WHAT IS SKYBUS ?

Sky bus is a suspended railway system, can never capsize nor collide due to its design and construction technique .

A unique mass transit system which than can be put up within any two years in any crowded and congested city for safe transportation without loss of time.”

The sky bus technology offered by Konkani railway corporation . It redefines the thinking and planning for urban transport being eco-friendly.

Pre-fabricated latest construction technologies, which save time and money

resulting in easy execution of the project in busy urban areas without disturbing the existing traffic pattern

COMPONENTS OF SKYBUS :

I. Sky Way

II. Sky Bogies

III. Sky Coaches

IV. Sky Stations

V. Traverse Arrangements

Page 6: Sky bus an emerging technology

I . SKY WAY Path in which Sky Bus travels Includes concrete box carried over a series of piers at a

height of about 10m above existing road level Two rails are appropriately fixed to guide the bus

Page 7: Sky bus an emerging technology

II . SKY BOGIES Two Standard axle bogies provide the drive mechanism Each bogie is driven by 3-phase alternating current (AC) motor. Speed of 100 kmph (max. 160 kmph) Disc & Emergency brakes is used Power is delivered using brushes or by current carrying wheels

Page 8: Sky bus an emerging technology

III . SKY COACHES Double walled lightweight shells with wide large windows and suspended

below rails Air conditioned coaches and have 4m wide

and automatic doors Audio visual information to passengers 2m x 2m space for easy entry & exit Each coach carries 150 passengers Each coach is 9.25m long and 3.2 m wide Consist of two coaches, with total length of

18.5m.

Page 9: Sky bus an emerging technology

IV . SKY STATIONS Sky Stations where sky buses halt Have automatic doors and Lift Smaller area consumption Fully computerized Entry only by electronic swiping cards Lifted 5.5 – 6m above Ground Level

Page 10: Sky bus an emerging technology

V . TRAVERSE ARRANGEMENTS There are no points and crossings Automatically shifts the skybus units for balancing loads or change of

roots The traverser acts like a station.

Page 11: Sky bus an emerging technology

WORKING PRINCIPLE : As long as the wheels are on the

rails, the coach runs. But failure of rails / obstruction by

a heavy wind force may create

dangerous situations When the wheels climb 25 to 30 mm

flange , then derailment occurs

Page 12: Sky bus an emerging technology

If derailment occurs, then there is

nothing to hold the coach, then the

coach just topples.

Such falling of coach can kill people inside the coach and also people on the road, if any

Page 13: Sky bus an emerging technology

WHY SKYBUS ???? Conventional railway provides

for heavy steel coaches to protect people .

So carry more steel and dead weight instead of people.

With total weight of 48T, a railway can carry only 70 persons in 20mLength

But for metro it costs about 230

corers and for underground

metro it costs about 398-400

cores

Sky Bus has no such problem, no derailment nor capsizing; hence uses very light weight coaches and carries more people.

It uses much less dead weight Sky Bus with the same weight

& length carries 300 persons comfortably

The approximate construction cost for skybus is about 45-50 corers/km

Page 14: Sky bus an emerging technology

SAILENT FEATURES :

i. Pollution free

ii. Noise free

iii. Economical

iv. Air Conditioned Travel

v. Can carry 36000 persons per hour (pph)

vi. Can be extended to 72000 pph

vii. Can shift 20ft containers for corner to corner.

Page 15: Sky bus an emerging technology

SAFETY MEASURES :

Safety airbags are provided with each coach Compared to conventional railway systems, the centre of gravity of the

mass being carried on the wheels is brought down to be closer to the wheel support. Hence dynamic safety is many times improved

In conventional railway wind can topple the trains. In Sky Bus wind cannot topple- there is positive link between the rail guidance system and the Bus Coaches- with 400%.

Sky Bus- eliminating the problems of existing metro rail systems

like derailments, collisions, capsizing and crushing people.

Page 16: Sky bus an emerging technology

ADVANTAGES :

Fast transportation Mass Transport No land acquisition problem No demolition No vandalism No capsizing Tourism Low capital and running cost Luxury

No deaths due to trespassing Low maintainance cost No interference with normal

traffic Can be built on existing flyover No pollution Comfort to passengers No derailment problem Fire Protection

Page 17: Sky bus an emerging technology

DISADVANTAGES :

Consume High Electricity High Initial Cost

But instead of thermal power plant use of hydraulic power plant can

produce more electricity .

Page 18: Sky bus an emerging technology

SKYBUS IN NEAR FUTURE :

As it saves 50% - 70% of the cost it is seen as the future of metro. The authorities in Mumbai set up with the idea to consider setting up a

sky bus system on a 9.8 km sketch between Andheri and Ghatkopur . To the Tamil Nadu Government, has presented a possible route network

between Muthialpet in North Chennai to Athipet in the west — via Koyambedu — and Mahabalipuram 45 km South

The sky bus is proposed by Indian railways in India in following cities Hyderabad , Pune , Mumbai, Bangalore ,Chennai , Delhi, etc.

Page 19: Sky bus an emerging technology

CONCLUSION : Research confirms that advantages of sky bus technology are

tremendous. For overpopulated Indian urban areas, sky bus seems to be

the best solution for safe, quality, and inexpensive mass public

transportation.

Indian state governments and metro city corporations are waiting for

final approval from experts. If sky bus project receives approval by

experts for its track tests, sky bus will become the solution for urban

public transportation in 21st century, at least for India.  Ultimately life is more precious than any other thing hence we need to

give safer transportation facility along with it economy also play important role.
