We were the first to produce an off the peg touring bike, designed specifically and sensibly for the Rohloff Speedhub. Our bikes had much praise lavished on them.
Many testers said (and I have to agree) that our bikes were better thought out, better built and were better to ride, than custom built bikes costing more than twice as much.
I’m amazed that, considering the way these bikes have been received, we still appear to be the only manufacturer who is determined to produce bikes that are optimised for using a Rohloff hub, in real world situations. Our latest machine, the RAVEN is a blend of the Raven Tour and the Raven Sport Tour.
The Raven’s capable of expedition touring but the THORN NOMAD is a better choice for serious or regular expeditions.
The Raven’s fairly sporty but a THORN MERCURY is a better bike for genuine high performance cycling. ###### The RAVEN may not excel at either extreme of touring styles - where it does excel is in its versatility - we believe that the RAVEN is the most versatile bicycle on the market.
It can carry heavy camping kit .
It’s very stable and mild mannered - it takes bridleways and tow paths in its stride.
It is fast enough for brisk commuting and it’s reliable enough to make sure you arrive on time.
It’s designed to give a lifetime’s service.
Having Rohloff gears makes it inexpensive to run, ultra-reliable and very easy to service.

THORN RAVEN
SIZE
475M
The RAVEN frames are made from exactly the same
tube sets, in exactly the same sizes as the Mk3 Sherpa frames. The frame fittings, drop outs, bottom bracket shells and cable runs are completely different though. The Sherpa is optimised for derailleur gears, whilst the RAVEN is specifically designed for Rohloff. You’ll soon spot that the drop bar size 475M is not a Raven - it’s a Sherpa - I’ll replace this pic when I get the opportunity.
RAVEN STEP THROUGH FRAMES
UPGRADE TO EX BOX HUB
Only suitable for ST Ravens
Our step through (ST) frames need to have the gear cables routed under the BB. (There’s no top tube!). We have a solution, which allows us to use the standard Rohloff hub and to therefore maintain the same start price for these bikes; but this leaves the exposed section of the gear cables in the dirtiest part of the bike.
With ST frames we strongly recommend spending
the extra money and having the EX box hub, which is more suited to this cable routing. You’ll see the upgrade to this in the MEGA BROCHURE on page 67.
Standard components
on Raven bikes.
Although customers select most of the components used to build their bikes, many components are not considered and their quality is simply taken for granted. We use a really high quality FSA Orbit headset with aerospace bearings. We use a nice quality alloy stem. The BB unit on bikes with Thorn Chain set is a good quality item, that will give long service. You may choose silver, black or red for your
Rohloff hub. All of our spokes are top quality double butted 14/16 gauge stainless steel as specified by Rohloff for their hubs. The Standard chain is a top quality KMC Rohloff-specific chain. We use Shimano stainless brake inners and Shimano brake outer. We use Rohloff stainless gear inners and outer casing. The default option is for a 17t rear sprocket.
You’ll find all the OPTIONS, UPGRADES, ACCESSORIES and Order FORM in PART 2 of the THORN MEGA BROCHURE - the link to this is on the front page.

These bikes are both SIZE 420S-T with ST 26 forks. Most customers have their 420 S-T set up somewhere between these two extremes.
This photo shows our demo bike set up to be suitable for somebody around 5'10" (1778mm). It
has the steerer tube left at full length. We could fit an even longer and/or higher rise stem and/or comfort bars if you wished. The 350mm seat post is at full height but we can fit a 400mm post if required.
This photo shows the same bike but this time set up to be suitable for somebody around 5'0" (1524mm). The stem is as low as it will go. (I doctored the pic to remove the excess steerer). The saddle is still not as low as it could be! This is our demo bike - if we didn’t need to have the bars higher, for other customers, we’d have actually cut the steerer and shortened the cables - which are way too long as illustrated.

Max Load Using Rear Panniers, 2kg bar bag + 3 cages.
The RAVEN frames are built from Thorn 969 seamless, cold drawn, heat treated butted Cro-mo in 0.9/0.6/0.9mm gauge.
Small frames have a 25.4mm top tube, and a 28.6mm down tube.
Medium size frames have a 28.6mm top tube and a 31.8mm down tube.
Large frames have a 31.8mm top tube and a 34.9mm down tube.
All frame sizes use 28.6mm seat tubes and 16mm heavy gauge seat stays.
The RAVEN has a choice of Super Tourist or competition gauge 853 forks.
FORK OPTIONS
The Raven has a choice of steel forks.
We have our ST 26 fork, which uses Reynolds Cr-Mo
blades and steerer in Super Tourist gauge. This fork has V brake bosses, Lo-Loader bosses and mudguard bosses. It also has bosses, under the cast fork crown, to screw the mudguards directly to the crown, which itself has an M6 boss to mount a dynamo headlamp. These forks are strong enough to accept 6Kg on each side of the fork.
We also have our RAV853VC fork, this uses
Reynolds 853 blades and steerer in Competition gauge, both these items are unique to Thorn.
RAV853VC forks are exceptionally comfortable,
due to the light gauge, fantastic highest quality steel and elegant tight radius bend but they are not designed to and must never be modified to, carry any luggage. The absence of Lo-Loader fittings gives them a very clean line. They do have stainless fittings for the direct mounting of mudguards and an M6 boss for a dynamo headlamp. The 853 blades and steerer are very expensive
items, consequently the RAV853VC fork is a
fairly expensive upgrade. See Mega Brochure page
89 for current upgrade cost.
[1] The RAVEN frames are built using one
of three different diameter tube sets. The small frames are built with, what were once known as “standard diameter” tubes. The medium frames are built with oversized diameter tubes and the large frames are built with extra oversized tubes. (For more information please see box below)
[2] Both of the fork options use a wide
cast fork crown, like the RST frames, for
those who are familiar with them, these
forks and the RAVEN frames have
clearances for tyres up to 2.0"
[3] The RAVEN frames can carry heavy
loads without drama, or speed wobbles, please see the matrix for precise details.
[4] The RAVEN can be built into a pretty
quick and nimble bike for general use, especially commuting. It is particularly good on rough and broken roads.
