Class Discussion

• Can anyone name any of the bones and show me where they are located?

Page 3: Skeletal System - Roanoke Collegewebapps.roanoke.edu/courses/educ/madavis/Skeletal System2...Skeletal System •The skeletal system is your body’s framework, and is an internal system

Do Now!!

• On page 369, Figure 15.1, draw or trace the skeleton in your notes and label

all the bone on the left side of the page.

Skeletal System

• The skeletal system is your body’s framework, and is an internal system made

up of bones, joints, and connective tissue.

• 206 bones in your body

Functions

• Allows movement: attachment sites for your muscles to make your body move

• Provides support: backbone (vertebrae) is made of 24 bones which support your

head and upper body and protects your spinal cord

• Protects other parts of your body: protects your organs, brain, your lungs and

your heart

• Forms new blood cells: red and white in the marrow of your bones.

• Stores minerals: like calcium and phosphorus

Joints

• Where your bones meet

• Some move in one direction and some have a wide range of motion

• Different types of joints

Page 7: Skeletal System - Roanoke Collegewebapps.roanoke.edu/courses/educ/madavis/Skeletal System2...Skeletal System •The skeletal system is your body’s framework, and is an internal system

Different Types of Joints

• Hinge Joints: elbows and knees, which move in only one direction

• Gliding Joints: wrists and ankles, bones which slide over each other

• Pivot Joints: between your neck and head, side to side and up and down

movements and allows for limited rotation

• Ball-in-Socket Joints: hips and shoulders, move in all directions, allows for

rotation

Connective Tissues

• Cartilage: strong, flexible tissue and provides cushioning for your joints

(nose and ears)

• Ligaments: connect bone to bone

• Tendons: connect muscle to bone

Problems of the Skeletal System

• Fracture

• Dislocation

• Sprain

• Osteoarthritis

• Scoliosis

• Osteoporosis

Fracture

• Break in the bone

• Swelling occurs

• Pain

Dislocation

• Bone is pushed out of its joint

• Stretching or tearing or a ligament

Page 12: Skeletal System - Roanoke Collegewebapps.roanoke.edu/courses/educ/madavis/Skeletal System2...Skeletal System •The skeletal system is your body’s framework, and is an internal system

Sprain

• Stretching or twisting of ligaments

• Swelling occurs

Osteoarthritis

• Breakdown of cartilage

• Causes swelling and stiffness of the

joints

• Caused by wear and tear

Page 14: Skeletal System - Roanoke Collegewebapps.roanoke.edu/courses/educ/madavis/Skeletal System2...Skeletal System •The skeletal system is your body’s framework, and is an internal system

Scoliosis

• Sideways curvature of the spine

• Cause is unknown

Page 15: Skeletal System - Roanoke Collegewebapps.roanoke.edu/courses/educ/madavis/Skeletal System2...Skeletal System •The skeletal system is your body’s framework, and is an internal system

Osteoporosis

• Brittle and porous bones

• Long term deficiencies of calcium

and certain hormones, vitamin D

and lack of exercise

Care of the Skeletal System

• Physical activity

• Eat foods high in calcium and phosphorus

• Sit, stand, and walk with good posture

• Pay attention to your shoes

• Wear your seat belt
