Time Management Skills

People who get things done are people who know how to manage their time. This means knowing the difference between important and urgent.

Some things are neither, and some are one, but not the other.

How do you manage your time between school, homework, part-time jobs, chores, friends, family, sports, etc? What do you have left to due before the Holiday

Break? Which are important? Urgent?

Time Management Tips

Spend time on important things before they become urgent.

Don’t be ruled by urgency – never avoid important activities because of merely urgent tasks. Don’t leave things to the last minute.

Do important things early. Waiting until they’re urgent will only increase your stress level. Keep up on daily homework and assignments.

Number your tasks in order of their importance. Complete them in that order. Create a “to do list” for the semester, or month, or week.

The level of organization depends of the person – but it is important for everyone.

The “basics”: Know how to find something when you need

it. Remember to do something that you’re

supposed to do.

Communication Skills

Some important skills: Active Listening – Encourages others to talk to

you in a way that ensures that you understand well what they’re trying to say.

Paraphrasing – Put what you heard into your own words.

Clarifying – Ask for more details. Body Language – Encourages communication.

How will these make you a better communicator?

Feedback

Feedback comes to you in many ways and can be about both your strengths and weaknesses. Being able to take both types – especially

constructive criticism – will help you improve yourself.

Being “coachable” means that someone pay attention to instruction and suggestions, and takes this information as an attempt to improve. If you don’t listen, you won’t improve. Don’t make an “enemy” of your coach – make

him/her your “ally”.

Negotiating

A negotiation is a discussion designed to result in an agreement.

Conflict resolution is a process designed to bring together people or groups who have disagreed and been hostile.

Creating win-win solutions are a great outcome of a negotiation. Use active listening; Find out what is really important to the people involved; Get the people to talk, and listen, to each other; Make sure everybody gets a say in the discussion; Look for solutions no one has thought of yet; Make sure everybody agrees with the solution.
