    ART AND DESIGN

Why Art and Design? The opportunities for students of Art and Design, on completion of full-time education, are enormous.

Qualifications in Art and Design subjects are also accepted as entry into many other careers. Career

prospects are available in the following fields: Ceramics, Textiles & Fashion, Product Design, Teaching,

Interior Design, Theatre Design, Fine Arts, Television, Graphic Design, Advertising, Architecture, Publishing,

    Print Making, Illustration and Photography.

We aim to produce informed, independent and reflective art practitioners who can adapt their knowledge,

understanding and skills for a variety of further education courses in Art and Design. You will undertake an

intensive two year course in which you will have the opportunity to develop ideas supported by a rich

programme of tutorials, artists’ workshops, technical workshops and critical studies.

Enrichment Opportunities To further enrich and provide relevance to student learning, we arrange trips to art galleries and

universities. We also encourage students to enter their work in competitions, exhibit their work in The Mall

Galleries in London and exhibit their work online for the Saatchi Gallery. We invite art professionals in to

speak with students and provide masterclasses to help with techniques.

Students also have the opportunity to teach or support lower school students, this is a fantastic way of

sharing good practice as well as being an excellent reference for UCAS. We have outside speakers from

further education to discuss career opportunities within the creative industries.

    ECONOMICS

Why Economics? Economics provides students with a detailed understanding of how the world they live in works, from the

purpose of interest rates, the determination of prices, how different levels of competitiveness come about

and affect us, the distribution of income and wealth, why Governments set taxes, and much more.

Economics underpins our lives every single day and students get the chance to study the intricacies of this.

Fundamentally the course content is never fixed, what is taught is shaped by what is happening in the

current moment. If students go home and watch the news or read the newspaper, it is very likely

something from that will shape the next lessons they have in Economics, it is totally rooted in the real

    world.

The course provides students with an excellent complement to History, Mathematics, Finance, Banking,

Business, Human Geography and plenty of other fields of study and work.

Enrichment Opportunities The course will provide opportunities for students to enjoy talks from those in industry, including the

banking sector, as well as chances to visit places. There will also be chance for students to hear talks from

those who are working on the local economy, such as the West Midlands Economic Forum.

    MATHEMATICS

Why Mathematics? More and more subjects come to depend upon mathematical tools and there is a national shortage of

people with these skills. Mathematics will equip you with the necessary skills to cope with numerous jobs

and higher education courses. This is particularly true with scientific, technical, financial or management

careers. Mathematics is an important subject in the study of Engineering, Computing and Physics.

A good A level in mathematics will ensure you are taken seriously by universities or in job interviews. The

mathematics course allows you to build on GCSE work and also involves new ideas and powerful

techniques for solving problems. The mathematics units aim to develop your ability to solve problems and

to communicate clearly with mathematical language, as well as increasing your knowledge and enjoyment

    of this important subject.

In recent years Walsall Academy students have progressed to study mathematics at the best of British

universities including Oxford, Birmingham, Durham and Warwick.

Enrichment Opportunities Sixth Formers visit Bletchley Park and learn how the famous Enigma code was cracked. The University of

Wolverhampton links up with the Advanced Maths Support Programme to run problem solving enrichment

sessions for Year 12 and Year 13. The department regularly sends teams to participate in these events to

help them prepare for STEP and AEA papers.

    FURTHER MATHS

Why Mathematics? Students taking Further Mathematics overwhelmingly find it to be an enjoyable, rewarding, stimulating

and empowering experience. It is a challenging qualification, which both extends and deepens your

knowledge and understanding beyond the standard A level mathematics. Students who do it often say it

    is their favourite subject.

For someone who enjoys mathematics, it provides a challenge and a chance to explore new and/or more

sophisticated mathematical concepts. As well as learning new areas of pure mathematics you will study

further applications of mathematics in mechanics, statistics and decision mathematics.

If you are planning to take a degree such as Engineering, Sciences, Computing, Finance/Economics etc. or

perhaps mathematics itself, you will benefit enormously from taking Further Mathematics. Further

Mathematics introduces new topics such as matrices and complex numbers that are vital in many STEM

degrees. Students who have studied Further Mathematics find the transition to such degrees far more

    GEOGRAPHY

Why Geography? Students who study Geography possess an extremely marketable and sought after range of knowledge and

understanding of the world around them. The A level course focuses on the interrelationships between

people and their varied environments and the questions, issues and problems which arise from these

    relationships.

Geographers develop enquiry, decision making, fieldwork and research skills which will prepare them well

for Higher Education courses or a wide range of career choices. They also learn to appreciate the

significance of human values in decision making and to think critically on a range of issues. Students that

have studied geography have gone onto a range of courses at university including: Masters in Geography

and Geology; Environmental Science and Education with Geography.

Fieldwork Students will be expected to attend a compulsory residential field visit to the Lake District and a day visit

Why History? It is difficult to avoid the impact of History in our modern world. We are living with the consequences of

past events every day. A good historical education is essential to understand your world. Employers and

Universities know students of History have developed a number of skills that can be applied to any

situation. They know that you are able to gather information from a range of sources and that you

understand different points of view and can detect bias and propaganda. They also know that you are able

to communicate effectively both orally and in the written word and that you can reach a balanced

    judgement through detailed analysis.

The research, analytical and presentational skills you learn in History are precisely the skills you need to

operate in the world of work.

Enrichment opportunities Depending on Covid-19 regulations, students will have the opportunity to participate in a visit to Krakow

and Auschwitz Birkenau where they will supplement their studies about anti-Semitism and the Holocaust.

Students will also visit the University of Birmingham Library to research their chosen subject for their

coursework and acquire sources to critically evaluate. A Level historians have also visited specialised

lectures in London from prominent historians such as Simon Schama and Melvyn Bragg.

Why Psychology? The opportunities for students of Psychology, when they have completed a degree programme, are

enormous and a wide range of career choices are available.

The Psychology A level course enables students to acquire a basis for further study and employment. It

aims to encourage an experimental approach to Psychology linked to theoretical developments and to give

an understanding of the methodologies of Science. Students are expected to develop the ability to collect,

present and interpret experimental and empirical data. The course promotes an appreciation of the way

in which Psychology may be applied to solve problems.

Enrichment opportunities The Psychology department has strong links with the University of Birmingham. Students have the

opportunity to participate in postgraduate experiments applying their knowledge to real life investigations.

Students are given the chance to register and attend conferences, universities, seminars and other

activities that will enrich their understanding of the topics they are studying and improve the quality of

their essay writing. We have had a number of guest speakers come into school to talk about specific

    CORE MATHS

    CORE MATHS

Why Core Maths? Core Maths has been designed for students who have passed GCSE Mathematics at grade 5 or above, but

who have not chosen to study A level Mathematics. The qualification strengthens students’ existing skills

and focuses on applying mathematics to solve problems relevant to everyday life.

Core Maths is suitable for students intending to follow various routes into higher education, vocational

training or business and industry. For example, it could provide a grounding for students who are: entering

higher education in subjects such as geography, history or biology; choosing vocational training, including

construction, leisure & tourism and hospitality & catering; undertaking teaching qualifications; or planning

to do apprenticeships, such as in the manufacturing industry. Core Maths equips students with the

mathematical skills used in everyday life, further study and employment. It also helps students to

understand the mathematical content in other courses, through the development of quantitative-reasoning

and problem-solving skills. (Universities value mathematical skills for a large variety of degree courses and

many have A level or equivalent requirements). Mathematical and statistical problem solving, data analysis

and interpretation skills are useful for a wide range of undergraduate degrees, and a Core Maths
