A chance to handle a piece of the moon

DURING the autumn term the Academy tookpart in a walk to school campaign toencourage students to think about how theyget to and from school.

Now we’re asking parents and carers whodrop-off children at the start and end of theday to be aware that there are marked ‘NoParking’ areas close to the school gate.

It is dangerous to wait in these areas andcould lead to accidents. In addition, pleasedo not block residents’ driveways – or thehospital entrances.

If your child has a long journey and needsyour help in getting to school, please makeyour drop-off and collection point furtheraway from the school – a short walk isalways beneficial and will help ensure thatyour child is fully awake and ready to startthe school day.

THE Academy has already had anopportunity to welcome children fromNorton-le-Moors Primary, New FordPrimary, Burnwood Primary, Sneyd GreenPrimary, Whitfield Valley Primary,Smallthorne Primary and MoorparkJunior school.

Y1 children from Burnwood came touse our 4D Cinema to support their workon Jonah and the Whale. Burnwood staffadded their own drama and musicactivities. Saxon purses and fabricprinting captured the imagination of Y4children from Norton. They made theirown Saxon purses and used the fabricprinting equipment in the Textile Studioon their recent visit.

The Great Space Biscuit Bake-Off(pictured above) saw Sneyd Green Y5pupils baking and decorating spacethemed biscuits using lots of icing, sprinkles and chocolate stars.

All the sessions are tailored to meetcurriculum needs and also includedRoman coins, rockets, spooky stories,micro-organisms, chocolate, and kingsand queens.

Exciting timesfor primaryschool pupils

FIVE high-achieving Y9 students spent a day atthe University of Warwick last term as part ofthe Future Scholars initiative, which helpsstudents from areas such as Stoke-on-Trent toexperience what it would be like to study at aRussell Group university.

The Russell Group is a collection of 24universities from across the UK that are deemedto be the best in the country and some of thebest in the world. The list includes institutionssuch as Oxford, Cambridge, Durham,Manchester and Warwick.

Part of the day was spent in university-stylelectures and seminars, where the studentsjoined fellow Y9s from all over the countrylooking at challenging subjects such aspsychology and computer science.

Rebekah Mohring and Aimee Clayton saidafter their English session that they had found“discovering the thought and logic behind horrorfilms fascinating”, while Kacper Puk looked atthe enigmatic neutrino and through that “thefundamental ideas of Physics were reallyinteresting and inspiring.”

The University of Warwick is a campusuniversity – meaning that every facility and

amenity the students may need is on the site –and this impressed our young learners.

As well as the libraries and academicresources, current Warwick students revealedthat university life is also about making friendsand enjoying the experience of studying in aworld-class institution, providing the opportunityto meet many people of many nationalities andfrom many different backgrounds.

Our students were also told about the manysocieties and clubs on offer and were left in nodoubt about the rewards of choosing a topuniversity.

Bright sparks reelOUT THE HOSESHaywood Fire Cadets at their passing out parade which tookplace in August. All these students gained a BTEC qualification.

Aim high and reap rewards

A GROUP of Y10 studentsvisited Birmingham for anevent where they joinedstudents from across theMidlands to learn more abouttheir university choices.

Peter Rawling gave anentertaining introduction to theseemingly daunting prospect

of selecting universities toapply to and the criteria thatneed to be considered – suchas distance from home, theopportunities available, coursecontent and reputation.

He also showed that thedecision can be guided andassisted by parents and staff,

but pointed out that in the endis up to the student to decide.

This was followed by a talkfrom the admissions tutor ofBrasenose College, Oxford, inwhich he dispelled many of themyths concerning theaccessibility of places atuniversities like Oxford and

Cambridge. These were bothshown to be viable destinationsfor our students.

Our 14 students came awaywith a greater understandingof the steps they can taketowards applying to universityand with many ideas of waysthey can begin to prepare.

HAYWOOD Academy studentsput their science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM)skills to the test in a one-daychallenge set by educationalcharity, The Smallpiece Trust.

The 60 students, aged 13and 14, were challenged todesign and construct a modelairplane, with the aim oftravelling the greatest distance.

During the project studentswere tasked withconstructing thefuselage, calculating thewing load, building thepropeller and exploringaspects of thrust, drag, lift and weight.

Students were thenjudged on the ability oftheir model plane totravel in the air, theirteamwork, marketing, and the aesthetics oftheir design andengineering.

The project wasgeared to complementthe National Curriculumwhile encouragingstudents to consideradditional study and/ora career in STEM.

Dylan Cozens, Education Officer forThe Smallpiece Trust, said: “It iswonderful to see just how muchstudents get from taking part in a STEMDay as they develop their lateralthinking and problem-solving skills. Wehope these students will now beinspired to consider engineering whenlooking to choose future study options.”

Mr Downes, from the school’s Mathsdepartment, said: “This STEM Day hasencouraged our students to link theclassroom elements of science, designand technology to what happens inengineering in the real world.

“By taking part in this STEM Day, wehave found that many of our studentshave been inspired to push themselvesharder in STEM subjects to achievetheir future goals.”

The

Haywood’s sportingACHIEVEMENTS

An emotionaland enrichingvisit to BerlinHAYWOOD students enjoyed asuccessful trip to Berlin in July. Here,Anna George of Y11 describes someof the things they saw and did:

“Going to Berlin in the summer of2014 was a remarkable experience –four full days of bringing my historylessons to life.

“We began by visiting the BerlinWall, which brought a mixture ofexcitement and sadness.

“There was something about beingable to actually touch the wall andknow that I was able to cross the linewhich 26 years ago would have beenunthinkable to do. It really made merealise how the things we learn aboutin history were tragic events andhave a great significance in theworld, even today.

The following days involved tripsto museums which loaded us withknowledge. My favourite part wasvisiting the German Parliamentbuilding – the Reichstag – whileentering the Sachsenhausenconcentration camp caused many of us to feel emotional.

“Walking the paths whichcountless numbers of victims hadcrossed and viewing the buildingsthat we knew had, just 70 years ago, contained people who were staringdeath in the face, gave a real feelingof despair. Despite these emotions, it was incredible to be a part of theknowledge-enriching experience.

“However, it was not only thehistory side of the trip that I enjoyed;the company and experience of awhole new place was brilliant.

“For me, it was definitely the mostinteresting experience that I havehad so far in my time at HaywoodAcademy.”
