Joy to the worldpg24

Time to reset African timeSometimes waiting for a critical decision to be made is like watching paint dry. Whether it’s government policy or a business decision, it has seemingly become an acceptable norm to only act when it’s crunch time. Some of us call it African time. The consequences of such delays can be dire, leading to lack of confidence in the system, frustration and demotivation.

That said, two recent news headlines prove that we are indeed capable of making swift decisions that result in a more positive mindset.

The first was the #feesmustfall student protest that gained rapid momentum, drawing comparisons to the 1976 Soweto uprising. Granted, the war has not been fully won by those demanding free tertiary education, but the government’s prompt decision not to increase tuition fees was a victory nonetheless.

During the same period, the country was shocked to hear of the brutal murder of eight family members in Hammanskraal. In what can only be lauded as swift justice, it took only eight days to bring the perpetrators to book and put them behind bars for the rest of their lives. This is a genuine indication that the wheels of justice can indeed turn faster, and with real conviction.

As the year draws to a close, South Africa is in the midst of a worsening drought. Already, livestock farmers have been advised to cut back on the numbers in their herds. It is bad news for them, but even worse news for consumers who will bear the brunt of it in the form of rising food prices.

So, just as authorities were able to act without delay when it came to tertiary education fees and delivering swift justice, now is the time to put plans in place to ensure that the effects of the drought are indeed manageable. By doing so, we can show the world that African time can run like clockwork.

Have a peaceful festive season and a prosperous start to the new year.

Mini Segway on the wayA Beijing robotics startup called Ninebot has recently acquired Segway and plans to release a smaller version of the motorised scooter.

The Ninebot Mini, as it is named, differs drastically from the original Segway design.

The scooter is approximately 60cm high and weighs around 12kg, making it easy to carry and store around the house. The Ninebot Mini features a knee-high handling stick instead of the Segway’s full-sized handle. It is able to reach speeds of up to 16km/h and cover a total of approximately 20km on a single charge. Its slow speed means that it’s best

projects in China and hopes to work closely with local suppliers and promote renewable energy.

The tech giant also plans to launch an initiative that encourages its local Chinese partners to use clean energy when manufacturing.

The newly announced 200 megawatt projects will produce enough energy to power 265,000 Chinese homes in a year. Apple also announced that it plans to build 400 megawatts of

solar energy projects by 2018. Apple believes its operations in China to be ‘carbon neutral’ as its solar installations produce more energy than is used in its offices and retail stores throughout the country. In 2012, the company was criticised by the environmental group, Greenpeace, for being too energy-hungry. After the recent announcements, Greenpeace has commended Apple for implementing solar energy projects.

Janitor throws out bubbly art exhibitionA team of hardworking Italian cleaners thought they were tidying up after a particularly wild opening party at Museion, Museum for Modern and Contemporary Art in Bolanzo, Italy.

The 300 empty champagne bottles, confetti and cigarette butts, however, were actually part of an installation by Milanese artists Goldschmied and Chiari.

The piece, titled Where Are We Going to Dance Tonight? was inspired by the Italy of the 1980s, “a period characterised by consumerism, hedonism by socialist politicians and their neverending parties,” according to the museum website. Apparently the work was a little too convincing. The museum's director, Letizia Ragaglia, told Italian newspaper Alto Adige that the cleaning staff had been warned not to disturb the artwork. “We told them just to clean the foyer because that's where the event on Friday night had been. Evidently, they mistook the installation for the foyer,” she lamented.

Can bananas cure AIDS?A key ingredient in bananas, called banana lectin, could kill off a range of viruses including hepatitis C, flu and AIDS.

Scientists hope that the new medicine could become a vital ‘broad spectrum anti-viral’ that could protect people from major diseases in the future.

Banana lectin, or ‘BanLec’, was first identified five years ago as a potential AIDS treatment, but it had side effects that scientists and researchers have now managed to overcome. BanLec works by clinging to sugar molecules found on the surface of deadly viruses. Once BanLec

has attached to the virus, it is rendered harmless. Eating bananas does not have the same effect; the ingredient has been modified to combat disease. The new form of BanLec has been named H84T. The drug has been tested on mice and experiments proved that it prevented them from getting the ‘flu. The new drug also worked on tissue and blood samples containing AIDS, hepatitis C and influenza. Researchers believe that the new drug may even be able to treat Ebola. Several years of research still lie ahead before the drug can be tested on humans, but scientists are optimistic about the results.

The teeth are sharp enough to pierce through wetsuit fabric which can pose a problem for divers. The snail will launch at a fish where it delivers a shot of toxins that attack the nervous system, leaving the fish paralysed. Cone snails constantly reproduce radulae. Mysterious disease behind starfish suicidesScientists are shocked by the epidemic of colourful starfish that are committing suicide along North America’s Pacific coast.

For the last two years the stunning phenomenon that’s been called ‘The Wasting’ had marine biologists intent on solving the mystery as to why millions of starfish were suddenly dying. According to Yahoo News, scientists recently discovered that starfish, also known as sea stars, are essentially devouring themselves along the coastline from Mexico to Alaska, thanks to a virus.

Sea star-associated densovirus (SSaDV), which has been identified within many

of the species that are dying, has been around for nearly 70 years. Scientists are searching for what is causing the infected starfish to die so suddenly. The virus causes white lesions to appear before the animal’s body sags, ruptures and spills out its internal organs.

Starfish are specifically known to regenerate their limbs in times of need. However, scientists say this epidemic is affecting them differently.

Songs by The Script and Swedish House Mafia also had a surprisingly beneficial effect on perceived levels of fatigue and endurance, a pioneering study at Hartpury College and University Centre in Gloucestershire revealed.

Researchers spent three months monitoring the physiological effects of different music types on British swimmer Ben Hooper, who is due to swim almost 3,500km across the Atlantic Ocean this month. The team then narrowed down each genre to specific artists and tracks in a bid to identify a ‘soundtrack of success’ – a list of songs that athletes should play or avoid for optimum results.

After monitoring his output over nearly 25,000 lengths at an indoor swimming pool in Cheltenham, and his sea training in Key West, Florida, the scientists were able to highlight the most stimulating tracks from an original playlist of almost 100 artists.

After listening to these tracks, Hooper’s perceived levels of effort and fatigue improved, with the athlete feeling less tired and more alert. Others had a negative impact on his performance. Bob Marley and other reggae artists, for instance, brought no noticeable improvement in speed, but required more effort during the laps, even when played loudly.

W e can’t win against nature. Although it is difficult to have accurate numbers, disease, drought and disasters have

probably caused more fatalities than mankind has. Smallpox alone, for example, claimed between 300 and 500 million victims in the 20th century. And that is just 1 disease. By comparison, WWI and WWII together cost the lives of between 50 and 150 million people. Drought and the plague decimated the European population regularly in the Middle Ages. Still, there are human inventions that come close. For example, smoking claims the lives of about 5 million people worldwide every year. There are about 650 million people worldwide who smoke at this moment, half of whom will die as a result of this habit.

SutherlandSutherland is in the heart of the Roggeveld region in the Karoo, and is home to its own unique architecture, with buildings incorporating the area’s distinctive grey stone. There are graveyards dating back to the Anglo-Boer War, including two gravestones for the same soldier. The town also boasts the youngest (inactive) volcano south of the equator, as well as rich findings of fossils.

Sutherland is not only famous for the depth of its history – this is the place to go if you want to see some of the most amazing night skies, unspoiled by light pollution. There are guesthouses aplenty for visitors, who would do well to spend a few days exploring this gem. Take your warm clothes though – it may be in a very dry area, but Sutherland is often noted on the weather report as the coldest place in South Africa during winter.

South Africa is blessed with some of the world’s most famous tourist attractions, from Durban’s beaches and Cape Town’s mountain to Johannesburg’s bustling hub of economic activity. However, if you’re looking for something a little less mainstream and a little more quirky, the country has an abundance of off-the-beaten-track, out-of-the-ordinary gems to add to your travel bucket list. Here’s a pick of nine of the best.

Gamkaskloof Marked by a lone signpost 15km from Prince Albert is the road to Gamkaskloof, best braved by owners of 4x4 vehicles who are comfortable to travel at 25km per hour. Access to this long and fertile valley is not for the faint-hearted, with treacherous mountain pass roads clinging to the hillsides. However, the remarkable scenery and unspoilt wildlife are the things of which pilgrimages are made, with Cape Nature Conservation managing bookings for camping and accommodation along the banks of the Gamka River.

Steeped in Anglo-Boer War history, the valley was originally discovered by trekboers who settled there – and then left, with just one of the original families (the Jouberts) remaining to tell tales of years gone by.

TonteldoosJust down the drag from popular Dullstroom in Mpumalanga, you’ll find Tonteldoos, a small hamlet that is home to the annual Tonteldoos Country Festival, held over the Easter weekend. The festival celebrates all things peach, from the fruit to peach mampoer, and also has a celebration of donkey carts and their riders. The village is home to several guesthouses that offer a year-round quiet getaway, as well as the Pendle Hill Country Estate, which makes its own organic cheeses using milk from its own herd of Jersey cows, who are milked to the strains of classical music. Cycling fans should look out for the annual Cullinan to Tonteldoos off-road experience.

HogsbackHogsback is located at the western end of the forested Amatola Mountains in the Eastern Cape, and is home to numerous artists, potters, painters and poets. With its lower reaches often blanketed in snow in winter, the village offers great locations for walking, mountain biking, bird watching, mountain climbing and trout fishing. Named for the three mountain peaks that look much like the wild hogs in the nearby forest, the area is also home to a wealth of bird life.

BethulieBethulie is just about spot-on in the middle of South Africa, but it is also in the middle of three game reserves: the Tussen-die-Riviere Game Reserve (between the Caledon and Orange rivers), the Oviston Nature Reserve and the Gariep Eco Reserve. Located in the Free State close to the Gariep Dam, Bethulie was originally a mission station set up by the London Missionary Society to convert the local San Bushmen, and the original mission station still stands.

Apart from game viewing, visitors can enjoy hiking, fishing, hunting, boating and sundowners on the Hennie Steyn Bridge, the longest railroad bridge in South Africa.

Prince AlbertHome to a wealth of artists and craftspeople, Prince Albert in the Karoo is fast becoming a food, culture and wine destination. More than 250 years old, the town is home to several ghosts, with visitors able to take a guided ghost walk through the town to see who they can spot.

The town has its own unique architecture, and still uses a canal system of water supply, which sees people with water rights in the town enjoying specific days and times when they can direct water to their homes. Look out for the cinema (a repurposed art-deco car dealership), the brightly painted houses, and the hand-painted dustbins that offer great advice to tourists.

MatjiesfonteinIf you think that a national monument has to be an inanimate object, think again. The entire town of Matjiesfontein in the Western Cape is a national monument. Originally established as a refreshment station for passing trains, Matjiesfontein is a time capsule of Victoriana, with the Lord Milner Hotel offering old-world charm, elegant décor and a few ghost stories too.

DarlingPieter-Dirk Uys’ Evita se Perron may have put Darling on the map, but this pretty town within easy reach of Cape Town has firmly established itself as one of the most beautiful places in the country to visit. Boasting more than 1,200 species of flowering plants showcased

during the annual Darling Wildflower Show over the third weekend in September, Darling is also known for its salt and dairy produce, and is making its name as a wine-making region too.

SandstoneThe annual Stars of Sandstone Steam Heritage Festival takes place near Ficksburg in the Free State each April, celebrating steam-driven vehicles and machines that have been restored to pristine condition. More than 15 years old, the festival attracts steam enthusiasts from all over the world, with Sandstone Estate’s 26km narrow-gauge railway forming the backbone of the event.

Nearly 200 years later this poignant declaration of love stops me in my tracks and I spend a while looking at the town and harbour below me, hanging on to my hat while the capricious breeze tugs at and frolics with it. My eyes absorb a very different view of Port Elizabeth to the one that greeted Sir Rufane when he stood in this very spot.

With a sigh, I turn back to continue my mission – walking the 5km Donkin Heritage Trail to see as many of the 51 historically interesting places in the Hill area of Port Elizabeth as I can.

Show me the wayI’ve elected to self-guide and begin the tour from the Donkin Reserve on a sunny, if blustery, day. Brainchild of the Historical Society of Port Elizabeth, the first edition of the Donkin Heritage Trail booklet was compiled in June 1979. Having bought the Heritage Trail booklet from the Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism (NMBT) visitor information centre inside the Lighthouse Cottage, I challenge my legs and get my heart pumping by scrambling up the endless ladders of the lighthouse, built in 1861. The poor lighthouse keeper would have tackled the ascent several times a day carrying a candle or jug of oil to fuel the great lantern, and I am thankful mine is a climb of choice and can be ticked off my ‘done’ list!

Back on the ground, I set off across the Donkin Reserve gardens with its vibrant mosaics and striking sculptures to look at the magnificent King Edward Hotel, completed in 1903. Translucent sunlight bathes the shell-pink façade and we step back to a more genteel time. The beautifully renovated Grey Institute is just next door and a terrace of refurbished Victorian ‘Donkin’ houses runs down the hill to the right.

I stroll past the Grand Hotel opened in 1885 by

perspective on art and life in general

“To the memory of one of the most perfect of human beings, who has given her name to the town below,” reads the inscription on the russet stone pyramid monument. The memorial to his late wife, Elizabeth, was commissioned in 1820 by the heartbroken acting governor of the Cape Colony, Sir Rufane Shaw Donkin, and the touching shrine declared a National Monument in 1938.

Arnold Lipman, although part of the building dates back to 1867 when it was built as a private residence for Robert Dunlop Buchanan. From there I head into the Athenaeum Building, now a colourful art gallery and theatre. I spend some time browsing before exiting round the corner towards number seven, Castle Hill, leaning my body forward into powerful gusts of wind, and I am gratefully blown into the quaint little cottage. Completed in 1825, it’s one of the oldest settler cottages and showcases a family home of the time. The cellar kitchen is a delight of household appliances from the 19th century. Despite their aged steel surfaces and old-fashioned design, they performed the same tasks as ours do today – without electricity, of course. Enthralled by volunteer guide Alan Montgomery’s stories and riveted by his encyclopaedic knowledge of the house, its contents and the family who once lived there, number seven holds me captive for over an hour.

Looking out for a heroFirmly clutching my hat, I set off past the Prince Alfred’s Guard Drill Hall in search of the Opera House, sweeping around the Main Library and Queen Victoria Statue, the Market Square and City Hall, before climbing back up the hill to gaze longingly at the St George’s Club through the perimeter railings. Deep sighs escape my lips as I imagine descending the magnificent staircase, ballgowns sweeping polished wood while I smile coquettishly at the admiring red-coated military officers and uniformed naval officers standing below. My vision of colony life is nothing if not romanticised.

I am struck by the number of churches – seven on the trail itself – from quaint little stone chapels to imposing, elegant cathedrals, including a convent. The Hill area in Port Elizabeth is a gem of heritage architecture, each building lovingly conserved and comfortably settled in its surroundings. The Historical Society and NMBT are to be commended on the care they take to preserve this fragment of South Africa’s heritage.

Yet the Central area is not all about a past vintage life – although its official name is Little Theatre, the adorable playhouse inside the Athenaeum Building is nicknamed the Smartie Theatre for its 250 multi-coloured seats, and the pop-art foyer is a riotous explosion of colour. Quirky slices of cross-sectioned minibus taxis are cheerfully bolted to the rock face facing the 123-year-old Opera House, and brought to life at night with ultraviolet backlighting. The eerie glow behind a modern South African icon reflecting onto the Victorian façade of the oldest theatre in the Southern Hemisphere is a cheeky tribute to the creative vibrancy of Port Elizabeth’s arty soul.

Unfortunately, I only have a few hours at my disposal and have to reluctantly call time out before I have seen everything. Seemingly, it is possible to do the entire trail in half a day, but I recommend you take it in half-day bites and enjoy browsing each point at leisure. Not all of the buildings are open to trail visitors. Some are privately owned by businesses who have ensured the outside façade is in line with the original architecture. But each deserves an admiring stop – after all, these longest-surviving settlers have waited a long time for your visit, why dash past at warp speed?

Put on your comfy shoes – there are plenty of steps and some stern hills to climb. And oh, yes, wear a hat with a chinstrap.

This is the Devil’s Pool at the Victoria Falls on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe. At close to 2km wide and over 100m high, the falls are the largest sheet of falling water on Earth, often called one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

A trip to the pool is an enthralling, adrenalin-soaked highlight of any visit to the Victoria Falls, and the only way to properly experience Mosi-oa-Tunya – the

smoke that thunders. To get the experience, you have to take a boat ride, hike a small river island, and swim through currents before jumping off a rock into the ultimate infinity pool.

By royal decreeIt all starts on a jetty on the banks of the Zambezi, on the Zambian side of the Victoria Falls. A boat ride takes you to Livingstone Island, a strip of dry land at the very edge of the falls. It was here, in 1855, that Scottish explorer David Livingstone became the first European to see the falls, a scene he declared to be “so lovely, it must have been gazed on by angels in their flight,” and named them after his queen, Victoria.

You can enjoy a quick tour of the small island, which remains lush and tropical all year round, offering spectacular views of the Victoria Falls and chance sightings of wildlife – a family of elephants swimming

Falls as the smoke that thunders

as writer Stephen Hunt said, if you’re not living on the edge, you’re taking

up too much space. Imagine floating in a natural rock pool right on the lip of the largest waterfall in the world, looking down into the gorge far, far below as the waters of the great Zambezi River thunder past, while the spray rises and perpetual rainbows dance in the air.

across the Zambezi, hippos surfacing, or a solitary giraffe loping along the far shore.

At the edge of the worldThen it’s time to head to the Devil’s Pool. It’s important to have experienced tour guides with you, as this is no health-and-safety-sanctioned excursion. They will show you the safest way to cross the

rocks on the shore, and then guide you through the swift currents of the Zambezi as you strike out for the pool. After a short swim, you climb out onto a rocky outcrop, and it’s time to jump into the Devil’s Pool.

The guides go first, to show you where to jump and ensure everyone gets in safely. Experienced guides

here, somersaulting spectacularly into the rock pool, right at the edge of the waterfall. Then it’s your turn.

You jump off the rock and into the pool, the water deep enough to cover your head. As you surface the current takes you, sweeping you towards the brink of the massive waterfall. But before you hurtle over the edge you are stopped by a slippery lip of underwater rock right on the edge of the precipice. There you are: swimming at the edge of the world. The sun-warmed water whirls around you, with little fish making love nibbles on your legs.

Sit yourself down on the Devil’s Armchair, and take in the view. Below, the Zambezi plunges into the canyon, thundering as it goes, and as the spray rises, rainbows form in the mist of the gorge. It’s the closest you’ll ever get to the Victoria Falls, and the best view in the world. There’s nothing else like it, anywhere.

If you’re particularly adventurous, you can even pull your head and shoulders right over the edge of the falls – while a guide holds your feet, of course! There you get a direct, spectacular look straight down the massive sheet of water and its frothy, tumbling spray as it drops over 100m to the riverbed below. If you bring a camera (preferably waterproof), the tour guides will take

photos of you looking out over the waterfall, jumping into the water, or just chilling out in the pool at the edge of the precipice.

Once you’ve had your fill of adrenalin and natural beauty, it’s time to head back through the Zambezi to Livingstone Island for a picnic lunch and a few drinks to toast to your experience.

The Devil’s Pool is not for the faint-hearted. It is essential to only make the trip in the company of experienced tour guides from a reputable travel company. They know the river and its currents, and will explain the guidelines and ensure your safety every step of the way.

It is only safe to visit the pool in the dry season from around September to December, when the water level is low. In the wet season the Zambezi rises dramatically, submerging the Devil’s Pool.

Bring swimwear, a towel, and sturdy shoes for hiking and scrambling over rocks. Dry clothes to wear at the picnic after your plunge are also a good idea. And in case nobody back home believes your experience, don’t forget your camera.

The first was determination and self-belief. The Blossoms set out to win, not just play on the same field as the Boks. Every scrum, loose ball, and line-out was contested, and nothing was left unchallenged. Their self-belief was exemplified by eschewing a penalty option for an equaliser in the final moments, and instead opting to back themselves to get over a heavily defended game line – which they did.

The second was that the victory was a team effort. Everyone participated in making the outcome happen,

and they did so for every single minute of the game. The third was to sidestep predictability. They set out to

do things differently on the field, and do so they did. They challenged the Boks where the South Africans thought they were unassailable – in the rucks and scrums – and prevailed. They got to the loose balls faster than their opponents and they handled the ball with certainty and dexterity. It all added up to a scintillating performance that received its due reward.

The fourth lesson that this sporting cameo offered was

the Japanese Brave Blossoms (aka the Cherry Blossoms) stunned the rugby world when they beat the highly favoured Springboks in Brighton

on 19 September. However, in addition to giving South African fans serious cause for concern, they also provided us with a number of valuable lessons.

Beating Lessons learnt from the Rugby World Cup

the odds

Page 43: Skydec complete

how the underdogs were taken to heart by the rugby-viewing public, including South African supporters, as this excerpt from The Guardian noted: “Back in Brighton, Springbok fans applauded the Japanese team onto their bus as they travelled back to their Warwick base. Others shook Japanese fans’ hands and formed a guard of honour as they boarded trains out of the city at the end of a quite extraordinary day.”

And finally, they broke their mould as an also-ran team by preparing hard with a good coach and delivering the goods. This has massively increased their profile both nationally and globally. The victory over the Boks rewrote history for Japanese rugby, it has moved from a third-rate sport (behind baseball and football) into the full spotlight of national pride and glory.

A victory that can be wonSo what can we in the South African tourism industry take from this?

In terms of tourism, team South Africa is facing some heavy odds – load shedding, concern over tourist legislation, a tenuous but persistent association with West African plagues, and a negative perception owing to crime, to name but a few.

Does this mean that we lie down and accept a second-rate status in terms of international tourism? Are these odds really that insurmountable? No.

Here is where we should take a leaf out of the Blossoms’ book. We need to view ourselves positively despite the setbacks, and sell ourselves positively – with vigour and enthusiasm. We have a great package to offer visitors but they need to know about it. They need to see us perform, so we have to sharpen up our act in the public sphere. Great work mustn’t just be done, it must also be seen done – and the optimal way to do that is to give our visitors the best possible experience that they can have. Raise the standards of service so that they are not simply adequate but excellent. Ensure that the packages deliver everything and more than the brochures promise. Make customer satisfaction a number one priority – and we must do that in every sphere of our game, from our sales through our services to our delivery.

Challenge the odds, don’t accept them. Make the effort, break the mould, commit to the outcome; it will pay off and you will be appreciated nationally and globally. And remember, it is a team effort and everyone must play their part, so get them all on board. South African tourism should be a source of massive national pride and be part of the way we identify ourselves and our country. We deserve no less.

Scrambled connections The beginning of the year saw the unravelling of drama during the State of the Nation Address in Parliament. Journalists from various media houses were surprised when their communication devices

were not working, only to find out that the network had been cut off. It later emerged that the National Intelligence Agency had cut off the signal around the National Assembly chamber unintentionally. It was reported that the cut-off had been an operational error and the NIA said the error would not happen again.

as the year draws to a close, we take a look at a few of the

events which made headlines across the globe. Here are 10 things worth remembering 2015 for.

New ancestry Probably one of the biggest reveals made this year, Homo naledi’s discovery was announced on 10 September. The fossil species, which was found in 2013 at the Cradle of Humankind, is said to be one of the biggest discoveries in Africa because of the appearance of ritualised behaviour by the species. They are believed to have buried their dead, a trait only characteristic of humans. After further studies, the species will be dated and placed on the evolutionary timeline, indicating whether or not Homo naledi is the predecessor of humans.

SA’s resident funny man goes internationalTrevor Noah, one of South Africa’s best-loved comedians, has been gaining international attention for a while now. The funny man’s biggest break came when the host of The Daily Show in the United

make their repayment to the International Monetary Fund, and their banks were closed. Although the government tried to avoid the crash by reducing wages and returning to a primary budget surplus, thus having a deflation impact on their economy, the crash quickly became inevitable as the unemployment rate and debt to GDP ratio rose. The country has since gone back to its old currency, the drachma, after its citizens voted ‘no’ to a bailout package from the EU.

European refugee crisis Thousands have been displaced, seeking asylum in countries such as Germany, Hungary and the United Kingdom. The crisis follows after thousands fled by boat or overland from Syria, Afghanistan, Kosovo, Albania and other countries due to unrest and civil wars. Although there have been more than half a million asylum applications made throughout the EU, these are only a fraction of the overall number of migrants, which is estimated to be more than 710,000. Plans to relocate 120,000 refugees were put in place, with the majority being relocated from Greece, the port of entry for many migrants.

Charleston church shooting The Charleston shooting is said to be the largest mass shooting at an American place of worship alongside a Buddhist attack which occurred in 1991. Dylann Roof, the suspect, allegedly shot nine men and women during an evening service at the Charleston church in South Carolina, USA. The 21-year-old reportedly tried to start a race war after he’d read articles online about black-on-white violence in America. The State is seeking to have Dylann sentenced to the death penalty. The outcome will be seen after his trial in June 2016.

States, Jon Stewart, resigned after 16 years. Trevor Noah took the reins of the popular satirical news show in August, impressing both South African and American fans and critics. The comedian now maintains permanent residence in the USA and it does not seem as though he will be coming home anytime soon.

Oscar released After being sentenced to five years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, Oscar was released in early October after he completed the required 10 months (one-sixth of his sentence) in prison. The Paralympian was to be released in August, but this changed after Justice Minister, Michael Masutha, sought legal advice as to whether or not the parole board’s decision to release Oscar in August was correct. He claimed that Oscar’s parole was only to be considered from the point when he finished his 10 months and not before that. The athlete was released in October and will serve the rest of his sentence in his uncle’s home in Waterkloof, Pretoria, under correctional supervision.

Banyana Banyana qualifies for Rio Olympics The South African women’s football squad will go head-to-head against other teams during the Rio Olympics in Brazil in August next year. The team qualified in a winning match against Equatorial

Guinea in Estadio de Bata. The national women’s soccer team won 1-0 against the more experienced Guineans, making the Rio Olympics the second Olympics in which they will play.

Students uniteSolidarity among students was seen countrywide in an effort to thwart several universities’ attempts to increase their tuition, registration and residence fees. The #FeesMustFall protests began in October when University of Cape Town and Wits University students brought their universities to a standstill. The movement gained momentum as students from Rhodes and the University of Pretoria also decided to protest. Students in Cape Town marched to Parliament while students in Gauteng and some from the University of Limpopo marched to the Union Buildings. Although there was violence and some were arrested, the students were granted their 0% increase in tuition after the President made a statement to the press in October.

Rugby World Cup This year’s World Cup in England saw many South Africans disappointed. Although theirs was a good fight, the Springboks lost to the All Blacks during the semi-final stages. The tournament, held in England from 18 September until 31 October, saw 20 teams going head-to-head to win the title. In the end New Zealand, who hold the record for the most World Cup matches, became the champions, claiming this year’s title as their third World Cup victory. South Africans will have to wait with bated breath until the next World Cup, which will be hosted by Asia in 2019, for another shot at the title.

Firstly, chapter 2 of the EEA outlaws unfair discrimination at the workplace. This means that employers are not allowed to treat job applicants or existing employees unfairly on arbitrary grounds. These arbitrary or subjective grounds include race, gender, age and disability.

Secondly, chapter 3 of the EEA requires certain employers to implement AA. This legal obligation imposes a further limitation on employers looking for suitable people to fill key technical and managerial positions. This is because employers are required, when filling vacancies, to appoint members of designated groups (black, female and disabled). That is, the EEA requires designated employers to strive to ensure that the demography (population ratios) of their organisations mirrors the demography of the society in which the organisations operate. For example, if the population of Gauteng is 80% black, then designated

employers need to do everything possible to ensure that black people constitute 80% of the employees at every level of their organisations, including top management.

What are the expectations? While the law does not expect employers to fire all their able white male employees from key positions to make way for designated groups, the EEA does expect employers to fill vacancies with black, female and disabled people until the required demographic levels have been achieved.

For some years the interpretation of the EEA was that, while chapter 2 (prohibition of unfair discrimination) and chapter 3 (requirement for AA) had similar goals, the ways in which each of the two chapters are to be enforced are very different. That is, where an employee or job applicant felt unfairly discriminated against, he could sue the employer in the Labour Court. However,

despite our increasing unemployment rate, finding new employees with the necessary skills in certain fields is very difficult. This is partly because many skilled people

are concerned about employment opportunities in South Africa and have therefore looked for greener pastures overseas or opened their own businesses. Added to this is the challenge posed by the requirement of the Employment Equity Act (EEA) for employers to implement affirmative action (AA). The EEA was drawn up in order to counteract the effects of historical inequalities in two ways.

Does failure to implement affirmative action constitute unfair discrimination?

The colour bar

Page 49: Skydec complete

where employees feel that the employer is failing to implement AA, they could report the employer to the Director General of Labour.

This apparently clear division of recourse for aggrieved employees has been reinforced by the Labour Court’s decision in the case of Dudley vs City of Cape Town and Another in February 2004. In this case Dudley had been appointed to the post of Interim Manager: Health Services. Later on Dudley applied for a more senior post advertised by the municipality. The City appointed a white male into the post despite the facts that Dudley was qualified for the job and that the City had the obligation, in terms of its own policies, to implement AA.

Dudley, who was a black female, referred an unfair discrimination dispute to the Labour Court on two grounds. The first was that, as she was the best qualified candidate, the failure to appoint her constituted unfair discrimination based on race and gender. It appears that the court found against her on this point because of the incorrect way in which her claim was made.

Dudley’s second claim was that the employer’s failure

to implement AA constituted unfair discrimination. The court found against this claim because in its view, failure to implement AA is a matter for the Director General of Labour to deal with and not the Labour Court.

It also found that AA is a group-based obligation and not an individual right. In addition, both South Africa’s Constitution and the EEA distinguish between AA and unfair discrimination.

However, in the case of Harmse vs City of Cape Town in February 2004, the Labour Court found that an individual employee did have the right to AA and did have recourse directly to the Labour Court on the grounds that failure to implement AA constituted unfair discrimination. This is yet another instance where the courts are unable to agree with one another on key legal issues.

In light of this uncertainty, employers are advised to ensure that they implement AA responsibly, that their AA policies are in line with the EEA, and that these policies are realistically implementable.

Coping with a ‘last-minute boss’

Under the wire

4812 15

executive | decision

Page 51: Skydec complete

we have all experienced the panic that follows a colleague or supervisor making last-minute requests. This becomes a problem when it is a regular

occurrence, as it can cause immense stress, aggravation and even have financial implications.

As such, there is a need for a robust solution to deal with team members and management who make changes or demands at the 11th hour.

The organisational costs involved with last-minute changes can be substantial. In extreme cases, companies may come to a grinding halt when managers stop taking action and making decisions because they fear others will second-guess them at the last minute.

Typical last-minute changes can range from

amendments to a presentation moments before the start of a meeting, to changing new launch material when the production is already delayed, or even changing an event agenda during the proceedings.

Get to the root of the issueThe best way to address such behaviour is to remove all emotion from the situation and avoid attributing a manager’s bad behaviour to internal dispositions, while

4912 15

Page 52: Skydec complete

ignoring external factors that might be influencing his or her behaviour. By being able to introduce greater predictability and stability, you will assist your organisation, your boss, your team members and yourself. Take some time to explore why a supervisor might be leaving things open to the last minute.

The three top influence possibilities are: • A supervisor may be distracted by other tasks and

therefore does not deal with the matter at hand until the last minute, at which time he or she then wants to make changes.

• Other management members, whom a supervisor has to accommodate, may be making amendments at the last minute. This is then passed on to you with additional comments from a direct supervisor.

• In some instances the situation may be fluid and therefore really requires last-minute changes.

Four-pronged approachThe following four steps can help individuals deal with last-minute changes and demands:

• Determine what you really want. Focus on what you want long-term for the organisation, your boss, yourself and for your working relationship. Try to avoid a self-focused perspective, and feelings such as: “Situations like these are causing immense stress for me. I like to plan things well in advance and do not like surprises at the last

moment.” Instead, focus on the benefits you want to achieve.

• Establish expectations that work for everyone. Define the gap. This refers to the difference between what you expect and what you’ve observed. This may be the gap between what you expect and what your boss and other stakeholders expect. Your conversation will succeed when you can align these expectations. A good process is to involve the right people, such as your boss and other stakeholders, at the right time, before decisions become last minute. By learning how project management is done in your organisation, you will be able to apply these elements to conversations you may need to hold.

The ultimate goal is to have your boss and other stakeholders commit to following a project management process that will make their lives easier and improve the effectiveness of the organisation.

• Move important decisions forward in time. As your boss isn’t making decisions until they are urgent, a part of the solution should be to create this urgency earlier. Project plans can achieve this by establishing checkpoints that involve people early on in the process. However, this involvement only works if people take the plans seriously and the checkpoints create a sense of urgency. It is vital to get the team’s serious involvement from the start. If you can’t achieve this, then unfortunately it will happen at the last minute.

• Get permission to hold people accountable to the project plan. Your first test will come when your boss and others skip project checkpoints or arrive unprepared. Talk with them in advance about this potential and the consequences. If they don’t commit and become focused on the project from the beginning, then the whole planning process will break down, and you will be back to last-minute changes.

For individuals who thrive on being organised and prepared, regular occurrences of last-minute changes not only cause stress, but can also affect the individual’s output and confidence in the workplace. It is important that the robust solution addresses the identified influence and acknowledges the reasons for the last-minute changes, otherwise your boss is likely to feel attacked and become defensive.

However, it is important that you learn to stretch your bonus further than 31 January, and also to plan ahead so that you are not in an insecure financial state after the festive season or adding on more debt to make ends meet in the new year. Here are a few tips to make your bonus go further.

Pay off debtUse your bonus to pay off debt first. Make this an opportunity to settle short-term debts such as retail store cards, credit cards and personal loans, which typically

have high interest rates. You don’t have to settle all of your short-term debts right now, but if possible, tackle the one with the highest interest rate and pay it in full.

Also, never start saving or investing if you still owe money on anything except a car or a house. If you do start saving before paying off debt, it means you are paying more in interest than what you will receive by saving.

Consider affordable ways to entertain the childrenWith school holidays lasting for as long as five weeks, families tend to spend significantly to keep children entertained. There are many cost effective ways of getting the kids to have fun without breaking the bank: try doing some of the things you used to do as a child with your children such as building and flying kites, building puzzles together, or baking festive treats. Other activities that won’t break the bank include hiring

it’s not called the silly season without reason, especially when it comes to financial

movies and books from the library, playing a sport together, having a picnic in the backyard or heading to the park or the beach.

SaveA great time to start saving is when you get a bonus. Put 10% away immediately towards your savings. A bonus cheque can also be used towards a short-term goal such as an emergency fund, towards a medium-term goal such as a house or car deposit, or towards a long-term goal such as retirement savings.

Get adviceSpeak to a financial advisor to find out which investment or savings solutions will be the best for your goals.

Draw up a budgetWith most people getting paid early in December, and again only at the end of January, it is important to draw up a budget for festive season and new year spending. Make sure that you have put money aside for items that you must definitely pay at the end of December such as your bond repayments, car repayments, rent, and all other monthly debit orders.

Do spend, but do it wiselyBeing financially responsible does not mean forgoing all the season’s treats such as shopping for gifts and food. However, before you embark on your festive season shopping spree, make a list of what you will need for the key holiday season meals such as Christmas lunch or dinner. This will help you stay focused in the shopping aisles and resist putting unnecessary items in your trolley.

Plan for the next holiday seasonIt’s not too early to start thinking about how to spend your next holiday. A small portion of this year’s bonus can kick-start a 2016 holiday savings account, which will earn a higher rate of interest than a transaction account.

Do celebrateIt’s the festive season, so don’t forget to have fun. It’s been a long year and you have worked hard for your bonus. There is nothing wrong with getting into the festive spirit and treating yourself and family with your bonus. However, remember to set money aside for your priority expenditures and you will have the peace of mind of enjoying a financially secure holiday season and January.

In a windowless office on a tiny side street in San Francisco, Noah Kraft is making me hear things in a way I’ve never heard them before. I’m wearing a wireless earbud in each ear. The devices, which are white and look kind of like big Altoids mints, are the latest prototype built by Doppler Labs, a wearable-technology startup of which Kraft is cofounder and CEO. Kraft is sitting diagonally across from me, chatting, and using an iPhone app to manipulate the sound of his voice and the relatively quiet background noise of the office in ways that only I can hear.

He adds an echo to his voice. He raises and lowers the bass, treble, and midrange. Then he stands up and walks several feet away, but he sounds as loud as if he were yapping right in my ear – until I take out the earbuds and confirm that he’s actually speaking pretty quietly.

Doppler is one of a few companies working on wearable gadgets that aim to augment the average person’s hearing: you’d be able to adjust the bass and treble at a concert with a few swipes on an accompanying smartphone app, or block out specific noises like a crying baby or the hum of an airplane engine.

Doppler’s first product, a pair of R2,000 earbuds called Here, will be aimed at audiophiles, and sales will be limited when they start shipping out late this year. They work by using algorithms to cancel out sounds you don’t want to hear as they enter your ear, while letting through the sounds you do want. It’s all controlled with a smartphone app, and the company plans to include settings for situations like live music and travel. When I tried it, it did work, though I didn’t get to test it out in a stressful situation like a plane trip with a crying baby.

Nuheara, meanwhile, is trying to do something similar to Doppler but also plans to let users of its forthcoming wireless earbuds connect with digital audio – music, phone calls, and, on the iPhone, Siri.

For some construction workers, slacking off will soon be harder to hide. The drones will almost certainly notice.

Once per week, several drones circle the work site of a lavish new downtown stadium for the Sacramento Kings in California, collecting video footage. That footage is then converted into a 3-D picture of the site, which is fed into software that compares it

With a few swipes, block the sound of

Bionic hearing gadgets

David Cannington, a cofounder of Nuheara and its head of sales and marketing, says an iPhone app will let users do things like adjust background noise to enhance music they’re listening to or boost their hearing in a noisy restaurant. Cannington says the company hopes to have a working prototype by the end of the year and to start selling the earbuds in late 2016 for “less than R3,000.”

Like all kinds of wearables hitting the market, though, Doppler’s and Nuheara’s earbuds face formidable challenges with technology and comfort. Since they tend to use Bluetooth for communication between the in-ear device and a smartphone app, they depend on it to work well – and as anyone who’s used a Bluetooth headset knows, the sound quality can be choppy even over short distances.

I didn’t encounter this when trying Doppler, but I did notice some fuzzy sounds when my hair brushed past the earpieces. And sometimes when Kraft spoke to me I got the sensation of being in an empty concert hall or train station. As he explained, Doppler is still tweaking sound quality to get things like echo cancellation just right.

with computerised architectural plans as well as a construction work plan showing when each element should be finished. The software can show managers how the project is progressing and automatically highlight parts that may be falling behind schedule.

“We highlight at-risk locations on a site, where the probability of having an issue is really high,” says Mani Golparvar-Fard, an assistant professor in the department of civil engineering at the University of Illinois, who developed the software with several colleagues. It can show, for example, that a particular structural element is behind schedule, perhaps because materials have not yet arrived. The software is also being used at a high-rise construction project in Arizona and by Taisei, a large construction company in Japan.

While the construction company in Sacramento says the goal is not to monitor worker productivity directly, this development highlights the way new technologies allow manual work to be monitored and scrutinised. And it comes as productivity in other areas of work, including in white-collar jobs, is being tracked more closely.

Such scrutiny is sometimes controversial. It raises worries over privacy, for instance, and fears that people may be pushed to work excessive hours. Golparvar-Fard concedes that this could be a concern, but he defends the idea: “It’s not really questioning the efficiency of the workers; it’s questioning what resources they need to be more efficient.”

Monitoring activity across a large, complex construction site is particularly difficult because there are so many moving parts, and because the jobs being performed change frequently. Lincoln Wood, regional manager for virtual design and construction at Turner Construction, which is running the Sacramento project, says that while it is common to monitor progress closely, the near-real-time aerial images and software analysis being used there provide a more comprehensive picture of what’s going on, highlighting how a slowdown in one area may affect the entire project.

The University of Illinois team is currently testing a system that will allow drones to move cameras around a building site so that activity can be monitored continually. They are also using a crowdsourcing platform to categorise workers’ activities in video footage. A manager can then see how certain tasks are being performed, and how much time each worker is spending on a job.

From 25 November until 10 December each year, for more than a decade now, people around the world are asked to wear white ribbons – white, a symbol of peace – to show their commitment to never abuse women or children and to not stand by and do nothing when it happens.

Sixteen days. Sixteen days out of 365. That is less than

The stats paint a prettier picture than the

reality of the number of unreported cases

of domestic violence

around you there are white ribbons. Maybe you

are even wearing one yourself. On the www.southafrica.info website one article states: “Imagine if, for 16 days, there was no rape, no child abuse.”

Is 16 days enough?Violence should not be tolerated, for all 365 days of the year

5812 15

time | out

Page 61: Skydec complete

5% of a year. Is that really the best we can hope for? When we look at the statistics around the world, or even just

in South Africa, it seems that even 16 days of no abuse against women and children in a year may be too much to ask.

“If data for all violent assaults, rapes and other sexual assaults against women are taken into account, then approximately 200,000 adult women are reported as being attacked in South Africa every year,” says Lerato Moloi of the South African Institute for Race Relations.

That is almost 550 cases per day – and that’s only the ones we know about.

Shocking? It should be.The question has been asked whether the widely publicised

Oscar Pistorius trial highlighted a need to re-examine the

laws of domestic violence and the abuse of women. There is no doubt that the death of Reeva Steenkamp is an incredible tragedy, but on the Valentine’s Day she died, statistics say there were at least two other women killed by their partners. And referring again to the figures above, more than 500 other women were also attacked that day – that we know of. I repeat: that we know of. Studies such as the Violence Against Women in Three South African Provinces by the Medical Research Council indicate that the true figure for the country is probably just over 500,000 per year.

The figures we have been looking at have mostly been based on sexual crimes or specifically the rape of women. But we need to combat all forms of abuse. Abuse includes any form of behaviour that instils fear, causes harm – whether it is physical or emotional – or forces a person do things against their will.

Silent victimsParliament has passed laws to protect the rights of individuals against abuse and they include The Domestic Violence Act of 1998, The Children's Act of 2005 and the The Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters Act) Amendment Act of 2007.

“South Africa is still home to high levels of violence against its women and children, despite a world-renowned constitution and a legislative overhaul that safeguards women's and children's rights,” according to www.southafrica.info.

And this is where a big part of the problem lies. It doesn’t matter how good our laws are if women and children are not willing or able to speak out. And why wouldn’t they be willing? Often abuse happens in the home, and the fear of severe consequences if they say anything prevents victims from coming forward. Simply knowing who to trust is also a great obstacle. If you are not safe with your own family, where do you go for help? Sadly sometimes the victims do not receive support when they do speak out. A report of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Violence against Women and Children states that “there is evidence that victims reported cases of domestic violence to police or social workers, but their pleas for help fell on deaf ears or [they] were told to resolve the matter with their partners.”

A law is only useful if it can be enforced. The committee also noted that there is “a need to move from policy to action.”

Should something be done? I hope you are thinking ‘YES!’ as you are reading this. Something should be done, and the annual 16 Days of Activism is one attempt at making a difference.

Did you know that there are 500 reported cases of woman abuse per day in South Africa?

5912 15

Page 62: Skydec complete

A call to actionSo what is it that this campaign hopes to achieve?• Challenge abusers to change their behaviour.• Involve men in helping to eliminate violence.• Provide survivors with information. Why did they select 25 November to 10 December? Here are some key dates in that time:• 25 November: International Day of No Violence

Against Women• 29 November: International Women Human Rights

Defenders Day• 1 December: World Aids Day• 3 December: International Day for the Disabled• 10 December: International Human Rights DaySo what can we do?Wearing a white ribbon during the 16 Days of Activism is a start, but here are a few more things you can do to show your support:• Say why you are wearing the ribbon. Speak up against

violence and abuse.• Know your rights.• Report abuse.• Empower your children.

These 16 days, however, mean very little if we turn our backs the rest of the year. “While the campaign runs only for 16 days each year, its objectives are reinforced by a year-long programme and a national plan to combat abuse.”

Abuse happens every day, and supporting a campaign against abuse is a wonderful step to take, but we cannot leave it there. We cannot wait for a tragic celebrity shooting before we are willing to pay attention.

We have to pay attention every day. We need to be the change.

We need to fight the urge to be violent, to call people names, to tread on dreams. We have to set an example by living a life where our answer is not a cruel word, but rather a word of encouragement and upliftment.

So are we okay with only 16 days?I hope not. I would love to live in a world where all

365 days of the year are without violence and crime. But we have to start somewhere. And if we can do 16 days, hopefully we can do another 16 days. And another. And another. And another.

Anti-abuse projects you can support

• 16 Days of Activism.• International Day of No Violence Against Women.• Ring the Bell. One million men. One million

promises. End violence against women.• One Billion Rising. Raise awareness to end violence

against women through dance.• POWA – creating a safer society that does not

tolerate violence against women.• Foundation for Human Rights.

Fast-forward to 2015, and the BMW price list has become a morass of options and specifications. Take, for example, the X6. There are really just four engine options: the 35i, 40d, 50i and M50d (not including the X6M). But that doesn’t mean there are only four choices. Each engine option is also available in either Pure Extravagance or M Sport specification. This means there are effectively 12 versions to choose from. And you haven’t even glanced at all the optional extras yet.

Gone are the days when a vehicle with an M badge was necessarily an ‘M car’. Realising the marketing potential of that shiny little M, BMW has started slapping it on everything. As a result, there are also M Performance cars – vehicles that enjoy some of the benefits of M Division’s fiddling, but aren’t proper M cars. The X6 M50d is an example of this. But does an oil-burning SUV truly deserve to have an M badge?

Power upNo doubt there are purists who baulk at the thought of a diesel SUV sporting BMW’s M insignia, but I would encourage them to take the M50d for a test drive.

Living with the M50d is a wonderful experience. The 2,993cc engine is powered by no less than three turbochargers, which deliver 280kW of power and 740Nm of torque. Thanks to this fancy blower setup, power is also delivered in a wonderfully linear and progressive fashion. Turbo lag is virtually non-existent.

Highlight figures include a (limited) top speed of 250km/h and a 0-100km/h time of 5.2 seconds. Despite this, BMW claims fuel consumption of 6.6ℓ/100km. That might be a tad optimistic, but you can easily keep it at around 8 or 9ℓ/100km without nursing the car.

Overall, driving the M50d on a daily basis is very easy. The vehicle does a great job of hiding its vicious nature.

Once upon a time, not that long ago, it was easy to navigate a BMW price list. Yes, there were cars that started with numbers like 3, 5 and 7, but essentially, there were only two kinds of BMW: standard Beemers and those that had been tuned by the company’s legendary M Division.

Page 65: Skydec complete

Leave the SUV in Comfort mode and keep your inputs subtle, and you’d never guess that the M50d is capable of such ferociousness.

But put your foot down, and the X6 will unleash its great power. With 740Nm of torque available at low revs (2,000r/min), the M50d is very quickly out of the gate. The eight-speed sport gearbox has no trouble keeping up with the engine, swapping cogs quickly and virtually imperceptibly.

Race up to a corner and the large ventilated discs will surprise you with their ability to slow down the hulking X6. The SUV has a tare weight of 2,120kg, but it doesn’t seem that way when you press down on the brakes. Yes, you can sense the immense weight, but the brakes slow it down with surprising ease.

Through a corner, the vehicle remains tight and controlled, especially when placed in Sport mode. This is thanks to the adaptive M Sport suspension, which is standard. It really does a great job of providing the X6 with a coupe-like feel.

The M50d is so good, in fact, that it is hard to believe it could be bettered. There is no denying that driving

the M50d is an intoxicating experience. Your head will probably tell you that buying this sporty SUV is a bad idea, but your heart will be begging you to sign the contract.

Landau du Val Private Selection Semillon 2013This wine’s initial freshness on the nose opens up to a complex citrus and zesty lime, with underlying red apple aromas. A full, rich palate of honey, nougat and citrus is perfectly balanced with caramel sweetness and a delightful lingering creamy finish. When Basil and Jane Landau purchased their historic farm, La Brie, in 1986 (established by Huguenot Jacques de Villiers in 1689), and discovered the block of Semillon bush vines (currently 110 years old) on the slope of the mountain, which were not irrigated, they never thought that Landau du Val Semillon, which they started producing in 1995, would be recognised as a heritage wine of South Africa.

The farm also produces Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and Pinotage grapes, which are supplied to various leading wineries in the Franschhoek valley. Basil and Jane’s top three South African wines are:

the woman they thought was just her roommate, the small, safe world the Farrells inhabit changes forever. They are left with a simple and difficult choice – either change with it or drown.

The Vatican Tapes The Vatican Tapes follows the battle between good and evil – God versus Satan. Angela Holmes is an ordinary 27-year-old until she begins to

have a devastating effect on anyone close, causing serious injury and death. Holmes is examined and possession is suspected, but when the Vatican is called upon to exorcise the demon, the possession proves to be

an ancient satanic force more powerful than ever imagined. It’s all up to Father Lozano to wage war for more than just Angela’s soul, but for the world as we know it.

The Water Diviner (drama, war)The film opens in 1919, just after World War I has ended. Joshua Connor, an Australian farmer and water diviner, has located ground water on his land and is digging

a well. Joshua’s three sons, Arthur, Edward and Henry, had served with the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps at the Battle of Gallipoli four years earlier, and are presumed dead. Joshua’s wife, Eliza, unable to cope with her grief, commits suicide. Joshua resolves to bring his sons’ bodies home and bury them with their mother.

Inside OutRiley’s dad has a new job, and that means Riley’s family has had to move to a new town.

This is hard for Riley and her emotions are all fighting against one another – literally. Inside, her mind is a control centre where emotions like joy, fear, anger, disgust and sadness live. This is headquarters, and Joy (Riley’s main emotion) is struggling to keep the rest positive. But the conflict causes Riley to act out in some really weird ways. Can they all work together again so that Riley can get back to normal?

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (action)

The IMF agency comes under threat from the Syndicate, a near-mythical organisation of assassins and rogue operatives who

kill to order. Faced with the IMF’s disbandment, Ethan Hunt assembles his team for their final and most difficult mission … to prove the Syndicate’s existence and bring the organisation down by any means necessary.

CDsKenny G’s Classic Christmas Album

One of the greatest Christmas compilations of all time, Kenny G rings out favourites such as Joy to the

World, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas and Ave Maria. This is a must-have for all fans of one of the greatest saxophone players of all time.

Boney M’s Christmas AlbumLove them or loathe them, there is no denying that Boney M and Christmas are forever intertwined.

First released in 1981, there have been several versions since, including a fully remixed version in 2007. The album features the

Killing Reagan by Bill O’Reilly

Just two months into his presidency, Ronald Reagan lay near death after a gunman’s bullet came within inches of his heart. His recovery was nothing short of

remarkable – or so it seemed. Told in the same riveting fashion as Killing Lincoln, Killing Kennedy, Killing Jesus and Killing Patton, Killing Reagan reaches back to the golden days of Hollywood, where Reagan found both fame and heartbreak, through the years in the California governor’s mansion, and finally to the White House, where he presided over boom years and the fall of the Iron Curtain. But it was John Hinckley Jr’s attack on him that precipitated President Reagan’s most heroic actions.

hit singles Mary’s Boy Child, Little Drummer Boy and Feliz Navidad.

Watch the Rain, by WatershedWatershed’s latest release marks a

15-year bond with fans both locally and globally, and it doesn’t disappoint. Watch the Rain may represent a

new progression in the band’s voyage and accession, but it still promises audiences the same powerhouse performances, inimitable vocals and impeccable musicianship that have helped forged the band’s international recognition and success.

1 Luxury chocolate sales increase exponentially at Christmas time. This is often attributed to

the wrapping used for luxury chocolates and their perceived value because of the cost.

2 White chocolate technically isn’t chocolate because it contains no cocoa solids or cocoa

liquids. White chocolate does, however, contain cocoa butter.

3 The inventor of the chocolate chip cookie, Ruth Wakefield, sold the idea to Nestlé for a lifetime

supply of chocolate instead of money. The creation was made at Ruth’s inn, called Toll House Inn. Ruth was making biscuits when she discovered she did not have enough baker’s chocolate. She then used Nestlé’s semi-sweet chocolate, expecting the chocolate to melt. Ruth originally called the biscuits ‘Toll House crunch biscuits’. Nestlé changed the name when the recipe was bought.

4 December is the beginning of the cacao season in Ghana, the world’s second largest producer

of cacao.

5 Dark chocolate is said to have an anti-bacterial effect on the mouth and contains anti-bacterial

agents that fight tooth decay. Unfortunately the amount of sugar in commercially manufactured

chocolate contributes to tooth decay in such a way that the effects of the antibacterial agent are minimised.

6 Chocolate makers use up to 40% of the world’s almonds and 20% of the world’s peanuts.

7 Gold-covered chocolate coins traditionally given to children on Christmas Day

commemorate St Nicholas, who was said to give bags of gold to the poor.

8 The Christmas log, also known as the bûche de Noël, is a sponge cake covered in chocolate. It

was first made by a Parisian baker around 1870. The log is also made using buttercream, which creates a texture resembling bark. The bûche de Noël is the highlight of the French Christmas meal.

9 The word ‘chocolate’ originates from the Aztec word xocolatl meaning ‘bitter water’.

10 The difference between cocoa powder and cacao powder is that cacao is used in its raw

form and made into a powder whereas cocoa is roasted at high temperatures before being made into a powder. The words are often used interchangeably when referring to the beans.

Irving Berlin is considered one of the greatest songwriters in American history. He penned hundreds of songs before he was just 30 years old. It is estimated that he wrote around 1,500 songs during his 60-year career. This includes the scores for 19 Broadway shows and 18 Hollywood movies, and he was nominated for an Academy Award eight times. When he got the idea for White Christmas, he knew he was on to something. With the song in his head, he called his secretary and told her: “Grab your pen and take down this song; I just wrote the best song I’ve ever written. Heck, I just wrote the best song that anybody’s ever written!” He wasn’t far from wrong in thinking that, as White Christmas became a huge hit. In fact, it is by far the bestselling Christmas song of all time. The most well-known version of the song, performed by Bing Crosby, was released in 1942, and every Christmas after that, sales of the song spiked again. It appeared on Billboard charts every year, and only dropped off the top 100 in 1963.

Guinness World Records also at one point named it the bestselling song of all time, until Elton John released his tribute to Princess Diana, Candle in the Wind.

Dropped verseWhite Christmas was featured in the 1942 movie, Holiday Inn, in which Bing Crosby sings it from the perspective of a New Yorker stranded in sunny California over Christmas. In the film, the song begins with the following verse: “The sun is shining, the grass is green/ The orange and palm trees sway/ There’s never been such a day/ In Beverly Hills, LA/ But it’s December the 24th/ And I long to be up north.” But when Bing Crosby recorded it for release a few months before the movie hit the theatre, his producer, Jack Kapp, advised him to drop this original first verse, as it made no sense outside of the plot of the movie. From then on, the song started as we know it, with the familiar line, “I’m dreaming of a white Christmas.”

Still on the subject of movies, by 1954, the song was such a huge holiday favourite that Paramount Pictures took the opportunity to cash in on it. They released a movie called White Christmas, starring Danny Kaye and Bing Crosby who, of course, performed this famous song in the movie.

Notable coversIt seems that everyone wanted a piece of White Christmas’ success, and it became the most recorded Christmas song ever. There are over 500 different recorded versions of the song in a variety of different languages. They include the following:

• In 2011, the song was recorded by three artists, namely Michael Bublé, Sheryl Crow and Lady Gaga. Lady Gaga’s version includes an original verse in which she jokes, “Okay, I suppose it’s not very white outside yet.”

• In 2012, Rod Stewart recorded the song for his holiday album, Merry Christmas, Baby. In this year, the song was also recorded by Glee cast members Darren Criss and Chris Colfer for Glee’s Christmas episode, Glee, Actually.

• In 2013, the song was covered by a variety of big names, including Bad Religion, Kelly Clarkson, Leona Lewis, Erasure, Iggy Pop, and Keith Urban, who played a live version of the hit.

Elvis causes controversyIn 1957, Elvis Presley recorded this song along with other holiday favourites for his Elvis’ Christmas Album. While many artists would consider it an honour to have Presley sing their song, Irving Berlin was apparently rather disgusted, and was quoted as calling the Elvis version a “profane parody of his cherished Yuletide standard.” He claimed to have ordered his staff to call radio stations and ask them not to play this version of the song. And while there were, of course, people who didn’t like it, there was nothing particularly offensive about Elvis’ version. Therefore, it is thought that this was possibly nothing more than a publicity stunt, both for the song itself and for Elvis’ new album – a successful one too, as Elvis’ Christmas Album stayed at number one for four weeks in a row.

If you’re reading this during the ‘silly season’, chances are you’re already ‘all Christmassed out’. With festive marketing campaigns starting earlier every year, you’ve probably already been inundated with merry messages since September.

This in itself isn’t a terrible thing for those who are not averse to Boney M and tinsel. The problem exists in the underlying message: if you haven’t started planning your Christmas from September, it may be too late to have a good one. At the rate things happen these days, most of us have to make our holiday arrangements months in advance or risk staying home over December. In fact, if it’s currently December, you should already be thinking about your Easter vacation.

The result is a life lived three months in the future ... which doesn’t give us much opportunity to enjoy the present. The challenge lies in overcoming the nagging feeling that you have to plan for the present – which can only be done by tapping into the constant stream

of information being fed through your phone, your laptop, or your tablet. Little wonder the world is filled with people who are permanently plugged into some sort of electronic device when they’re supposed to be enjoying the company of the people around them. They’re either trying to make sure that their next gathering is perfect, or sharing their current fabulous event on Instagram.

Of course, we all see the irony in this, but who can admit they don’t do it? We’re so busy trying to run 60 seconds of distance into every unforgiving minute, that we don’t stop and smell the roses (apologies to Mr Kipling). When life travels at the speed of Twitter, it’s easy to get caught up in the rush. To be honest, I now rely on social media to remind me of all the great times I’ve had – last week’s glorious beach holiday would be a foggy memory if I hadn’t uploaded the photos to Facebook.

So what causes this unnatural amnesia? Probably the fact that if anything moves faster than our social lives, it’s our working lives. If you haven’t been responding to email from your deckchair, you’ll be so far behind deadline when you get back to the office that your next getaway will include a straitjacket. One deadline rolls into the next, projects merge into one another, and we live in a perpetual state of preparation for the next big thing. We’ve effectively negated the present in our quest to make tomorrow perfect ... which we don’t enjoy, because we’re working on the day after.

Perhaps in a world of ‘faster, better, more’ the answer is to slow down. Smell those darn roses; enjoy that sunset – even if Google says the view is better from somewhere else. No matter how much you plan or how fast you work, the moment you are having right now is as good as it’s going to get.
