EXPLANATORY NOTES
1. Reason for Registering for the Practical Phase Training Candidates interested in registering for the practical phase training at Skills Priority do so to qualify as Diesel Mechanic
(Artisan). The Training Paths map out the possible routes that may be followed to become a qualified Artisan. Ultimately
all learners pursuing an Artisan will have to do a qualifying trade test at an Accredited Decentralized Trade Test Centre
(DCTTC).
The practical training component(s) is compulsory for all learners to qualify for the final trade test.
2. Training Paths Learners may follow a full apprenticeship as Contracted learner which takes at least 2 years and maximum 4 years to
complete depending on individual readiness profile
Learners with extensive relevant Diesel Mechanic experience may qualify for ARPL which must be completed in 12 month
from registration
3. Optional Learners may also do the Phase (1-2-3) or specific components (short programs which is trade aligned) to acquire applied
knowledge as semi-skilled worker
4. Duration of Practical Training Contracted learners must do the Phase 1, 2 and 3 practical training covering the full scope of practical training in
accordance with the Diesel Mechanic training schedule which:
Phase 1 duration: 10 weeks
Phase 2 duration: 10 weeks
Phase 3 duration: 12 weeks
The duration of training for ARPL candidates (experienced workers) is a 12 week power course and all ARPL Candidates
will be subjected to a gap evaluation to establish current skills levels
Employed learners may split each practical training phase up in smaller chunks of at least 1 week at a time to meet
employer work demands
The final trade test (done at a DCTT) to qualify as Diesel Mechanic Artisan is not included; at this point in time Trade
Tests are done at The Automobile Association of South Africa in Parrow and an additional two weeks Trade Test
preparation is proposed: costs for prep and trade test is for the account of the learner.
5. Certification The Red Seal Trade Certificate as qualified Diesel Mechanic Artisan is issued by the Quality Council for Trades and
Occupations (QCTO) upon successful completion of the qualifying Trade test at a DCTTC. The red seal certificate is a
formal qualification marking the final step to becoming qualified artisan.
Skills Priority as accredited Skills Development Provider shall issue learners that successfully accomplished the learning
outcomes specified for each Phase in pursuit of a qualifying trade test with a Statement of results serving evidence of
progress.
6. Training Fees Diesel Mechanic practical training schedule which:
Phase 1 duration: 10 weeks: R 18 066.00 plus VAT
Phase 2 duration: 10 weeks R 18 066.00 plus VAT
Phase 3 duration: 12 weeks R 18 066.00 plus VAT
12 week power course for ARPL candidates R 18 066.00 plus VAT
Payment for training must be made in advance (upon registration - prior to commencement). Learners may however
arrange to pay the fees in two installments; 50% upon registration and the balance when completing 50% of the particular
Practical Training Phase.
Short courses i.e. 1 week training programs: R 1 806.60 plus VAT. Short courses must be paid in full prior to commencement of the practical training.
Trade Test Prep and Trade Test: costs for prep and trade test are for the account of the learner. Final trade test (done at a DCTT) to qualify as Diesel Mechanic Artisan are excluded from phase training and it may take an
additional two weeks.
N1 and N2 studies: cost to register for the relevant N course and exams are for the account of the learner and is excluded from the practical phase training at Skills Priority.
1. Managing the Apprenticeship All registered learners will get a personalized development plan which is tailored to fit the academic and skills profile of
each individual.
It is compulsory in terms of Section 11(3) of the Trade Test Regulations that all contracted learners must adhere to one of
the following academic requirements before being allowed to do a qualifying trade test:
*N2 Certificate including four relevant subjects (Maths, Science, Trade Theory and fourth trade related subject of choice)
Technical Trade Theory Programs quality assured by a SETA deemed to be equivalent to NQF Level 3
Relevant Engineering NCV 3 Certificate with seven subjects at NQF 3 level
Technical grade 11 with Maths, Science, Language and related Trade Theory
Relevant N6 Certificate or National Trade Diploma (T, S or N Stream)
*Skills Priority shall assist candidates to register for distance learning for the Nated (N 1 & 2) and facilitate the learning to
acquire the required N qualification.
2. Proof of Accreditation Skills Priority is an Accredited Training Provider with QCTO under the auspices of the NAMB (National Artisan Moderating
Body) as quality assurance body for all SETA’s and trades to offer the practical component of the Diesel Mechanic Training
in pursuit of a qualifying trade test.
The document following here below is issued by the QCTO and serves evidence that Skills Priority is accredited as Skills
Development Provider.
