI's latest EN 302 340 for ESV ( Earth Stations on Vessels ), which is a remarkable achievement for a 60 cm ring-focus antenna. Although small the antenna is still built to Sea Tel's exacting standards for vibration, shock and EMC. The antenna efficiency is better than 70% across the transmit and receive bands and is ideal for vessels that require “always-on” broadband satellite communications.

All communication is handled rapidly and effectively by a GPRS or 3G / HSPA capable unit.In areas without network coverage, position-data and events are stored in memory ( up to 50,000 positions ). As soon as communication is restored, all information can be transmitted. MultiTrack also features duress or breakdown alarms together with mobile Group messaging capability.
