SJCCTV Program Guide

Introduction

Smithfield-Johnston Community College [SJCCTV18] is an Educational and Government access Television Station that is aired in Johnston County, North Carolina on Time Warner Cable Channel 18. The goal of SJCCTV is to provide programming that fits the educational and communication needs of the Smithfield-Johnston County community. The station is a cooperative effort between the Town of Smithfield, NC and Johnston Community College.

The station features local Town and College information bulletins, public service announcements, local weather and traffic, and the following government and educational programs:

Arts and Music: Alternate Root TV – American Roots Music Weekly

Alternative Root TV showcases music and artists in the American Roots format: Folk, Blues, Soul, Alt Country, Americana, Bluegrass and Zydeco. The show features in-studio performances, interviews and special segments such as Doin’ The Wash filmed in a variety of locations around North America.

Among the many guests who have visited the studio are James McMurtry, Raul Malo, Gretchen Peters, Ellis Paul and Dom Flemons (of The Carolina Chocolate Drops). Exclusive footage of live acoustic performances from Over The Rhine, YARN, Band of Heathens, Christine Ohlman, Duke Robillard, and many more are included in each episode. The Piano Guy

Scott Houston has been called “the Pied Piper of recreational music-making.” Since the debut of his highly successful public television special, Play Piano in a Flash! (also produced by Mills James), millions of viewers have been introduced to his motivational and entertaining approach to learning to play non-classical piano.

Now numbering more than 180 half-hour episodes, this Emmy Award-winning series has become “must-see” programming for music lovers and recreational music makers across the country. During each episode, Scott is usually joined by one of many talented guest pianists to discuss the breakdown of specific songs, genres, and other piano playing topics. Show Producer: Cheshire TV.

Kids a’ Cookin

Want a great way to spend time with your kids? Tired of macaroni and cheese with hot dogs being the only secret recipe you have? Dust off your countertops, tie on your apron and introduce your “Small Fry” to the educational and fun world of cooking. Even if they have only mastered Kool-Aid®, you and your kids can expand your cooking skills with the help of these kitchen-tested and approved recipes.

Follow Host (and Mom) Karen Arnold, as she leads school-age children step-by-step in preparing nutritious, delicious, but most of all, fun recipes. Each week, pint-sized chefs will help prepare a different recipe that can easily be made in your own home. Culture and Travel: European Journal

Fifty-two times a year, DW-TV provides viewers worldwide with a fascinating mix of stories exploring the important political, economic and cultural developments in Europe. European Journal is a 30 minute magazine that delivers the inside take – reports on important political, economic and cultural developments in the EU with a strong focus on the European integration process.

European Journal keeps you informed about life in Europe. The magazine covers news from the International War Crimes Tribunal to reports on Belgian pommes frites vendors, from the efforts to get the European constitution off the ground to the end of traditional fox hunts in Britain. Be it the influence of the Mafia or the success of young Estonian entrepreneurs.

Each week presenters Cathy Smith and Jim Gibbons provide their unique take on stories unfolding across the Atlantic, telling the story with compelling video, strong reporting, and a good sense of humor.

In a video-rich weekly magazine, hosted by Journalist Michaela Küfner, Global 3000 provides in depth analysis, investigative reporting, and portraits of people who are making a difference on the planet.

And what do sheep in New Zealand have to do with climate change? We live in a globalized world. Events in Asia have repercussions in Europe. European reactions have knock-on effects in South America. Travel Television

Travel Television is a new magazine series that will explore the news and events in the travel industry and the impact that these events have on the traveling public. This half-hour program will explore changes in technology, regulations, and products and services designed with the traveler in mind. Feature Films:

A Gift for the Village

"A Gift for the Village," features artist Jane Lillian Vance's 13,000-mile journey to Nepal to deliver her 7 foot tall portrait honoring Buddist monk Tsampa Ngawant Lama.

A Smithfield native, Vance was a Johnston Community College guest and honored SJCCTV with an interview to preface her film. Her artwork was also on display in JCC’s Frank Creech Art Gallery.

We hope you'll enjoy this wonderful story of the painting, the trek to Nepal, and the resulting festival.

Government:

Welcome to your County

Welcome to Your County is a monthly program that highlights the services offered by counties for their citizens. Each monthly episode includes reports from various counties on different county departments, such as the Register of Deeds, Solid Waste, Sheriff, Tax Office, etc. Each episode also includes information about the history of North Carolina counties.

Smithfield, NC Town Council Meetings

Smithfield operates under the council-manager form of government. The town council has eight members, including the mayor and meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:30 pm at the Town Hall. Four council members are elected from specific geographical districts and three are elected at-large. Town Council meetings air on SJCCTV each month. Show Producer: Town of Smithfield.

Home Improvement and Hobbies:

The Garage with Steve Butler

Steve Butler is an artist and furniture maker with more than 20 years’ experience in the field. In his garage workshop, he'll share with you the way to make fun, funky projects without having all the fancy expensive shop tools of the other shows. Anything from fine furniture to cool, artsy objects are what he's making. The Garage is a how-to show unlike any other.

Hot and Cold

Hot and Cold is about building and renovating houses as well as updating with new types of insulation and alternative energy. It's somewhat the tone of a This Old House, but in Hot and Cold, the host, Tom Gocze, is the expert and does the work. Tom gets his hands dirty as he explains how homeowners can do a lot of the work themselves or be more knowledgeable if they were to hire someone.

All Aboard

All Aboard (series 1) was produced in the 1990’s by Green Frog Productions of Douglasville Georgia. The half-hour weekly show was produced with the railroad enthusiast in mind and covers railroad operations over the last half of the 20th century across much of The United States.

Focus on JCC is originally produced at Johnston Community College by the Jaguar Office of Learning Technologies. The news show features guest interviews with College faculty and members of the Johnston County community. Topics range from local industry to special College events.

Johnston Community College’s annual May commencement exercises and induction ceremonies are aired on SJCCTV twice per day during the latter part of May and the month of June. For families of students outside Johnston County, the commencement exercises are also streamed live at during graduation, and are available on demand www.johnstoncc.eduthereafter.

JCC Live is a monthly student-based news program that is written, directed and produced by students at Johnston Community College. JCCLive is a visionary program that includes feature stories and interviews with JCC students, conversations with administrators and faculty, and one-on-one interviews with nationally recognized performers such as singer/songwriter Arlo Guthrie and American Idol alumni James Durbin.

Country Music Showcase

The Country Music Showcase at Johnston Community College’s Paul A. Johnston Auditorium features aspiring artists performing in a state-of-the-art facility with a professional band and back-up singers in a 2 day-multiple show stint. Shows are produced and subsequently aired 5 times a year. Auditions are held yearly and attract talented performers from North Carolina and surrounding states. Clay Aiken, Scotty McCreery, Dakota Hood, and Adam Barbour have all performed on the CMS stage. Guest performers sing together in multiple group numbers and each performs a solo.

Green Revolution

Coming up with better ways to get where we need to go and power the lives we live requires creativity, ingenuity and hard work. As part of the "Green Revolution" series we visited researchers all over the country and asked lots of questions about the energy, fuels and technologies they are working on to make our lives better in the future.

Along the way we also learned a lot about what makes careers in science, engineering and other technologies fun and interesting. Some of the answers to our questions were really cool. Some were clever. Others were completely crazy, but one thing was for sure-everyone we talked to was excited about our future in a world powered by clean energy. SEA Inside Pacific Northwest

"SEA-Inside: Pacific Northwest" is a bimonthly TV journey to meet our neighbors who live below the surface of Pacific Northwest waters. Through the magic of underwater video, you'll see surprising colors and contrasts, cold-water creatures seldom seen on TV that look like they might have come from outer-space.

Each episode of this magazine style show includes several short videos from a variety of sources, from recreational divers to NOAA. "SEA-Inside: Pacific Northwest" recently won a national Hometown Video award: "Best Magazine Show -- Professional" from the Alliance for Community Media.

National Science Foundation News

Science Behind The News is a relatively new, fast-paced video series supported by NSF that explores the science, technology, engineering and mathematics behind current events. Each video features at least one interview with an NSF-funded scientist or researcher.

The videos highlight work funded by NSF's Directorate for Mathematical and Physical Sciences. The scope of scientific and educational activity supported in the directorate is enormous, ranging from phenomena at cosmological distances, to environmental science on the human scale, through quantum mechanical processes in atomic and subatomic physics, to phenomena of the unimaginably small.
