He was hired by the Board of Directors at a time when the Board had been updating its 3 to 5 year list of goals which had been re-written from 2004 and before. Listed are a few of the major goals at that time: Expand Community awareness by promoting historical projects and partnerships in the community. Secure adequate funding to operate with fiscal stability. Examine and update board committees and board involvement in each committee. Pursue feasibility of a separate Museum building. Locate heated, accessible, affordable storage. Consider ways to better utilize existing display space; involve persons with marketing and display experience. In hiring Medinger, the board found a person who could help carry the Society forward to preserve Sitka’s rich and exciting history. The following was submitted by Medinger at retirement: “June 30th was my last contract day as Executive Director of the Sitka Historical Society & Museum. I informed the board of my decision in February, and Chris Todd is the new Interim Executive Director until a permanent placement is determined. Chris resigned from the board after serving for three years in order to facilitate the transition. I accepted the Executive Director position six years ago as a half-time “retirement” job, with a museum budget of $73,000, a total of two part time staff, a city allocation of $36,000 and virtually no collection storage space outside of the museum. This fiscal year ending June 30th shows this year’s income at $250,000+, the equivalent of 3 full time positions on staff including a professional curator, a city allocation of $120,000, and an additional 3000 sq. ft. of collection storage and facility space including the Geodetic “White house” and three rooms at the mill site administration building. It was my pleasure and passion to have partnered/ coordinated on several mission driven and board approved projects over those six years: Rasmuson Foundation; Applied for and received Rasmuson Organizational Effectiveness Grant Totem Square & Baranof Pole Renovation St. Michaels Bell Tower renovation and the traditional ringing of the bells again 2010 International Conference on Russian-America with SNHP Rasmuson / Foraker Pre-Development Project for new Museum Planning 100-Year Anniversary ANB/ANS Panel Project and Traveling Exhibit 2012 Alaska Historical Society/Museums Alaska Conference in Sitka Publication: Russian American Conference Proceedings, “Beyond the Near Horizon” $300,000 raised via grants, fund-raising & projects over six years. I’d like to thank past & present board members, staff, volunteers and partners for the opportunity, and their facilitation in moving the Historical Society and Museum ahead with its mission. The future is bright with new staff and board members moving forward in the quest for a new and enlarged Museum for the community, students, researchers and visitors to Sitka. My plans include some family & project time, cruising/fishing Baranof Island, and time at our homestead hiking/fishing/hunting within Wrangell-St. Elias Park/Preserve. Bob Medinger Retires
