The Color of the SKY in My WorldIt’s all colours, really. As many colours as there are rainbows. As many hues as their are shades. There are as many colours as there are possibilities, and as many possibilities as there are dreams. Summer is the time for dreaming and exploring under the expansive, ever changing sky.

Producing SKY Magazine is more like following the sky as it literally takes on a life of its own with

each and every contributor. Now my third issue since becoming the new publisher, I have noticed a common thread among the people of these pages: what they imagine, becomes; what they believe, manifests; what they intend, they do.

SKY Magazine celebrates amazing people and the things they do. I promise you will be inspired, entertained, touched and excited about the summer SKY.

You will want to shop all day and dine out under the stars. You will get new home fever. You will look at fashion and local design from a new perspective. You will dare to wish and dream to be. You will want a really big sign, and yes, you will need air conditioning as the temperature rises this summer.

There are never enough pages to tell you all that I would love to say about the people I meet in creating SKY. And that’s why there will always be another SKY. Have a fabulous summer and see you in the fall.

Life is about making memories with those who enrich our lives and help us to accomplish our goals. I enjoy working with non-profits as their Chartered Accountant. Together, we have travelled the journey of accounting, auditing, assurance and governance.

Life is a balance of doing the things I love to do and spending time with my friends and family who feeds my soul. My family continues to inspire my way ahead, as does my friend Red, a 5 year-old 590 kilogram gelding who, at times, challenges me and teaches me about building relationships and being the kind of person that I aspire to be.

Since Red and I began this journey together, we have learned from each

other. There have been days when, despite my best intentions to spend time with Red, other things got in the way, like the weather and other commitments. When Red and I are able to spend time together, I learn that having a mutually successful relationship takes time, energy, and sacrifice.

It’s summer time, and I am looking forward to hitting the trail with my trusty steed Red. We will build some memories and learn from each other no doubt. I hope you are able to spend some time under the sun with those who inspire the way ahead.

hat says determination to change the home building industry in Regina. Katrina Stettner’s energy and exuberance explains how this small Regina company is contributing to a strong and thriving housing industry and setting the bar on a different kind of experience.

Harmony Builders is owned and operated by husband and wife team, Matt Rogina and Katrina Stettner. They share a passion to build homes with heart and style for all sizes and budgets.

rea Harbus, aMarantH designs: “I was inspired by some of the designs that were popular in the 70’s, such as my pant jumper and culotte’s jumpsuit as well as my 70’s pantsuit. I selected fabrics in neutral tones, charcoal grey, beige, blacks and creams. I used a nature photo fabric for a bit of colour and a black with gold metallic for my evening pieces. The gold sequin evening dress was a bit out of my comfort zone as I am very conservative with my designs. I believe it complimented my collection.” www.amaranthdesigns.ca

beryl Wong, beryl Wong designs: “My autumn / winter 2013 collection was inspired by the movie ‘In the Mood for Love’, a film set in Hong Kong in the 1960’s. I was inspired by both the costuming and the melancholy mood of the movie. Desiree Rattray is a mom on a mission. Eleven months ago, William was born unable to breathe and eat at the same time. Baby Will is still being fed by a tube in his stomach.

Desiree has carried and rocked her baby through four surgeries in Regina and Edmonton, while finding the time to care for Oakley, a five year little girl who had to grow up a little faster with

says “SKY” to cover the glass walls in my office? “The sky is the limit”, says Dennis Ermel, CEO of PrintWest / Mister Print. “We just got bigger and better.”

PrintWest/ Mister Print can bring almost any surface to life in a big way. The Saskatchewan based company operating in Regina and Saskatoon has recently acquired a high resolution, wide format printer with white ink and varnish options suitable for indoor and outdoor projects.

“Our wide format printer can produce images on just about anything flat up to two inches thick,” explains Murray Timm, Mister Print Operations Manager in Saskatoon where the printer is located.

The possibilities are endless: foam core, coreoplast, vinyl banners, clear / frosted backlit film, any colour styrene, dibond, vehicle window perf, metal and acrylic, glass, mirror, vinyl, leather, paper, cardboard, carpet and vinyl flooring.

“Just recently, we printed a 15 foot double sided banner to mark the start and finish line for Mayor Fougere’s first annual ‘Mayor’s Run/Walk for Fitness’ in Regina on June 9. We also created large format signage for the Juno Awards.”

A file is transferred to the machine digitally. White ink allows the plotter to print on dark coloured stock. The ink can be applied over an entire background or used just behind other colours. Varnish can be used to highlight certain areas of print, giving a glossy, raised finish on a smooth surface. It can be printed over colours or simply used on its own for a dramatic and creative look. The new printer can print flat material up to 96.4” x 49.2” as well as rolled materials up to 86.6” wide.

“In addition to large format printing, we serve the short run sheet-fed business and medium runs and our web press can do printing runs. Digital printing on the iGen4 has evolved allowing us to create very sharp imagery. Printing with white ink and varnish is an example of the expanded technology, ” says Ken Benson, Vice President of Sales and Marketing.

“There will always be a place for printing tangible products, such as signage, magazines, pop up banners, coasters, folders, books and other types of publications.“

A few nights ago, I dreamt that I was walking through a farmer’s field, when I came to an area where the land had subsided, leaving a cave in the earth. Looking into the cave, I could see an underground river, teeming with fish. The bodies of the fish flashed silver as they swam over and above each other, so thick that you could almost walk on the water, across the fish. A voice said to me, “What a treasure this is! Be careful not to over-fish.”

I woke up, with a strong sense that this was a significant dream; one that needed to be remembered.

The Grand Banks of Newfoundland used to have cod this thick. Millions, multiplied billions of cod – so thick you could almost walk on the water across their bodies. It was one of the natural wonders of the world. But we took it for granted. We over-fished; we allowed the fishing fleets of the world to over-fish. The cod stocks collapsed, and have never recovered. A natural treasure of our nation is gone.

What are the treasures of Canada that we take for granted? Our families, the natural beauty of that surrounds us, fresh water, our health, the ability to work and earn an income, and the fact that we enjoy a democratic government that allows us both personal and economic freedom are some that come to mind.

Not everyone has such blessings. There are nations in the world where water is neither abundant nor clean; where the opportunities we take for granted such as free education and medical care are nothing more than a dream.

We enjoy a justice and banking system that is trustworthy and largely free from corruption. Yes, we tell lawyer jokes, but imagine living in a country where there could be no possible redress if a neighbour cheated one. Where it goes as a matter of course that the police would beat, imprison, or even kill you if you dared to raise a concern. Where everyone keeps their money under a mattress, because if you put it in the bank, you’ll never see it again.

Let us hold these treasures with both appreciation, and great care, lest our casual assumptions that they will always be there, leads to their loss.

Doing Business by CloudChecks’n’Balances adopted cloud technology in 2009 so that we could become more efficient. We soon saw the benefits and began offering this service to our clients for bookkeeping and payroll. If you are considering adopting cloud based computing, here are some things we have learned.

Halle has a wish. At 13 years of age, her wish is so big, it’s possible that it will transcend all other wishes she’s ever had. She loves fashion, makeup, shoes and travel. The sky’s the limit for Halle because she lives in possibility like most 13 year-old girls.

Halle was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease when she was seven years old. She has endured two surgeries, one in Regina and one in Calgary, along with several separate hospitalizations, and countless outpatient procedures. Halle needs ongoing medication to help control the Crohn’s Disease and finding the right mix was a very big challenge, explains her mom, Heather.

“When she gets sick, her entire world stops”, says Heather. “Sometimes, I would just watch the kids outside playing and I wish Halle could just be a child and not have to endure the pain of this disease.”

“Just last winter Halle’s weight was down to 50 pounds. She is doing very well now, and looking forward to graduation from grade eight and starting high school with her twin brother.”

Halle is just one of the thousands of children each year with a life threatening illness and who dare to wish. Since 1984, The Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada has worked tirelessly to grant exceptional wishes to 19,000 children between the ages of three and 17 and their families. This year, the Saskatchewan Chapter expects to grant 60 new wishes.

“We have never refused a wish to an eligible child. With the help of volunteers and generous donors, we are able to grant one wish per week. Each wish is an individual adventure, carefully structured to meet the needs of the child and family. The Foundation has chapters in every province and territory,” says Gay Oldhaver, Executive Director of the Saskatchewan Chapter.

“Granting a wish for the children is a symbol of hope and healing, “ says Deanne Guest, Fundraising Co-ordinator in Regina. “We want the people of Saskatchewan to know that there are children’s wishes to be granted and that we are asking for your help by participating in the Wishmaker Walk for Wishes on September 22, 2013 and Regina Exhile Island Event in 2014. We will be sharing the story of our wish children in SKY Magazine each quarter with the help of sponsors from the business community like HK Insurance, SGI and SKY Magazine. Please get involved and help make a child’s wish come true.”
