The 2017 Trips from your Trip Director The kick-off to the 2016-17
ski season has begun.
Our official sign-up night was
August 29th at the Manches-
ter Elks Lodge in Ballwin,
Missouri. For future club
activities, some events will
be held at this location, so
remember this location.
With pre-sign-up, plus the
sign-up night, our trips are
filling up fast.
Vail has several openings left
and is the bargain trip of the
ski season. The last time the
club stayed/skied at Vail, the
price was $1,020 (excluding
lift tickets). Fast forward 10
years, and for only $250
more, our trip price this year
is $1,270 (excluding lift tick-
ets). Vail is a great ski resort
for beginner and intermedi-
ate skiing. Also, one can hop
on a bus to ski a day at Bea-
ver Creek, Breckenridge or
Keystone. So don’t delay,
sign-up for this trip ASAP.
Jackson Hole has only six
openings left. I expect this
trip to be full soon. If you
always wanted to experience
the ambiance of the Ameri-
can West, now is the time to
sign-up. Besides skiing, there
are two National Parks with-
in an hour of Jackson. These
parks will still be opened
during the time of our visit.
This being the 100th year of
the National Park system,
you can experience the win-
ter season at the parks with-
out the summer crowds.
Sorry to say, the FSA trip to
Steamboat is now full, with a
wait list. To get on the wait
list, send in your trip applica-
tion with a $100 deposit.
If you would like more infor-
mation on our trips, feel free
to call our trip captains,
Carole (Steamboat), Dan
(Vail) or Paul (Jackson Hole).
More detailed trip infor-
mation is in this issue of the
Sitzmarker.
Remember our next meeting
is September 19th at the
Alpine Shop in Kirkwood,
Missouri. The Alpine Shop
will be introducing their lat-
est ski equipment for the
2017 ski season.

Member Spotlight: Mary Robert & David Hawley
Mary Robert and David Hawley met as colleagues around 1996 when they were both working for Monsanto, she as a temp, and he as a project team representative from the UK. They kept in touch via email after the end of the project and much later, after di-vorces and changed jobs for both, David found himself on another pro-ject in Memphis Tennessee, gave Mary a quick call and more or less showed up on her doorstep after 9 years. Surprisingly, he was admitted. She was unable to get rid of him after that, and they married in early 2015.
Mary has been a member of the St. Louis Ski Club for about ten years now. Her first club trip, with the “Charlie (Nahlik)’s Angels” group in Breckenridge that included Carole Stevenson, Denise Buehrer, and Pat-ty Bausch, was such a blast she has tried to take at least one trip a year ever since. Mary’s favorite ski desti-nation so far is Jackson Hole, with Vail a close second.
It was at Mary’s urging that David joined the ski club in about 2008. He first learned (sort of) to make his way
down the slopes at Steamboat and continues to try the green runs (and an occasional blue) on a trip every year or two. He is much more adept on the motorcycle circuit. Although retired from a racing career, he con-tinues to officiate at a high level, as Series Chief Marshal for the MotoA-merica National Superbike Champion-ship, with the occasional job at World Championship rounds. In exchange for his learning to ski, Mary agreed to take up the motorcycle and she is now the owner of a Triumph Bonne-ville.
While they may have needed some convincing to take up each other’s
hobbies, neither Mary nor David needed any cajoling when it came to their shared interest in theater. Mary has been acting since the age of eight when she played one of the Von Trapp children in The Sound of Music in her home town of Syracuse, New York. More recently, she has ap-peared in Inherit the Wind and Mac-beth at Clayton Community Theatre and in Rhinoceros at SLCC Meramec. As a playwright, David has had two full length plays produced, as well as about eight 10-minute plays. His oc-casional forays into acting include upcoming productions of Witness for the Prosecution for the Kirkwood The-ater Guild and Noises Off at SLCC Meramec. The latter will be a family affair; in his role as “Selsden” in Nois-es Off, David is joined by Mary in the role of “Dotty/Mrs. Clackett”.
Mary and David prove once again that many of our St. Louis skiers have in-teresting and varied lives beyond the slopes. For further proof, catch them in a performance of Noises Off, which will be performed on the Meramec campus October 5th – 9th.
