System architecture The SIVA platform is a centralised and multi-lingual web application with typical 3-tier architecture. Database tier: SIVA users MySql and SqlServer products for its DBMS. The databases are used for management of agronomic and meteorological data respectively. A back- up and disaster recovery system ensures the safety and integrity of the data. Middle tier: The back-end is divided into three parts. The part that deals with the Web component is built with JAVA technology and some modules are implemented with PHP. A second part manages communication with the weather stations and the farming equipment and is essentially comprised of daemon processes that implement its logic. These latter are built on .NET technology. The third part is composed of processes that take care of elaboration and generation of climate models. Client tier: The front-end of the application is developed with Javascript and AJAX technology. The client part can be accessed through desktop PCs, handheld devices and mobile phones. CHROMA - Torino
