Past forward Just get over the past. How many times have you heard that? How many times have you heard someone say we as South Africans must simply get over our chequered past? And yet, try as you may, it is never that easy.
Now, don’t get me wrong. There is no need to open old wounds, but it is in history that you can find the reasons for today’s socially acceptable norms. Rather than point an accusatory finger as to how it went so wrong back then, it would be wise to study the records to create a more equal and balanced society.
For example, look at the game of golf. For centuries, many golf clubs maligned the fairer sex in the United Kingdom. Given that the English introduced us to the game, it is no surprise that a similar approach was adopted here. But that is fast changing as clubs realise that their alpha male approach is doing little to encourage active participation in the game. Read more on page 88.
It’s the same approach that needs to be encouraged in the mining sector to allow more diversity among those who control the purse strings. And while there will be many pressing issues to be discussed at this year’s Investing in African Mining Indaba, perhaps the starting point should be a snapshot diagnosis of the past in order to address the current turbulence in that sector.

Aquatic dinosaur species uncovered A 72-million-year-old fossil of a mosasaur, an extinct group of large marine reptiles, was recently unearthed in Japan. The fossil is said to be of an aquatic dinosaur with large owl-like eyes positioned in front of its head to give it binocular vision.
Researchers from the University of Cincinnati have named the mosasaur species Phosphorosaurus ponpetelegans. Scientists are hoping that the fossil will assist in filling a gap in the mosasaur distribution between the Middle East and the eastern Pacific. Most mosasaurs had eyes on the sides of their head, but this fossil had its eyes positioned on top of its head. This likely made it a better hunter when it came to catching fast-swimming prey. The new mosasaur had very large eye sockets, which could have increased the number of photoreceptors in its eye. This means that it could see very well at night.

New research into ‘moody teenagers’ You can put badly behaved and aggressive teenagers down to upbringing, but recent findings have suggested that a lack of grey matter in the brain could be the cause as well.
A study conducted at the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, investigated behavioural problems in teenagers. A portion of the brain is responsible for empathic responses, decision-making, reading facial expressions and emotion regulation. Teenagers and young adults who behave antisocially and aggressively appear to be deficient in this
a sign of inventiveness and creativity as well as abstract thinking. Research also shows that the brain has to work harder to process a snarky remark, ultimately leading to sarcastic people having sharper brains. Sarcasm also plays a role in social survival skills. Sarcasm is part of human behaviour, so the more you can identify with it, the better.

3D video games help combat memory lossA recent study published in The Journal of Neuroscience believes that 3D video games can be used to fight off memory loss and dementia that comes with age.
Student volunteers played the game Super Mario 3D World and later proved to have a 12% increased performance in a series of memory tests that took place afterwards.
Playing a 2D game, such as Angry Birds, did not have the same beneficial effect. This is because 3D games supposedly stimulate the hippocampus, a brain region that is vital to memory but shrinks with age.

part of the brain. Lead study author Dr Stephane De Brito says, “We know that severe behavioural problems in youths are not only predictive of antisocial and aggressive behaviour in adulthood, but also substance misuse, mental health problems and poor physical health.” As the study advances, scientists hope to have a better understanding of the regions of the brain associated with aggressive and antisocial behaviour, but there are still a number of unanswered questions for now.

Sarcasm makes you a better person Sarcasm can be a quick ticket to being misunderstood, but it isn’t necessarily a bad personality trait.
There are lots of positives when it comes to having a sarcastic personality. Research shows that sarcasm is a reflection of cognitive function, meaning that it’s a sign of good brain health. Sarcasm helps you pick friends because these birds of a feather want to be surrounded by people who understand and appreciate their sense of humour. A recent study found that sarcastic comments are

Tourists could soon be sleeping with the fishesPlans for ‘Planet Ocean Underwater Hotel’ have been proposed and it could be built in the Florida Keys (USA). The luxury underwater hotel is designed to be 8.5m underwater and could cost guests as much as $6,000 (R90,000) per night.
Developers insist that this money will be going towards the restoration and maintenance of damaged coral reefs, as well as aquaculture solutions and technologies. The project has been in the development phase for two and a half years and is currently seeking funding. The plan is to have 12 rooms, each constructed from thick, double-welded steel and see-through acrylic. Sound bizarre? Managing director Tony Webb says there have already been over 200 enquiries about future reservations.

Turmeric reduces memory lossJulie Daniluk is a nutritionist and the author of Meals That Heal Inflammation.
Daniluk suffered from arthritis, bursitis and colitis, which are all conditions that cause painful inflammation. She thanks a few dietary changes and the spice turmeric for pushing her symptoms into remission. Turmeric contains an antioxidant called curcumin, which lowers the levels of enzymes in the body that are responsible for inflammation. Turmeric has also proven to reduce memory loss. Daniluk believes that any person who is suffering from inflammation or who wants to prevent memory loss should add turmeric to their food.

Adidas hopes that its new technology will speed up the manufacturing process and reduce freight costs, ultimately making the shoes cheaper by producing a custom-made running shoe from scratch,
using a stitching machine and foamer. An advance in technology means that millions of jobs in the footwear industry are under threat. Rising wage costs, particularly in China, are also said to be motivating the shift towards robotic manufacturing. Robots could soon cut labour costs by 18% or more by the year 2025.

Cats are attention seekersCats have a notorious reputation for always wanting to knock things over.
Specialists say that this is an attention-seeking strategy. “Cats use us and this is just a way of them getting what they want, which is probably to be fed, or it could be their way of telling us they’re ill,” says Dr Eric Dougherty of The Cat Practice in New York, USA.
When cats hunt, they go after small, fast prey that they see racing across the ground. This is why they tend to knock over small objects that might go whizzing across the floor afterwards. It is merely an instinctual behavioural characteristic and should not be put down to destruction. It’s not only domestic cats who present this behaviour. Lions and other feline species also display the habit of trying to play with or knock over small objects.

MRI scan could spot aggressive tumours A new development in cancer scans could help doctors identify aggressive tumours before they get the chance to spread.
Until now, doctors have been unable to accurately differentiate between tumours that are stable and tumours that are likely to spread. A new system, developed by experts at the Institute of Cancer Research in London, uses existing MRI scanners to highlight tumours that are growing new blood vessels by scanning for areas in tumours that are low in oxygen. Doctors hope it will help them stop dangerous tumours before they spread throughout the body, since a lack of oxygen is an early sign of aggressive cancer.

Skydiver gets tattoo in the airA Canadian tattoo artist, who goes by the name INK-credibly, recently completed a tattoo on his friend during a skydive, while falling to the ground at a speed of approximately 193km/h.
Shannon Claydon managed to tattoo the letters ‘AHHH’ onto fellow diver Nadine Elaine. The outline was drawn on Elaine’s wrist before the jump. During the fall, Claydon used a portable tattoo gun and kept a very steady hand, while also being held steady by other skydivers, and managed to complete the tattoo in less than 30 seconds.

|Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park: The rugged landscape and diversity of arid plant species are
undoubtedly the biggest attractions of the Richtersveld. Additionally,
there is the challenge of the ‘off-road’ driving, the seclusion of the
wilderness camps and the contrast between the Orange River and its
surrounds. Fly fishing and river rafting are very popular activities
here. There is a four-day guided canoe adventure from the Namibian
side of the park, and also on the Namibian side of the Fish River
Canyon is the always popular /Ai /Ais hot springs. For those fit enough, you
can enjoy the five-day Fish River Canyon hiking trail.
Accommodation: Wilderness camps, river-facing chalets and campsites.
Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park: The large mammals, especially the
predators, are always a major drawcard at Kgalagadi. There are
majestic gemsbok, massive herds of wildebeest, graceful giraffe, hyaena,
foxes, springbok and many others. Smaller animals, such as the
mischievous suricates, ground squirrels (shading themselves with
their tails), whistling rats, luminous blue-headed ground agama and
barking geckos are also very popular in the park. Put all of these wonderful creatures among endless waves of red dunes and dry riverbeds with majestic
camelthorn and shepherd trees and you have the magic that is the
Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.Accommodation: A tented camp,
wilderness camps, rest camps and campsites.
Augrabies Falls National Park: The 56m-high main falls that cascade into the granite abyss of the Orange River Gorge are unmistakably the top attraction here. Easily accessed through an extensive network of boardwalks (some are wheelchair friendly) the falls are now illuminated at night. Few sights are as awesome or sound as deafening as water thundering down the Augrabies Waterfall when the Orange River is in full flood. Take time to explore the rest of the park by driving to scenic viewpoints with descriptive names of this rocky region like Moon Rock, Ararat and Echo Corner. Although not prolific, giraffe, klipspringer and Hartmann’s mountain zebra can be seen scattered across the park.Accommodation: Family chalets, a gorge cottage and campsites.
Namaqua National Park: The park is still in a development phase, but has a lot to offer its visitors. During July, August and September, seemingly overnight, the dusty valleys of Namaqualand are transformed into a wonderland carpeted with wildflowers. Every turn in the road paints an unforgettable picture: valleys filled with Namaqualand daisies and other spring flowers that pulse with sheer energy and joy. The pristine coastline from the Groen River mouth to the Spoeg River mouth is a fairly recent and valuable addition to Namaqua Park.Accommodation: Four chalets, rustic campsites and a cottage hidden in the mountains, and seasonal luxury tented camps.
Mokala National Park: Mokala is SANParks’ newest park. It is situated approximately 70km south-southwest of Kimberley. Nestled in the hills, Mokala’s landscape boasts a variety of koppieveld (hills) and large open plains. The isolated dolerite hills give the place a calming feeling of seclusion. A big surprise awaits you when you pass through the hills and are confronted by the large open sandy plains towards the north and west of the park. Drainage lines from the hills form little tributaries that run into the plains and drain into the Riet River. Mokala is an important area for the regeneration of valuable species and is home to, among other species, black rhino, white rhino, buffalo, tsessebe, roan antelope, sable antelope, giraffe, gemsbok, eland, zebra, red hartebeest, blue wildebeest, black wildebeest, kudu, ostrich, steenbok, duiker and springbok.Accommodation: Family chalets, luxury chalets and campsites.

In South Africa, brown beach sand is generally made up of quartz and shell fragments. Black beach sand is made up of heavy minerals: ilmenite, rutile and zircon. These are common minerals found all over the world, though not often in economic concentrations. One exception is in an area of northern KwaZulu-Natal on the Zululand coast, where Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) was formed 40 years ago.
The heavy minerals mined by RBM were carried by river from inland to the sea over millions of years. They were deposited on the shoreline through wave action, and then blown into the dunes by onshore winds. The waves and winds concentrated the minerals, making it economically feasible to collect them.
Today, RBM produces approximately two million tonnes of product annually, comprising 25% of the world’s titania slag and rutile, and a third of the world’s zircon. At any one time, no fewer than 20 large ocean-going vessels are either at anchorage or on the high seas, transporting RBM’s products to markets across the globe.
The mining processThe low-clay Richards Bay sands suit a wet-mining process. Artificial freshwater ponds are created in the
dunes several kilometres from the shoreline. On each pond floats one or more dredgers and a concentrator plant. The dredger burrows into the face of a dune, advancing at a rate of a few metres a day. The sand face collapses into the pond, and is sucked up and pumped into the concentrator plant. There the heavy minerals (about 3% of the dunes) are separated from the sand through a series of gravity separators. The sand is pumped out behind the plant to reform the dune for rehabilitation, and the valuable heavy mineral concentrate is deposited next to each pond for transportation to the mineral separation plant.
What it becomesThe three individual minerals – ilmenite, zircon and rutile – are separated using their various magnetic and electrical properties. These minerals are then further refined on the smelter complex, resulting in the following end products:
Titanium dioxideThis is used to create a pure white, highly refractive, ultraviolet-light-absorbing pigment. The pigment is non-toxic and biologically inert, and is used safely in

products annually
when you go to the beach, have you ever noticed black patches
and streaks in the sand? Often mistaken for oil, those streaks actually indicate the presence of valuable minerals. Those minerals will eventually find their way into artificial hip joints, computer screens, your car’s brakes, and even your toothpaste.

products such as foods, toothpaste, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, as well as in paint, plastics, textiles and inks.
High-purity pig ironThis is used as a raw material in foundries for the production of ductile iron castings. Ductile iron is used extensively throughout the world for the production of safety-critical automotive parts, such as brake calipers and steering knuckles in cars and trucks.
RutileThis is used in welding rod fluxes, or processed into its titanium metal form. It is used extensively in the aerospace and aviation industries because of its lightness, strength, corrosion and heat resistance. These properties also make it ideal for use in artificial hip joints and pacemakers.
ZirconThis is used in the production of ceramic tiles and sanitary ware. Refined to zirconia, it is used in a wide range of advanced ceramics, jewellery and electronic applications, including television screens and computer monitors.
Environmental managementThe minerals that RBM mines are biologically inactive and their extraction therefore has little or no impact on forest regeneration. RBM’s mining of sand dunes has been followed by a rehabilitation programme since its inception.
After they’ve been processed, dunes are reshaped to mimic their pre-mining topography. Topsoil retrieved from in front of the mining face (and containing the seed and organic matter of the indigenous forests) is spread over the reshaped dunes and enriched with fast-growing annuals to begin biological processes and protect the topsoil from wind and water erosion. Assisted by periodic windbreaks, these annuals soon take root, greening and maximising the dunes.
The rehabilitation of dunes is not RBM’s only environmental concern. Water use, energy use, air quality and waste levels are carefully monitored and managed. Technological advances and innovative systems have been successfully exploited to reduce consumption and to maximise the reuse of resources.
RBM places a strong emphasis on giving back to the local community through various sustainability and community upliftment initiatives
Local economic developmentThe development of local suppliers and host community enterprises ensures that the
benefits of RBM’s mining activities are directed to its host communities and contribute
to their sustainability beyond the duration of its operations. Activities include a focus
on local procurement, local employment, skills development and corporate social
investment.

Africa’s growing population and its demand for commodities and energy is a positive underlying factor that will promote future economic growth as soon as global conditions improve. However, it will require mining companies to plan now, while investing in skills and technology to improve operational efficiencies and to meet growing challenges such as energy supply and water quality.
In a recent report by McKinsey & Company, it is argued that declining ore quality and the limited accessibility of new deposits will squeeze mineral supply between now and 2020, potentially driving a commodity-price rebound as global demand continues to rise.
The commodities likely to be the most severely affected by ore quality decline are copper, gold and phosphate rock. Experts expect the level of geological cost inflation will continue to be the main determinant of cost increase, and that total inflation will average 4 to 7% per year going forward.
Cashing inNow, while the commodity cycle is in a general
downturn, there are many commodities that could see a change in fortunes in the not-too-
distant future – catching many companies ill-prepared.
There is not enough time to bring a medium-sized mine on-stream
and still benefit optimally from a buoyant market. Starting a modest
mine – even after establishing the existence of a payable
orebody – could take five years or more, with all

the technical studies and regulatory authorisations that must be completed.
South Africa’s mining sector missed out on the last commodity boom due to mineral policy uncertainty and to companies’ reticence to commit to projects early enough. No doubt, it has been a difficult period for most mining companies, and cutting costs has been the order of the day. However, shareholders are soon going to be asking where their future returns are going to come from, and exactly what plans have been put in place to build their business up again.
Waiting until recovery is on the doorstep has the danger of placing undue time pressure on the process of planning and building a mine. Indeed, the reasons for low returns on capital witnessed in the sector include the purchasing of assets in a rising-price environment and the attempt to accelerate projects to take advantage of price-cycle peaks. This is exacerbated by the limited availability of competent project staff, as well as the higher turnover of staff, experienced at these times.
It is imperative that mining companies take a strategic long-term view of their business, so they can invest timeously in well-researched studies and methodical implementation. They need to plan for how best to survive the downturns – while also considering how to invest in the future even when revenue is down. Africa is resource-rich and has much to offer the global economy, so the productive capacity of our mining sector must be preserved for better times.
Neither will it be business as usual. There are growing
risks to mining projects – from tightening environmental regulations to more mobilised communities – which could frequently lengthen lead-times and complicate the planning process.
Weather watchLeveraging technology will be imperative – not just to make mining more efficient, but to reduce pollution, conserve water and generate electricity sustainably in remote locations.
With climate change increasingly on the global agenda, mines will need to become more carbon-efficient, and more electricity could be generated from renewable sources. As the population in Africa increases and living standards rise, competition for water in certain areas will also increase between mines and communities.
Mines today are called upon to observe the highest levels of regulatory compliance and technical performance, but at the same time they must build robust relationships with stakeholders so they can maintain their social licence to operate – as this has become the most fundamental risk to mining everywhere.
Addressing the risk to their social licence is not just an issue of compliance and high technical standards for mines, but requires management to work closely with communities, local government and other stakeholders to define roles and build local economies.

Currently, water is a particularly pressing issue that the sector cannot afford to neglect. It took more than one entity to create this water crisis and it will take multiple entities working together to rectify it. No price can be placed on the consequences of when people cannot access clean and drinkable water to survive. By the same token, mining companies can also not function without water. For mining, a water shortage issue can lead to delays caused by community opposition to mining projects, production losses, additional capital expenditures, and damage to the corporate reputation of mining companies.
The increase in water-management costs is outstripping gains in mining output. The UK-based Global Water Intelligence (GWI) has assessed that while mines spent 252% more on water infrastructure in 2013 than in 2009, their production increased by just 20 to 52% over the same period. Projections for 2014
anticipated an estimated $13.6 billion of expenditure in mining-related water infrastructure, almost doubling the 2011 global spend.
A trusted partnership is needed The efficient use of resources can reduce costs and increase profitability for mining companies while benefitting the communities it affects. Even though mining companies invest in water infrastructure to provide for their own mines as well as the community, they are not in the business of managing it. Government or utility companies need to take on this responsibility so that there is transparency in usage and certainty that all parties – communities and mines – have access to water. A 2014 policy paper by the Columbia Centre on Sustainable Investment (CCSI) explored the benefits and outcomes of shared use of water-related infrastructure. The following case studies featured in the paper outline as successful collaborative partnerships in building sustainable water infrastructure systems for both mines and communities.
Tanzania In 2012, AngloGold Ashanti’s Geita gold mine partnered with the Tanzanian government to finance the Geita Town Water Project. The construction of a water supply system included a treatment plant and a pipeline to transport water to support mine operations and to provide clean water to more than 150,000 residents located around Geita.
Namibia Areva, a French mining and energy corporation, when planning its Trekkopje uranium mine in Namibia, included a desalination plant. The plant

The expected operational life of the desalination plant is longer than the anticipated life of the mine; NamWater (the state-owned national water supplier) will take over the plant after the mine closes.
South Africa The Witbank coalfields, located around the city
of eMalahleni, contain many mines. eMalahleni struggles to meet the water demand of its expanding population. To address potential water shortage and contamination, Anglo American’s Anglo Coal division partnered with BHP Billiton and the eMalahleni local municipality to build the eMalahleni Water Reclamation Project (EWRP) in 2007. The plant is owned and operated by Anglo American, but it also treats BHP’s water on a right-of-use basis. The water-reclamation plant currently supplies around 12% of the city’s water, decreasing the percentage of people without drinking water from 14% to 2%.
Lessons learnedThe mining industry, by its very nature, presents both challenges and opportunities for the communities in which it operates. The appropriate geological structures for mining tend to be located in water-stressed regions and further exacerbate water shortage issues. Some mines are taking the proactive approach and incorporating technology associated with more efficient water consumption and recycling. Similarly they are partnering with local governments and communities to invest and share in an effective water infrastructure system that offers increasingly beneficial outcomes for both mines and communities. The highlighted case studies exemplify wise water solutions, the importance of collaboration among stakeholders – industry, government and community – and the potential to ensure a sustainable water supply for the mine and the community long after the mine closes. It is this long-term sustainability, beyond the life of the mine, that is most critical.
More than shop talk Each year the Mining Indaba offers a forum dedicated to sustainability on the final day of the conference. This year it will go beyond this with a series of additional sessions and networking round tables incorporated into the proceedings. The Sustainable Development agenda will include a series of interactive discussions on the most critical social and economic issues facing both mining companies and communities.
All Sustainable Development sessions and discussions will centre around stakeholder engagement, creating opportunities for communities beyond the life of the mine, the role of innovation and technology development and the greater value that is being placed on making the right investments.

we have all been a victim of bad
customer service. It may be nothing new, but it is bad news for an organisation’s bottom line. A new international study by United States-based company VitalSmarts has revealed that the average employee witnesses 19 incidents of customer abuse per year.* These incidents combined result in a 17% drop in revenue annually per customer.
Very few employees report incidents of bad service, costing the company an average of $54,511 per year. The study found that in most organisations only 7% of employees can be counted on to speak up – despite the fact that 66% said they are capable of helping to solve the customer’s problem.
Crisis of silenceIn organisations with a weak cultural operating system, employees who see problems say nothing because they assume they do not have the power or authority to raise a concern. Time, resources and morale are wasted through an unwritten rule that accountability is someone else’s job.
In most organisations a culture of collusion prevails – one where individuals see problems but say nothing, assuming someone ‘higher up’ will deal with it. In doing so, they unwittingly collude in undermining results.
The major issue facing organisations is that people do not hold one another accountable for their actions. There is a ‘crisis of silence’ in the corporate world. This lack of accountability is having a devastating effect on organisations. The good news is the study has shown that organisations can recoup their losses by creating a culture in which employees feel empowered to speak up and confront incidents of poor service.
The study revealed that 75% of business-to-consumer customers say that poor service negatively affects the business they do with a company by 50% or more versus 42% of business-to-business customers.
Another interesting result was that the lack of customer service is also an issue of motivation rather than ability. Two-thirds of respondents say that they can resolve the customer’s problem well enough to avoid any loss of business, but they do not speak up. It is therefore clear that the crisis of silence is not so much a lack of ability but rather a lack of motivation.
79077 Skyways 275x106.indd 1 2015/12/14 4:51 PM
To contest this crisis of silence, management must address the issue of silence with employees and share examples of not speaking up and the consequences thereof. It is important to provide teams with positive anecdotes and highlight the opportunities for the business.
Unfortunately, poor customer service will always continue at some level. Below are some tips to help employees to respectfully and effectively speak up when they observe an incident with a colleague.
• Talk face-to-face – if possible, speak to the person and do so privately.
• Assume the best of others – it is possible that the person is unaware of what they are doing. Therefore, begin the conversation as a curious friend.
• Talk tentatively – begin by describing the problem with, “I’m not sure you intended this …” or “I’m not sure you’re aware of this …”
• Start with the facts – not only are conclusions possibly wrong, but they also create defensiveness. Share the facts first. Say something like, “When
that customer said they disagreed with you, you said …”
• Ask for others’ views – ask if they saw the issue differently: “Is that what you intended to say?”
• Use equal treatment – this applies to everyone, regardless of title or position. People deserve to be treated with respect.
A company’s culture is one of the most important factors that regulate individual performance; research has shown that the best-performing company cultures hold accountability conversations. Successful organisations are dependent on management creating a culture where anyone can hold anyone else accountable – managers to employees, employees to managers and peers to peers. The core value in this culture is not power but results.

In fact, the labour law meaning of ‘probation’ is ‘testing the employee’s work performance’. That is, the only legitimate purpose of a probationary period is for the employer to assess the suitability of the employee in terms of his or her work performance.
A probationary employee is one who has a conditional employment contract (written or unwritten). That is, the continuation of the contract is conditional on whether the employee’s work performance during the probationary period shows that he or she is or is not able to carry out the work properly. While this describes
the purpose of the probationary period, it does not mean that the employer has a free licence to fire the probationer if the employer believes the employee’s performance to be unsatisfactory.
On the contrary, the employer who places an employee on probation has a number of legal obligations, including making it clear that the employee is on probation. The employer must clarify the length of the probation period and set reasonable performance standards. It is the company’s duty to explain to the employee the performance standards required. There also needs to be
misunderstanding of the purpose and legal meaning of ‘probation’ causes employers and employees serious problems.
Probation is incorrectly believed to be a licence to fire the probationary employee when the employer wants to make space for another prospective employee, or because the employee ‘does not fit in’.

regular evaluation and monitoring of the employee’s performance against the set performance standards.
Furthermore, the employer must inform the employee of performance shortcomings and issue warnings to the employee where he or she is failing to meet the required standards. When dismissing the probationer, the employer must give him or her an opportunity to state his or her case.
The employer is allowed to extend the employee’s probation period in order to further assess the employee’s performance. This might occur, for example, where the employee shows promise but has made some errors or the opportunity for evaluation has been reduced during the initial probation period.
However, before extending the probation period, the employer is required to give the employee the opportunity to make representations regarding the proposed extension.
The letter of the lawThe Labour Relations Act (LRA) does not mention the employer’s right to use probation for any purpose other than that described in this article. In fact, the LRA prohibits the use of probation for any other purpose.
For example, in the case of Msomi vs Protea Security Services in 2004, the employee was promoted from Security Guard to Reliever Inspector. He was later demoted for having been involved in two vehicle accidents in the space of 10 days. The employer justified the demotion on the grounds of the employee’s negligence and the fact that the employee’s promotion had been probationary. The employee challenged this as an unfair labour practice and the CCMA found that the law does not allow for probation of a person already in the employer’s employ. It allows only for probation of new employees.
The CCMA also stated that if the employer wished to demote the employee, he should first have been counselled or given the opportunity to state his case. As such, the demotion was therefore unfair and the employer had to pay the employee seven months’ remuneration in compensation for the unfair demotion.
Probation can be a very useful tool for the employer, but must only be used after the employer has utilised labour law expertise in designing a probationary policy and procedure and setting realistic performance standards.

Planning for retirement can be very difficult without having the proper consulting in place. Those who are going into retirement without a plan are in for a rude awakening, and may find themselves having to go through a huge change in quality of life if they did not conduct proper planning before retirement.
There are a few things that need to be taken into account when planning for retirement. This include what your streams of income are going to be, whether or not you are going to look into financial planning services to help you through retirement, and also how you can improve your budgeting skills which are going to become infinitely more important when your streams of income are limited during retirement.
Streams of incomeThe best thing that you can do to ensure that your retirement is as comfortable as possible is to look into how you can create additional streams of income through the investments that you make prior to retirement. Since retirement signals that your main stream of income, the job that you had prior to retirement, is coming to an end, it is vitally important that you are able to produce other streams of income that can allow you to keep the same quality of life. The investments that you make prior to retirement can help you to maintain comfort after retirement, and improve your overall wealth management.
Financial planningConsult a Wealth Management Services and Retirement Planning expert that can help you to better manage your finances when your streams of income are limited during retirement. Most individuals go into retirement with a set income, through the retirement funds that they have and
any streams of income that are provided by investments. It is in your best interest to try to plan in-depth, and plan early, with the help of a financial planning professional, in order to ensure that you are in the best possible position come retirement.
Budgeting skillsBecause your income is going to be limited during retirement, you want to make sure that you sharpen your budgeting skills prior to retiring. It will be vitally important that you have the skills to properly manage money and not overspend, in order to ensure that your retirement funds last as long as possible, and are able to provide you with the quality of life that you are accustomed to. Budgeting skills are something that you can learn on your own, but with the help of financial and retirement planning services, you can apply the use of tools and other strategies to help you improve your budgeting skills, and ensure that the funds that you have for retirement stretch as far as possible.

The golden yearsEnsuring financial security during retirement
Money ‘makes the world go round’ and one of the most difficult propositions in life is to manage money. While some are born with great financial acumen, others need to be methodical and follow sound advice. Here are a few basic tips:
1Inculcate frugality within you. Resist the temptation to spend now and save later. Every
rand earned must be divided into four parts: one part to meet essential expenses; one part to be invested in short-term savings; one part for retirement savings; and one part for emergency expenses.
2 Create, with the help of expert advice, an infallible financial plan. Plan your credit
report, taxes and expenses. Keep watch and learn how to regulate yourself.
3 Avoid the debt trap set by credit card companies and the easy availability of loans.
Only spend what you have in hand and not any monies in advance.
4 Learn the art of investment. The World Wide Web is a reliable resource for information,
reviews and guidelines on investments, but it is advisable to still seek expert advice. The idea is to balance investments into sure-fire investments, medium-risk investments and high-risk investments.
5 Make wise decisions when buying a home, office, and more. Property can be a good
investment when bought after deep thought and in a location where the appreciation is high.
6 Teach every family member how to invest and the secret of handling money wisely.
Even children need to learn from a young age.
7 Insure your interests. Take out enough insurance but learn the art of saving on
premiums, clubbing policies and umbrella
policies. Know how to save money every step of the way.
8 Spend prudently. Plan your luxuries and eating out. Learn how to shop sensibly and
do not indulge.
9 Avoid lending or borrowing money. Financial matters are best handled alone and not
through family or friends.
10 Review your financial plan regularly and make the necessary adjustments. As a
family grows, change is needed. Begin saving for college and higher education from early on, teach your children to never take you for granted, and discuss money matters with your family members. Keep abreast of money management, taxation, insurance and property laws. Plan for retirement and secure your future.

With the financial aid of a biotechnology executive whose daughter may need a lung transplant, researchers have been shattering records in xenotransplantation, or between-species organ transplants.
The researchers say they kept a pig heart alive in a baboon for 945 days and also report the longest-ever kidney swap between the two species, lasting 136 days. The experiments used organs from pigs 'humanised' with the addition of as many as five human genes, a strategy that is designed to stop a primate’s body from rejecting the pig organs.
The GM pigs are being produced in Blacksburg, Virginia, by Revivicor, a division of the biotechnology company United Therapeutics. That company’s founder and co-CEO, Martine Rothblatt, is a noted futurist, and one of her daughters has a usually fatal lung condition called pulmonary arterial hypertension. Rothblatt began spending millions to supply researchers with pig organs four years ago and has quickly become the largest commercial backer of xenotransplantation research. She says her goal is to create “an unlimited supply of transplantable organs” and to carry out the first successful pig-to-human lung transplant within a few years. In addition to GM pigs, her company is researching tissue-engineered lungs and cryopreservation of organs. “We’re turning xenotransplantation from what looked like a kind of Apollo-level problem into just an engineering task,” she says.
Thousands of people die each year while waiting on transplant lists. Donated human organs are scarce, and because a heart or kidney lasts only a matter of

hours packed in ice, many available organs can only reach the closest patients.
“We want to make organs come off the assembly line, a dozen per day,” Rothblatt says. In 2011 her company paid about $8 million to take over Revivicor, and she has outlined plans for a facility able to breed 1,000 pigs a year, complete with a surgical theater and a helipad so organs can be whisked where they are needed.
The problem with xenotransplantation is that animal organs set off a ferocious immune response. Even powerful drugs to block the immune attack can’t entirely stop it. In a famous 1984 case, a California newborn known as 'Baby Fae' received a baboon heart. But it lasted only three weeks before failing. The human body reacts even more strongly to pig tissue, since pigs are genetically more distant. All human tests of pig organs have ended quickly, and badly.
Researchers continue to work with pigs because they’re in ready supply, and the organs of young pigs are about the right size. In order to beat the rejection problem, researchers began trying to genetically modify the animals. One major step came in 2003 when David Ayares, a cofounder of Revivicor, created pigs whose organs lacked a sugar molecule that normally lines their blood vessels. That molecule was the major culprit behind what’s called hyperacute rejection, which had almost instantaneously destroyed transplanted pig organs.
Removing the sugar molecule helped. But it wasn’t enough. Tests in monkeys showed that other forms of organ rejection still damaged the pig tissue, albeit more slowly. To combat these effects, Ayares’s team has made pigs with more and more human genes. “We are adding the human genes to the pig so you have the organ repressing the immune response, rather than have to give a whopping dose of immune suppressants,” says Ayares. By next year, some of the pigs will have as many as eight human genes. These genetic changes make their organs more compatible with a human body, but the animals still look and act like normal pigs.
Surgeons credit the genetically enhanced pigs with some recent successes. Muhammad Mohiuddin, a transplant surgeon and researcher at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, in Bethesda, Maryland, says a heart from one of Revivicor’s pigs
A biotech company is genetically engineering pigs so that their organs might work in humans.

lasted two and a half years inside a baboon. The pig heart was attached to the baboon’s circulatory system and was able to beat, but it didn’t have to do the work of pumping blood, since the baboon’s own heart remained in place. Mohiuddin says he’ll soon begin trying to replace baboon hearts entirely. The organs he used before had three genetic alterations, but the next ones will have seven.
Transplant surgeons say one of the largest obstacles they face is the immense cost of carrying out xenotransplant experiments. A single transplant surgery costs $100,000. Then there’s the cost of keeping the primates, the red tape of animal regulations, and limited government grants. That’s where Rothblatt’s personal interest and her fortune have made a difference, they say.

It’s a hard car to fault – so hard, in fact, that you have to resort to searching high and low for some sort of failing you can use to criticise the car. I’ve spent many, many hours behind the wheel of the pre-facelifted model and a couple more driving the new car, so here goes: The placement of the traction-control button and the digital
Next-generation RAV4 hits the roads
The Toyota RAV4 has always been an easy car to recommend to people, but the same can be said of a few other softroaders in the segment. To be fair, the RAV4 got there first when it kick-started the segment more than two decades ago, so there’s still a fair amount of loyalty at play, but that’s not the reason Toyota sells an average of 500 a month. No, the RAV4 sells so well because it is the best vehicle in a segment that’s bursting at the seams.
time | out
Plenty to RAV about clock needs to be relooked at. It looks out of place in what
is otherwise a lovely interior. The RAV4 is comfortable, quiet and equipped with
everything you could possibly want, across the whole range. The quality is good and the infotainment interface works like a charm. It’s also a safe car, with a host of active acronyms working hard to keep you on track, while the safety shell, airbags and safety belts will do their best to keep you alive if the worst does happen.
First impressionsThe car is as charming and delightful as it always was, so let’s move on to the exterior upgrades, which are extensive enough to actually notice. I can’t say I was fond of the way the pre-facelift model looked, but it wasn’t offensive either. The new one, however, is both elegant and eye-catching. This is one facelift that was definitely worth the effort.
In terms of model line-up, I only had the opportunity to sample the top-of-the-line 2.5ℓ petrol VX and the entry-level all-wheel-drive diesel derivative. The 2.5ℓ (132kW) engine and automatic gearbox combination is very good and easy to recommend to those who still believe petrol is best in this application, but I’d rather focus on the entry-level all-wheel-drive diesel GX manual.
The RAV4 was first introduced in Japan
and Europe way back in 1994
5402 16
The GX has all the equipment you need, with the VX trim only adding a few niceties you could easily live without. Inside, the GX specification includes power windows, remote central locking and auto door lock, manual climate control, an infotainment system with every connection imaginable, a retractable tonneau cover with net barrier, and rear park distance control.
The 2.2ℓ turbocharged diesel’s figures aren’t mind-blowing, but it feels more powerful than the claimed 110kW and 340Nm suggest. It’s also as reliable as one would expect from a Toyota, and reasonably frugal given its application.
What I love most about the RAV4 is its ability to tackle off-road obstacles that would leave most of its competitors dead in their tracks. It has just the right amount of ground clearance and an all-wheel-drive system that’s more than competent enough to keep you going.
You can lock the centre differential to distribute the power equally between the front and rear axles, but it only works at speeds of up to 40km/h. At certain points on our sandy route in Mozambique I exceeded 40km/h
and the vehicle would just revert back to doing its own thing. This left me stabbing at the button every few minutes, until I eventually let the car have its way.
As it turned out, the RAV4 is very capable and smart enough to cope with soft sand, which makes it okay in my book. Unlike some other softroaders, the RAV4 allows you to override both the traction control and stability control, which means the power is never cut unnecessarily at a time when you need it most.
VerdictPricing starts at R327,700 for the petrol-powered and manual-shifting 2ℓ GX and goes up to R487,400 for a top-spec VX diesel automatic.
The sweet spot is the mid-grade 2.2D GX MT, retailing for R409,900. At that price it’s cheaper than most of its rivals, so it represents good value for money. Add reliability, comfort, luxury and off-road ability and it’s easy to see why the RAV4 is SA’s favourite mid-sized SUV.

Fleur Du Cap Unfiltered Chardonnay 2014Full-bodied and complex, the peach blossom and dried fruit notes linger effortlessly with the vanilla flavours derived from the wood. The wine will mature well for another two to three years and is a good accompaniment to delicately spiced chicken and fish dishes.
Lomond Sauvignon Blanc 2015The cool Agulhas climate delivers delicate flavours of tropical fruit, a hint of citrus and herbaceousness. Generous fruit, a crisp acidity and overall balance make this wine ideal to enjoy with a butternut and goat’s cheese salad, prawns or grilled fish.

To him it is the conversation such a wine ignites long before it has even been made, with everyone waiting in anticipation of the final product. Such a wine should tell a story of the unique properties of the vineyard, the handling of the grapes in the cellar and the special touch of the winemaker when crafting the final blend.

The ships may be oriented horizontally or vertically within the grid so that no ship touches another, not even diagonally. Any remaining squares in the grid contain water segments, which are shown as a symbol of water or as an X.
The numbers on the bottom and on the right of the grid show how many squares in the corresponding rows and columns are occupied by ships. The object is to discover where all six ships are located.

Tournament received his winning trophy in the rain outside the Durban Country Club. After beating 103 golfers to the coveted title, apartheid rules dictated that Sewsunker ‘Papwa’ Sewgolum, an Indian, could not enter the clubhouse. Photographs of the debacle made international headlines, forcing many countries to impose sanctions on the country.

Sewgolum faced similar prejudices throughout his career, eventually leading to the government banning him from travelling to ply his trade. In doing so, they robbed the world of arguably the greatest South African golfer to have played the game.
Coming from humble beginnings, Sewgolum was a self-taught golfer who played the game with a back-handed grip, hands positioned the opposite way to the traditional grip. The unorthodox grip has another name – the Sewsunker grip – because he used it with such success. Having no formal education, he found work as a caddie at Beachwood Country Club. It was there that a certain Graham Wulff discovered his remarkable talent and helped bring it to the world’s attention.
In 1959, Wulff accompanied Sewgolum on his first overseas tour. He achieved phenomenal success beyond South African borders, winning the Dutch Open three times. In 1965, he beat an in-form Gary Player to win his second Natal Open. His exploits as a non-white golfer were an embarrassment for the apartheid government. In 1966, they took away his passport and banned him from all local tournaments, leaving Sewgolum a defeated person. The humble legend died at the age of 48 in 1978.
The story of his life has been vividly captured in the book Papwa: Golf's Lost Legend by Maxine Case. Skyways spoke to Sewgolum’s son, Rajen Sewshanker, about the book and the remarkable story of a golfing great.
How was the author able to give such a graphic report of your father’s life?It was a collective effort. Case had met with the family and my dad’s friends to gather the information. My
mom is still alive and she has a wealth of knowledge about his life and his career. Also, a lot of the information was sourced for a 2005 documentary on my dad titled Papwa: The Lost Dream of a South African Golfing Legend. As such, the reader is able to experience each moment as my dad did.
What was it like growing up in a neighbourhood where everyone looked up to your dad?The truth is that when my dad was banned, it was crippling for him. He could never regain the form he displayed. By this time, we had been forcibly removed from our home in Riverside, Durban and moved to Chatsworth. He had never enjoyed the fame or fortune that came with being a champion.
Despite the adversities he faced on the golf course, your dad never lost his cool. What was he like at home? He was the same person in all social and professional circles. He never lost his cool and was always humble, despite his enormous talent.
Your mother never attended his tournaments. Why?She came from a very orthodox background and as such was very domesticated. Also, restrictions on people of colour meant that we were not allowed to watch him play at many tournaments.
Was your family angry at the way your dad seemingly vanished from the sporting world without being given the recognition he deserved when he was still alive? No. We felt no bitterness and neither did my dad. It is an indication of the way he brought us up. I know that my dad is listed among the greatest golfers of all time, and even greats such as Gary Player have acknowledged this.
A golf course has been named in his honour. What else has been done to honour his legacy? In 2004, he was posthumously awarded the Order of Ikhamanga by President Thabo Mbeki. The award is the highest honour for achievement in the performing arts and sport. He has also been inducted into the Golf Hall of Fame in Cape Town. We are in the process of raising finance to produce a movie about my dad.

Earlier this year, a report was issued by KPMG that analysed ratios of female participation in golf in the different European countries, and it was rather surprising to see how figures varied from country to country.
For starters, in Germany there are 222,581 women players, compared to only 94,138 in England. Even Sweden (123,410) and France (103,802) have more women playing the game than England, where there are considerably more golf courses: a total of 1,849. This means that there are, on average, only 50 women
members per golf club in England.Cause for alarm among the golf administrators in
the United Kingdom is the low ratio of women to men who play the game in Wales, Scotland and England. In the Netherlands, for example, a third of all golfers are women, and that figure is on the rise.
The KPMG study looks at three distinct groups – male, female and junior members – and it is interesting to see that in the less-developed golf markets, junior and female participation form a much higher proportion of the total membership numbers.
Changing accepted normsOne of the reasons for the higher male proportion in the likes of Britain (South Africa is not much different), is the long history of sexism. Golf has always been a patriarchal sport where the men call the shots. The Royal & Ancient hardly sets a good example. The mere fact that at the governing body’s head office, St Andrews,
A change in mindset needs to happen at

player of either sex to be ranked No. 1 in professional golf (17 years and 9 months)
recently, there have been increased efforts
to encourage females to play golf. And there are those who believe that larger female participation is key to the long-term health of the company.

Female golfers to the rescue
Joiningtheclub
women may not join – and there are still clubs in Britain (and the US) that doggedly refuse to admit female members – shows that old habits die hard.
One could name a number of South African golf clubs that have a history of only grudgingly accepting limited membership of the fairer sex. We cannot forget that we inherited our club system from the British, who after all brought the game to our country. Along with all that is good about the sport, we also bought into the management-by-committee system, and the idea that clubs should be ‘private’ and highly elitist.
Even when it became obvious that in many cases business models were becoming unsustainable, changes to the way clubs were run were slow to be implemented. Policies at clubs that marginalised women, even when it made business sense to encourage them to play the game, made little sense, and political correctness aside, the industry simply cannot afford to exclude half of the potential golfing population.
Figures supplied to GCM magazine by the Central Gauteng Golf Union show that there are 2,807 women members in the region, which constitutes a little more than 10% of the total. It is believed that this is a fair representation of the national average, which is well below what it should be.
It has become quite obvious that clubs that have shifted their focus towards the family, rather than the typical male member, have become more successful, and it is encouraging to see that a concerted effort has been made at certain clubs to welcome more women to the game.
Much is made of the fact that lifestyles of men and women have changed considerably over the last few decades, as more women have pursued careers, and the golf industry was certainly slow to react.
As the newly constituted Golf RSA administrative body swings into action, we would hope that one of its main goals will be to change the sexist image of golf, and encourage more female participation in the game at all levels.

The phrase ‘the show must go on’ originated in show business, and means that no matter which problems may arise, the show will continue in order not to disappoint the waiting audience. Later, the phrase evolved into something with a wider meaning, and came into use even outside of show business. It’s now generally applied to any event or activity – life goes on, no matter the obstacles. This background adds layers of meaning to the famous Queen song as it deals with a combination of show business and life coming to an end.
The Show Must Go On was the last song on Queen’s 1991 album Innuendo. At the time of its release the band members knew that vocalist Freddie Mercury had contracted Aids and was possibly near the end of his life; however, this information was not made
public yet. In fact, the band and producers wanted to release Innuendo in November or December 1990, but Mercury’s health was declining so badly that the release could only happen in February the following year. And sadly, Innuendo was the last studio album to be released by Queen in Mercury’s lifetime. Nine months after the album was released, Mercury passed away from bronchial pneumonia, unable to fight off the disease because of his Aids.
Defeating the obstaclesOn the album sleeve Queen is credited for The Show Must Go On, but Brian May played the biggest role in creating this power ballad. After listening to Queen guitarists John Deacon and Roger Taylor playing a chord sequence that would later on become the basis for the song, May sat down with Mercury and the two of them came up with the theme of the song and some of the lyrics. May completed the lyrics and the melody on his own. He also recorded demo versions in which he did the singing – he had to sing some parts in falsetto because they were too high.
The vocals were, in fact, very demanding, and when May presented the final demo to Mercury he told him: “Fred, I don’t know if this is going to be possible to

morbid as it may be, many of us have at some point thought about which
song we would like to have played at our funeral. In 2005 the digital TV channel Music Choice did a poll in which they asked 45,000 adults across Europe what their choice of funeral song would be. The Show Must Go On by Queen came out on top.
Final cutEven while facing death, Freddie Mercury was larger than life

sing.” He doubted whether Mercury would be physically capable of performing the song, considering the extent of his illness at the time. However, Mercury went on to demonstrate the exact meaning of the saying ‘the show must go on’. He took a shot of vodka, told May “I’ll do it, darling!” and went ahead to sing the vocals.
Those close to him were amazed by Mercury’s strength in the face of death. In the documentary Days of Our Lives, May commented, “He never moaned, he never said, ‘This is terrible, I hate it.’” Also, Jim Hutton, who was Mercury’s partner for the last six years until his death, remarked, “To me, the most autobiographical line in The Show Must Go On was ‘My make-up may be flaking but my smile still stays on.’ That was true. No matter how ill Freddie felt, he never grumbled to anyone or sought sympathy of any kind. It was his battle, no one else’s, and he always wore a brave face against the ever-increasing odds against him.”
Immortal in musicWhile the lyrics for The Show Must Go On don’t directly refer to living and dying, it is clear that Mercury is expressing coming to terms with his mortality, and at the same time expressing his will to live: “I have to find the will to carry on with the show.” But he didn’t have much
strength left. No new footage of Mercury was being shot anymore, thus a video for The Show Must Go On was created using old footage of the band’s performances and videos, cleverly edited to make sense as a whole.
The song was released as a single in the United Kingdom on 14 November 1991. It spent five weeks in the British charts. Six weeks after its release Mercury passed away, which saw the song re-enter the charts and stay there for another five weeks, peaking at number 16.
Mercury never got to perform the song live. It was first played live on 20 April 1992 during the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert, performed by the three remaining members of Queen. Elton John sang the lead vocals and Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi played rhythm guitar. In 1997 the song was once again performed with Elton John on guest vocals. This performance would be Deacon’s last performance with Queen and his last public performance, as he completely retired from music after that.
In a sense The Show Must Go On did become the ultimate ‘funeral song’ – announcing the end of both Mercury, and the legend that was Queen. Fortunately, music never dies, and their legacy will live on.

The number of years until South Africa is projected to deplete its gold reserves
The year-on-year decrease in mining production South Africa experienced as at January 2015
33 4.7%
1 Africa produces millions of carats of diamonds every year, about 65% of the global total. Within Africa,
Botswana is the largest producer. Worldwide, it is estimated that this booming industry supports 10 million people directly and indirectly.
2 Africa was not always a world leader in diamond mining. In the 1400s, India was the world’s main source of
diamonds. Around the 1700s, Brazil became the world’s major source of diamonds, until 1867, when the first diamond was discovered on the banks of the Orange River in South Africa.
3 Namibia and Niger are among the biggest producers of uranium in the world. Uranium is the principal fuel for
nuclear reactors, the main raw material for nuclear weapons, and the source of nuclear fuel, which provides around 14% of the world’s electricity.
4 The uses of the minerals and metals mined in Africa are extensive, affecting our daily lives in invaluable and often
unknown ways. A few of these include: golf bags, ink, deodorant (petroleum), the anticorrosive element in steel, purifying drinking water and treating waste water (manganese), spacesuit visors, medicine, electronics (gold), toothpaste (fluorite), and aeroplane parts (bauxite). The list goes on.
5 Africa’s mines aren’t just the source of many modern conveniences. Raymond Dumett wrote in the Journal of
African History (1985): “A wide range of African metallic and non-metallic ores played a vital – and in some cases an indispensable – role in the Allied victory in 1945.”
6 The sizes of Africa’s mines are incredible. The Western Deep gold mine in Gauteng is the world’s deepest gold
mine, plunging 3.9km into the ground. At the Moab Khotsong gold mine in North West Province, it takes four minutes to lower workers down 3,054m, with the world’s longest winding cable.
7 South Africa and Zimbabwe have the majority of the world’s platinum group metal (PGM) reserves. The
automotive industry has been the principal consumer of PGMs since the ‘70s.
8 Gold mining is Africa’s main mining resource, and two-thirds of it is mined in South Africa.
9 Tin, tantalum and tungsten (or the three Ts) are primarily mined in the Democratic Republic of Congo. They are
used in the manufacturing of electronic devices like laptops, smartphones and MP3 players. Most modern electronic devices contain more than 35 minerals.
10 The Democratic Republic of Congo is also the world’s largest producer of cobalt, with Zambia and South Africa
also featuring in the top 10. Cobalt is used in paint, medicine, alloys, magnets, cancer treatments, and to manufacture vitamin B12.

There I was, seated on the floor of a small aeroplane, strapped to a man I had met only a few hours before. A few minutes before take-off, I was glowing with confidence. Now, as we made our way up to 10,000ft, I began to wonder if agreeing to skydive was a good idea after all. But when you are tandem jumping you have no time for second guessing, and 30 minutes later, I had completed the jump.
However, the story begins the night before. As I visualised the experience, I pondered: who was the first person who decided that jumping out an
aeroplane was safe and a good idea? Did they have some sort of death wish?
Freefalling from 10,000ft is not the only example. Throughout the centuries, there have been those who dared to go where no one dared to venture before. From jumping off mountains in a wingsuit to driving rocket-fuelled cars at breakneck speeds, one can’t help but wonder whether such pioneers were raving lunatics or pure geniuses. I can’t decide which is the more fitting description.
What I do know is that it is those who pushed the envelope and are willing to risk it all in the name of progress who have made an ineradicable impression in this world. Such bravery and daringness should be encouraged in the name of progress. Even if it sounds absurd. After all, is there truly ever such a thing as a bad idea? If you never try, you will never know.
