AP-S / MTT-S Joint Chapter Victoria Technical Lecture Millimeter-Waves for future wireless and mobile access. Presenters: Dr. Shabbir Ahmed (EMC Technologies) and Prof. Mike Faulkner (Victoria University) Time: 6.00pm – 7.00pm (5.30 pm refreshments) Wednesday 29 August 2018 Venue: FS 1105 (Lecture Theatre) Victoria University City Campus Level 11, 300 Flinders Street, Melbourne RSVP: Please register at Eventbrite. This is a free event and guest welcome Abstract: With the deployment of fourth generation (4G) wireless equipment almost complete, the focus of the research community has switched to the fifth generation (5G), targeted for commercialization by 2019. Increased data rates, reduced latencies, renewed focus on the internet-of-things and the scarcity of spectrum will force operators into higher frequency bands despite deteriorating performance in terms of coverage. The new mm-wave bands under consideration offer both the opportunity for wider bandwidths and the challenge of providing the coverage. The presentation will briefly introduce 5G, and then discuss some issues that apply to mm-waves. The mm-wave measurement program currently underway at Victoria University will then be described. Results from these programs have been used by Telstra for submissions to the ITU (International Telecommunications Union) and the 3GPP (Third Generation Private Partnership). Biography: Professor Michael Faulkner received a Ph.D. (1993) from the University of Technology, Sydney, Australia. He is professor in Telecommunications at Victoria University, Australia. His interests encompass all physical layer aspects of wireless systems, with an emphasis on implementation. He has
